Teen becomes Finland’s Prime Minister for a day
Aava Murto
HELSINKI, OCT 8 (IANS): A 16-year-old teenager, who actively campaigns on climate and human rights issues, became the Prime Minister of Finland for a day, as part of the country’s incumbent leader Sanna Marin’s fight to end gender gap, the media report. On Wednesday, Marin stepped aside letting Aava Murto to take her position for a day during which the latter met politicians and highlighted women’s rights in technology, the BBC reported. This is the fourth year of Finland’s participation in humanitarian organisation Plan International’s “Girls Takeover” initiative, which allows teenagers from countries from across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders and other sectors for a day. This year’s focus is on
promoting digital skills and technological opportunities for girls, with Kenya, Peru, Sudan and Vietnam among the countries holding their own swaps. In a speech, Murto said: “It is a pleasure to be speaking here before you today - although, in a way, I wish that I did not have to stand here, that campaigns like the Girls’ Takeover were no longer necessary. “However, the truth is that we have not yet achieved gender equality - not anywhere on earth. Although we have accomplished a great lot of good in this area, there is still much work that needs to be done.” Speaking ahead of the event, Marin, who became the world’s youngest Prime Minister when she was sworn in last year at the age of 34, stressed the importance of ensuring technologies are made “accessible to everyone”, reports the BBC. “They must not deepen the digital divide between countries or within societies.” Marin is the Finland’s third female premier and leads a centre-left coalition with four other parties - all headed by women, three of whom are under 35.
wins Nobel literature prize
STOCKHOLM, OCT 8 (AP): American poet Louise Glück won the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for her “candid and uncompromising” work, becoming the first US winner since Bob Dylan in 2016. The Nobel Committee praised the writer “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” The prize was announced in Stockholm by Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy. New York-born Glück, 77, who is a professor of English at Yale University, made her debut in 1968 with “Firstborn,” and “was soon acclaimed as one of the most prominent poets in American contemporary literature,” the Nobel Academy said. Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel literature committee, said Glück’s 12 collections of poetry were “characterized by striving for clarity.” They include “Descending Figure,” “The Triumph of Achilles” and “Ararat.” Olsson said her verses, which often draw on classical influences and examine family life, were marked by an “austere but also playful intelligence and a refined

The renewed fighting has increased concern that Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, and Russia, which has a defence pact with Armenia, could be sucked into the conflict. The clashes have also increased worries about the security of pipelines in Azerbaijan that carry natural gas and oil to Europe, and Moscow fears Islamist militants will enter Nagorno-Kara-
Jordanian King appoints new PM
Will hold China ‘accountable’ for what it did to US with Covid: Pence
AMMAN, OCT 8 (IANS): Jordan’s King Abdullah has appointed Bisher AlKhasawneh, a royal palace adviser, as the country’s new Prime Minister following Omar Razzaz’s resignation from the post, it was reported. Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the Royal Hashemite Court said: “His Majesty King Abdullah II tasks Bisher Khasawneh with forming a new Cabinet.” the Amman-based Roya News reported. According to the palace, Al-Khasawneh, also a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and a top envoy, will now oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections on November 10. Wednesday’s development comes after the Monarch accepted the outgoing Prime Minister’s resignation on October 3. On September 27, King Abdullah had dissolved the House of Representatives paving the way for the upcoming polls. The House of Representatives or the lower House comprises 130 seats, of which 115 members are elected by an open list proportional representation from 23 constituencies of between three and nine seats in size and 15 seats reserved for women.
WASHINGTON, OCT 8 (AP): The US Vice President Mike Pence expressed that the Donald Trump administration wants to improve its relationship with China but it is going to hold Beijing “accountable” for what it did to America with the deadly coronavirus. During the only vice presidential debate with his Democratic Party challenger Kamala Harris ahead of the November 3 presidential election, Pence asserted that China is to blame for the coronavirus. “We want to improve the relationship but we’re gonna level the playing field and we’re gonna hold China accountable for what they did to America with the coronavirus,” Pence said during the debate held at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night. “President Trump is not happy about it. He’s made that very clear. Made it clear again today. And China and the World Health Organisation did not play straight with the American people. They did not let our personnel into China to get information on the coronavirus until the middle of February,” the Republican vice president said. The coronavirus, which first emerged in China’s Wuhan city in December last
year, has so far infected over 35 million people and killed more than 1 million across the world, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. The US is the worst affected country with over 7.5 million cases and more than 2,10,000 deaths. Pence said that President Trump is “dealing with China from the outset of this administration, standing up to China that had been taking advantage of America for decades in the wake of Biden’s cheerleading for China.” “ P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p made that decision before the end of January to suspend all travel from China. And again, the American people deserve to know Joe Biden opposed President Trump’s decision to suspend all travel from China. He said it was hysterical. He said it was xenophobic, but President Trump has stood up to China. We are gonna continue to stand strong,” the Vice President said. Harris alleged that the Trump administration’s perspective and approach to China has resulted in the loss of American lives, American jobs and America’s standing. “There is a weird obsession that President Trump has had with getting rid of whatever accomplishment was achieved by President

