NEW DELHI, NOV 13 (IANS): The Supreme Court will hear on November 19 a plea by Zakia Jafri challenging the Gujarat High court order upholding the clean chit to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others for the alleged larger conspiracy in the 2002 post-Godhra riots. Zakia Ahsan Jafri is the widow of late Congress leader Ahsan Jafri who was killed in mob violence on Gulberg Housing Society during 2002 Gujarat riots. Jafri was former member of parliament. The bench of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice Deepak Gupta said they would hear the plea by Zakia Jafri on Monday after it came up for hearing today. Jafri has challenged the October 5, 2017 order of Gujarat High Court upholding the Magistrate court order rejecting Jafri’s protest petition challenging the SIT report giving clean chit to top political leaders and state functionaries for the alleged larger conspiracy. The SIT was set up by the top court, and it had (Cont’d on p-7) come to the conclusion that
no case was made out and the same was accepted by the Magistrate and the finding was “erroneously” reiterated by the High Court, says the petition by Jafri. The petition further says that the High Court refused to interfere with the Magistrate court order “despite large amount of documentation and contemporaneous evidence that existed which made out a triable case against all the accused.” The petition by Jafri says she in her case had levelled allegations against various bureaucrats, police officers and political leaders for alleged “conspiracy, abetment and hate speech” culminating in 2002 violence. Petitioner Jafri referred to the burning of the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002 resulting in the death of 59 kar sevaks at Godhra railway station. She said this was “presumed to be communal attack against the Hindus and this culminated into a reprisal against the Muslim community leading to orchestrated violence and targeted killings.”

ment for making agriculture sustainable. Towards this end, he claimed that the government was focusing on organic farming, which was one of the State’s major strengths and could help farmers move up the value chain. He further mentioned that adoption of cash crops like coffee was also helping improve agricultural income and that integrating allied activities with farming like piggery, fishery and poultry also had the potential of augmenting farm incomes, adding adoption of these strategies required building capacities at all levels. Observing that hunger was not a challenge in Nagaland, the chief minister pointed opined that helping increase rural incomes would reduce dependency on government jobs and the resultant rural-to-urban migration. He stressed creating jobs in smaller towns to reduce overcrowding in towns like Kohima and Dimapur, which were expanding haphazardly and had become concrete jungles with unmanageable traffic and shortage of water and other basic amenities.

plan massive strike in Jan
C H E N NA I , N OV 1 3 (AGENCIES): Four lakh defence employees working with 41 ordnance factories, naval docks, army and air force workshops and other productions units that form the backbone of the armed forces’ are readying themselves for a massive three-day protest in January between 23 and 25 next year. And, as a token gesture, they boycotted lunch on Tuesday, a TOI report stated. Predominantly, their major issue is with the Centre’s policies pushing privatisation of defence production, which they argue is detrimental for the country’s defence forces. “Today we just gave up lunch, but the government has been proactive and if the same continues we are planning a massive protest in January that will see all naval docks stop work, and the situation
will be the same at the army and air force workshops for three days,” All India Defence Employees’ Federation (AIDEF) general secretary C Srikumar told TOI. The disruption in work, he says is always the last resort of the employees who understand how critical their contribution is to the armed forces. The Centre, as part of its policy has been progressively enhancing opportunities for the private sector. Among policy decisions that have impacted the public sector in defence are: Declaring more than 200 defence items as non-core that allows defence forces to procure them directly from the market; mandating PSUs and ordnance factories to give out at least 25% of their work order to private firms and so on.
