D I M A P U R , N OV 1 7 (NPN): After Angam Public Organisation’s (APO) statement on November 11 and reaffirmation on November 15, attracted flak from senior elders of the Angami community for banning any form of protests or agitations during festive season under APO jurisdiction, the APO Advisory Board sought to correct the drift by issuing a statement over the controversy. It may be recalled that the APO statement had set the stage for a collision with the Public Coordination Committee (PCC) which had planned to stage sit-in demonstration in the New Secretariat for Lok Ayukta Act, termination of all backdoor appointees etc. APO Advisory Board through Zeneituo Yano acknowledged that the unending corruption, nepotism and favouritism was plaguing Naga society. It said as youths are the future hope it should be the endeavour of all to rid present social evils in order to bequeath the future generation with a corruption-free society. Taking cognizance of the APO statements on No-

vember 11 and 15, the APO Advisory Board clarified that it supports any peaceful protest, dharna conducted by any organisation for a genuine cause; more so when it pertained to corruption, backdoor appointments, nepotism and any form of discrimination. Therefore, APO Advisory Board reiterated that it does not subscribe to any “directives issued on restricting peaceful protests” and therefore appealed to APO to “extend its full support to the movement for the betterment of our society.” While lauding ACAUT and PCC for “taking the cause upfront” APO Advisory Board however expressed objection to protestors “showing thumbs down and shouting abusive words” at passing vehicles and occupants. While reaffirming the right to “peaceful” protest, APO Advisory Board hoped that the protesters would refrain from using abusive words or any form of violent demonstrations and that ACAUT and PCC would take the movement forward to its logical conclusion.

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 7 (NPN): All ten MLAs from NPF (Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü) boycotted the meeting of the Parliamentary Working Committee of the Legislators’ Forum on Naga Political issue in protest against the NLA speaker of being partisan in his dealings and for not upholding the sanctity of the speaker’s chair. The MLAs expressed reservations on the speaker’s position as chairman of the forum “when (the Speaker) cannot uphold the Constitution of the Country and (the) Assembly Rules.” “When one cannot stand for the truth and the rule of law, one cannot be expected to bring about any positive things on such important issues as our Naga political problem,” the legislators said in a signed letter addressed to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker. The 10 legislators further went on to place on record their position on the Naga political problem saying they “are ready to pave way in the event of the realization of a negotiated political settlement that is honourable and acceptable to the people.”

DIMAPUR, NOV 17 (NPN): Nagaland Legislators Forum (NLF) on Naga Political issue on Friday held a meeting under the chairmanship of NLA speaker, Dr. Imtiwapng Aier, wherein the house adopted a five-point resolution. made by various apex tribe organisations, NGOs and political parties in Nagaland for an inclusive solution that would promote broad consensus. The state government has also made several appeals to the NSCN(K) to renew the cease fire agreement and return to the negotiating table. The state leaders have also urged upon the government of India to include the NSCN(K) in the broad –based talks to reach a peaceful and permanent solution to the Naga political issue. Meanwhile, sources informed that 15-member delegates of Working Committee NNPGs would be returning on November 19. settlement of the Naga Political issue. 3. The Forum opines that with involvement of the six NNPGs along with NSCM (I-M) in the talks, it is the right time to finalize a solution that is inclusive. 4. In view of Nagaland Assembly Elections due in few months, it is strongly considered that it is important to ensure that the settlement of the Political issue is done before elections to prevent shift of focus from settlement to election. Therefore, it is decided that an all Political Party Meeting should be convened by the Chief Minister at the earliest. 5. NLF further decided to make an appeal that a delegation of Legislators should go to New Delhi to meet the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Central Leaders to submit the Memorandum on the Naga Political Issue seeking an early solution before the ensuing State Election, 2018.

DIMAPUR, NOV 17 (NPN): Power minister, C. Kipili Sangtam on Friday informed that the state government is awaiting response from the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to assist the Power department in exploring the possibility of lending an available transformer from the regional pool. Though the partially damaged 20MVA transformer had been repaired and successfully tested on November 14, Kipili said that the department was also exploring the possibility of making use of an old repaired transformer of different capacity to supplement the power supply to some extent. The Power minister also informed that the power supply to Peren district is being fed from Kohima RE sub-station In the meantime, he said the Power department was also pressing hard with the earlier proposal for upgrading the present capacity with 100 MVA transformer. Kipili Sangtam said the feeding of Power supply from the second transformer started in limited areas by restricting the load to 50% of the capacity. Subsequently, the loading on the transformer was scaled up to feed more areas and the total capacity was brought to 40MVA, he added. (Cont’d on p-7)

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 7 (NPN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organisation (NVCO) said it has submitted a representation on November 16,2017 to the chief secretary of Nagaland for laying down rules and criteria for induction of state information commissioner. According to NVCO media cell, the representation was made since the state did not have any rule or criteria as stated which provided opportunities for politicians including the chief minister to exploit the lacuna to induct their own candidate for reasons best known to them. NVCO also pointed out that the same practise bedevils the NPSC where members were appointed based on the decisions of politicians. NVCO said while it had made an open

In this regard, NVCO demanded that the bias has to end and that induction of members of the SIC has to be transparent and allow public consultation and discussions before short listing candidates. KOHIMA, NOV 17 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on Friday assured that Nagaland Lokayukta Bill would be tabled during coming winter session (December 14) and subsequently passed by the house if the members agree after debate and discussion. The chief minister further said that the bill would be tabled in the house only after the Standing Committee on Lokayukta submits its report. “As soon as the standing committee submits the report it will be tabled in NLA. It is also the wish of the state government to make Nagaland a corruption free state,” he stated. In this regard, parliamentary secretary and chairman of the Standing Committee on Lokayukta, Er. Levi Rengma has called for a consultative meeting with the sub-committee and ACAUT on November 20 at 1 p.m. in the committee room of NLA secretariat. All members of the committee, sub-committee and ACAUT representatives have been asked to attend the meeting. Zeliang made this assurance during the meeting held with Public Coordination Committee (PCC) at his

residence Friday afternoon. Another meeting was held with the PCC and the Standing Committee members later in the evening. Earlier during the day, the PCC submitted a 10 point charter of demands, reminding the government of the points which the committee had been agitating for the past three days. PCC convener, Tia Longchar, ACAUT chairman, Joel Naga and advisor ACAUT, Kezhokhoto Savi after briefing the chief minister and chairman of the Standing Committee on Lokayukta, Er. Levi Rengma, also demanded that a special session be summoned to pass the bill. In response, chief minister stated that the government had never opposed passing the Lokayukta bill in the assembly and assured that the government would do anything that was good and beneficial for the people of the state. On the appointment of Lokayukta chairman, Zeliang was apprehensive that state may not be able get a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge to head the institution, saying “it may not be good to get outsiders for Nagas.” Zeliang also suggested the committee members to

study and compare the Bill with that of other states to make the law useful. “Else simply passing the Bill will not serve the purpose,” he said. Er. Levi Rengma explained that owing to the frequent crises in the government, the members were unable sit together to discuss on the matter. Er. Levi said there were 24 states in the country which had passed Lokayukta Bill and the committee has compared and taken points from these states. He said despite Karnataka being the first state to pass the Lokayukta Bill, it was facing difficulties. Er. Levi also echoed CM’s view with regard to appointment of Lokayukta chairman. Er. Levi assured the PCC members that the committee would be submitting its final report after the November 20 meeting. To this, Kezhokhoto Savi said, initially the state may struggle when Lokayukta is instituted. However, he said the state government should not be apprehensive about appointment of the chairman but first pass the Bill at the earliest. On the other hand, ACAUT member said that the bill should not be on the lines of the Vigilance Commission, which was “a toothless tiger”.

