Varun under attack over defence deals Arms deal whistle-blower claims Varun honey-trapped, blackmailed

India recently signed a deal with Dassault for 36 Rafale aircraft. “Any action against Thales may have jeopardised the Rafale deal. Moreover, contrary to previous announcements of getting 126 aircrafts, the government bought 36 aircrafts, paying double the price for individual units. It certainly appears to be the case that something is fishy,” Bhushan said. However, Bhushan and Yadav did not take Varun’s name during the press conference and instead asked journalists to refer to the letter. They claimed to have withheld photographic evidences pertaining to the matter. Allen wrote to the PM, Defence Minister, CBI and the NSA with all the details on Au-

gust and September this year. Varun said that he last met Verma when he was a post graduate student in London at the age of 22 years. “I am going to turn 37 now. I have never met him since I entered public life in 2004. The only reason why I even know of him is because his parents were members of parliament and was a respected family. I knew them as many other leaders knew them,” he said. Asked if he had come across any sensitive information during his tenure on the consultative committee on defence, he said, “Any MP who has been on that committee knows that not even 0.1 percentage of any confidential information is shared with the committee.”

NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (PTI): BJP MP Varun Gandhi was at the centre of a controversy over allegations that he had leaked defence secrets to middleman Abhishek Verma and arms manufacturers after being “honey trapped”, a charge he stoutly denied. US-based C Edmonds Allen, whose earlier complaints had led to investigation of arms dealer Abhishek Verma (he’s out on bail now), has written to the Prime Minister’s Office that Varun Gandhi, BJP MP, has been “honey trapped and compromised” by Verma. At a press conference here, Swaraj Abhiyan leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav released a letter written by Edmonds Allen, a New York-based lawyer, to the PMO last month that Varun was honey trapped and compromised by Verma. He alleged that Verma

“blackmailed” Varun, a member of the Defence Consultative Committee, into sharing sensitive information on crucial arms matters. Var un rejected these charges, saying he has not met Verma since 2004 and threatened to file a defamation suit against Bhushan and Yadav over the charges. “The entire information presented does not contain an iota of proof that either I had access or shared any communication regarding sensitive information to Verma,” Varun said. Allen, who was a partner of Verma, fell out with him in 2012. Verma is facing trial in the 2006 Naval War Room leak case. Bhushan alleged that despite having all the details, BJP government did not blacklist Thales, the company that sold scam-tainted Scorpene submarines, as Dassault acquired it.

DIMAPUR, OCT 20 (NPN): Appreciating the concern shown by three Dimapur apex bodies-- Naga Council Dimapur, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union, with regard to lightning bandh between Chumoukedima and Purana Bazaar, Co-ordination Committee on Fuel Adulteration (CCoFA) media cell said “had it not been for their solid endorsement calling for CBI enquiry within 15 days, it’s probable the people wouldn’t have downed their shutters in protest despite the police brutality at Chumoukedima”. Media cell reminded that CCoFA, comprising of 21 civil society organizations, was formed after thorough public deliberation represented by all the leading organisations including NCD, NWHD and DNSU at the meeting held on September 10, 2016. CCoFa said the endorsement of the three leading organisations greatly emboldened the gathering and the discourse further. “It is no exaggeration to say that had it not been for the

Parrikar rejects Swaraj Abhiyan charge Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today asserted the recently-signed Euro 7.878 billion-deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets was the best ever offered to any country, rejecting Swaraj Abhiyan’s Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav’s allegation that India paid double the price. Parrikar, however, refused to comment on the duo’s allegation that BJP parliamentarian Varun Gandhi was “honey trapped” into leaking defence secrets, a charge stoutly denied by the leader. “How much does it cost to level allegation?” an angry Parrikar retorted when asked about the charge levelled by Swaraj Abhiyan. “Rafale is the best deal that we have managed. It was because Prime Minister of India and President of France agreed that we have this deal which has not been offered to any other country,” Parrikar said. Parrikar said nothing has been proved in the alleged Scorpene leak and hence the case for banning any firm does not arise.

morale-boosting endorsement and support from these three apex organizations, the resolution to go for indefinite highway bandh in the state would not have been passed,” CCoFA stated. The committee said it appreciated the physical presence of DNSU office bearers at New Field Check gate, to express strong solidarity with the bandh volunteers. CCoFA appealed all “to stay strong in our resolve and also to stay true to the public resolution adopted on September 10 at Lake Shilloi, to usher in a better Nagaland”.

