Houses and structures being destroyed by Assam officials along Nagaland-Assam border on Monday.

Sushanta Roy DIPHU, NOV 27: Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal followed up on his pre-poll promise, that illegal encroachers will be evicted from the soil of the state, with action. In this regard, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authorities on Monday carried out a massive eviction drive inside the proposed reserve forest under Lahorijan forest range (administered by Karbi Anglong West Division forest), contiguous to Dimapur.

All together 156 out of 162 tin roofed bamboo structures and a few semiRCC houses were demolished by bulldozers and were later torched by hundreds of armed forest officials in three flanking locations, just 8 kilometres away from Dimapur. The three locations where the most structures were destroyed were Hajong Pur, Kramsa Model Village and Hatuka. Nearly four hundred armed personnel of Assam Police, paramilitary, and Forest guards with two back-hoe loaders carried out

the demolition from 7.30 a.m. Anticipating massive armed forces build-up, most of the residents ran off, deserting their premises without putting up resistance. In this drive around 2000 bighas of illegally occupied forest land was reportedly cleared. Officials alleged that most of the illegal occupants had allegedly crossed over to Assam from Dimapur. Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief executive member, Tuliram Ronghang said: “We have dedicated ourselves for pro-

tecting 10434 square kilometer land of Karbi Anglong and shall not allow any illegal encroachment in any place of our autonomous area.” He said that the next eviction will be carried out in the inter-district borders and along Meghalaya boundary. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Abhajit Rabha and SP Karbi Anglong, Dr. Shiva Prasad also hinted that the eviction drive will continue without breaks till all the encroached forest areas were cleared.

D imapur , N ov 2 7 (NPN): Lotha Hoho has taken exception to the programme where the Nagaland Special Development Zone (NSDZ) which was shelved after stiff opposition by apex Naga tribes led by the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) is sought to be revived through a discussion under the Coordinator of Business Summit at the Nagaland International Trade Expo (NITex) on November 28. In a joint statement LH chairman Mhao Humtsoe and general secretary Er. Mhondamo Ovung also expressed shock that the Business Summit at NITex has snubbed LH and instead invited the local landowner and a sub ordinate body, the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO). In doing so, LH said the Business Summit Coordinator had shown utter disregard to the apex organisation of the Lothas by inviting a subordinate unit, LLRPO to revive “a controversial matter” like NSDZ which it (LH) had strongly opposed along

brothers, Dimapur had become part of Nagaland even before it had attained statehood and “on their own the Kachari tribe choose to be part of Naga Hills in spite of their rich and historical evidences that they were once an independent kingdom ”. IMTN asserted that if the present political consultation did not cover areas and lands inhabited by the Kacharis, Kukis, Garos and Karbis, especially Dimapur district of which the Kacharis were “traditional and ancestral” land owners, then it had no objection to alienation and discriminatory attitude of not being invited as stakeholders in the consultative meet. “... but assuming from the statement of various political leaders of both NPG groups and GOI, the areas inhabited by the four minority indigenous recognized tribes seems very much part of the negotiations by various NPGs, then the omission of these group shows the discriminatory attitude and alienation of its legitimate stakeholders in

two cited Resolutions (No. vi & vii), were contrary to the provisions of Article 371A, of the Indian Constitution, the Lotha Hoho, reaffirmed that it would not allow the implementation of NSDZ within any Lotha area, of Wokha district or elsewhere. Further, LH reminded that if earlier, any ‘No Objection Certificate (NOC)’ had been issued or MOU signed for the NSDZ, the LH will treat such NOC and MOU, as Null and Void” Hence, the two LH leaders added that any relaxation of entry and settlement of non-Nagas was against the interest of Nagas in general. The two leaders also asserted that Lotha Hoho would not honour any decision or resolution adopted on NSDZ in its present form by the Business Summit or any agency. “Such decision/resolution will instead be treated as an insult to the Lotha tribe and the Lotha Hoho will oppose tooth and nail such decision/resolution, if implemented within its jurisdiction,” it warned.