M’laya legislator withdraws support to Congress govt Correspondent

Shillong, Nov 17: Independent legislator Robinus Syngkon on Thursday withdrew support to the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance government ahead of the assembly elections next year. “I have withdrawn support to the Mukul Sangmaled government since I have lost confidence in him,” Syngkon said. Moreover, he described that his experience in the government has always been “unpleasant”. “There was not much cooperation from the ministers though legislators appointed as parliamentary secretaries were to assist the ministers who look after various departments,” Syngkon said. Syngkon, a former parliamentary secretary along with another Independent legislator Justine Dkhar had met BJP President Amit Shah on August at New Delhi. BJP Vice President

J.A.Lyngdoh claimed both the legislators had joined the party, which had no members in the 60-member House assembly. Election to the 60member state assembly is scheduled to be held in February-March 2018. However, the withdrawal support to the Congress government will not have any serious impact as the Congress has 30 seats – one short of a majority in the 60-member legislature. The Nationalist Congress Party, which has two members, one member from the North-East Democratic Socialist Party and 10 independent legislators are supporting the Congress. The opposition Meghalaya People’s Front is made up of eight United Democratic Party legislators, two from the National People’s Party. The Hill State People’s Democratic Party, which has four members and two independents, are not part of the Meghalaya People’s Front.

mocks Tharoor; Allow Kambala races minus SC questions govt on drafting Scindia tell him to study history the cruelty: Centre tells SC of witness protection scheme

Supreme Court of India NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre as to why a draft scheme cannot be formulated for witness protection in the country when specific provisions in this regard were already there in the NIA Act. It said that the Ministr y of Home Affairs (MHA) could at least come out with a draft programme for witness protection and asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to give his suggestions on the issue. “In the NIA (National Investigation Agency) Act, there are specific provisions for witness protection. Why cannot it be there for all?,” a bench comprising jus-

tices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said. “We understand there are lakhs of cases but it can be done for sensitive cases. Why cannot the Ministry of Home Affairs make out some draft programme on witness protection?” the bench said. The apex court also asked all the states to file their reply on the issue of implementation of their respective witness protection programme within six weeks. A dvo c a t e G a u r av Agarwal, who has been appointed as an amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter, told the bench that he has written a letter to the Centre and all the

chief secretaries and home secretaries on this issue. The bench also sought to know from the states about their witness protection programmes and steps taken in this regard. The issue of the witness protection programme had cropped up when the apex court was hearing a PIL seeking protection for witnesses in rape cases involving self-styled preacher Asaram Bapu. It had asked the petitioners, who are witnesses in the case related to Asaram, to implead all the states as a party on the issue of witness protection programme. The petitioners have sought an investigation into the instances of attacks and disappearances of witnesses in cases against Asaram. The apex court had on March 24 questioned Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over the status of implementation of witness protection schemes till now and had directed them to provide security cover to the witnesses in rape cases against Asaram, who is at present in jail.

The court ordered the CBI to file a report in four weeks. “It was expedient on the part of the Siwan Superintendent of Police to file an FIR... he miserably failed to take action. Kaif is now on bail... Both Kaif and Javed (another accused in the Ranjan case) were remanded only after tge writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court,” Pandey submitted. The counsel submitted that serious action should be taken against Yadav for “harbouring and screening” offenders.

they were less concerned about their honour when the British were trampling all over it. They scurried to accommodate themselves. So let’s face it, there is no question, that we were complicit,” he had said. Tharoor, however, backtracked a day later, claiming that he had not meant to disparage the Rajput community as a whole. “I am dismayed that some BJP supporters are claiming I attacked Rajput honour... I spoke about the Maharajahs who made their accommodations with the British. I have never made a communal comment in my life,” he tweeted.

State government had then promulgated the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Ordinance of 2017 in July. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, for PETA, said the provisions in the Bill and the ordinance were the same, “word-to-word”. PETA said the ordinance violates the Animal Welfare Board of India versus A. Nagaraja verdict of the Supreme Court which made illegal any practice or activity inflicting bovine animals with unnecessary pain and suffering as “inher-

ent cruelty”. Justice Chandrachud asked the Karnataka lawyers, “By issuing the ordinance are you trying to escape the requirement of Presidential consent to laws?” “Can we have that kind of ordinance-making powers with a State?” Chief Justice Misra asked Venugopal. Venugopal responded that the President had refused consent on the basis of some “problems” with the Bill, which was subsequently remedied, following which, an ordinance was promulgated.

New Delhi, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Friday sought a report from the CBI on photographs in which former Bihar Health Minister and RJD Lalu Prasad supremo’s son Tej Pratap Yadav is seen posing with the accused in the Rajdeo Ranjan murder case. The direction came on a petition filed by Asha Ranjan, whose husband and journalist Rajdeo Ranjan was murdered in Siwan district in Bihar. Mohammed Kaif is an accused in Ranjan’s murder and was absconding in the case when the photographs surfaced in the media. Kaif is alleged to be a sharp-shooter for Siwan strongman and jailed RJD leader Mohd. Shahabuddin. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra directed the CBI to find out the progress made by the local police in its investigation into the photos. The court ordered Ranjan’s counsel, advocate A.R.M. Pandey, to provide the CBI counsel and Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta with a transcript

NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday slammed fellow party leader Shashi Tharoor’s criticism of the country’s “so called valorous maharajas.” “I think he should study history. I am Jyotiraditya Scindia and I am proud of my past,” ANI quoted Scindia as saying. Tharoor had on Thursday accused India’s erstwhile kings+ of being “less concerned about their honour when the British were trampling all over it,” but today going after “a Mumbai filmmaker because their honour is at stake.” “In fact, every single one of these so called valorous maharajas, who today are after a Mumbai filmmaker because their honour is at stake,