Obama and Vice President Biden. For example, they created within the White House an office that basically was responsible for monitoring pandemics. They got rid of it,” she alleged. Pence immediately said that this is not true. “There was a team of disease experts that President Obama and Vice President Biden dispatched to China to monitor what is now predictable and what might happen. They pulled them out. We now are looking at 210,000 Americans who have lost their lives,” Harris said. The American consumers are paying thousands of dollars more for goods because of that failed trade war with China, she said. “Let’s talk about standing. Pew, a reputable research firm, has done an analysis that shows that leaders of all of our formerly
representing the whole of China,” the embassy said. “We hope Indian media can stick to Indian government’s position on Taiwan question and do not violate the ‘One China’ principle. “In particular, Taiwan shall not be referred to as a ‘country (nation)’ or ‘Republic of China’ or the leader of China’s Taiwan region as ‘President’, so as not to send the wrong signals to the general public.” Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu scoffed at Beijing’s advice to Indian media. “India is the largest
democracy on Earth with a vibrant press & freedomloving people. But it looks like communist #China is hoping to march into the subcontinent by imposing censorship. #Taiwan’s Indian friends will have one reply: GET LOST!” he said in a tweet. New Delhi has no formal diplomatic relations with Taipei, but both sides have close business and cultural ties. India’s government has carefully avoided upsetting China over Taiwan. But relations became fraught after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in June, and there have been calls from some Indian nationalist groups for a boycott of Chinese goods. “The Chinese government behaves like a street goon, not like an aspiring super-power. It threatens us,” said Nitin Gokhale, the editor of a defence and security website, after receiving the Chinese embassy’s email.
ROME, OCT 8 (IANS): Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Thursday announced his government’s decision to make wearing of masks mandatory in outdoor spaces in an effort to curb the further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. In his announcement, Conte said that latest measure was required to avoid returning to another economically devastating lockdown in Italy, one of the worst-hit countries in Europe, the BBC reported. “From now on, masks and protective gear have to be brought with us when we leave our house and worn. We have to wear them all the time unless we are in a situation of continuous isolation,” he was quoted as saying. Besides outdoor spaces, masks must also be worn in shops, offices, on public transport, and in bars and restaurants when not seated at a table, the Prime Minister further
said.
Italians faced some of the strictest lockdown measures in the world when the country became the first in Europe to be overwhelmed by the pandemic earlier in the year.
allied countries have now decided that they hold in greater esteem and respect (Chinese President) Xi Jinping, the head of the Chinese Communist Party, than they do Donald Trump, the president of the United States, the commander-in-chief of the United States. This is where we are today because
of a failure of leadership by this administration,” Harris said. The Democratic vice-presidential candidate alleged that Trump has betrayed America’s friends and embraced dictators around the world. “Let’s take for example Russia. America’s intelligence community told us Russia interfered in the election of the president of the United States in 2016 and is playing in 2020. Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, said the same. “But Donald Trump, the commander-in-chief of the United States of America, prefers to take the word of Vladimir Putin over the word of the American intelligence community,” she alleged.

China tells Indian media not to call Taiwan a country Italy makes wearing of masks mandatory in outdoor spaces Taiwan says ‘get lost’ NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (AGENCIES): China was accused by Taiwan of trying to impose censorship in India after its embassy in New Delhi advised journalists to observe the “one-China” principle after newspapers carried advertisements for Taiwan’s national day. Coming just months after deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops on the disputed Himalayan border between the two Asian giants, the controversy has flared at a time when Indian sentiments toward China are filled with antipathy and suspicion. China’s hackles were raised on Wednesday by advertisements placed in leading Indian newspapers by Taiwan’s government to mark the democratic, Chinese-claimed island’s national day on Saturday. The advertisement carried a photograph of President Tsai Ing-wen

postponed after sex abuse allegations rocked the Swedish Academy, the secretive body that chooses the winners of the literature prize, and sparked a mass exodus of members. After the academy revamped itself in a bid to regain the trust of the Nobel Foundation, two laureates were named last year, with the 2018 prize going to Poland’s Olga Tokarczuk and the 2019 award to Austria’s Peter Handke. But Handke’s prize caused a storm of protest: A strong supporter of the Serbs during the 1990s Balkan wars, he has been called an apologist for Serbian war crimes. Several countries including Albania, Bosnia and Turkey boycotted the Nobel awards ceremony in protest, and a member of the committee that nominates candidates for the literature prize resigned. On Monday, the Nobel Committee awarded the prize for physiology and medicine for discovering the liver-ravaging hepatitis C virus. Tuesday’s prize for physics honored breakthroughs in understanding the mysteries of cosmic black holes, and the chemistry prize on Wednesday went to scientists behind a powerful geneediting tool.

Azerbaijan says 31 Azeri civilians have been killed and 154 wounded since Sept. 27 but have not disclosed information about military casualties. Nagor no-Karabakh said 350 of its military personnel and 19 civilians have been killed. Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s main demand for a ceasefire is for Armenia to set a timetable for a withdrawal from NagornoKarabakh and surrounding Azeri territories. Armenia has ruled out a withdrawal from territory it considers its historic homelands. It has also accused Turkey of military involvement in the conflict and sending in mercenaries, allegations denied by Ankara.

YEREVAN/BAKU/GEN E VA ( AG E N C I E S ) : Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians fought with artillery and heavy guns on Thursday as the United States, France and Russia stepped up efforts to secure a ceasefire and avert a wider war in the South Caucasus, reports reuters. Azerbaijan said the city of Ganja had come under fire, deep inside its territory. Ethnic Armenians who control the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh inside Azerbaijan said Stepanakert, its main city, had been shelled by Azeri forces. In a sign of growing alarm in the region, the head of a six-country military alliance that is led by Russia and includes Armenia warned that the group could intervene if Armenian sovereignty were threatened. The continued fighting and rising tension underlined the difficulties facing U.S., Russian and French officials meeting in Geneva to try to halt fighting in which at least 400 people have been killed since it broke out on Sept. 27. Azeri Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov was due to attend Thursday’s talks, but no direct meetings have
