CBI crisis: Led by Rahul, Oppn hits the street

NEW DELHI, OCT 26 (AGENCIES): Congressled opposition assembled outside the CBI headquarters on Friday to protest against the October 24 CBI shake-up even as the Supreme Court heard pleas of agency top bosses against their recent removal by the Government. Later, the leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, courted arrest and were taken to the police station. “Eight leaders and 150 workers were detained for 20 minutes and then released,” DCP South Vijay Kumar said. Top Congress brass marched from Dyal Singh College to the CBI headquarters here to agitate against the decision of the PMO to send CBI chief Alok Verma on leave pending an inquiry by the CVC. The protest was also held across the country. The CPI also joined the protests led by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. Later, the TMC also joined the protest march. Congress has accused the PM of removing the CBI chief to scuttle a potential Rafale scam probe by the agency and says the Govern-

Rijiju to attend cabinet meeting in Kiphire on Nov 9 KO H I M A , O C T 2 6 (AGENCIES): Union minister of state for Home, Kiren Rijiju will be attending the Nagaland cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on November 9 in Kiphire. In this regard, the Kiphire district administration has asked the department heads who are not in the station to be present in the state by Monday and to be prepared for the “important” meeting. The district administration Thursday held a coordination meeting chaired by ADC Reny Wilfred and attended by departmental heads and the stakeholders. It was informed that officers will be allowed to leave the station only with prior the permission of the District administration till the meeting is over. Wilfred said respective departments should take care of accommodation for respective director and secretaries if accompanied. He also asked the department to submit the name list of local officers of respective departments to the district administration so that they will be attached to respective secretaries and Directors.

ment has no legal powers to send the CBI boss on leave. The opposition is basing its argument on the Delhi Special Police Establishments Act, 1946, which was amended in 2014 and which says that the CBI chief shall be appointed by the selection committee consisting of the PM, leader of opposition and the CJI. Gandhi said only the selection committee could touch the director and the Government could not remove or send the CBI chief on an indefinite leave on its own. The opposition is also asking the PM what the urgency of packing up Verma at 2 am on October 24 was.

“This has never happened in India. You send a CBI chief on leave in the early hours and then seal his office. Why?” asked Congress leader Anand Sharma. Congress leader in the selection panel of CBI chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the Government had violated not just the statute but also the SC judgment of 1997 in the Vineet Narain case where the top court had ruled that the CBI chief must get a fixed two-year tenure to preserve the institution’s integrity. The judgment says notwithstanding the age of superannuation of the CBI chief he will remain in the job for two years. The

Nagaland globally 3rd in nasopharyngeal cancer

DIMAPUR, OCT 26 (NPN): Nagaland holds the dubious distinction of having the third highest incidences of nasopharyngeal cancer in the world that stems from addiction to tobacco and its by-products by majority of the population, principal secretary Health and Family Welfare I Himato Zhimomi said on Friday. While people in major towns like Dimapur

and Kohima have access to healthcare and dentists, Himato lamented that those in far-flung areas of the State were not as fortunate as dentists and even doctors were scarce. Speaking at the 16th annual general meeting of Nagaland chapter of Indian Dental Association (IDA) at Niathu Resort as a special invitee, Himato Zhimomi called for fiercely tackling nasopharyngeal cancer and taking dental care to remote areas of the State.

He outlined four challenges that dentists faced today. The first, according to him, was the need to upgrade skills and knowledge in an ever-evolving field like dentistry where there was “no place for second best”, alongside incorporating robotics and artificial intelligence to keep abreast with changing times. He said the second challenge was for dentists to do “lot of handholding in a society that is still vulnerable and largely unaware” and