New Delhi, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): The Centre on Friday supported the cause of having Kambala races in Karnataka, provided steps are taken to avoid cruelty to the participating bulls. “Unless cruelty is involved, Kambala should be permitted,” Attorney General K.K. Venugopal told a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. When asked why the Karnataka government is “so bothered” about Kambala that it has to promulgate an ordinance, Venugopal said “all State governments have to appease popular sentiments”. The AG invited the court to lay down objective conditions so that there is no unnecessary pain or suffering caused to the bulls. People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has moved the Supreme Court, said the President refused his assent to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill of 2017, reportedly in May. Art of life

hey say it is more often that life imitates art then when art imitates life. The latter appears to be the core of the film Padmavati , which is based on the story of Rani Padmini, who performed jauhar to evade capture from Alauddin Khilji and his army after they breeched the fort of Chittor. Actor Ranveer Singh plays the role of Alauddin Khilji while Shahid Kapoor plays the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh. A big question doing the rounds on social media is – whether Alauddin Khilji really saw the legendary beauty of Rani Padmini? On this the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) board at the entrance to ‘Padmini Palace’ in Chittorgarh carries this legend, “It is said that here Mahrawal Ratan Singh showed a glimpse of the legendary beauty of his wife Rani Padmini to Alauddin Khilji through a mirror. After which, Alauddin Khilji went to the extent of ravaging Chittaur in order to possess her.” Thus, according to ASI, Alauddin Khilji saw the beauty of Rani Padmini through a mirror and reportedly went to the extent of ravaging Chittaur in order to possess her. At present, the room, where Maharawal Ratan Singh is said to have showed Rani Padmini’s glimpse to Khilji, is sealed. Reportedly, Padmini stayed at ‘Jal Mahal’ when Khilji saw a glimpse of her. The story of Rani Padmini evokes exceptionally strong emotion among the people of Chittorgarh. This emotion has also seen the rise of certain elements that have resorted to violence and intimidation against any perceived negative comment on Rani Padmini In March this year, Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS) vandalised the mirrors. They reasoned that no mirrors existed in 1303. In Padmavati, Deepika Padukone plays the role of the Chittor queen, Shahid Kapoor features as Raja Ratan Singh while Ranveer Singh portrays Alauddin Khilji. The film is scheduled to be released on December 1. The Karni Sena has vandalised cinema halls which were to show trailer of Rani Padmini. The outfit has even threatened to launch a violent movement in several north Indian states if the film is not banned. The ire against the film was that it contained a scene about a dream sequence showing Padmini with Alaudin Khilji. The film makers have dismissed such speculations but unfortunately for the extreme elements, it is enough ammunition to demand a ban on the film. It does not need a scene to rouse communal sentiments; just the film about a Muslim King and a Hindu Queen is enough to cause communal fire. The BJP appears to be playing its own game of running with the hare and hunting with the hound on such matters. BJP governments in Rajasthan, UP and Madhya Pradesh have not arrested or charged the Karni Sena under relevant sections of the law. With the rise of BJP in north India, such so-called fringe elements have become brazen while the state governments appear to be doing precious little. In the Rani Padmini episode, even Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has not uttered a single word. Perhaps he thinks that it is prudent not to provoke the fringe elements in states where the Congress is seeking to regain power. The rise of the intolerant brigade puts India to shame and makes a mockery of the serious efforts of the government to attract foreign investors if such matters continue to wreak havoc on society.

DailyDevotion The Eternal Goal By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing…I will bless you… —Genesis 22:16-17 Abraham, at this point, has reached where he is in touch with the very nature of God. He now understands the reality of God. My goal is God Himself… At any cost, dear Lord, by any road. “At any cost…by any road” means submitting to God’s way of bringing us to the goal. There is no possibility of questioning God when He speaks, if He speaks to His own nature in me. Prompt obedience is the only result. When Jesus says, “Come,” I simply come; when He says, “Let go,” I let go; when He says, “Trust God in this matter,” I trust. This work of obedience is the evidence that the nature of God is in me. God’s revelation of Himself to me is influenced by my character, not by God’s character. ’Tis because I am ordinary, Thy ways so often look ordinary to me. It is through the discipline of obedience that I get to the place where Abraham was and I see who God is. God will never be real to me until I come face to face with Him in Jesus Christ. Then I will know and can boldly proclaim, “In all the world, my God, there is none but Thee, there is none but Thee.” The promises of God are of no value to us until, through obedience, we come to understand the nature of God. We may read some things in the Bible every day for a year and they may mean nothing to us. Then, because we have been obedient to God in some small detail, we suddenly see what God means and His nature is instantly opened up to us. “All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen…” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Our “Yes” must be born of obedience; when by obedience we ratify a promise of God by saying, “Amen,” or, “So be it.” That promise becomes ours.

Post-mortem

‘Nsdz is a threat to Nagaland’

I

n my opinion, if the Resolution of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly made on 24. 03. 2014 to set up Nagaland Special Development Zone (NSDZ) is to be implemented; it would be a threat to Nagaland. The question of NSDZ implementation had some relaxation for sometime after seeing that there were stiff opposition from the Hohos, civil societies and various quarters. However, as the general election is nearby, some politicians are bringing the issue to the front line again probably to gain the political mileage for their party with the support of vested interests. The NSDZ, if implemented would definitely promote huge blunt population integration in the shortest cut without land integration as bait for a large permanent vote bank for the corrupt and crafty politicians. However, it will surely poison and deprave the spirit of our heart-strong desire for integration of all contagious areas of the Nagas into a single political umbrella. So far there are no much details on NSDZ except the Assembly Resolution which is interpreted in different versions by various political party leaders. However, NSDZ in short is to allow permanent business establishment rights, residential rights and absolute title over immovable properties to anyone including the outsiders by means of transfer through transactions for the purposes of trade operations, to promote and facilitate investors, faster industrialisation and urbanisation of the foothill areas of the state including Medziphema territory. The NSDZ is the absolute opposite of what is going on in the state of Meghalaya. For example, the Work Audit Act of Meghalaya was passed by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. As such, today, their public infrastructure is almost perfect, neat and clean. Corruption is almost rooted out as all the development activities are subject to cross-checking by the Work Audit Authority of the Public. Their industrial culture is growing rapidly fast, corporal and business ethics is impressive as one can see.

W

ith the development and advancement of technology in this 21st century, especially in the field of information technology and its widespread availability and usage, particularly the use of internet has diversified; people have started using internet as a means of communicating their thoughts and ideas on various issues and problems and not merely as a tool to collect information. . The use of social media brought a common platform for all internet users and revolutionized the world to form a cyber society. The politicians and governments are using these mediums to reach out to masses and govern their subjects through e-governance, stars are using these as a medium to connect to their fans and well wishers Wannabes use these mediums to show the world what they do, citizens reach out to their governments, many successful businessmen use internet as an establishment, farmers use internet in various capabilities to increase their productivities and yield better product etc. There is definitely a new internet society which has come up where there is no distinction on any basis, internet has provided everybody a platform to convey their thoughts and creativity, get involved in discussions and debates, review a product, a movie, a song and even a person. Though this platform has provided us with many insightful, collateral collective constructive

No non-indigenous inhabitants of Meghalaya are allowed to work therein as manual physical labourers. They also can never buy land and whatever land that they bought long ago, can only be maintained as it was. No new development, not even a toilet or a single room can be added to their existing landed property. This is done because Meghalaya as a state plans to survive for thousands of years to come. As living space is the biggest problem of the day all over the world. Had we love our children we would be doing the same. Doing the right things for our survival is a divine call and duty Whereas, to implement this NSDZ, some corrupt politicians with all their might and zealots are hell-bent to modify the 1977 Government of Nagaland’s Notification prescribing criteria for the indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland as well as the Land and Revenue Regulation Act of 1978 and to lift the Inner Line Permit in the NSDZ. These aforesaid three are the utmost important pillars and foundations of our Nagaland state. The NLA’s resolution of this flagrant NSDZ if not revoked would be a fatal threat and curse to the gen next. The core issue is why this dangerous resolution capable of looting our future, our land, our mineral resources could be passed without opposition. The paradox is that we all say we love our people, our land and Nagaland shall be protected, but in reality, those just remain mere talk. All that we do is adore our own selves and strive for ways to gain selfishly and shamelessly. We vote only for cash bartering our birthright, integrity and soul as Esau, who was Edom. Or we vote for instant self- gratification with favours from the candidates. We never vote for our own good, our future or with principle. As a result, with the purchased people’s mandate, the corrupt politicians without the slightest political principles loot, plunder and exploit our future beyond all limits in broad day light. Continue to embezzle our state public fund in terms of thousands of crores rupees by awarding fictitious price escalations up to 900% or more on projects. Take huge cuts on almost all projects

