KOHIMA, OCT 2 (NPN): Nagaland on Tuesday became the 22nd State in the country and fourth in the Northeast to be declared Open Defecation Free State (Rural) on the occasion of 149th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. PHE minister Jacob Zhimomi announced this in the presence of PHE department officials, village councils and water and sanitation (WATSAN) committee members at an event held at Ura Academy Hall here. On the occasion the minister also gave away awards to 112 villages for best sanitation practices. and does not cover urban areas. While Longleng, Kiphire, Dimapur and Mokokchung districts were declared ODF in 2017, the remaining districts of Kohima, Mon, Peren, Zunheboto, Wokha, Phek and Tuensang were declared ODF on Tuesday, thereby making Nagaland ODF State (Rural). On the occasion, the best performing villages were also awarded with mementos and citations. Zhimomi further announced that as the country stepped into the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, PHED would col-

laborate with urban development department so that Nagaland was declared as ODF by 2019 along with rest of the country. He expressed sorrow over the recent damage caused to road infrastructure and private properties by heavy rains, adding efforts were on to restore them. The minister further asserted that development was not just about having good buildings and roads, but also about having basic amenities with a clean environment. Claiming that the State government had helped in

getting Nagaland declared as ODF State (Rural), he remarked that now it was now up to the citizens to retain the status, even as he appealed to village councils and WATSAN committee members to ensure that ODF status was retained. Zhimomi mentioned that as per an independent council report, Nagaland ranked 15th in the country in sanitation maintenance in rural areas and called for working towards the common endeavour of ensuring that Nagaland was included in top 10 for sanitation. Modi stresses on 4Ps for cleaner world

NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that Swachh Bharat Mission has turned into the world’s biggest mass movement on sanitation and has given a mantra for making the world cleaner. “Political leadership, public funding, partnerships and people’s participation are the four mantras for making the world cleaner,” he said in his address at the closing session of the four-day Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention (MGSIC) in the presence of sanitation ministers and other leaders in WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) from around the world, besides UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres. Referring to Gandhiji’s remarks that he would give greater priority to cleanliness over independence, Modi said that he derived inspiration from the Mahatma and followed his guidelines while initiating the movement. “Today, I am proud that our nation of 125 crore people is following in the footsteps of Gandhiji, and have turned Swacch Bharat Mission as the world’s big-

gest mass movement,” he said. Asser ting that the Swachh Bharat Mission has brought a behavioural change in the people, he said that rural sanitation has gone up to 94 per cent as against 38 per cent in 2014. “Five lakh villages and 25 states have become Open Defecation Free,” he said expressing satisfaction at the changing lifestyle of people in India, following Swachh Bharat Mission. Mentioning the emphasis that Mahatma Gandhi placed on cleanliness, he said that an unclean environment, if not cleaned, leads to a situation where one starts accepting circumstances. “On the contrary, if one cleans up dirt in the surroundings, he gets energized and then does not resign himself to existing adverse circumstances,” he said. Referring to 17 Sustainable Development Goals set up by United Nations, the Prime Minister assured UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that India will play an important role in achieving the goals. “We are on track to achieve it before the set target. Along with sanita-

tion our government is also focussing on nutrition,” he said. Addressing the gathering, Guterres congratulated Modi for giving priority to sanitation and said that clean India will be a befitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. “Mahatma Gandhi was ahead of his time when it came to safe, hygienic sanitation - as he was in so many areas. He demanded the right of sanitation for everyone. And he demanded respect for that right from everyone. And the Clean India Mission builds on his genius and lifelong quest for human dignity,” he said. The UN chief said that poor sanitation and open defecation have a disproportionate impact on women and girls. “They may face an increased risk of harassment and abuse, restrictions on their personal freedom of movement and increased health risks because of lack of access to sanitation facilities and to menstruation materials. Girls cannot wait for safe, clean, private toilets in their schools. And women should not have to wait for sanitation in public spaces and workplaces,” he said.

