apprehensions about disquiet in the wake of the release of the NRC list, Assam was calm with no incident of violence or protests reported from anywhere. EC’s mega EVP launch today NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): Election Commission’s (EC) new mega Electors Verification Programme (EVP), which seeks to update electoral rolls through crowd sourcing, is set to be launched on September 1 across the country, officials said on Saturday. Under the programme, a voter from each family will get a username and password, allowing a person to upload all documents related to electoral registration and tag similar details about his or her family members, Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh said at a press conference here. “These details will then be verified by block level officers (BLOs) and therefore, it will save a lot of time. The idea is also to empower voters to assess electoral roll details, self-authenticate and then get mistakes rectified, if any,” he said. The ‘mega million’ exercise will be done by 36 CEOs

at the state headquarters level, by 740 district electoral officers at the district level and by BLOs and electoral registration officers in around one million polling stations, the EC said. EC said, the summary revision draft will be published after that, with cut-off date being January 1, 2020, and the final roll will be published by the first or second week of January. In addition to the already approved seven documents three more documents will be used for authentication of electors’ details--PAN card, smart card issued by RGI under NPR; and latest water/telephone/electricity/ gas connection bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or that of his/her immediate relation like parents etc. The citizens will also be allowed to submit verified documents from Digilocker for which provision has been made on prescribed digital platforms, EC added.

forces besides personnel of the state police patrolling the streets in towns and villages. Surprisingly enough, parties across the political divide called the final NRC faulty, with some saying they would appeal against it in the Supreme Court. Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma deplored that many people who came to India as refugees before 1971 were not included in the final citizenship roll. He demanded that the Supreme Court allow reverification of at least 20 per cent of samples included in the list in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10 per cent in the rest of Assam. Three-time chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi of the Congress said the Centre had failed in its duty to come up with a flawless NRC and that the people of Assam were feeling “helpless”. When the complete draft was released on July 30 last year, over 40 lakh people were excluded from the list. An additional 1,02,462 people were left out in June this year, taking the total number of those excluded to 41,10,169.