as their commissions thereby giving licenses of corruption to their subordinates, bureaucrats and others. To cite a few, and this isn’t news any more. This is why we, ACAUT urgently need Lokayukta Nagaland to protect our survival. Esau of the Bible became the enemy of God and Israel because he rejected God’s blessing by his corrupt behaviour of bartering his birthright as the older son of Issac. “Esau, who is Edom” says Gen 25:30. Why is Edom considered as the enemy of God and Israel? The kingdom of Edom which stood on the south of Dead Sea was noted for its exceptionally long-standing bitter hostility with Israel. As such when Esau sold out the blessings of God for a single meal, he was instantly called and known as Edom. Beware of the curses given to Esau under Gen. 27:38 & 40 “Your dwelling will be away from the earth’s richness, away from the dew of Heaven above, you will live by the sword” Is our present lifestyle aforesaid too keeping us away from the earth’s richness and the dew of Heaven? Are we not living amongst the swords today? These are the reasons that ACAUT was born out of necessity, aiming to redeem our society. God has made His message loud and clear to each of us that Esau was rejected by Him for two reasons – firstly, he despised God’s blessings over his fleshly desires and secondly he failed to repent for his sin. The reward of the blessing or the curse is in our hands. “if my people… humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chr. 7:14. Lets pray, repent and “see that no one is sexually immoral or is Godless like Esau” (Heb. 12:16) so that our future will be a blessed one as per God’s plan, which is definitely not poverty, sickness, ignorance, fratricide, hatred, dishonesty, or impurities, for our God knew us even before we were born. The opinions of United Naga Democratic Party

NDP Nagaland is constrained to put forward a few pointers to the general public of Nagaland and to ponder over it. The respective members of parliament, both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are provided with special fund allocation but so far, we do not see any development brought by the said members, or is it that the central government’s promise of the package just a word of the mouth deal since 2003 till date? In the year 2003, the then Prime Minister Vajpayee announced that for accelerating the process of socio-economic development in Nagaland, an amount of around 1000 crores and more was earmarked. So, has the money been sanctioned? And if yes then, for what development have been done, it would be a reality if we can invite the precious PN and show him the development that he has helped bring to our state. Today, many cases of corruptions in many departments are highlighted in every form of media, but has any action been taken by the RTI and vigilance to back up the end result is questionable. The civil society needs to know what is the outcome of the case. Or are the cases dissolved with mutual understanding between the parties in question? During the 2003 elections, the candidates were provided with money by choppers and vehicles wherein, the said incidents were also published in the media, not only this but the national political parties also had a hand in providing financial assistance to the candidates, have been heard. UNDP feels that the financial disposals incurred during the elections are being recovered from the state development funds. Whenever the state budget is declared in Nagaland, it always shows a deficit amounting sky high. On the other hand it also shows that the state government has taken loans from national banks in interest. While government employees take service loan against their salary by deducting certain amounts for a period of certain years with interest but in spite of this the state budget

deficit seems to be increasing by heaps and in such a case, what do the general Naga public think? The schemes for our state development have been arranged like a bunch of banana uniformly, yet the Naga leaders like hungry monkeys seem to pluck their choice of the fruit and sell it to the public for their own gain. So, do you think such deed of a leader is right or do you want public government development? For every five years, the people elect a leader to lead them, not to mislead them. Therefore, it is upto the general public to understand what kind of person they are electing to represent them. A leader who is a money monger cannot be a true leader. It is obvious that whichever elected member is holding a certain portfolio works in cahoots with the heads of department and work hand in hand to rob the general public of the state’s money. The poor road conditions have brought our state in the country’s map besides lack of modern and up to date medical institutions especially for women. To cite an example, the department of agriculture is also another set-back in the state, while it being an agriculture state. Besides this the central government has been providing many extra packages to each of the various departments of the state but we only hear about it in the media. Is it because we public have been immunized to keep silent as always over such corruptions thus making our state a self styled government? Luckily, as of the present scenario, the word is that the state shall have its own independent government and if so, we just might find a solution to our problem by forming an interim body thereby bringing a genuine democratic government. But if it is to happen as per the Indian constitution and Election Commission guidelines, 2018 elections is in the hands of the general public as to if they want development or want to sink deeper. Praise the Lord and God Bless. N. Hotongse Sangtam, President United Naga Democratic Party, Nagaland

Cyber Crime outlooks and a sense of oneness to the people, it also has its share of disadvantages. One of the most hideous abuses of internet use comes in the form of people who commit crime through computer or internet which is called cyber crime. Many of us are frequent internet users; in fact, internet has become a lifeline especially the younger generation. As consumers, we are expected to know the implications of internet usage so that we can take full advantage of its use without entangling ourselves with the law or our fellow citizens. Cyber crime can be defined as “Offences that are committed against individuals or groups of individuals with a criminal motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause physical or mental harm, or loss, to the victim directly or indirectly, using modern telecommunication networks such as Internet (networks including but not limited to Chat rooms, emails, notice boards and groups) and mobile phones (Bluetooth/SMS/MMS)”. Cyber crime can be categorized into the following: a. Unauthorized access & Hacking: The act of unauthorized access without the permission of either the rightful owner or the person in charge of a computer, computer system or computer network such as Virus and Worm or Trojan Attack, Email spoofing, Spamming and email bombing etc.

b. Pornography: Act of showing pornography and or involved in shaping attitudes and encouraging behaviour that can harm individual users and their families. c. Forgery/Frauds: Act of counterfeiting currency notes, postage and revenue stamps, mark sheets etc. forged using sophisticated computers, printers and scanners including bank fraud such as using false or fraudulent claims to solicit investments or loans, carding, phishing and social engineering, targeting consumers and businesses. d. IPR Violations/ Identity theft: These include software piracy, copyright infringement, trademarks violations, theft of computer source code, patent violations, identity theft, extortion, and theft of classified information. e. Cyber Terrorism/ cyber warfare: Act of terrorism committed through the use of cyberspace or computer resources to attacks and posses military as well as civil installations and establishments, power plants, air traffic control, banks, rail traffic etc. f. Cyber Defamation/ Obscene /offensive contents: Act of infringement/ harming another person’s/ office’s/company’s reputation in front of a third party by various means of defamation through words (spoken or written), signs or visible representation on cyber space such as social media platform/ forum, social networking sites or groups, e-mails,

