CNTC reaffirms dissociation from Naga Hoho DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) during its meeting with all its constituents units – Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho and Sumi Hoho – at Hotel Saramati on Saturday reaffirmed its earlier resolution to disassociate from Naga Hoho till its constitution was thoroughly restructured and one that was acceptable to all through a general consensus. According to a statement issued by its media cell, CNTC also resolved to ask the State government to expedite amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 taking into account views and suggestions of tribes’ hohos and civil societies. While reiterating that it was still opposed to any type of reservation policy in local body elections, the council, however, clarified that it supported women nominees chosen from various backgrounds like national and State awardees, experts and luminaries from different backgrounds by a committee. CNTC also expressed its firm opposition to any kind of taxes on land and buildings as, according to the council, directly infringed on the provisions under Article 371A.

mapur station, which was followed by a press conference. Speaking to media persons, Paiwang explained that the buses would issue manual slip tickets to passengers inside the bus itself. He said the pink buses were introduced to make it easier for women to travel and keeping in mind Naga society’s tradition of respecting women. On introducing women conductors and drivers for the pink buses, he said he was considering putting up a proposal for creation of posts
in this regard, if women were willing to take up the job. While the four pink buses are brand new, the five city buses came from 14 condemned Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) buses that were lying unused with the urban department. The transport department took these from the urban department and its engineers then refurbished five of them for use. The remaining nine buses will also be repaired and kept as backup for use in districts where required. (Cont’d on p-12)

MHA advisory to NE states DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): In view of reports about NGOs and student bodies carrying out checking on people from Assam to prove their identity post NRC, the Ministry of Home Affairs has said that such unauthorized checking was illegal and cannot be permitted. shortfall was higher by almost 60% but after the enactment of the Nagaland Pig Breeding Policy 2016, the production in the State has increased and we are short by about 40% of the requirement. He said that under the new policy the Department has been working hard to make Nagaland a self-sufficient state in meat products by initiating various measures including training the local pig farmers, setting up of breeding centre in Medziphema and Satellite Centre for Artificial Insemination in all the districts. Self-sufficiency in meat products would enhance the economy of the State and also help in checking the quality of meat, rather than importing it from beyond the state, he said. However, he expressed surprise on the report that Department of Underdeveloped Areas is initiating to import around 8000 pigs per month from Punjab. He lamented that DUDA is initiating the move without even consulting the AH&VS Department, which only has the
authority to initiate import of meat products into the State. Such move is against the Pig Breeding Policy of the State, he said, while also expressing regret that DUDA had failed to obtain ‘No Objection Certificate’ which has to be issued in consultation with the technical expertise of the AH&VS Department. Nonetheless, highly placed sources on conditions of anonymity revealed that Department of Underdeveloped Areas has taken the No Objection from the Advisor of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, R Khing without consulting the department concern. Efforts to reach the Advisor Khing to confirm the issue was unsuccessful while his personal secretary failed to respond. On this, Dr Walling said that other than the Administrative Head of Department and the Head of Department in consultation with technical expertise of the AH&VS no one can issue the No Objection Certificate. APO public rally in Kohima on Sep 19
KOHIMA, SEP 17 (PTI): The move to import live pigs worth Rs 200 crore annually to Nagaland from Punjab by the Department of Underdeveloped Areas (DUDA) has not been welltaken by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and the Pig Farmers Association of Nagaland. A delegation of DUDA Nagaland led by its Advisor N Bongkhao Konyak and Principal Secretary L Kire had recently visited Punjab and held meeting with Punjab government for likely import of around 8000 pigs per month to Nagaland. The news report emanating from Chandigarh was published recently in the local dailies. Being one of the highest meat consuming states, Nagaland is currently facing shortfall of 40% of meat products out of total requirement of about Rs 400 crore annually, said Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Dr. Aomangyang Walling while interacting with a section of media here on Monday. DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): After some articles that appeared in this newspaper, which questioned the very medical efficacy of vaccinations besides taking away the right to decide by making them mandatory, imputing potential side effects and maintaining that vaccinations are not needed since human bodies form their own immunity; the state government has come out advocating for the necessity and efficacy of vaccinations. (See page 6) Nagaland Post contacted two well known paediatricians of two well known private hospitals to obtain their professional views. In separate talks, the paediatricians told this newspaper that they have not come across any children who became autistic after taking vaccinations especially MMR. One of the chief arguments against mandatory vaccinations has been the claim that they cause autism among chil-
dren. This controversy began in 1998 when British researchers published a paper claiming that measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine caused autism (a disorder characterised by troubles with social interaction and communication, repetitive behaviour, speech and non verbal communication). Though the study involved cases of 12 children in all, yet it received a lot of publicity. The uproar against ‘mandatory vaccinations’ rose to a crescendo as more children were diagnosed with the condition. More doctors then took up independent research on the link between MMR vaccine and autism. However, none of these studies found any evidence that MMR vaccine caused autism. Moreover, an investigation into the 1998 study uncovered a number of problems with how it was conducted. According to media reports, the journal that published the 1998 report eventually retracted it. That meant the publication no longer stood
by the results. In 1999, after the British study, fears about a possible vaccine-autism link shifted from MMR to a substance used in some children’s vaccines. It was called ‘thimerosal’, and it contained mercury. That’s a metal that’s harmful to the brain and kidneys at high levels. Doctors used thimerosal to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in vaccines. Reports suggested lack of evidence that the small amount used in the medicines caused harm. Still, it was taken out of most children’s vaccines by 2001 at the urging of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Public Health Service. To see if ‘thimerosal’ was linked to autism, researchers studied children who received vaccines that contained it. They compared them to kids who received vaccines that didn’t. The CDC conducted or paid for nine different studies looking at ‘thimerosal’ and autism. It found no link. What’s more, autism diagnoses continued to
adviser to Nagaland government (marketing) and a consultant to Punjab, which expressed “keen interest” in importing live pigs from Punjab as people of Nagaland apparently considered pork of the northern State nutritious, hygienic and healthy, compared to pork in other parts of the country. They pointed out to Nagaland Post report that as a consequence of the visit, Punjab would start supplying 8,000 pigs to Nagaland every month and help its pig farmers earn Rs 200 crore annually, or approximately 267 pigs daily at a cost of Rs 55 lakh. While appreciating the initiative, CPO questioned the State government what prompted it to decide importing pigs, when the same DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): could be produced locally. DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): Expressing its opposition to the State government’s move to import live pigs from Punjab, Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) has asked the government to constitute a highlevel committee to study the impact of livestock imports on local economy, besides examining constitution of an amalgamated society for improvement of livestock rearing and marketing in a time-bound mission mode programme. In a press communiqué, CPO president Kekhwengulo Lea and general secretary Mutsivoyi Kotso drew the State government’s attention to deputing a high-level delegation headed by department of underdeveloped areas (DUDA) adviser and comprising DUDA principal secretary, joint director,
Raging debate over safety of MMR vaccines rise after vaccine makers took ‘thimerosal’ out of almost all childhood vaccines. Researchers have also looked to see if all the vaccines required before age 2 somehow together triggered autism. Children receive 25 shots in the first 15 months of life. Some people feared that getting all those shots so early in life could lead to the development of autism. In 2004, the Immunization Safety Review Committee of the Institute of Medicine published a report on the topic. The group looked at all the studies on vaccines and autism, both published and unpublished. It released a 200-page report stating there was no evidence to support a link between vaccines and autism. The debate over safety of MMR vaccines including other new additions, will have to be addressed by the Nagaland Medical Council as well as both government and private medical practitioners in order to set the matter to rest.
