Shah to lead BJP’s charge in 2019
NEW DELHI, SEP 8 (AGENCIES): Bharatiya Janata Party will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections under national president Amit Shah, putting off its internal elections until then. BJP on Saturday decided to defer its organisational elections to pave the way for Amit Shah to continue as President until the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. BJP president Amit Shah kick-started the twoday party national executive here on Saturday with an aggressive pep talk. Unveiling the slogan ‘Ajeya BJP’ (victorious BJP), Shah urged partymen to work for victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, where he will be leading the party, as organisational polls have been suspended till the general election is over. Shah urged partymen to work for a bigger victory than 2014, saying that while the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was working towards “making India,” the Opposition was busy supporting “breaking India” forces. Briefing the press after Shah’s speech at the closeddoor meeting, Defence Min-

Briefing about the ongoing two-day national executive meeting where a host of issues are being discussed in the backdrop of growing unhappiness in the upper castes over the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, Sitharaman quoted Shah as
saying that the BJP would return to power in 2019 with a “bigger and better margin”. Shah claimed opposition was spreading “misinformation” about the SC/ ST Act, while Sitharaman said that the BJP president did not say anything about upper caste protests over amendment to the Act. “BJP will approach the next Lok Sabha elections by taking to the people good work done by the government between 2014 and 2019 the people of the
KU leaders meet Khango Correspondent
MON, SEP 8 (NPN): Several leaders of Konyak Union (KU) had reportedly met the impeached chairman of NSCN (K) Khango Konyak recently to urge the latter to come to negotiating table for peaceful solution. Although Konyak Union was reluctant to officially confirm the report, some of the executive members, on condition of anonymity admitted that some of the leaders had met the ousted leader across the border. Without divulging much detail, KU said the leaders reportedly appealed to Khango to join the negotiating table for peaceful solution. One of the KU leaders, who recently met Khango, also said that the civil society groups of both Myanmar and India will be meeting the ousted leader
again, on a peace mission. However, he did not give any details of the proposed meeting. KU leaders were optimistic that Khango would listen to the wishes and aspirations of the people. According a TOI report, NSCN (K) in a statement said it had unanimously resolved to impeach Khango “to save the party from further breakdown and confusion.” NSCN (K) also gave Khango a safe passage to go wherever he likes without any harm, the report stated.

DCs asked to collect donations within 7 days DIMAPUR, SEP 8 (NPN): Expressing serious concern over landslides and flash floods that wreaked havoc in the state, Nagaland Governor and president of Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland branch has fervently appealed to all citizens to come forward and generously donate towards Nagaland flood relief through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). In an appeal, Acharya reminded the people that “Our State Nagaland witnessed unprecedented incessant rainfall resulting in major disaster and havoc that affected the normal life of the people of our State.” He said Landslides to sinking landmass in many areas, flooding and water logging in urban areas have claimed 12 lives and displaced over 300 families in the State owing to floods and numerous landslides besides causing destruction
to properties. Despite the state requiring Rs.800 crore for the restoration of damages caused by landslides and flash floods, Acharya lamented that the State has received only Rs.1 crore so far. “Delhi will help us but what about our share and care,” he asserted. He said that a film actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, had come all the way from Delhi to Dimapur personally and handed over an amount of Rs.1.25 crores to the chief minister (total Rs.1+1.25= Rs. 2.25). In this regard, he called upon all the students of universities, colleges and schools to participate in rebuilding of lives of the affected people by contributing minimum of Rs.10/each. He also appealed to all NGOs, hohos, NMA, NSF, businessmen, social workers, bureaucrats, religious groups, political activists, workers, kissans and all “to share and care for our flood affected brothers and sisters.” The Governor said Kiphire, Tuensang and Phek were the worst affected and

litre and Rs 3.3 per litre respectively since mid-August. Opposition parties have even threatened to observe a nationwide strike on September 10 in protest against the record-high fuel prices. Cong ress protest: Congress which had called for ‘bharat bandh on September 10, has asked the Centre to cut down excise duty on fuel, as was done by previous governments to keep prices in check each time international prices surged. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, however, remained non-committal to

reduce excise duty, arguing that oil prices are volatile and have not shown linear movement. The high petrol and diesel prices have often been blamed on taxes levied by the states and the Centre on transportation fuels. The Centre currently levies a total of Rs 19.48 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 15.33 per litre on diesel. In addition to the taxes levied by Centre, states charge Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have the lowest state
taxes on fuel at 6 per cent on both petrol and diesel. Mumbai has the highest VAT of 39.12% on petrol, while Telangana levies the highest VAT of 26% on diesel. Delhi charges a VAT of 27% on petrol and 17.24% on diesel. Prices in Delhi are the cheapest in all metros and most state capitals due to lower sales tax or VAT. Truckers to stage protests: All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) have decided to stage demonstrations across districts to protest against rising diesel and petrol prices. There has been a steep hike in diesel and petrol prices in the last seven days and ever spiralling prices is utterly disappointing, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said in a statement. Seeking the government’s immediate intervention, the body said its units have decided to stage protests across districts.

NEW DELHI, SEP 8 (NPN): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday assured a fresh batch of students of North East to Delhi of providing them safe environment with better opportunities. “Glad to interact with the youth from North East India at the NE students’ festival in New Delhi. The youth from the North East are extremely talented and they have tremendous potential. The NDA government is working towards giving them a safe environment with better opportunities,” Rajnath tweeted. Rajnath while welcoming the North East students, said that the Modi government was committed to increasing communication and linkage as well as mobility in the region. He said the Prime Minister had always emphasized on speedy de-
velopment of North East region and stressed that “India can only develop when North East develops.” Singh also assured that no Indian national would be excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Singh clarified that NRC was necessary to identify Indian citizens and weed out illegal immigrants. Addressing an event organised by ‘My Home India’, an NGO founded by BJP leader Sunil Deodhar, Singh said: “It is absolutely necessary to know who are Indians and who are foreigners.” The update of NRC, the massive Supreme Courtmonitored exercise to identify genuine Indian nationals living in Assam excluded over 40 lakh people from the draft list published on July 30, creating a huge political controversy. The exercise aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state that
borders Bangladesh was carried out in Assam following a decision in 2005 after a series of meetings between the central and state governments and the influential All Assam Students’ Union. Assam, which faced influx of people from Bangladesh since the early 20th century, is the only state having an NRC, first prepared in 1951. The current exercise, started in 2005 under the then Congress regime got a major push only after the BJP came to power in the state with illegal immigration from Bangladesh as a poll plank. When the NRC was first prepared in Assam way back in 1951, the state had 80 lakh citizens then. As per 2011 census, Assam’s total population is over 3.11 crore. The process of identification of illegal immigrants in Assam has been widely debated and become a contentious issue in the state’s politics. K Y M C
