Piscataway , Nov 5 (AP): Authorities say a former Rutgers University student stabbed two people in its business school and himself and all three are being treated at a hospital. The university sent out an alert just before 3 pm Friday saying there had been a stabbing at the business school in New Brunswick and telling people to avoid the area and take shelter. About a half-hour later, the school sent another alert saying a suspect was in custody and the area was safe. Officials say a former student injured another student and a faculty member. No charges had yet been filed. Officials didn’t say how serious the injuries were. Eyewitnesses described pools and trails of blood at the scene.
presidential aides over allegations that they pressured businesses into giving $70 million to two foundations Choi controlled. There are also allegations that Choi, who has no government job, regularly received classified information and meddled with various state affairs, including the appointment of ministers and policy decisions. ``I came out today because this is not the country I want to pass on to my children,’’ said one of the demonstrators, Choi Kyung-ha, a mother of three. ``My kids have asked me who Choi Soon-sil was and whether she’s the real president, and I couldn’t provide an answer.’’ Police estimated the crowd at around 43,000, although protest organizers said about 130,000 people turned out.

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (AFP): The US military confirmed on Friday it had killed al-Qaida’s emir for northeastern Afghanistan during an air strike last month, in a major blow to the group as it seeks to reestablish safe havens in the country. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook described the assault that killed Farouq al-Qahtani as a “precision strike” and said it took place on October 23 in Kunar, Afghanistan. “This successful strike is another example of US operations to degrade international terrorist networks and target terrorist leaders who seek to attack the US homeland, our interests and our allies abroad,” Cook said in a statement. He said another alQaida leader in the country, Bilal al-Utabi, was targeted in a separate strike, though the results of that attack were not yet known.

MOSUL, Nov 5 (AP): Iraqi special forces launched a two-pronged assault deeper into Mosul’s urban center, unleashing the most intense street battles against Islamic State militants since the offensive began nearly three weeks ago. Smoke rose across eastern neighborhoods of Iraq’s second-largest city as heavy fighting continued after sundown, with explosions and machine gun fire echoing in the streets as mosques called for evening prayer. More than 3,000 Iraqi troops took part in the assault under heavy US-led coalition air support, but the pace of the fight also slowed as Iraqi forces moved from fighting in more rural areas with few civilians to the tight, narrow streets of Mosul proper. Sniper fire repeatedly stalled the advance, as commanders called in airstrikes or artillery support after
coming under fire. As the operation got underway, columns of armored vehicles wound through the desert, pushing through dirt berms and drawing heavy fire as they closed in on the middle-class Tahrir and Zahara districts. The area was once named after former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Seven suicide attackers in explosives-laden vehicles barreled toward the troops, with two getting through and detonating their charges, Lt Col Muhanad al-Timimi told The Associated Press. The others were destroyed, including a bulldozer that was hit by an airstrike from the US-led coalition supporting the offensive. At least seven special forces troops were killed and an officer and three soldiers were wounded, said an Iraqi military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to brief reporters.
“The operation is going well, but it’s slow. These kinds of advances are always slow,” said Iraqi special forces Capt Malik Hameed, as IS fighters could be seen running in the distance to reposition themselves. “If we tried to go any faster we would take even more injuries.” An Iraqi television journalist traveling in a Humvee was wounded in one of the suicide car bomb attacks. Earlier, at the eastern approach to the city’s urban center, militants holed up in a building fired a rocket at an Iraqi Abrams tank, disabling it and sending its crew fleeing from the smoking vehicle. The advance in that area then stalled. The push began as dawn broke with artillery and mortar strikes on the Aden, Tahrir, and Quds districts, just west of the special forces’ footholds in the Gogjali and Karama neighborhoods, al-Timimi said.

SEOUL, Nov 5 (AP): Tens of thousands of South Koreans poured into the streets of downtown Seoul on Saturday, using words including ``treason’’ and ``criminal’’ to demand that President Park Geun-hye step down amid an explosive political scandal. The protest, the largest anti-government demonstration in the capital in nearly a year, came a day after Park apologized on live television amid rising suspicion that she allowed a mysterious confidante to manipulate power from the shadows. Holding banners, candles and colorful signs that read ``Park Geun-hye out’’ and ``Treason by a secret government,’’ the demonstrators, including many students, packed a large square in front of an old palace gate and the nearby

LOS ANGELES, Nov 5 (PTI): Kamala Harris, California’s Attorney General, is on the cusp of becoming the first Indian- American Senator in the US Congress with latest polls placing her “far ahead” of her rival days before the November 8 general elections. Harris, 51, has already got the backing of US President Barack Obama+ and Vice President Joe Biden to be the state’s next Senator, brightening her chances to become the first from the community ever to be a member of the Upper House. Kamala Harris+ heads into the US Senate election with a considerable lead over fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez, whose plan to coalesce Republicans and Latinos behind her has not materialised, according to a new poll. Harris is far ahead of Sanchez for US Senate, The Sacramento Bee reported yesterday. She is leading Sanchez, a 10-term congresswoman from Orange, 47 to 23 per cent, among likely voters. Some 17 per cent remain undecided, and another 13 per cent volunteered that they plan to sit out the contest between two members of the same party. Among those who have already voted, 55 per cent chose Harris, 26 per cent backed Sanchez and 14 per cent said neither, the report said. While Sanchez has touted herself as the business-friendly choice for disaffected voters, about one-third of Republicans