chat rooms, SMS/MMS or any other websites which can be accessed by anyone. This is also known as Cyber Smearing. All cyber crimes are planned and propagated intentionally except Cyber Defamation. The legal implications of cyber crimes are covered under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Cyber Crime investigation cells of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) deals with these cyber crimes in India. One of the social menace of internet and the most common violation of the law is the cyber defamation. Many a times we post or repost such contents in social media and networking sites casually, unaware of the legal implications of the contents or out of frustration and desperation. As law abiding citizens, we need to be very careful while using social networking sites because cyber defamation is a serious violation of the law as per Indian Penal Code, Section 499 and 500, punishable with imprisonment of two years or fine or both. There have been many instances where people have tarnished and ruined the reputation of others through their views or comments or allegations under the aegis of exposing corruption and freedom of speech and expression. The right to Freedom of Speech and Expression is a fundamental right in the Indian Constitution guaranteed under Article 19(1). As such, Freedom

of speech and expression is one of the important pillars of democracy and is indispensable to the unadulterated exchange of thoughts and ideas needed to regulate the democratic machinery in the country. In fact, these free thoughts lead to ideas that formulate public policy and progress as well as built political stability and check abuse of power and corruption by public officials and the likes. However, this mechanism should not be misused through false allegations and defamation because nothing in this world is absolute; hence freedom of speech and expression comes with certain limitations and restrictions in the form of laws of defa-

mation. In conclusion, we need to educate all internet users, particularly those who use social networking sites, about the legal implications of our actions to avoid unnecessary legal attraction. In this regard, we ought to ask ourselves the Socrates triple filter test questions before posting or reposting any information in the social media, which is a good way to distance oneself from any legal involvement: Is the information about truth? Is the information’s intent good? And is the information useful? If any of the answer is not positive, refrain is a better word. Visato Kiso, Quality Manager, NSCB Aviation, Kolkata

Mental health needs to be addressed

Sir,

When someone is going through depression, we cannot tell them to swallow it down like a glass of water. Only those that battle with depression will understand than there is more to it than meets the eye. When you suffer from a mental illness, it is a very difficult task to control and conquer. Even more so as it is often brushed aside and ignored. One problem with mental illness is that, in most cases, you can’t see it and because of this, many young Naga boys and girls resort to suicide. The Church also needs to play an active role in addressing this as religions organisations are the backbone of Naga society. If we do this and stop all the stigmatisation, not only do we save lives but we help create a healthier place for the future generations as well, a place where they are not left to feel alone. Wapang Lemtur, Naharbari, Dimapur Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

economic and institutional reforms. “While a number of important reforms remain at the design phase, Mo ody’s believes that those implemented to-date will advance the government’s objective of improving the business climate, enhancing productivity, stimulating foreign and domestic investment, and ultimately fostering strong and sustainable growth,” Moody’s said. The reform programme will thus complement the existing “shock-absorbance capacity” provided by India’s strong growth potential and improving global competitiveness, it added. Reforms like Goods and Services Tax (GST) will promote productivity by removing barriers to interstate trade.

EC verdict: Nitish wins battle for control of JD(U) NEW DELHI, NOV 17 (PTI): In a big win for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Election Commission Friday recognised the group led by him as the Janata Dal (United), rejecting the claim of the Sharad Yadav faction over the party’s name and election symbol. Kumar and Yadav parted ways after the former decided to join hands with the BJP in July, triggering a battle for the control of the party. Yadav claimed that by ending the alliance with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD and deserting the greater ‘grand alliance’, Kumar had gone against the party’s national executive’s decision to oppose the BJP. As the rift between the two widened, Yadav held a ‘national executive’ of the JD(U) here where Chhotubhai Amarsang Vasava was appointed as the acting president.

The ‘Baa3’ rating was the lowest investment grade-just a notch above ‘junk’ status. “The decision to upgrade the ratings is underpinned by Moody’s expectation that continued progress on economic and institutional reforms will, over time, enhance India’s high growth potential and its large and stable financing base for government debt, and will likely contribute to a gradual decline in the general government debt burden over the medium term,” Moody’s said in a statement.

Padmavati movie: Protests intensify Jaipur, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): Protests against the movie Padmavati intensified on Friday in several places across the country with hundreds taking to the streets in Rajasthan, Haryana, and even southern Tamil Nadu demanding a ban on the Bollywood film that they say has distorted facts and hurt their sentiments. Protesters blocked the entrance to the Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan’s Chittor, which is associated with the legendary Rajput queen Padmini, saying they will not allow the film based on her life to be released. The Rajput community and organisations such as the Karni Sena have alleged that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film depicts an “amorous relationship” between Padmavati – portrayed by actor Deepika Padukone – and Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji – played by Ranveer Singh. Makers of the film have denied the allegations on several occasions. The Sarv Samaj Sangathan and some other outfits have also said a song in the film, which shows Padukone dancing the traditional ghoomar, crossed “dramatic license”. “A dharna demanding a ban on Padmavati is con-

The court also confirmed a CBI Special Court’s 2010 ruling of two-year jail for three others in the case. In 1994, Natarajan imported a new Lexus car forging the papers to show that it made in 1993 and thus evaded a duty of over 1.6 crore. The CBI had registered a case against Natarajan, his nephew V. With Balakrishnan on the run, the case was proceeded against the remaining four who were convicted by the CBI court.

Life’s cruel twist on slain cattle trader

Bharatpur, Nov 17 (AGENCIES): As Umar Mohammed’s body was wheeled in for autopsy, his distraught and emaciated wife walked into the labour room for their ninth child. The dead father and the newborn reached home the same day. The 38-year-old Khursheeda gave birth to a boy on Wednesday afternoon at a community health centre (CHC) in Pahadi, about 10km from their village — Ghatmika in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur. A thatched room without doors and a plot of open space, where the family keeps its buffalo and three goats, constitutes their home. Umar’s wife lies in a straw shack covered with a tarpaulin. The reddish newborn lies beside her. The child wails for comfort, but his voice fails to pierce the gloom surrounding the village dotted with bare brick houses, cattle and chicken crisscrossing rustic roads, and a

woody smoke in the air. His 42-year-old father was shot dead by assailants in Alwar in early on November 10 when he was transporting cows to his village. Um a r ’s bo dy wa s found on railway tracks in Alwar’s Ramgarh on Friday evening and sent to Jaipur by police ahead of the chief minister’s visit to the area. The autopsy was delayed till Wednesday because of objections from the family. Hundreds of people gathered in Ghatmika, mostly from villages in the Muslim-dominated Mewat region, on Thursday. Bearded men, turbans over weather-hardened faces, and clad in mud-stained white. T h e wo m e n wo r e chadors around their faces and clenched with teeth to keep them in place. As the baby slept in the shack, the imam began his sermon at Umar’s funeral.

Before the burial, a public meeting was held to decide whether to bury the body or stage an indefinite protest at the collectorate.

