Mongmong celebrated in Kiphire

KIPHIRE, SEP 1 (NPN): Kiphire Alongshung Atparu Mulong (KAAM) celebrated Mongmong, the premier festival of the Sangtam community, at Deluxe Point Kiphire town on September 1 with hundreds of Sangtams of Kiphire Town attending their biggest festival. Speaking about the
significance of Mongmong, T. Yanglizi Sangtam of Kiphire Village Union Kiphire Town said that “Mongmong” is one of the biggest festival of the Sangtams celebrated from September 1 to 6 every year. It is a celebration of prayer for a bountiful harvest. He also narrated the significance of each of the six days. Yanglizi told the people gathered
that It was a festival of togetherness and a time of forgiveness. He said that in the olden days, Mongmong festival was celebrated with wine and local brew, however with the advent of Christianity It is celebrated with thanks giving to God, he added. He further urged the gathering to preserve culture as it is the identity of a person.

It may be mentioned that Mongmong festival, which is the biggest festival of the Sangtams, is celebrated from September 1 to 6 every year. Each of the six days has has its own significance. The primary day of the festival is September 3, however different villages and unions celebrate it according to the day they find most convenient. Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, Mohammed Ali Shihab greeted the Sangtams on the occasion and extended wishes for the auspicious occasion to bring abundant joy and happiness to all.

DIMAPUR: The Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN) Elections was successfully held on August 29. A press release from ZCN Election Commission convenor, Kiezin Zeliang stated that Dr. Tumda Newme was voted to the post of president with 205 votes. D. Atong and Ndabe Diswang were nominated for the
two posts of vice president and declared unopposed winners for “Southern and Northern respectively.” Both the outgoing president Raitu Elu and also Dr. Tumda Newme spoke during the formal program. Altogether 95 villages/town participated in the election and cast their votes.
DIMAPUR: The NPGN/NNC (Non-Accord) has discharged C. Yinten Chang, son of Chaolin Chang, tatar Yemrup village Tuensang from active national service from September 1. The NPGN/NNC (Non-Accord) in a press release by kilo kilonser MIP stated that the discharge was due to family domestic problems. It conveyed its best wishes for his future endeavours. The release also said that kilonser, Bemlong Chang has been appointed as the chairman of Chang region, Tuensang for a few months. 3 arrested for drug possession

NPP observes First Foundation Day in Nagaland
DIMAPUR: Nagaland State National People’s Party (NPP) celebrated its first foundation day on September 1 at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur. NPP State Unit IPR secretary, Ricky Ozukum in a press release said that state general secretary & PDA member, Sasank Ghatraj, who welcomed all the participants, mentioned that the NPP Foundation Day was being celebrated in many districts in Nagaland and also in other parts of India. He also mentioned that September 1 was not only the foundation day but also the birth anniversary of party founder, Padma Vibhushan late Purno Agitok Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker. A framed picture of the party founder was unveiled together by guest speaker S.B Sangma, state working president, Meghalaya and Ato Yepthomi, state party president & NHL chairman. After this, a biography of late P.A Sangma, was shared by the guest speaker. AtoYepthomi, in his presidential speech said that it was an auspicious day because it was the first foundation day for the party in Nagaland and that this day would go down in the history of the NPP party. He remarked that the party founder was a statesman from the North East who was well known and respected all over India.
He asserted that a political party with dedicated members and workers is like a house with a strong foundation and mentioned that the NPP family is a small political party but it comprised of dedicated workers and members. Yepthomi stated that the NPP was growing fast in a short span of time and that it was the only tribal party to be recognised in India. Immanuel College PTA meeting DIMAPUR: The 6th Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting of Immanuel College Dimapur for higher secondary students (2018-2019) was held on August 31 at the college conference hall. Democratic rights and freedoms seminar
DIMAPUR: A Consultative Meet & Seminar on ‘People’s Commission on Shrinking Democratic Space’ (PCSDS) for Nagaland State was conducted by Peace Channel and North East Institute of Social Science and Research, at NEISSR Conference Hall on August 28. The objective of the seminar was to respond to and advocate the issues of freedoms of opinion, expressions, association, assembly, dissent, protest and all other rights, including harassment and criminalization of all Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). Speaking on the occasion as resource person, HRD from Assam, Bondita Acharya, stated that human rights defenders were individ-
uals, groups and associations committed to defending and upholding human rights and freedoms. She highlighted the human rights violation scenario in India and asserted that people needed to raise their voices against arbitrary arrests and detentions, extrajudicial killings, prisoner rights, militarization, etc. Assistant Professor of Kohima Law College, T. Limanochet Jamir, who is also a member of National Working Committee of PCSDS, said that people don’t have to be in a position of power to bring change, they only need will-power and determination, and most of all God’s favour. Jamir also dwelt on the life of Jesus Christ who he said he regarded as a human
rights defender. Principal of City Law College, P Leonard Aier, in his concluding remarks, stated that the State which was supposed to safeguard the rights of the citizens was the biggest violator of human rights. He said that the State regulates law and at the same time misuses law through coercion.