‘Media freedom under threat across globe’ Spl. Correspondent

GUWAHATI, OCT 26 (NPN): Press freedom is under threat across the globe and South Asia is no different. In fact, some worrying trends emerging in this region have far-reaching implications for journalists everywhere. Speaking to reporters in the city on Friday from Paris as part of “Meet the Press” programme of Guwahati Press Club, Daniel Bastard, Head of Asia-Pacific desk, Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF), said as many as 150 journalists were killed in the last 15 years in Indian subcontinent alone. Of these, 71 scribes were killed in Pakistan, 42 in India, 15 in Sri Lanka, 12 in Bangladesh and 10 in Nepal. Referring to the trend in 2000-2010 that showed a clear link between conflict situation and killing of journalists, Daniel remarked that the trend had

changed since 2010. “From 2010 onwards, the number of journalists killed while reporting in countries that are not at war has tended to be higher than those reporting from war fields,” he pointed out. This is of particular significance to India, a stable democracy with a thriving independent press, where the graph of journalist killings has been rising in recent years,” he stressed. Incidentally, India is ranked 138th out of 180 countries in 2018 World P r e s s Fr e e d o m I n d e x brought out by RSF, headquartered in Paris. This situation can be contrasted with that in militancy-afflicted Pakistan where scribes have to work constantly under the shadow of the gun, or the situations prevailing earlier in Sri Lanka and Nepal torn by civil war. The RSF numbers of scribes killed in South Asian countries do not take into account those

who have disappeared like Yaamyn in the Maldives in 2014; neither do the casualty figures account for citizenjournalists being targeted like the seven bloggers killed in Bangladesh since 2013. Daniel emphasised that other worrying trends that needed to be addressed in the Indian subcontinent were the high level of censorship and self-censorship, lack of pluralism in certain countries and political affiliation of media owners. He said with mainstream journalism going increasingly online and the advent of alternative media, newer threats were rising. “We are now seeing online harassment of journalists by troll armies, dissemination of false information and hate speech messages calling for killing of journalists whose work displeases those in power and their supporters,” Daniel concluded.

adopt a humane approach while attending patients. The third challenge, he said was to serve in far flung areas where there was an acute shortage of doctors. He revealed that with around 150 to 200 dentists in the State, the shortage was felt more in remote areas and urged the dentists present to take up the challenge of visiting interior areas. Himato said the fourth challenge was for dentists to fight the scourge of tobacco consumption that had afflicted many families in the State. Urging the dentists to be ambassadors of hygienic living, he lamented that tobacco consumption was rampant even though it was outright unhealthy. Earlier in the programme, IDA Nagaland branch president Dr Kezeneilie Pienyu briefed the principal secretary on the issues concerning dentists in Nagaland.

Entrepreneurs need to build trust with customers, says Rio

KOHIMA, OCT 26 (NPN): Chief minister Neiphiu Rio urged entrepreneurs to build trust with customers in order to succeed in commercial ventures. He said this while launching the Entrepreneur Associates Innovation Fund (EAIF) Award under the theme “Stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship in the Northeast” organised by Entrepreneurs Associates (AE) at RCEMPA, Jotsoma on Friday. Congratulating EA for many success stories, Rio also encouraged the entrepreneurs and businessmen in Nagaland to work with dedication and sincerity to create employment opportunities and improve the State’s economy. Citing his own example how banks

had trusted him as an entrepreneur before he joined politics, Rio said building trust with others was a must for a businessman or leader and that once that trust was built, business opportunities would grow. Admitting the hurdles of receiving financial support from banks due to the existing land holding system in the State, Rio informed the gathering that the State government had passed a resolution to amend land laws, especially in foothills, to attract investors though they would not be able to buy land. He said 78.96% businessmen on an average received bank loans across India in 2014, while for Nagaland the figures were only 26.09% in 2011 and 31.04% in 2014. He said out of 74 RD

DIMAPUR, OCT 26 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) steering committee convenor Rh. Raising said that the Naga movement was a national resistance movement against the aggressor states and not a case of secession from them. He said Nagas confronted the aggressors with four-pronged strategy- military, political, diplomatic and prayer, saying “ours is a case of aggression on Nagalim by India and Myanmar.” Speaking at the prayer summit organized by Council Nagalim Churches (CNC) on October 25, Raising however said that the Indian leaders acknowledge the historical fact that Nagas were free from time immemorial. With the departure of the British, he said Nagas in the British occupied area declared their independence on August 14, 1947 and merged themselves with the ‘free Nagas, before India and Burma became independent.
