NTAC, JCC serve 7-day deadline on state govt. DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): As resolved on March 3, Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) and Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) served 7-day deadline on state government for suspension of former Police Commissioner Dimapur, DC Longleng and all personnel involved in the January 31 incident in Dimapur and Longleng, with effect from March 8, 2017. In the ultimatum served on chief secretary, NTAC convenor K.T. Vilie and secretary C.T. The committees said since a judicial inquiry was setup, it was a valid ground to place the officers under suspension to hold an impartial enquiry without any influence. T h e m i n i s t e r wa s speaking as chief guest at the International Women’s Day celebration at the Nagaland University (NU), Kohima campus. The programme was organized by the Department of Social Welfare in

collaboration with Nagaland State Social Welfare Board, State Resource Centre for Women and Women Studies Centre, NU on the theme “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 5050 by 2030”. Kiyanilie further said that IWD was all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action, adding that this special day has been occurring for well over a century and it continued to grow from strength to strength. On the occasion, the minister acknowledged all the women in “our lives” including mothers, wives, daughters, friends and colleagues. In her address, the

Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) chairperson, Dr. Temsula Ao, said that in Nagaland scenario to “Be Bold for Change” –– IWD 2017 campaign theme ––was ironic and challenging. On the recent events in that unfolded in the state, Dr. Temsula said initially focus was on the inclusion of women in civic polls through a reservation policy, but the opposition move led to tragic and angry confrontations and deaths obfuscating the women’ rights issue to such an extent that women hohos today find themselves in self-isolation and disarray (Cont’d on p-8)

M’laya not to follow Good Dr. Shürho’s leadership in question: NPCC UNC blockade disrupts GoI-NSCN (I-M) talks Governance Day, Yoga Day S H I L LO N G, M A R 8 (AGENCIES): The confusion over the Centre’s Good Governance Day, which hurts sentiments of Christians was finally raised in Meghalaya legislative assembly on Tuesday. The legislators who took part in a discussion on the matter were united in opposing the Centre’s decision to declare December 25 as Good Governance Day. Replying to a motion moved by HSPDP’s Ardent Basaiawmoit, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, “Meghalaya government did express its displeasure at the Centre’s decision by not observing the day on December 25 but on December 24.” “Government departments have been asked not to observe these days,” Sangma stated while referring to International Yoga Day. However, Daddengre

MLA James Sangma added Meghalaya is observing Good Governance Day on December 24 but instead it should be observed one or two days before since December 24 is also an important day for Christians. Earlier, while moving the motion, Basaiawmoit mentioned the decision is a direct interference in the beliefs of the Christians. Chief Minister also asserted HSPDP MLA’s views on Good Governance Day would be sent to the Centre. He informed the house that only central institutions and private schools in Shillong are observing Good Governance Day and International Yoga Day. Independent MLA John Leslee Sangma remarked the Centre’s decision a violation of the constitutional rights and stressed on the need to take a stand on the matter.

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Wednesday said NPF legislators “continuous parroting” about TR Zeliang’s “supreme sacrifice” despite his “ineptness and treachery” was an insult to the people of Nagaland and particularly to the memory of those who paid with their lives during the recent public agitation. NPCC through its media cell said the statements made by NPF legislators at Peren on March 7, 2017 showed no confidence in the leadership of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who it said seemed to be losing his undisputable hold on the party. “Perhaps the lure of power has blinded the political wisdom of Dr. Shürhozelie to ‘magnanimously part with most of his powers to make TR Zeliang as comfortable as he can be’ in the role of a dual chief minister,” NPCC said. According to NPCC,

Dr Shürhozelie portraying himself as reluctant chief minister was further creating instability with dual power centres. It said if 60 MLAs still supported Zeliang as per legislators’ statement, why was Dr. Shürho risking his reputation in being openly ridiculed by his own party men? Further, NPCC said if Dr. Shürhozelie, after more than four decades in electoral politics, has any iota of self respect, he should ask his cabinet to recommend dissolution of state assembly and seek fresh mandate or else he would be remembered as lame duck chief minister for all times to come. NPCC also said that bankruptcy of leaders in the NPF was slowly unfolding before the people. It said dissident leaders who were accused of creating trouble to topple the government were forgiven and rewarded within fortnight, adding that

indiscipline seemed to have become the gateway for success in NPF’s rotten boat. Further, the congress accused NPF leaders of having fully lost their moral conscience, saying it was evident from their “betrayal” of NBCC brokered agreement with JCC. “Going one step further, they have proclaimed that NPF will continue in power till the second coming of Christ,” said NPCC in an apparent reference to purported remark made by minister CL John at Peren on Thursday. NPCC said it was “unimaginable” that NPF leaders, who were practicing Christians, could stoop down to such levels to boast about their supposed future, saying it was “nothing short of blasphemy.” Change of leadership by NPF, was just an “eye wash exercise” to hoodwink the people in the face of massive social unrest arising out of misgovernance, it added.