DIMAPUR, NOV 17 (NPN): Reacting to the statement issued by BJP Kohima district president, Khrielie Üsou with regard to removal of Dr. Khriezovolie Kesiyie and Seyiekhrielie Nagi on ground of anti-party activities, resigned general secretary (Org), Rushulo Khing stated that it was “nothing short of a wide and blatant lie.” Khing pointed out that Khrielie Üsou was a former Congressman who had recently joined the BJP party and was “only a novice in the party and does not have

tinuing for the last eight days at Padan Pole. The Chittorgarh Fort will be closed for tourists today (Friday),” member of Sarv Samaj Sangathan and president of Jauhar Samriti Sansthan Ummed Singh said. However, superintendent of police of Chittorgarh Prashant Kumar Khamesra said the fort, a world heritage site, is not officially closed. New agency ANI reported that several shots were fired during the protests against the film outside Chittorgarh fort. The Hindustan Times could not verify the report. In March, the Chittorgarh Fort was vandalised by a group of men who broke the mirrors installed at the so-called Padmini Palace. Rajasthan Tourism

Development Corporation (RTDC) managing director Pradeep Kumar Borad has ruled out any change in the operations of the luxury train — Palace on Wheels — and said it would run through the circuit and will go to Chittorgarh. Borad, when asked whether the tourists would be taken to Chittorgarh Fort, said the local administration be able to comment on it better. Members of the Rajput Karni Sena in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore also demanded the film be banned. In Haryana’s Hisar, Karni Sena staged a motorcycle march from the IG chowk to DC office and burnt the effigy of Bhansali. More than 50 members of the Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena were led by its state president Bhawani Singh.

Northeast region talks about problems but do not design solutions and this solution can be created by us when we make entrepreneurship part of our career,” exhorted Riddhinil. Axis bank officials of Dimapur also shared the same sentiment that the northeast region lacks in private enterprise especially local entrepreneurs. Addressing the issue of shortage of local entrepreneurs, the bank officials maintained that the best way an individual can contribute to the society is by promoting local produce and expanding their products beyond their state.

According to Ericsson’s estimates, 5G technology -- that will support faster data access -- will enable a USD 27.3 billion revenue potential for Indian telecom operators by 2026. “The largest opportunity will be seen in sectors like manufacturing, energy and utilities followed by public safety and health sectors,” a report by Ericsson said. It added that this will be over and above the revenue generated from traditional services, which is expected to grow up to USD 63 billion by 2026.

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 7 (NPN): The Two-day Naga Entrepreneurs Conclave (NEC), a platform for the local entrepreneurs to exhibit “only local” products and exchange their innovative ideas got underway at Urban Haat here on Friday. The event is supported by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and Business Association of Nagas’ (BAN) with the motto “support local.” The conclave aims to enhance traditional marketing style by bringing together all the existing local owned businesses and enterprises. Apart from the con-

clave, various stalls have been set up where upcoming Naga entrepreneurs would be selling their indigenous and innovative products during the two-day event. On the first day, a dog show was also organized. The event will continue till Saturday. NE8X CEO Roy Riddhinil from Guwahati in an interaction session with students’ and local entrepreneurs said that there are very few entrepreneurs in northeast region and pointed out ‘though government jobs give a sense of security, it is disruptive as it does not leave room for expansion of ideas’. “For entrepreneurship there is no physical liability

Ericsson today showcased the first live 5G endto-end demonstration here using its 5G test bed and 5G NR Radio. This, Ericsson claimed, has an “extremely high throughput and ultra-low latency”. ket share of both Air India and SpiceJet stood at 13.1 per cent, each. IndiGo also clocked the best on time performance (OTP) from four metro airports with 83.9 per cent of its flights arriving and departing as per scheduled time followed by SpiceJet at 83.3 per cent. The Naresh Goyalowned Jet continued to fare poorly in operating its flights on time as almost one-third of its aircraft failing to takeoff or land on time during the month. The OTP of airlines is computed for four metro airports--Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Reacting to the numbers, leading travel portal Yatra.com said the passenger traffic has remained strong as a result of increased passenger load in the peak festive season. “Continuous capacity expansion by airlines on popular routes, addition of new sectors and slightly lower fares added to the growth momentum. private airline. GoAir and AirAsia India, the two other budget carriers, flew 9.24 lakh and 4.52 lakh passengers, respectively, during the month, as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data. Vistara, the third fullservice carrier after Air India and Jet Airways, ferried 3.70 lakh in the month. During the month, SpiceJet saw its planes flying with over 90 per cent seat occupancy for the 31st consecutive time at 93.7 per cent. As against this, Air India flew with almost a quarter of seats empty with a PLF of just 76.6 per cent in October. “This is the 31st monthin-a-row that SpiceJet has flown with load factors in excess of 90 per cent,” a SpiceJet said in a statement. With maximum number of domestic passengers in its kitty, IndiGo also increased its market share by nearly a percentage points to 39.5 per cent, up from 38.2 per cent in the previous month, followed by Jet Airways with 15.88 per cent, according to the data. Interestingly, the mar-

ument can be sought only from those eligible for it under Aadhaar Act, and that most NRIs/PIOs/ OCIs may not be eligible for its enrolment. The Aadhaar-issuing body said several representations had been received about problems faced by Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Person of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) where Aadhaar was being demanded with regard to various services and benefits. It said that some Departments and implementing agencies were asking NRIs/OCIs/PIOs to submit or link their Aadhaar for availing services and benefits, despite the fact that they were not entitled for the 12-digit biometric identifier.

Fo r t h e r e p o r t i n g month, the carriers flew as much as 10.45 million passengers. The combined passenger traffic of all airlines was 8.67 million in October 2016, according to the data released by the regulator DGCA today. During the month, all major airlines barring the disinvestment-bound national carrier Air India logged a healthy passenger load factor at above 80 per cent owing to the onset of festive season, as per the DGCA passenger data for October. The PLF is a measure of how full the plane flies. Budget carrier IndiGo flew the most number of passengers at 41.33 lakh, while the second largest player Jet Airways was at a distant second with 15.88 lakh passengers. However, Air India unseated budget carrier SpiceJet for the third spot with 13.66 lakh passengers against 13.64 lakh flown by the Ajay Singh-promoted

were in the town have fled towards the Syrian border.” The JOC said appeals had been made for several days to the town’s Sunni Arab residents to listen to radio broadcasts for instructions on what to do when the army entered. Rawa was bypassed in an offensive by the Iraqi army that resulted in the recapture of the strategically important border town of Al-Qaim earlier this month. The stretch of Euphrates valley abutting the border with Syria has long been a bastion of Sunni Arab insurgency, first against USled troops after the invasion of 2003 and then against the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. The porous frontier became a magnet for foreign fighters entering Iraq from Syria, which Baghdad accused of turning a blind eye, and a key smuggling route for arms and illicit goods. US-led troops carried out repeated operations with code names like Matador and Steel Curtain in 2005 to flush out Al- Qaeda jihadists. The region swiftly fell to IS when its fighters swept through the Sunni Arab heartland north and west of Baghdad in 2014

before proclaiming its “caliphate”. The jihadists once controlled a territory the size of Britain but they have successively lost all their key strongholds, including Raqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq. Over the border in Syria, IS still holds around 25 percent of the countryside of Deir Ezzor province but are under attack not only by government forces but also by US- backed Kurdish-led fighters. In the border town of Albu Kamal, the Syrian army was battling IS fighters who mounted a surprise counterattack last week, pushing out government forces who had retaken it last month. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the war, said the new army offensive had successfully penetrated the town, with troops backed by Russian air strikes advancing from the west, east and south. “More than 7.5 million people have now been liberated” from IS, Washington’s envoy to the coalition, Brett McGurk, said late Wednesday, adding that the group’s finances are now “at their lowest levels to date”.