TYOD, CYO flay police action Tenyimi Youth Organization Dimapur (TYOD) and Chakhroma Youth Organization (CYO) in separate press statements condemned the action of police against the “peaceful protestors” on October 17 in Chumukedima. TYOD president Thejangulie Angami and general secretary Khrozote Kapfo claimed that many youths were beaten and harassed by the police during the peaceful

protest called by CCoFA on fuel adulteration issue. They said that state government instead of taking the issue seriously was trying to defend and hide the criminal activities. TYOD clarified that the general public was compelled to voice their right through protest rally since state government was harboring criminals and miserably failed to book the culprit and took necessary cognizance steps as per the law of the land on time. TYOD also condemned the used of abusive words by a responsible officer branding the volunteers and protester as “Mad Dog” (Tefü Kenya kemhie) when some leaders went to specify the matter. They said that such statement has wilfully hurt the sentiment of the people and were unacceptable and intolerable in any manner especially during such critical juncture. It therefore, appealed the responsible authority to check such irresponsible officer taking advantage of his/her uniform to sabotage in bringing a peaceful solution. (Cont’d on p-5)

Ibobi Singh, and BJP Manipur unit on Thursday took a dig at Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang for his speech on Wednesday during the ‘1st Conference of the Naga Village Authority of South Nagalim’ at Senapati, Manipur. Reacting to Zeliang’s speech, Manipur chief minister, Ibobi urged his counterpart to stop dreaming of things that would never become a reality. While on the other hand, BJP Manipur unit said that the party would not remain as silent spectator if any force attempted to disintegrate Manipur. Ibobi also urged Zeliang not to play communal politics by taking a next to impossible agenda. “Manipur is like a mini-India and the people here are living in harmony since time immemorial. Please stop inciting communal venom in the state. Stop trying to create misunderstanding among the different communities. Your dream will never come to reality,” Ibobi said. Ibobi claimed that everybody knew who were behind Zeliang’s government. “We all know that who are behind your government. Your government is running under the mercy of certain

organisation. It is also known that you will be ousted if not follow by their diktat,” said Ibobi. Manipur chief minister also asked Zeliang “not to talk too much without knowing the historical facts”. Ibobi said the history of Manipur goes back to 2000 or more years while Nagaland was created only in 1963 by carving out a small portion of Assam after the region became part of Indian Union. Ibobi said Manipur was never a part of India even after the Union got independence from British. As an independent nation, he said Manipur has a long history associated with both hills and valley. Ibobi reminded that ethnic communities of Manipur were living in harmony for more than 2000 years and it would be impossible to disintegrate the bond of brotherhood among the different communities. He asserted that no force can break the territorial integrity of Manipur and asked his counterpart to stop dreaming of distorting the state. Manipur chief minister also urged his counterpart to stop interfering in the affairs the state, saying Manipur would not give “a needleprick’s land” to others. Talking to reporters at its office in Imphal, state BJP leaders said that the party

would always stand against any attempt to break the territorial integrity of Manipur. They maintained that party would never compromise state’s territorial integrity and its boundary. The state BJP insisted that Manipur government file a criminal case against TR Zeliang. State BJP spokesperson, O Joy, said the party would welcome if the Nagaland chief minister discussed about promotion and protection of culture and tradition of a community and their development. However, he said the party objected the visit that discussed on South Nagaland or any other agenda that hurt the interest of integrity of the state. Joy said Zeliang’s statement was tantamount to instigating disintegration not only Manipur but also unity of India. Manipur government must take up legal action against T.R. Zeliang, Joy demanded. Many leaders of the party, who were present at the news conference, insisted the state government file a criminal case against the chief minister of Nagaland. They further demanded the state government take necessary steps to ban visit of Nagaland chief minister to the state like NSCN (I-M) leader Th Muivah was prevented from entering the state.

Govt mulls separate directorate for dental health serivce

Maongwati Aier with dentists after the IDANSB conference and AGM at NBRC. (NP) Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, OCT 20 (NPN): Nagaland Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) secretary Moangwati Aier on Thursday informed that the state government was working for creation of a separate directorate for Dental Health Services in the state, considering the importance of oral health service in the state. To this, state government has already approved creation of a separate directorate under health and family welfare. But it needed more formalities, said Moangwati while addressing the inaugural function of the

two-day-long 14th IDANSB conference and AGM at Nagaland bamboo resource centre, conference hall, 6th mile, Dimapur. While expressing his view that Dental care was one of the largest unmet health needs, Moangwati said government needed to give top priority on dental health care. He lamented that out of the 21 health centres in the state, only six centres have dental doctors. Taking note of the demand for doctors in the country which has gone up by 1.5% and that of nurses to 2.5%, he expressed optimism that Nagaland, after setting

