IMF on India’s economic growth WASHINGTON, SEP 13 (PTI): India’s economic growth is “much weaker” than expected, according to the IMF, which attributed it to the corporate and environmental regulatory uncertainty and lingering weaknesses in some nonbank financial companies. India’s GDP growth rate slipped to 5 per cent in the first quarter of 2019-20, the lowest in over six years, according to latest official data. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in July projected a slower growth rate for India in 2019 and 2020, a downward revision of 0.3 per cent for both the years, saying its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will now grow respectively at the rate of 7 per cent and 7.2 per cent, reflecting a weaker-than expected outlook for domestic demand. However, India will still be the fastest growing major economy of the world and much ahead of China, the Washingtonbased global financial institution had said. “We will have a fresh set of numbers coming up
ACAUT, PSAN back NNQF demand DIMAPUR, SEP 13 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland and PSAN have extended support to Nagaland NET Qualified Forum (NNQF)’s demand for advertisement of 110 assistant professors and librarians posts in the higher education department. In a joint press release, ACAUT chairman Tia Longchar and PSAN convenor Mughaka have questioned why was NPSC delaying the advertising of the 63 posts in spite of requisition by the higher education department? They also queried for what purpose the higher education department withheld five posts out of the 68 posts sent to NPSC for requisition? Further, ACAUT and PSAN asked why NPSC has not yet declared the results of 86 post of Common Education Service Exam held on March 9? Seeking immediate answers from the higher education department and NPSC, the two organisations maintained that the patience of the stakeholders, who were for meritocracy, transparency and justice, should not be tested as they still believed in the rule of law. If any unfair practices or unjustified delays were made, ACAUT and PSAN cautioned that they would use all democratic means of expressing resentment.

but the recent economic growth in India is much weaker than expected, mainly due to corporate and environmental regulatory uncertainty and lingering weakness in some non-bank financial companies,” IMF spokesman Gerry Rice told reporters at a news conference here on Thursday. The risks to the outlook are tilted to the downside, he said. Responding to a question on the recent GDP figures of India, Rice said the IMF will monitor the economic situation in the country. Sharp deceleration in manufacturing output and subdued farm sector activity pulled down India’s GDP growth to over six-year low
of 5 per cent in the AprilJune quarter of 2019-20, according to official data released last month. The previous low in GDP growth was recorded at 4.3 per cent in JanuaryMarch quarter of 2012-13. India’s economic growth stood at 8 per cent in the same quarter of 2018-19. “The GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in Q1 of 2019-20 is estimated at Rs 35.85 lakh crore, as against Rs 34.14 lakh crore in Q1 of 2018-19, showing a growth rate of 5 per cent,” the National Statistical Office (NSO) said in a statement. “We will update that assessment in the upcoming world economic outlook,” IMF spokesman said.
India’s exports dropped by 6.05 per cent to USD 26.13 billion in August mainly on account of significant dip in shipments from key sectors such as petroleum, engineering, leather, and gems & jewellery. Imports too declined by 13.45 per cent to USD 39.58 billion, narrowing trade deficit to USD 13.45 billion in August, according to the government data released on Friday. Out of 30 key sectors, as many as 22 showed negative growth in August. Shipments of gems and jewellery, engineering goods, and petroleum products contracted by 3.5 per cent, 9.35 per cent and 10.73 per cent, respectively. of power system. Advisor power appreciated the role of NERPC in co-ordinating activities like system planning, system operation, scheduling and drawal of Power, generation schedule, resolving commercial issues etc. He, however, opined that NERPC should stretch its hand a little bit more to be truly a spokesman for resolving these issues. At the meeting, Tovihoto had particularly raised two very important issues confronting Nagaland and all other North Eastern States. The first issue was regarding the deviation settlement mechanism (DSM) regulation wherein the 4th Amendment regime was made effective from January 2019 resulting in huge financial burden in the form of DSM payables affecting the financial health of small
states like Nagaland. After raising the matter earlier, he said the central electricity regulatory commission (CERC) had realised problems and to some extent the matter has now been partially relaxed through the latest 5th Amendment. However, he said it was not sufficient as the 5th Amendment was made effective only from June 3, 2019 thus the financial burden from January 2019 to June 2019 still remained unresolved. The second issue raised was regarding the need to set up a reliable and robust communication and telemetry system in the North Eastern Region for facilitating optimum scheduling and dispatch of electricity within the state, monitor grid operations, keep accounts of the quantity of electricity transmitted through the state grid, exercise supervision and control over intra-state transmission system and carry out real time operations of grid in accordance with grid standards and the state grid code. Both the issues raised were well accepted by all the North Eastern States and unanimous decision was taken by NERPC to raise the matter immediately with Ministry of Power, and CERC.

fulfilled. JAF said that the PAC recommended enhancement of pay of specific categories of employees’ w.e.f June 1, 2017. However, even after lapse of nine months from the date of submission of the report, the forum said the government has not implemented the recommendations for no valid reason. It stated that the government normally constitute a full pay commission to look into the grievances and complaints of anomalies from individuals/departments /associations in the ROPs before adopting a new ROP. However, the joint forum said the government has failed to constitute such ROP committee. Alternatively, it said PAC was constituted, which recommended higher pay level for some categories of employees under various associations.

KOHIMA, SEP 13 (NPN): Ongoing Sanuorü bridge construction on the road leading to Nagaland civil secretariat is being hampered by the continuous flow of garbage through Sanuorü stream during rainy days. The flow of garbage was adding additional burden on the contractors and labourers, who keep removing
the garbage to prevent the stream from clogging. However, on Thursday, the stream got blocked because of the garbage and the workers had to remove debris leaving aside their normal construction work. Speaking to Nagaland Post at the construction site, EE PWD (R&B) south division, Er. Vizotuo Seletsu, appealed to the public to stop throwing garbage into
the stream so the workers could concentrate on their work. He said that in spite of all the constraints, the contractors, engineers and labourers were all out to ensure that the work did not get hampered. However, he said the continuous flow of garbage was quite burdensome since the labourers had to be engaged in removing garbage day and night. He said the third foun-
dation was about to begin, but were hesitant because of the inclement weather. Nevertheless, he said by September 16 they could be able to start the work. Seletsu said though the cost of the bridge was Rs. 20 crore, the state government could give only Rs. 60 lakh as first sanction. Despite that the contractors were giving their best to bring out the bridge to shape. He expressed regret that in spite of the relentless effort, the severe criticism and complaints were not very pleasant. However, he said on completion, Nagaland would have the first four-lane arch bridge very soon. In this regard, he said all the people involved in the construction must be encouraged. Meanwhile, the engineer has sought cooperation from all responsible citizens so the bridge was completed on time.
