Rio pitches for ‘one Lockdown likely if uncontrolled spread continues solution, one people’

DIMAPUR, OCT 24 (NPN): With Nagaland’s sample positivity rate at 9% being higher than the national average, the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department has again expressed serious concern over the “uncontrolled spread” of COVID-19 infection in the state. Pointing out that the next three winter months was critical for the state in determining the fate of this pandemic, the department warned that total lockdowns could be imposed again in the event of an uncontrolled spread. “This is a crucial time for the state to enforce all SOPs strictly and immediately”, it added The department stated that the sample positivity rate of the State was higher than the national average at 9%. It said that the weekly sample positivity rate had increased rapidly from 4% in the last week of August to 18% this week (highest till date). Dimapur district was the worst hit as more than half of the cases were in Dimapur (54%) followed by Kohima (30%), it added. The percentage of traced

contacts, in the State, among confirmed cases have also increased from 7% in July to 56% as of this week, the department said. In its weekly bulletin issued on October 24, the department revealed that the increasing positivity among patients attending flu clinics in hospitals was worrying. It said most of them did not have travel history or known contact with a positive case-an indication of community transmission. It may be recalled that the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on October 18 admitted that India was in the community transmission stage. However, he added that it was limited only to certain districts and states. “We continue to see uncontrolled spread in closed settings like offices, restaurants, bakeries, religious communities, increasing risk elsewhere,” H&FW stated on Saturday. In its report last week, the department had warned of uncontrolled spread of COVID-19 in Nagaland, which could lead to a shift towards community transmission. According to the department, this has increased the risk of spread in the com-

super-spreader events occur where more than 10 to 15 cases or even hundreds are infected in a single event. Super-spreader events will easily lead to community transmission.

Men produce more Covid-19 antibodies than women: Study

LISBON, OCT 24 (IANS): On average, men produce more Covid-19 antibodies than women, say Portuguese researchers, adding that, 90 per cent of the patients have detectable antibodies up to seven months post contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The results, published in the European Journal of Immunology, also show that age is not a confounding factor in levels of antibodies produced, but disease severity is. “Our immune system recognizes the virus SARSCoV-2 as harmful and produces antibodies in response to it, which helps to fight the virus,” said study author Marc Veldhoen from Medicina Molecular Joao Lobo Antunes in Portugal. For the findings, the research team set up an inhouse sensitive specific and versatile Covid-19 serology (Read more on p-6) test. They started to moni-

Art. 370 won’t be restored, says Law minister

New Delhi, OCT 24 (PTI): The BJP on Saturday accused PDP president Mehbooba Mufti of “disrespecting” the Indian flag and asserted that the revocation of Article 370 was done constitutionally and that it will not be restored. Her comments that she will not hold the tricolour till the Kashmiri flag is restored is “downright denunciation” of the national flag’s sanctity, senior BJP leader and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister had on Friday said that she was not interested in contesting elections or holding the tricolour, the national flag, till the constitutional changes enforced on August 5 last year were rolled back.

tor the antibody levels of over 300 Covid-19 hospital patients and healthcare workers, and over 200 postCovid-19 volunteers. The results of this six months cross-sectional study show a classic pattern with a rapid increase of antibody levels within the first three weeks after Covid-19 symptoms and, as expected, a reduction to intermediate levels thereafter. “In this early response phase, on average men produce more antibodies than women, but levels equilibrate during the resolution phase and are similar between the sexes in the months after SARS-CoV-2 infection,” Veldhoen said. In the acute phase of the immune response, the team observed higher antibody levels in patients with more severe disease. Also, the results show that age is not a confounding

factor for the production of antibodies, as no significant differences were observed between age groups. Globally, 90 per cent of participants have detectable antibodies up to seven months post contracting Covid-19. Next, the research team evaluated the function of these antibodies, i.e. their neutralizing activity against the virus SARS-CoV-2. Also, the research team analysed the neutralizing capacity of the antibodies produced by the patients and volunteers. “Our work provides detailed information for the assays used, facilitating further and longitudinal analysis of protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2,” Veldhoen said. Importantly, it highlights a continued level of circulating neutralising antibodies in most people with confirmed SARS-CoV-2.
