CEC rebukes KCR’s early Telangana election strategy NEW DELHI, SEP 7 (AGENCIES): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) O.P. Rawat on Friday condemned the remarks by caretaker Telangana chief minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao about the scheduling of fresh polls in the State. Rawat said that an EC team will be visiting the State on September 11 to assess the ground situation. Rao said that the Telangana assembly would be dissolved eight months before schedule to clear the way for early polls. On Thursday, Rao had said: “The election notification is expected in the first week of October, polls in November and results in December”. The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee had objected to it. Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat was quoted in a report by NDTV saying, “KCR’s comments on elections are preposterous and uncalled for. We are mandated by the Supreme Court to conduct elections at the earliest possible and there should be no delay. We shouldn’t allow a caretaker government to take the opportunity of delaying elections.”

roads and rebuilding damages caused by landslides and flash flood during this monsoon season. During a review meeting at Hotel Vivor here , Singh remarked that the reports submitted by the DCs would have to be updated by including more details in them. He advised the DCs to provide details as annexure and stressed that the team would require updated reports from the affected districts. While thanking the State government and National State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) for carrying out rescue and relief operations, Singh urged them to take all stakeholders on board to tackle the current situation. In his brief remark, NSDMA adviser Pukhayi acknowledged IMCT for visiting the State during one of its “darkest moments”. Pukhayi informed the team that the memorandum summary did not mention about food grains and hence asked that it be mentioned, while urging the members to properly convey the plight of Nagaland to the Central government. He said the State gov-

ernment had submitted a requirement of about Rs 650 crore in 2017 under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), but regretted that the Central government had allotted only Rs 65 crore that was not enough for restoration work and assist the affected people. Pointing out how Assam received almost Rs 2,000 crore whenever there were floods, while Nagaland received less than Rs 100 core, the NSDMA adviser appealed to the IMCT members to consider allocation of a more reasonable amount for Nagaland. In his speech, chief secretary RB Thong thanked IMCT for visiting the State with an aim to provide relief and regretted that the team could not be taken to interior areas due to inclement weather and lack of road connectivity. Stating that Naga people had high hopes on the team, he asked district disaster management authorities and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority to furnish detailed report at the earliest possible time so that funds could be released early to the State government.

AMSU volunteers today protested and burned effigies of Union home

While burning the effigies, the volunteers shouted various slogans against NSCN(I-M) including “Go back NSCN(I-M)”. Presence of Dengue egg alarmingly high in Dmu DIMAPUR, SEP 7 (NPN): A recent entomological survey and inspections carried out in various localities in Dimapur found out that the percentage of House Index which indicates the presence of dengue eggs and larvae was alarmingly high. According to Dimapur District Vector-Borne Officer (DVBO) Dr. Imtiwabong Aier, the high rate of House index suggested that there was a high risk of transmission and increased cases of dengue. Dr. Aier disclosed this at an inter-sectoral meeting on dengue held at DC’s office Dimapur on September 4. The meeting was part of the campaign to fight against dengue and other vector-borne diseases. DVBO said the primary focus in fighting dengue was source reduction since fogging kills only the adult mosquitoes and not the eggs and larvae.

Community participation, he said was the need of the hour to reduce the breeding sites and prevent the increase of dengue cases in Dimapur district. Dr. Aier appreciated the support of Rotary Clubs for assisting in fogging and dissemination the message on dengue and malaria in the past two years. He also appreciated DMC for spraying Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in the past. Also, speaking at the meeting, NVBDCP state programme officer, Dr. Talitemsu, said that there were mainly three vectors found in Nagaland namely Dengue, Malaria, and Japanese Encephalitis (JE). She said that the cases of malaria have considerably gone down over the years. However, Dr. Talitemsu said the cases of dengue have increased. Highlighting the scenario of vector-borne dis-

eases in Nagaland and Dimapur district in particular, he expressed hope that such a meeting would bring about good resolutions to prevent vector-borne diseases in the district. At the meeting, ADC Dimapur, Albert Ezung, pointed out that dengue cases have increased in Dimapur, but there had been no death reported so far. He said health department in the district has been carrying out various activities to curb the menace, but there was a lot of work to be done. Recent flooding of the urban areas due to waterlogging and drainage clogging affected the people, ADC said, adding that there were concerns of a high chance of disease outbreak. “We need collaborative efforts to combat dengue,” Ezung said and stressed on community participation to achieve desirable results.

Further, the ADC emphasised the need for identifying responsible people from every community, train them and give them the responsibility and accountability to educate their respective communities on dengue and other vectorborne diseases. He also suggested sensitising them on the preventive and curative aspects of the disease. He said collaborative efforts of the government and the public and various NGOs can curb the menace. The programme was chaired by DVBO Dr. Imtiwabong Aier, and vote of thanks was proposed by CMO Dimapur Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi. The meeting was attended by deputy director Neisakho, UVBDS assistant director, Kikolul Khieya, and representatives from Rotary Club, DMC, Dimapur Christian Forum, staffs under SPO and CMO offices and Dobashis.

petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 79.99 - a record high. It costs Rs 87.39 in Mumbai. Diesel is now priced at Rs 72.07 a litre in Delhi and Rs 76.51 per litre in Mumbai. As commuters blame Narendra Modi government for being ineffective in keeping the process of fuel in control, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan claimed that the surge in fuel prices is owing to the rise in global crude oil prices and falling value of Indian currency against the dollar. Daily use items to become expensive: If the hike in fuel prices has weighed on your wallet, then you should brace for another bad news. Consumers in India will soon have to shell out more on daily use products. The prices of FMCG products are likely to increase by about 5-8 per cent starting next month. According to a report

in The Economic Times, some companies have already increased prices in line with various inflationary pressures such as spike in petrol and diesel prices.
