uboni Humtsoe, who heads the indigenous fashion label ‘Precious Me Love’ was awarded the ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016’ for her outstanding contribution to women empowerment. The award was presented by the President of India, Panab Mukherjee on March 8 at the Rastrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2017. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh along with a certificate and was conferred to Zuboni by Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India. Recalling about her journey into coming up with Precious Me Love, Zuboni relates the following account: After graduating from Delhi University I did not want to return home to Nagaland because of the lack of opportunities. However, I had to do it when my father suffered a massive stroke and our family was going through a very hard time. Being a creative person and a dreamer I did not want a Government Desk Job but watching my ailing father suffer broke my heart and that’s when I vowed to work really hard and make my own destiny. Saving Rs.3500 from my college scholarship fund, I dismantled our beds and converted our bedroom into

a walk-in store and started ‘PreciousMeLove’ (PML) through Facebook in 2011. Since we did not have a lot of resources, we worked from the backyard of our house, bootstrapped and on a shoe-string budget, tapping our creative veins, making use of all our available resources to the hilt and using artistic photography to share our story. In the beginning, many people discouraged me saying women can’t or shouldn’t do business. Unmindful, we kept working really hard, made sacrifices, innovated, collaborated, met many wonderful people and made amazing friends. Over time we grew and became an allgirls’ team from the photographers to the seamstresses, stylists to designers, models

to writers, doll-makers to managers. Living in a society that is crazy about the comforts of white collar jobs, there have been many times that we had to literally rebel against our own families. In 2015 Lothungbeni Humtsoe (PML COO) told her father that she didn’t want a Government job and left home to join PML saying, “If PML can do it, even I can do it”. Similarly, against her family’s wishes, Babita Meitei (PML head-crafts designer) continues to work and make beautiful handmade dolls. Other team members also share similar stories of how difficult it is to follow one’s own dream and convince family and relatives most of the times. Today, PML sells ev-

erything from premium Nagaland fashion designs, vintage clothing, and fashion accessories from different designers to handmade dolls of Northeast India. From a simple page in Facebook in 2011 we managed to launch our own fashion e-commerce website in 2016, becoming one of the first fashion e-commerce website from Northeast India. The website also features the PML fashion blog and stories of the beautiful handmade dolls of Northeast India. For more than 5 years now we have been delivering Preciousmelove products to almost every part of the country. From Delhi to Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Gujarat,

Hyderabad, Odisha, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland etc. We also have good clients from abroad buying and supporting us. Keeping social responsibility at the heart of our business we have been conducting and participating in entrepreneurship skill trainings and workshops to encourage more selfempowerment for the students and youths. We are also working towards an inclusive workplace to empower and employ more differently-abled and people from different strata of the society. Entrepreneurship taught us so much, it has empowered us and the best part of it is that we get to empower and better lives of even more. The love and support regardless of gender, tribe, caste, creed, religion, race has been overwhelming and inspiring. And being aware of the problems we face in our side of the country we envision to work relentlessly and create great industries that would be free of any sort of ‘ism’ and to provide a platform of opportunities, welfare and empowerment to generations. This is our dream that we will spread the love we have received through our work to even more.

ndian classical dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale was remembered in Googles doodle which was dedicated to mark the International Womens Day, celebrated on March 8. Rukmini Devi, who led the revival of Bharatnatyam, was featured along with 12 other women, who may not be a household name but made immense contribution in their respective fields. Born in 1904, Rukmini Devi realised the value of Bharatnatyam which was considered a low art in the early 1920s. Her upper caste status and strong public disapproval could not dampen her spirit for presenting the art form on stage. She was one of the artistes who worked for the reestablishment of traditional Indian arts and crafts and revived the classical dance form from its original “sadhir” style. Rukmini Devi was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1956 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1967. She served as a member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for two terms. The other 12 women who have featured in the doodle are: Ida Wells -- American journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist; Lotfia El Nadi -- Egypt’s first female pilot; Frida Kahlo -- Mexican painter and activist; Lina Bo Bardi -- Italian-born Brazilian architect; Olga

Skorokhodova -- Soviet scientist and researcher in the field of deaf and blind communication; Miriam Makeba -- South African singer and civil rights activist; Sally Ride -- American astronaut and the first American woman in space; Halet Cambel -- Turkish archaeologist and the first Muslim woman to compete in the O ly m p i c s ; A d a Lovelace -- English mathematician, wr i te r, a nd t he world’s first computer programmer; Cecilia Grierson -- Argentine physician, reformer and the first woman in Argentina to receive a medical degree; Lee Tai-young -- Korean lawyer and activist who was Korea’s first female lawyer and judge; and Suzanne Lenglen -- French tennis champion who popularised the sport. With eight slide shows, the doodle reminded of the female pioneers and their vast contributions in multiple fields -- from arts to science. Instead of bedtime lullabies and fairy-tale stories, Google this time brought a change in the art of storytelling through the doodle. The doodle began with a grandmother narrating

to her granddaughter the tales of real-life women who stood apart for their courage, made an identity in their respective fields and became inspiration for many. O n Fe b r u a r y 2 8 , 1909, the Socialist Party of America observed the earliest Women’s Day in New York. However, later on March 8, 1917, Women’s Day demonstration sparked the Russian Revolution and the day was eventually declared as national holiday in Russia in 1965. In 1977, the UN adopted March 8 as the International Women’s Day and since then it celebrates women’s rights and world peace.

to defend her feminist values after her topless photo shoot for Vanity Fair – arguing that she ‘can still be a feminist and have boobs’. “Feminism is about giving women choice,” she said. “Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with, it’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it, it’s quite confusing. I’m always just quietly stunned. “The shot itself I was honestly slightly taken aback by, because we’d been doing so many crazy things on that shoot,” Watson continued. “But it felt incredibly artistic and I’ve been so creatively involved and engaged with [Vanity Fair photographer Tim Walker], and I’m so thrilled with how interesting and beautiful the photographs were. “It always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is of what feminism is.”

ever let anyone tell you who you can be, actress Priyanka Chopra told all the girls around the world on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Wednesday. “The one big message I give young girls all around the world and especially young girls in India is… never let anyone tell you who you can be. And what you need to be. And who you should be,” Priyanka said. The former Miss World, who has been roped in as the global ambassador of hair care brand Pantene, sent out the message through a special video for the brand on Wednesday, read a statement. Priyanka, who is earning recognition for her work internationally courtesy her American show “Quantico”, added that “for centuries girls have been told how they need to act, what they need to wear and what they need to dress like” and it is time for girls to take their own calls. “You decide. You figure your future. You decide what is important for you in life,” she added.

digestion process. * Having sweet or cold or frozen food dishes during activation of left nostril helps in harmonising the body fluids without disrupting the body temperature. * It is recommended to sleep on the left side at night because the longer the right nostril is active during this period, the better for digestion and, hence, for overall health. * Sit in Padmasana pose for 10 minutes in morning. Concentrate on the Swadisthan Chakra -- around navel. Do deep breathing through right nostril for 15 times.

It helps in streamlining the digestion flow. * Drinking water from copper vessel is recommended as it helps your body maintain its temperature according to outside weather, thus, helping one to feel rejuvenated and energetic throughout the day. * One can practise this application daily after having lunch and dinner: Lie down straight on plain surface and breathe in normal breathing pattern for eight times, then turn around to right side and breathe for 16 times and then to left side and breathe for 32 times.