Bomb plot foiled ahead of ASEAN summit UN urges Myanmar to give citizenship to Rohingyas of targets, including a mall and a park in the capital, police said. However, police added they had asked prosecutors to file charges against the three for having unlicensed handguns, not in relation to a bomb plot. Philippine police chief Ronald Dela Rosa told reporters officers were checking whether the suspects were linked to previous attacks. The alleged militants -- two 19-year-olds and a 24-year- old -- were living in a northern Manila slum, largely populated by Muslim migrants. Police said the men came from the remote island of Basilan, an Abu Sayyaf stronghold around 900 kilometres (560 miles) south of the capital.

Saudi Arabia’s UN ambassador, Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, speaking on behalf of the OIC, said “another inhumane scene” of religious hatred is unfolding in Myanmar, forcing nearly 620,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh. He said the OIC is deeply concerned at escalating violence against the Rohingya, who have been called “insects” and “roaches” in Myanmar. The resolution said there has been a “disproportionate and sustained

The resolution “undermines the sovereignty of a nation and is tantamount to insulting its people.” By contrast, Bangladesh’s UN ambassador, Masud Bin Momen, called the Rohingya “the most persecuted people on Earth” and stressed the importance of their survival and basic human rights.

Paris accord. While one group of American officials led by White House adviser George David Banks raised eyebrows by hosting a procoal event during the talks, a second group consisting of seasoned U.S. negotiators quietly got on with the painstaking job of refining the international climate rulebook, said Elliot Diringer, a veteran of such UN meetings. “It’s a smaller team but a strong team,” said Diringer, who is the executive vice president of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, a Washington think tank. “From all accounts they have been playing a constructive role in the room advancing largely the same positions as before.” Environmental groups voiced disappointment at German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s failure to announce a deadline for her country to stop using coal, a major source of carbon emissions, even as other nations such as Canada and Britain committed to a phase-out. Leadership hopes are now being pinned on President Emmanuel Macron of France, who is hosting a climate summit in Paris next month to mark the second anniversary of the landmark accord. Further low-level talks will take place over the next year in order to present leaders with final drafts for approval at the next climate meeting in Katowice, Poland, next year.

Manila, Nov 17 (AFP): An Islamist plot to bomb a Manila shopping mall as US President Donald Trump and other world leaders arrived in the city for a summit has been foiled, Philippine police said Friday. Three alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf militant group were arrested on November 10, authorities said, a day before leaders began descending on the capital for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and other meetings. “A terror attack could have happened if not for that interdiction,” the police said in a statement, adding that pistols and grenades were seized from the suspects. Climate talks wrap up with progress on Paris rulebook Bonn (Germany), Nov 17 (Agencies): Global talks on curbing climate change wrapped up Friday, with delegates and observers claiming progress on several key details of the 2015 Paris accord. The two-week negotiations focused on a range of issues including transparency, financial assistance for poor nations and how to keep raising countries’ targets for cutting carbon emissions. “We are making good progress on the Paris agreement work program, and we are on track to complete that work by the deadline,” Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama told diplomats hours before the meeting in Bonn, Germany, was due to conclude. Bainimarama, who presided over the talks, faced the challenging task of reconciling the often conflicting positions of rich and poor countries, especially when it comes to what each side needs to do to curb climate change. Signatories of the Paris agreement want to keep global warming significantly below 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. That goal won’t be achieved unless countries make further efforts to sharply reduce carbon emissions caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels. Obser vers say the US delegation played a largely constructive role during the talks, despite the Trump administration’s threat to pull out of the

Bag h da d, N ov 1 7 (AFP): The Iraqi army retook the last town in the country still held by the Islamic State group Friday as the jihadists’ self-proclaimed “caliphate” faced collapse on both sides of the border with Syria. The lightning recapture of the small Euphrates valley town of Rawa in an offensive launched at dawn came as the jihadists were also under attack for a second day in the last town they still hold in Syria, Albu Kamal just over the border. The Islamic State group (IS) has lost 95 percent of the cross-border “caliphate” it declared in Iraq and Syria in 2014, the US-led coalition fighting it said on Wednesday. Its losses include all of its major bastions, virtually confining it to pockets of countryside. Government troops and paramilitary units “liberated the whole of Rawa and raised the Iraqi flag on all of its official buildings,” General Abdelamir Yarallah of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement. An army general contacted by AFP at the front had predicted that the battle would be swift as “the majority of IS fighters who

Mugabe. Although the army is obviously calling the shots in Zimbabwe, in public they still refer to Robert Mugabe as “his excellency, the president” and even “commander-in-chief ”. This is why he has been allowed to attend the graduation ceremony. This is partly to keep up the pretence that they have not staged a coup but they also have a genuine, deeply felt respect for him going back more than 40 years. All of Zimbabwe’s security chiefs have worked with Mr Mugabe since they fought together in the 1970s war of independence - and the bonds forged in that struggle are difficult to break. In many ways, Zimbabwe’s military remains the armed wing of Zanu-PF, as it was when they were all rebels fighting whiteminority rule in the then Rhodesia. Furthermore, in Zimbabwean culture, the elderly are treated with respect and no-one wants to be seen to be treating a 93-year-old in an undignified manner, especially a man even opposition figures refer to as the “father of the nation”.

He attended a graduation ceremony in the capital, Harare. Mr Mugabe had been under house arrest for days. The army made its move after a power struggle over his successor. The military said on Friday it was “engaging” with Mr Mugabe and would advise the public on the outcome of talks “as soon as possible”. Mr Mugabe’s attendance at the graduation is an annual tradition but few expected to see him there, the BBC’s Andrew Harding reports from Zimbabwe. ctor Sylvester Stallone has denied reports that he and a bodyguard sexually assaulted a 16-year-old fan in Las Vegas in the 1980s. The Mail Online has published what it says is a police report dating from 1986, which detailed the allegations. The young woman did not press charges, the report said, because she was “humiliated and ashamed”, as well as being “scared”. No action was taken. T h e Ro c k y s t a r ’s spokeswoman said the story was “categorically false”. Michelle Bega described the allegation as

“ridiculous”, adding: “No one was ever aware of this story until it was published today, including Stallone. “At no time was Stallone ever contacted by any authorities or anyone else regarding this matter.” The alleged victim said she became intimidated and frightened when the star’s bodyguard became involved in the incident in a hotel room, according to the 12-page police report. The report says the girl alleged they met in July 1986 in what was then the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel when she got an autograph from Stallone, then 40. She claimed a bodyguard gave her keys to a hotel room, where she later had sex with both men. The officer wrote: “She said that after she got dressed, Stallone made the comment to her that they were both married men and that she could not tell anybody about the incident and if she did, that they would have to beat her head in.” (BBC)

Sakshi finished on the top of the podium after posting a dominating 10-0 victory over Pooja Tomar of Haryana in the final of women’s 62kg, while Geeta clinched the yellow metal with a win against Ravita in the final of 59kg category. All eyes were on Sushil today and India’s greatest individual Olympian hardly had to break sweat as India international Parveen Rana decided to concede his bout against the 34year-old in the gold-medal round, claiming injury. It was Sachin Dahiya who gave him a walkover in the semifinals, enabling Sushil’s smooth passage to the gold-medal round, while Praveen, too, handed his fancied opponent a walkover in the quarterfinals.

