Plight of organic farmers

Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 2 (NPN): In October this year, the tiny Himalayan State of Sikkim was declared as India’s first organic State by United Nations for its farming policies that benefitted over 66,000 farmers. According to World Future Council, tourism in the State had also increased by 50% between 2014 and 2017. Like Sikkim, Nagaland is also predominantly hilly and blessed with favourable conditions, but the picture is a stark contrast as local farmers continue to fend for themselves. Though there is a thin silver lining with cooperative societies like Green Shelves Agri Produce and Marketing Cooperative Society trying to ameliorate the condition of local farmers, there is still a lot left desired on various fronts. Talking to Nagaland Post after the brief inauguration of a farmers’ store by Green Shelves Agri Produce and Marketing Cooperative Society at Lhomithi village on Monday, society chairman Bumo Chang underlined the following challenges that needed to be addressed for local farmers

Fuel prices dip further NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (AGENCIES): On the back of falling crude oil prices, state-run oil marketing companies slashed the prices of petrol and diesel by 17 paise and 15 paise, respectively. This is the fourth straight week when fuel prices have been cut. A litre of petrol now costs Rs 77.56 in Delhi, Rs 83.07 in Mumbai, Rs 80.56 in Chennai, Rs 78.18 in Bengaluru and Rs 79.49 in Kolkata. In Dimapur, a litre of petrol was Rs. 73.43 and diesel was Rs. 67.91 on Monday while in the state capital Kohima, petrol price was Rs. 74.25 per litre and diesel was Rs. 68.53 per litre.

to gain a better a foothold in the market. Lack of transport: One aspect that has been a major deterrent is lack of proper transport facilities. Very little has been done to enable local organic farmers from far-flung areas to transport their agricultural produce. To address this, Bumo suggested that the government could consider transporting around 300 kg of their produce via NST buses every day. He added that his cooperative society was also contemplating to initiate transportation to help farmers. Inadequate storage facilities: As organic produce

generally last for about two to three days, lack of cold storage facilities resulted in tonnes of agricultural produce getting decomposed, thereby leading to huge losses for the farmers. Cold storage was imperative for storing in case produces were not sold out on a given day, he stressed. Pathetic roads: Citing Peren as an example, Bumo said a distance of around 70 km should ideally take about one-and-a-half to two hours to cover, but bad roads had made transportation cumbersome, time-consuming and very expensive for farmers. He said the distance

should not take five to seven hours like now. No sufficient patronage from locals: Calling for more patronage to local farmers, Bumo quipped “We should not blame the government but ourselves.” He urged locals to support the farmers by “eating local, buying local and supporting local.” Earlier in the day, the farmers’ market housed at a building provided by MARCOFED was inaugurated by Nagaland State Co-operative Marketing & Consumers Federation Ltd (MARCOFED) chairman Dr M Chuba Ao.

Ready to resume CF, says Khangoled NSCN (K) D I M A P U R , N OV 1 2 (NPN): Khango Konyakled NSCN (K) Monday said that the group was ready to resume the cease-fire agreement with the Government of India (GoI). In a press note, NSCN (K) MIP claimed that GoI had responded positively through NGBF and NMA that it was more than happy to have NSCN (K) return to the peace process as it was the outfit which had unilaterally walked out of the ceasefire signed by both the parties in 2001. In response to the appeal of GoI, the state government and Naga people, MIP said NSCN (K) was prepared to resume the abrogated ceasefire and pursue the Naga political issue with GoI. However, MIP warned that the bid to undermine its legitimacy by giving recognition to the group that was signatory to Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) in Myanmar could be very dangerous and damaging to the Naga political issue. NEW DELHI, NOV 12 (PTI): Around 70 per cent voter turnout was registered in the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls, the Election Commission said Monday. The turnout is likely to go up as the final figures are yet to be received, Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said. In the corresponding constituencies, a turnout of 75.06 per cent was recorded in the 2013 elections, he said. “In 10 of the 18 constituencies which went for polls today (Monday), elections were held up to 3 pm. In the rest, it was up to 5 pm ... since there were queues in several polling stations, the exact number of votes polled will be known later ... it may match or surpass the 2013 figures,” Sinha told a press conference. In the first phase, voting was held in 18 of the 90 Assembly seats in Chhattisgarh. 190 candidates are

in the fray and as many as 4,336 polling booths have been set up and 19,079 polling personnel deployed there. Till 5.30 pm, the overall voter turnout was 58.55 per cent, the EC said. on December 11. This time, the coalition between Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), former chief minister Ajit Jogi’s JCC(J) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) has added another dimension to the electoral politics of Chhattisgarh which is generally a two-way fight between the BJP and Congress. Meanwhile, polling day also saw an encounter between security personnel and Naxals in Bijapur and a bombing in Dantewada. Five CoBRA personnel were injured in two separate encounters with ultras in Pamed police station area of Bijapur district, police said. An improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated early Monday morning in Katekalyan area of Dantewada district by Naxals, but no harm was reported, poll officials in Raipur said.