Gov for strengthening NE ties with ASEAN Scholarship issue: DNSU D imapur , N ov 2 7 (NPN): Governor PB Acharya stressed on developing and strengthening ties of the Northeast with ASEAN region through trade, culture, people-to-people contacts and physical infrastructure. Addressing the North East Governors’ Conclave in the presence of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at New Delhi on November 23, Acharya said with right focus on development of connectivity, infrastructure and cooperation with the neighbouring countries Nagaland could become one of the trading/ economic hubs connecting ASEAN countries. On development and connectivity, Acharya said if the state had good road connectivity, increase in trade with neighbouring countries was possible. He felt that once the ongoing construction of a four-lane road between Kohima and

Dimapur was complete, it would open up smooth connectivity for the State as well as the region. Opening new and reactivating dormant trade routes, as well as facilitating border trade and transit points, would not only boost ties between neighbouring countries, but also improve economic condition of the State, he said. Acharya said youth of the State were in an advantageous position due to their English medium education. Youth with proper skill training with English base could be strong service providers to South East Asian countries, he added. To promote ties with ASEAN countries, Acharya also suggested cultural exchange programmes with those countries. He said North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur could play a key role in this as nearly 5,000 performing artists teams were registered

Minority tribes peeved with Speaker DIMAPUR, NOV 27 (NPN): Indigenous Minority Tribes of Nagaland (IMTN) has expressed its unhappiness at the alleged discriminatory attitude of the State government, particularly NLA speaker, in ignoring the four indigenous recognised tribes of Nagaland for the proposed consultative meeting on Naga political issue on December 4. In a statement issued by its president K. Lun Tungnung on Monday, IMTN reminded the NLA Speaker that the four tribes had played their role and made sacrifices for the Naga political movement since its inception– from being members of Naga Club to signing of historical documents like Simon Commission by Lenjang Kuki, “where many of the present so called stake holders tribes were not even remotely present during those days”. IMTN said the four minority tribes were mostly inhabitants of Dimapur and present Peren district and that due to the “magnanimity” of Kachari

with other Naga tribe organisations such as Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) and Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC). LH said the attempt to discuss the matter at the Business Summit was a “clear indication of an ulterior motive and a hidden agenda” and viewed it as an attempt to “infuse division and crisis within the Lotha community”. The two LH leaders also said they had submitted their objections on NSDZ in its present form, which was submitted to the State government through Chief Secretary on October 9, 2017. The two leaders said LH had clearly pointed out that its objections to NSDZ were based on the following: 1. the resolution in the state Consultative meeting of September 26,2014 which sought to evolve permanent settlement of non Nagas (Resolution No. vi), to liberalise the system of entry and stay of non Nagas in the NSDZs (Resolution No. vii). 2. Also since the nature of the proposed NSDZ and in particular the

such crucial stage of our political movement,” it added. IMTN alleged that omission of social bodies like CNTC, NTC, Senior Citizen Forum, Nagaland GB Federations and IMTN in the initial invitation for the consultative meeting showed the hollowness and discriminatory attitude to keep “sons of the soil” away from discussing issues relating to their traditional and ancestral lands and issues within their own State. It added that the “attempt and conspiracy” to keep away the indigenous recognised tribes of Nagaland spoke volumes of the present government’s real intent and discriminatory attitude. Urging for inclusion of the four minority tribes in the consultation process, as a solution to the Naga political issue was on the horizon, IMTN demanded that no tribe or group having a stake whether big or small, weak or strong be left out and be equally made part of the consultative meet to discuss issues affecting all in the days to come.

with NEZCC from all eight “NAMASTE” States (NNagaland, A-Arunachal Pradesh, M-Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, A-Assam, S-Sikkim, T-Tripura and E-East ). Acharya felt that efforts should be made for setting up Special Economic Zones and said Nagaland needed to be developed as an exporthub that could link up with India’s neighbourhood in South and South East Asia. He said the State produced the best bamboo products at cheap prices due to availability of raw material as well as manpower, while floriculture had emerged as a major business option for unemployed youth and it them fetched good annual turnover from exports. Acharya said educational and healthcare facilities in border areas were important to forge greater ties between India and ASEAN countries.

to launch first phase stir

DIMAPUR, NOV 27 (NPN): As a mark of protest for non-release of pending scholarship amount, the Diphupar Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has decided to launch the phase first of agitation in the form of poster campaign. In a press note, DNSU president Kumlamo and secretary, Pitovi Achumi hit out at the state government and the concerned department for their “callous attitude” towards the plight of the students. “The decision of the government to release the scholarship on instalment basis was a mockery to the state’s education system and reflected the seriousness of the government towards the students, upon whom the future of the state and country lies,” it said. Despite repeated appeals made to the state government by the students to release their scholarship, DNSU said the government paid no heed to their demands. This clearly showed its indifferent attitude towards the student fraternity, it added. Therefore, in the interest of the student community, DNSU said it had “resolved to confront this injustice until every student receives his/her scholarship that is due to them.” DNSU said it would not hesitate to carry out further course of action if the government failed to act positively. Meanwhile, DNSU appealed to all the right thinking individuals and organisations to support the student fraternity in this fight for justice.