up of the medical college, would be able to cater to the needs of the state. Apart from providing health services, Maognwati said health industry has been able offer various employment opportunities, at the same time generate huge revenue in the country. He further said with the increasing trend of health tourism in the country, Maognwati opined that Nagaland could also become one of them in the health map. “Around $1.60 million is expected from the health industry by 2016 and within four to five years it would double up so much of in-

come revenue is coming up,” he said. Maongwati further encouraged the doctors in the state to remain updated and to be innovative in their respective fields so that they could also be part of the growing industry in the country. Delivering a report on the status of dental surgeons in the state, H&FW additional director Dr. N Savino said out of the 150 registered dentists in the state, only 33 were regular employees while 15 were employed NHM on contractual basis. On the technical problem faced by dental students, he said dental practitioners were getting fewer opportunities as compared to MBBS. He said the required ratio of dental surgeon is 1:10. In this regard, Dr. Savino said the state should be having at least 190 to 195 dental surgeons in the government sector. Highlight of the programme included inauguration of trade fair by H&FW joint director Dr. H. Hotokhu Chishi and poster presentation.

Nagaland has highest nasopharyngeal cancer cases Electoral roll revision for civic polls Emilo K. Konyak KOHIMA, OCT 20 (NPN): A large number of patients from Nagaland suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer go to Shillong for treatment and most are referred for radiation therapy at the government civil hospital. (In September this year,at a workshop in Kohima, a three-year report of Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) 2012-14, showed that Nagaland has the number one prevalence of nasopharynx cancer or nasopharyngeal carcinoma in male and female, with an alarming rate of 15.2% and 6.8% rate per 100,000 populations respectively). Patients from Nagaland are generally referred to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences(NEIGRIHMS) Shillong. It may be also noted that as part of the central government tie up with state governments, patients from government hospitals are referred to NEIGRIHMS, a designated Postgraduate Medical Institute in lineage of AIIMS, New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh. However, NEIGRIHMS in

turn, refers cancer patient to the government civil hospital Shillong for radiation therapy. In an interview to Nagaland Post at the NHAK Thursday, senior cancer specialist at the Civil Hospital Shillong Dr. Judita Syiemlieh, estimated that around 90% of cancer patients who go to Shillong were from Nagaland and that a majority suffered from cancer of the nasopharynx. The magnitude could be understood from the figure that Dr Syiemlieh cited for the period 2015 when around 400 patients from Nagaland had gone for treatment for various types of cancer. The age group of the cancer patients ranged from 18 years to 60 years of age. Dr Syiemlieh also estimated that during the current year out of 98 cancer patients, around 40 were from Nagaland and most of who were suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer. After nasopharyngeal cancer, the next was throat, cervix and breast cancer, she said. Dr.Syiemlieh also expressed regrets that many patients do not complete the course for treatment

of cancer which usually takes around five years owing to various reasons and that it was not possible to trace such patients. Dr.Syiemlieh rooted for a networking among all hospitals in the region for collection of status of cancer survivors in order to be aware of the risk of cancer and also to make patients realise that follow-up was as important as the treatment. She also highlighted the general procedure for treatment of cancer ranging from radiation where 85% of all cancer patients need it, to chemo therapy or surgery. She also added that Cobalt Teletherapy Machine, used for the treatment of localized cancers was necessary for any cancer institute. She also said a Linear Accelerator Machine was crucial for external beam radiation treatment for patients as they are used to treat all areas of the body from head to toe. Dr. Syiemlieh also owing to lack of needed equipments doctors were unable diagnose cancer in time. In this regard, she pointed out that detection of nasopharyngeal cancer was among the most

difficult owing to its location. Dr. Syiemlieh’s contention that Nagaland lacked equipments for treatment of cancer was not based on facts. It may be noted that Eden Medical Centre in Dimapur possesses the latest state of the art medical equipments among private hospitals that included Linear Accelerator (ELEKTA) for delivering conventional, 3-D CRT and IMRT radiation for treatment of cancer. She also said NEIGRIHMS was not a cancer institute. However NEIGRIHMS has its oncology (cancer) wing and would soon be having its own 250-bedded cancer institute. Dr. Syiemlieh contended that patients who suspect cancer should visit the civil hospitals in Kohima and Dimapur and not any other hospital, for timely intervention. In her maiden visit she checked up patients who were treated in Shillong. Dr. Syiemlieh also conducted workshop at Minister Hill Baptist Church Kohima with the women department of various churches Thursday afternoon.