Fake news spreading due to ‘rising tide of nationalism’: Report LONDON, NOV 12 (PTI): People in India share fake news stories with nationalistic messages for “nation building” purposes without any attempt at fact-checking a report, according to a BBC research released on Monday. The findings come from extensive research in India, Kenya, and Nigeria into the way ordinary citizens engage with and spread fake news, the British public broadcaster said. According to the report, there is also an overlap of fake news sources on Twitter and support networks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The report, analysing the spread of fake news from the perspective of ordinary citizens, suggests an “overlap between fake news and pro-Modi political activity” in India. The BBC said its first published study, providing an in-depth understanding of how fake news and disinformation are spreading within encrypted

chat apps, reveals that emotion is trumping reason when it comes to sharing news. “Whilst most discussion in the media has focused on ‘fake news’ in the West, this piece of research gives strong evidence that a serious set of problems are emerging in the rest of the world where the idea of nation-building is trumping the truth when it comes to sharing stories on social media,” said Jamie Angus, Director, BBC World Service Group. As part of the extensive research using big data and analytics, the BBC found that in Indian Twitter networks, known right wing sources of fake news seemed more closely aligned than left wing sources. “This allows right leaning fake news to spread faster and wider than left leaning fake news,” notes the extensive research carried out by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the three countries.

The research forms part of the BBC Beyond Fake News project, a new international anti-disinformation initiative of programmes and discussions, which launches this week. The research revealed that fake news was being unwittingly spread by people across India, Kenya, and Nigeria as they forward messages in the hope that someone else will check the truth of the story for them. “In India people are reluctant to share messages which they think might incite violence, but feel duty bound to share nationalistic messages,” the research notes. “Fake news stories about India’s progress, Hindu power and revival of lost Hindu glory are being shared widely without any attempt at factchecking. In sharing these messages, people feel like they are nation building,” it adds. “At the heart of this research is the question of why ordinary people are sharing

fake news, even while they claim to be worried about the way fake stories spread. “This report combines in-depth qualitative and ethnographic techniques with digital network analysis and big data techniques to explore the fake news phenomenon in India, Kenya, and Nigeria from multiple angles,” said Santanu Chakrabarti, Head of Audience Research, BBC World Service. Chakrabar ti said the project was one of the first in these countries to properly understand fake news as a technologically driven social phenomenon. As part of a generational analysis, it reveals that young people are identifying along nationalistic lines, and this is driving their sharing behaviour as much as it is the older generation. The research suggests that a significant amount of fake stories being shared are not written articles, but images

and memes. The report explains in depth how the nature of social media platforms, combined with the challenge people face in coping with the amount of information online, leads to the spread of fake news being carried through visual media. The report comes on the same day when social media giants like Facebook, Google and Twitter are to appear together to talk about the impact of fake news on their platforms in Delhi, to be broadcast on BBC World News. Among some of its wider findings, the report found that a sense of duty is behind the spread of fake news in Kenya and Nigeria rather than being motivated by a duty to “nation build” like in India. The report examines networks within Twitter and analyses how people are sharing encrypted messaging apps, after users gave the BBC unprecedented access to their phones.

sentation recalled that Jha was appointed as a daily wage contingency-paid darwan on May 25, 2007 in the deputy resident commissioner’s (DRC) office, Kolkata and served for nine years, until his service was terminated on May 17, 2016 due to “misconduct” and “fraud” committed on the guests of Nagaland House. However, it said Jha was re-appointed on June 8, 2016 with an undertaking that action would be initiated against him, if found guilty again. It added that in 2017, a year after the undertaking, Jha was arrested on fraud charges and detained by the railway police at Kolkata May 20, 2017 under Section 143 and subsequently the DRC, Kolkata terminated his service once again on May 24, 2017.