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): After the United Naga Council (UNC)-spearheaded economic blockade on Manipur since November 1, 2016, there has been no talks between Centre’s Interlocutor for Naga Talks R.N. Ravi and NSCN (I-M) leaders for over a month. Both sides used to hold both formal and non formal meetings almost on a regular basis but the UNC economic blockade appears to have caused some disruption. According to reliable sources, Ravi has not been available for the meetings, which used to be held at least twice or thrice a week. Sources said Ravi appeared to have been “upset” with the economic blockade and “NSCN’s highhandedness”. The source also went on to

state that solution would be difficult to achieve, if “NSCN keeps fighting the stakeholders”. It maybe be mentioned that in recent interviews to various sections of media, Ravi had said that UNC economic blockade in Manipur would have a serious impact on the Naga peace talks. Ravi was also quoted as saying that the blockade had brought about serious misapprehension between the Nagas and non-Nagas in the Northeast and which would make his task of finding an early amicable solution to Naga issue difficult. Ravi also expressed displeasure over the “stubborn attitude” of NSCN (I-M) on the issue of economic blockade. He also expressed serious concern that the attitude of the group’s leaders would have adverse impact on the progress of the talks.

HC order stays village council resolution NSSATA demands pending salaries Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAR 8 (NPN): Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench by an order dated March 8, 2017 stayed “resolution dated 02.03.2016” passed by the Merangkong Putu (village council) until further order. The order was issued by High Court judge, Justice LS Jamir after hearing the petition filed by-Wapongtemjen, Temjenzulu, Lanuwapang and Lepzungchiba. Among the petitioners, three of them were serving as state vice president of Bharatiya Modi Army (BMA), a unit of Yuva Swabhiman Sewa Samiti. The petitioners contended that the Merangkong Medemsanger Putu Menden resolved on “02.03.2016 to allow only the present MLA, T. Amenba Yaden to contest the 2018 Assembly elections and not to allow

any other candidate to contest.” The petitioners who hail from Merangkong village said they were aggrieved by the village council’s decision “in selecting a person of their choices i.e, the present sitting MLA, T. Amenba Yaden of the 21Tuli Assembly Constituency as the village candidate” for the 2018 elections. As per the village council resolution dated “02.03.2016”made available to the court, it was stated that in 2013 the Merangkong Senso Telongjem (citizens) during an emergency meeting selected the incumbent MLA as the village candidate and continues to be the MLA till date. It said “besides the present MLA, it has been decided and resolved in the joint meeting of the Merangkong Putu and Putu Lanu on 31.01.2017 that: no other new candidate is allowed to

discuss politics or campaign for election from amongst the citizens of Merangkong village. That: under the jurisdiction of Merangkong village, if any anyone is found misleading and distributing money on behalf of some unknown person, the putu will impose punishment on those violators. The resolution signed by secretary Medemsanger Putu Merangkong, Kumsangchiba further stated that any person found violating the order would be held personally responsible. It was also decided give the responsibility to the Merangkong Senso Mongdang Tuli “to carry out the decision.” In this regard, the petitioners pointed out that they were not aware of the impugned resolution dated 02.03.2016, while claiming that no such meeting was held. They alleged that it was the work of few vested

interest persons holding the post in the council. The petitioners were of the opinion that such arbitrary decision of the village council was “illegal”since it was against the Constitutional provisions as well as the provision of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Asserting that incumbent MLA was not a consensus candidate of the entire village, the petitioners said “village authorities, whether be it village council/putu menden/putu lanu, citizen forum or any other village organization cannot select a candidate of their choice and impose a diktat on the entire village to vote for the candidate selected by them.” The court in this regard suspended the 02.03.2016 resolution till further order. The mater would be listed in the court after four weeks, the order stated.

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): Nagaland SSA Teachers Association (NSSATA) has demanded that the State government to immediately release all pending salaries from November 2016 to February 2017 along with arrears of 2016 as assured by the state government on November 2, 2016. NSSATA (2010 and 2013 batch) president Aliba Sangtam and assistant general secretary Asungla Lemtor warned that failure to comply would compel the teachers to deploy any form of action in their fight for survival and livelihood. Also, clarifying on the funding pattern on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme, NSSATA said that the statement issued by principal secretary, FP Solo on releases of funds for implementation of various CSS like SSA, RMSA and Hindi teachers had

only revealed that the State government was not adhering on the central funding pattern. According to the association, the Centre releases adhoc grants in April every year for the start-up programme followed by two instalments- first instalment in April was for expenditure between April to September followed by second instalment in September for expenditure between October to March. Further, as per the Project Approval Board (PAB) GoI rules/guidelines and procedure for release of funds, NSSATA said that whenever the government of India releases

the fund, the State has to immediately transfer the entire amount to its implementing agency (SMA) not later than 15 days and to deposit its matching share (10%) to the State society within 30 days of the receipt of Central fund. After which, state government would submit the Utilization Certificate on time to ensure smooth implementation of the programme. Therefore, NSSATA argued that the question of delay in release of funds by MHRD and payment of (2010 & 2013 batch) teachers’ salaries raised by F P Solo does not arise. (See table)

opposition objects toll Trans-border tunnel discovered M’lya tax on incomplete highway along India-Bangladesh border Correspondent

