Markets cheered the announcement with the BSE Sensex jumping by the most in a decade while the rupee also climbed against the US dollar. firms, incorporated after October 1, 2019 and starting operations before March 31, 2023, to 15 per cent from current 25 per cent. This will be subject to the condition that these companies will not avail any other incentive or concession such as tax holiday enjoyed by units in Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and accelerated depreciation. The effective tax rate for existing units, after considering surcharges and cess such as Swachh Bharat cess and education cess - which are levied on top of the income and corporate tax rates, will be 25.17 per cent as compared to 34.94 per cent now. For new units, it will be 17.01 per cent as against 29.12 per cent now. The new tax structure, which will lead to government losing Rs 1.45 lakh crore in revenue annually, is effective from April 1, 2019, and will bring Indian corporate tax rate at par with Asian peers in a bid to attract investments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the move as “historic” and said the announcements made in the last few weeks show that his government is leaving

no stone unturned to make India a better place to do business. “It will give a great stimulus to #MakeInIndia, attract private investment from across the globe, improve competitiveness of our private sector, create more jobs and result in a win-win for 130 crore Indians,” he tweeted. The reduction in corporate tax, which India Inc hailed as the one which will revive growth and investment, is the single biggest cut in tax rates since India opened up its economy in 1991. India had the highest effective corporate tax rate of 38.05 per cent in 1997.

Properly assess number of pharmacies: CNTC DIMAPUR, SEP 20 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has asked the department of health and family welfare (H&FW) to properly assess the number of pharmacies in each district and bring out a list under whose license and names were they being run especially in the commercial hub of Dimapur. CNTC through its media cell claimed that many pharmacies in Dimapur were being run by persons without any specific knowledge on medicine or possessing the required qualification. CNTC has asked the department to put a ban on such practice immediately as it was a very serious issue pertaining to the life and death of each citizen of the state. The council lamented that many drug licenses under Naga names were found to be leased out to nonNagas on rental basis while

depriving many local youths with genuine qualifications of unemployment. Demanding to know how many drug licenses for wholesaler and retailer have been issued till date, CNTC has also asked the health department to come out with an accurate data of total number of pharmacies in the state. Acknowledging the department working out on the issue, the CNTC expressed hope they would bring out the real picture in black and white. CNTC warned that it would further look into the matter through legal means if it was not satisfied in the report. It has also appealed to every GB, chairman and colony council both in rural and urban areas to keep a strict vigil on the mushrooming of pharmacies in their respective villages and localities and not to issue any no objection certificates (NOC).

Also, super-rich tax by way of enhanced surcharge on income, announced in the July 5 Budget, will not apply to capital gains arising on equity sale or equity-oriented funds liable to securities transaction tax (STT) with a view to stabilise flow of funds into capital markets. Investors become richer by nearly Rs 7 lakh cr in a day: Investor wealth on Friday zoomed a whopping Rs 6.82 lakh crore in single day as equity markets rallied, with the Sensex skyrocketing 2,284 points in intra-day trade, following a slew of economy-boosting measures announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Nyekha disclosed that PAC was planning further moves on the issue but did not specify what these would be or when they would be launched. Briefing media persons at the fifth day of “Operation Check Gate”, at Naga Council Office (NCD), Nyekha said PAC volunteers had stopped nine unauthorized welfare societies and unions from collecting money at check gates. The nine unauthorized unions were collecting money at Rs. 100 to 150 per truck. Nyekha said after preventing such collections, a truck was saved from paying Rs. 1300 to Rs.1500 each while entering Dimapur. Twitter closes fake accounts worldwide WASHINGTON, SEP 20 (AFP): Twitter said Friday it shut down thousands of accounts worldwide for spreading misinformation, including some artificially amplifying pro-Saudi messaging as part of a regional propaganda war. The move affected proSaudi accounts coming from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates directed at Qatar and Yemen, Twitter said, as well as others from China seeking to sow discord among protesters in Hong Kong. Additional fake accounts were suspended in Spain and Ecuador, Twitter’s safety team said. The move is the latest in a series of actions by social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter cracking down on manipulation, often by statecontrolled entities disguising their identities.

Major crisis brewing in Gulf NEW DELHI, SEP 20 (IANS): A major crisis is brewing in the Gulf in the wake of the drone attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia by Yemens rebel Houthi group, which has reportedly threatened to carry out further strikes in the Kingdom as well as in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A worried UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of “devastating” consequences for the region and the world if the crisis escalates. A UN team of experts has been dispatched to Saudi Arabia to investigate the weekend attack on two oil facilities of Aramco amid assertions by the US and Saudi Arabia that Iran was behind the hit. With the tensions between the US and Iran already on the rise, the latest development has triggered fears of a major conflagra-

tion. US President Donald Trump, while attacking Iran, said he has a “lot of options” to deal with the Persian nation. “I’m not looking to get into new conflict, but sometimes you have to,” he said. He has ordered sanctions against Iran to be increased “substantially” in the aftermath of the attack on a Saudi oil field and the world’s largest crude oil processing plant in which crude oil production to the tune of 5.7 million barrels per day were knocked out. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo termed the attack as an “act of war” and said Saudi Arabia has the “right to defend itself ”. This attack has a major impact on India which sources a large chunk of oil from Saudi Arabia. The Houthi group, meanwhile, reportedly warned of further strikes on oil installations in

Saudi Arabia as well as in UAE, saying it has drones capable of penetrating deep inside these countries. The militia, supported by Iran, is angry against Saudi Arabia and UAE for their military indulgence in Yemen. Iran, while denying any role in the attack, has warned that it would retaliate immediately if it is targeted. “We don’t want conflict in the region,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said and, while attacking the US, asked, “who started the conflict?” Amidst rising tensions, Saudi Arabia and UAE have joined US-led coalition to ensure security of global energy and its flow through the maritime zone in the Middle East. The US State Department has also issued an advisory, asking its citizens to “exercise increased caution” while travelling to Saudi Arabia. K Y M C