New Facebook features to protect users Soon, citizens can file FIR online SAN FRANCISCO, OCT 2 (IANS): Embroiled in a massive data breach and facing $1.63 billion in fine from the European Union (EU) privacy watchdog, Facebook on Tuesday introduced a new feature for its 2.3 billion users to hide or delete multiple comments at once from the options menu of their post. This feature is rolling out on desktop and Android and will be available on iOS in the coming months. “We are also testing ways to more easily search for and block offensive words from appearing in comments,” said Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Facebook. “If you see a friend or family member being bullied or harassed, now you can report someone on their behalf via the menu above the post that you are concerned about.” Facebook community

operations team will review the post, keep the report anonymous, and determine whether it violates its community standards. People will also be able to appeal decisions on cases involving bullying and harassment. Earlier this year, Facebook announced a process that allows people to request another review of their photo, video or post that has been taken down for violating community standards for nudity and sexual activity, hate speech or graphic violence. “We have now extended these reviews to bullying and harassment violations - this means that if your content has been taken down for bullying or harassment, you will have the opportunity to request another review,” said Facebook. If Facebook does not take it down after its initial review, users can also ask for

a second review if they think the social media giant made a mistake. “In the coming weeks, we will further expand our policies to better protect public figures against harassment regardless of age,” said Davis. The announcement comes at a time when Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, which is Facebook’s lead privacy regulator in Europe, has asked Facebook to submit more details in the incident where data of over 50 million users were hacked via “Access Tokens” or digital keys. The privacy watchdog could fine Facebook as much as $1.63 billion for the data breach. In the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook last week admitted that hackers broke into nearly 50 million users’ accounts by stealing their “access tokens” or digital keys.

NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (AGENCIES): Citizens can soon file complaints of seven crime and related services online and get the FIRs registered as the Centre looks at launching “citizen-centric portals” for all states, officials said. The portal will allow the citizens to seek antecedent verification of prospective employees like domestic helps, drivers, tenants or for any other purpose. “The state citizen-centric portals are ready to be launched in all states and Union Territories (UTs) soon,” a Home Ministry official said. The concept is a ‘SMART’ policing initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as enunciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide services to citizens and aid efficient police investigations. The virtual platform will offer online facility to register FIRs initially in seven crime and related services in 34 states and UTs that include person and address verification of employees, tenants and nurses, permission for hosting public events, lost and found articles and vehicle theft. It aims at turning

criminal investigation a “citizenfriendly” affair. The citizens’ reports and requests are forwarded to states and Union Territories police without loss of time for follow-up action, the official said. The citizens can also seek certification of their antecedents via the portal. To protect privacy of individuals concerned and for national security reasons, the crime data and reports can be searched only by authorised police officers. The citizens who seek criminal antecedent verification services will be provided responses through e-mail, another official said. While addressing an annual conference of police chiefs of all states in 2014 in Guwahati, the prime minister had advocated the concept of SMART policing in the country. Modi had said that he wanted a police force which took care of the country’s law and order in an efficient manner. “By ‘SMART’ policing, I mean S for strict but sensitive, M for modern and mobile, A for alert and accountable, R for reliable and responsive and T for techno-savvy and trained,” he said.

AFRAU Pangti demands execution of road project DIMAPUR, OCT 2 (NPN): Amur Falcon Roosting Area Union (AFRAU) Pangti has cried foul over non-construction of connectivity road to tourist spot (Amur Falcon Observation Area) despite the sanction of the project in 2016 by Ministry of Tourism under Swadesh Darshan Scheme. In a press release, AFRAU Pangti president, N Thungbemo Shitiri, accused the tourism department of being reluctant to implement the project even after numerous directives from higher authority for implementation. AFRAU alleged that due to “selfish interest” of some individuals and insincerity on the part of concerned department the project failed to take off till now. The union has warned that individuals and groups trying to make any profit out the project would be sternly dealt with. Further, the union has appealed to the responsible department to issue work order to the local deserving tenderer at the earliest before arrival of the bird i.e. second week of October). Failure to do so would compel the union to take its own course of action and the department would be held solely responsible for any untoward action, AFRAU warned. Meanwhile, AFRAU Pangti has convened a general meeting on October 7, 2018 at 2pm in the community hall, Pangti village. K Y M C
