WASHINGTON, NOV 12 (IANS): Voter turnout in the US this year dipped to nearly its lowest point in 20 years, a media report said. While election officials were still tabulating ballots of Tuesday’s presidential election, the 126 million votes already counted means about 55 per cent of voting age citizens cast ballots this year, CNN said the report published on Friday. The turnout is the lowest in a presidential election since 1996, when 53.5 per cent of voting-age citizens turned out. As election officials go through outstanding ballots -- such as provisional ballots and those with writeins -- the turnout figures will change. But it would take another 18.7 million votes to reach the high point for turnout of 2008, when nearly 64 per cent of voting age citizens cast a ballot. Early results in some of the key states that propelled President-elect Donald Trump to his win revealed that more voters cast ballots this year than in 2012, even though overall turnout was down, CNN reported.

He was number five on China’s top 100 fugitives listed in an Interpol “red notice” and the 36th to be returned so far. After close cooperation between Chinese and New Zealand law enforcement agencies, Yan confessed to his crimes, offered to return “a huge amount of ill-gotten money,” and pay a hefty fine, the CCDI said without further details.

we will keep them in our thoughts today.” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgent group was behind the suicide attack inside Bagram, claiming it inflicted “heavy casualties on US invaders”. The brazen attack represents an alarming security breach inside what is regarded as one of the most heavily guarded military installations in Afghanistan. Bagram Airfield, close to Kabul, has frequently come under attack by Taliban insurgents. L a s t D e c e m b e r, a motorcycle-riding Taliban suicide bomber killed six US soldiers near Afghanistan’s largest US military base. It was one of the deadliest attacks on foreign troops in the country in 2015.

cess road -- major or minor -- around the presidential Blue House. As night fell, Seoul’s main ceremonial boulevard Gwanghwamun became a moving river of flickering candles held by the bannerwaving, slogan-chanting demonstrators calling on Park to step down. As with the previous protests, the huge crowds were extremely mixed, with high school students rubbing shoulders with Catholic nuns, labourers, farmers, retirees and young couples marching with babies or young children. “It was our wedding anniversary yesterday but we cancelled our anniversary trip and came to Seoul because we thought it was
“These alliances could help boost Harris’ profile across the country should she choose to run for president in 2020,” The Huffington Post wrote. In her concession speech, Clinton had said that the glass ceiling could be broken much earlier than thought. “I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but some day someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now,” Clinton told her supporters in New York on Wednesday. “To all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams,” Clinton said.

SEOUL, NOV 12 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children joined one of the largest anti-government protests ever seen in Seoul on Saturday, demanding South Korean President Park Geun-Hye’s resignation over a snowballing corruption scandal. Police put the turnout at 260,000, while organisers said one million people took to the streets for what was the third in a series of weekly mass protests that have left Park fighting for her political survival. On the back of official appeals for calm, police deployed around 25,000 officers, many of them in full riot gear, while police buses and trucks blocked every ac-

KABUL, NOV 12 (AFP): At least four people were killed early today in an explosion inside the largest US military base in Afghanistan, NATO said, with the Taliban claiming responsibility for the major security breach. The explosion struck at dawn inside the heavily fortified Bagram Airfield north of Kabul, as the Taliban step up attacks on Western targets before the onset of winter, when fighting usually ebbs. The nationalities of those killed were not immediately known after the blast, which highlights a worsening security situation nearly two years after NATO formally ended its combat operations in Afghanistan. “An explosive device was detonated on Bagram Airfield resulting in multiple casualties. Four people have died in the attack and approximately 14 have been wounded,” NATO said in a statement. “Response teams at Bagram continue to treat the wounded and investigate the incident.” Waheed Sediqi, spokesman for the governor of Parwan province where Bagram is located, said the blast was caused by a suicide attacker who blew himself up near a dining

more important for our daughter,” said Cho JooPyo, who came with his wife and their two-year-old. Cho’s family had travelled from Jeonju, around 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Seoul -- one of tens of thousands who took trains or buses from towns and cities across the country to demonstrate. “Park Geun-Hye must resign because she didn’t take good care of our country,” said 11-year-old Park Ye-Na. The scandal engulfing Park for the past three weeks has focused on her close friend, Choi SoonSil, who is currently under arrest on charges of fraud and abuse of power. Prosecutors are investigating allegations that Choi, 60, leveraged their friendship to coerce donations from large companies like Samsung to non-profit foundations which she set up and used for personal gain. She is also accused of interfering in government affairs, despite holding no official position. Lurid reports of the unhealthy influence Choi wielded over Park have seen the president’s approval ratings plunge to five percent -- a record low for a serving president.
WASHINGTON, NOV 12 (PTI): Indian-origin California Attorney General Kamala Harris has potential to become the first woman president of the United States, a media report has said, days after Hillary Clinton was unable to break the highest glass ceiling. 51-year-old Harris, whose mother was from Chennai and father from Jamaica, won the US Senate Seat from California in a landslide election this Tuesday, becoming the first black and Asian Senator from the state. Soon thereafter she has launched her nationwide campaign against Trump’s anti-immigrant policies and mass deportation. “Meet Kamala Harris, Who could become the first woman President. California’s popular attorney general is headed to Capitol Hill. The White House might be next,” The Huffington Post wrote yesterday. The Huffungton Post article came a day after she denounced Trumpism. Noting that she has already made history with her Senate win, the daily said she has impressive track record as California Attorney General and has top Democratic leadership including the outgoing President Barack Obama and the Vice President Joe Biden on her side.