Ponting may caoch Delhi Daredevils M u m ba i , N ov 1 7 (Agencies): Former Australian captain and Mumbai Indians coach Ricky Ponting, who parted ways with Indian Premier League(IPL) in 2016 after his contract expired, is rumoured to return to the IPL as the new coach for Delhi Daredevils. the playoffs in previous five editions. The three-time World Cup-winner was instrumental in not only shaping the 2015-16 Mumbai Indians squad but also for unearthing and nurturing talents like Jasprit Bumrah

and Hardik Pandya who are now regulars in the Indian cricket team. He also played an important part in supporting and marshalling players like Jos Buttler and Krunal Pandya to get the best out of them. However, amidst rising speculations about Ponting’s appointment, the Daredevils CEO Hemant Dua reportedly said, “We’re in talks with several people.” Ponting briefly joined the Australian coaching staff for the Sri Lanka series in January this year, and has proved his coaching credentials with his earlier stint with Mumbai Indians.

and will give us an upper hand when we fight our opponents in front of our home crowd,” she said. “Personally, I will feel no pressure facing anyone as I believe in my capabilities and will look to punch my way through to the finals of the tournament,” she added. The squad has been practicing here along with the other international teams, who have also arrived to adjust to the conditions. All pugilists fresh from their medal-winning exploits in various tournaments from all around the world will face a new challenge and will be considering themselves lucky as they fight in front of a vociferous home crowd cheering them on.

ATK hold Kerala Blasters 0-0 in ISL opener

a loose 4-2-3-1 formation. Iain Hume, Courage Pekuson and CK Vineeth joined them in attack as Milan Singh shielded the defence which featured Sandesh Jhingan and Nemanja LakicPesic sandwiched between

full-backs Rino Anto and Lalruatthara. For defending champions ATK, Finnish striker Njazi Kuqi started upfront with Hitesh Sharma in behind him in a more tight-knit 4-2-3-1 compared to their opponents. Conor Thomas and Eugeneson Lyngdoh were paired together in midfield with Debjit Majumder in goal. Kerala Blasters started the game on the front foot. Milan Singh’s shot from outside the box early in the game, after the midfielder ran forward from midfield, had the crowd on their feet but the ball flew wide of the sidebar. ATK dominated the possession stats in the early minutes of the game and almost made use of it when Hitesh Sharma forced Paul

stump took a thin edge off Rahane’s bat to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella as he tried to aimlessly drive through covers. At 30/4, the hosts were in a spot with Pujara finding himself alone in the middle, tasked to bail the team out. The in-form Saurashtra man played two exquisite off drives to Shanaka before taking on the same bowler a few overs later for another four. Pujara looked supreme on the off side, hitting Shanaka and Lahiru Gamage for two more boundaries past mid-off area. He was equally comfortable on the backfoot, punching a short and wide Karu. While bowling allrounder Ashwin struggled to settle in, taking a knock on his hand in the 25th over off Lahiru Gamage’s bowling before ending his ordeal in the next over. Gamage remained wicketless with figures of 11.5-3-24-0. Trying to drive a length Shanaka delivery, the righthander, returning to international cricket after three months, gave an easy catch to Dimuth Karunaratne at backward point. Later, Wriddhiman Saha, who also looked uncomfortable with the extra bounce on the wicket, went into the break unbeaten on 6 from 22 balls. Brief Scores: India 74/5 (Cheteshwar Pujara 47; Suranga Lakmal 3/5, Dasun Shanaka 2/23) vs Sri Lanka

The match between ATK and Kerala Blasters at JLN Stadium, Kochi on Friday.

Kochi, Nov 17 (Agencies): Defending champions ATK held Kerala Blasters to a goalless draw in the opening game of the fourth season of Indian Super League (ISL) at the JLN Stadium, Kochi on Friday.

The game was largely contested in midfield, as both sides struggled to convert their chances in front of goal. Star signing Dimitar Berbatov started upfront for Kerala as the lone striker in

Indian batsmen C Pujara and W Saha cross each other as they complete a run during the second day of 1st Test match against Sri lanka at Eden Garden in Kolkata. (PTI)

Ko l k ata , N ov 1 7 (IANS): Waging a lonely battle, Chesteshwar Pujara was three short of his 16th half century as India were reduced to 74/5 when early lunch was called due to rain and more downpour axed Day Two of the first Test at the Eden Gardens here on Friday. Only 105 minutes of play was possible on the second day in the morning session before the skies opened up. Lunch had to be called early after rain interrupted play half hour before the break. Pujara (47 off 102; 4x9) held fort at one end beginning the day on eight runs. The other overnight bats-

man, Ajinkya Rahane (4 off 21; 1x4), failed to get going and eventually fell to Dasun Shanaka (2/23) playing a poor shot as 21 overs were bowled in the first session. Ashwin (4 off 21) was also guilty of a naive drive as India failed to recover from their overnight score of 17/3. Suranga Lakmal conceded his first runs after 46 deliveries off the bat of Rahane, who three overs later fell prey to Shanaka. Lakmal still had great figures to show for, leaking just five runs in 11 overs and bowling nine maidens and taking three wickets. On day two, a tempted delivery outside the off-

Rachubka into a good low save inside the box. Courage Pekuson’s energy in the attacking third was on show in the 34th minute as he dribbled out of defence and played a well-timed give-and-go with Iain Hume before weaving through the ATK defence, whose resorted to fouling the Ghanian to bring the dangerous attack to an end. Kerala Blasters were lethargic with the ball and unsure without it. The movement and play of both teams in the attacking third left a lot to be desired as they went down the tunnel at the half-time whistle. Rene Meulensteen altered the formation in the second half as the home side sought control of the game. Mark Sifneos replaced Iain

Hume in attack and the 20-year-old former Walwijk striker slotted in as the frontman, pushing Dimitar Berbatov deeper. Teddy Sheringham reacted to the change by replacing the ineffective Njazi Kuqi with Indian striker Robin Singh. The changes seemed to open the game up and ATK, who looked better with the ball at their feet, were unlucky not to score in the 70th minute. Jose ‘Zequinha’ Branco cut in from the left before curling a delicious shot that hit the far post and went out of play. Dimitar Berbatov, who struggled to make his mark in his ISL debut, had his flick at goal saved by Debjit Majumder as the sides shared spoils at the full-time whistle.

Sindhu suffers shock defeat in China Open

P V Sindhu

FUZHOU, Nov 17 (PTI): P V Sindhu’s title defence lay in tatters after suffering a shock straight-game loss to hitherto unknown Chinese Gao Fangjie in the quarterfinals of the China Super Series Premier here today. Sindhu seemed completely off-colour during her 38-minute duel with the 19-year-old Fangjie, who upstaged her fancied World No. 2 rival 21-11 21-10 in a lop-sided contest. Sindhu’s loss drew curtains on India’s campaign at the China Open, following the ouster of Saina Nehwal and H S Prannoy in the pre-quarterfinals yesterday.

The 22-year-old from Hyderabad, who has been playing continuously for the last three weeks, participating in the Denmark Open, French Open and the National Championship in Nagpur, found the going tough today. She seemed exhausted and struggled to anticipate her opponent’s moves even as Fangjie kept varying the length of the shots and engaged in long rallies to dominate the proceedings. Sindhu is scheduled to play at the Hong Kong Open next week. She had reached the finals in the last edition and has a lot of points to defend.