Correspondent

S hillo n g, M ar 8 (NPN): Troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF) stationed at Indo-Bangladesh border on Wednesday discovered a trans-border tunnel along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. The tunnel measured 3’×2’ in dimension with 20-25 ft depth with dead end, was discovered at Gujangpara area in South West Garo Hills district, which is a militancy-prone region. BSF officials said the area has become very sensitive due to increase of cattle smuggling to Bangladesh in the recent past. “We cannot

rule out anything whether tunnel was dug up for crisscrossing of militants in the international border or is it meant for smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh,” Inspector General of BSF incharge Meghalaya frontier, P.K.Dubey said. However, he said that a team of BSF officials will be visiting the tunnel site on Thursday for further inspection. “After analyzing the terrain it appears the miscreants needed to dig further 200 more metre to reach another end of the India-Bangladesh border fence,” he said. “As the area is densely vegetated with bamboo growth and terrain is undulating, the visibility is not very clear ahead of the

fence,” the statement said. He said the bordering areas flanking both the West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts has become very sensitive due to increase of cattle smuggling recently. “There has been huge seizures of cattle by the BSF troopers in this particular area,” he said, adding that the border guards has plugged all the gaps and Hume pipes/ culverts which were being utilized by the cattle smugglers buy placing iron grills and wire meshes,” the BSF official said. Dubey said the BSF has also increased the intensity of the patrolling in the border areas to prevent trans-border crimes.

S hillo n g, M ar 8 (NPN): Opposition legislators in Meghalaya on Wednesday questioned the government over the collection of road tax on the incomplete ‘Jorabat-Umiam Expressway’ saying it was in violation the Supreme Court ruling. The ‘Jorabat-Umiam Expressway’, also known as National Highway-40, is the lifeline for Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur and Barak Valley of Assam. Raising the issue during the Question Hour, opposition National People’s Party legislator, James K. Sangma, questioned the State government for violating the Supreme Court ruling

which ruled against toll collection on incomplete and dilapidated highway. Commuters traversing on the express highway have been paying road tax for past two years now. However, Public Works Department (Roads) minister, Martin M Danggo informed the assembly that only 5.24 Km of the express highway was incomplete and the toll was collected for the completed stretch of 56.56km. Supporting the NPP legislator, opposition Independent legislator, Saleng A. Sangma informed the assembly that the SC on August 27, 2015 had noted that the National Highways Authority of India and concessionaires cannot collect toll from commuters if the road was in bad shape.

S hillo n g, M ar 8 (NPN): Three persons, including a minor, died on the spot and 25 were injured when the ill-fated pick-up jeep in which they were travelling overturned on Wednesday in a remote village of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, police said. The victims were proceeding from Mawknor village to Saipung village to attend a free eye check-up camp oragnised by Bansara eye care centre. “Two women, Rophina Paslein and Kalbina Pakem, and a five-year-old girl Laipynhunlangki Lamurong died on the spot when the overcrowded pickup jeep overturned at Khahnar village,” Spill Thamar, district police chief of East Jaintia Hills, said. He said the 25 injured persons have been shifted to a Saipung Public Health Centre for immediate medical treatment, while the critically injured victims

A local elder from the village said that the main cause of the accident was mainly because of the pathetic road condition in the village. “The step motherly treatment of the state government towards us by not providing good roads was the main cause of the accident,” the village elder from Mawknor said. Police said they have registered a case and investigation was on to ascertain the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, Meghalaya home minister Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh on Wednesday told assembly that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced an ex-gratia payment for the victims in the February 26 truck accident wherein 19 were killed and 25 injured.

Diphu Mar 8 (NPN): Local units of All Assam Students’ Union Diphu (AASUD) Wednesday protested against the vandalism of the martyrs column and AASU office at Silapathar by members of Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samitee, at Silapathar in Dhemaji district demanding that the names of Hindu Bengalis be unconditionally removed from the list of D-voters (doubtful voters). AASUD, along with representatives of seven or-

ganisations, took out a torch procession from the Diphu Club at 6. p.m Wednesday. Chanting slogans, the protestors marched through the main streets of Diphu town. “We want exemplary punishment of the culprits who outraged the dignity of Assamese people, we have registered protest along with other organizations of Karbi Anglong, we want immediate arrest of Subodh Biswas failing which situation in Karbi Anglong may also worsen and administration should remain ready for this,” Tridip Bora, AASUD official said. He also vehe-

mently criticized the RSS for the whole incident. It may be mentioned here that the Silapathar incident took an ugly turn when a procession marking the conclusion of the public meeting was passing by the AASU office at Silapathar town when undisclosed men, taking advantage of the darkness, pelted stones at the procession. The participants of the rally retaliated by attacking a few activists who were sitting outside the office, assuming that they had thrown the stones, and demolished the AASU office.

Subudh Biswas declared ‘Most Wanted’

GUWAHATI, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): Subudh Biswas, president of the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanvay Samiti (NIBBUSS), has been declared as ‘most wanted’ by the Assam Police for inciting violence in Silapathar. Biswas has been absconding after committing the crime on Monday. According to the police, in this connection, a case has been registered in the Silapathar police station under sections 147, 148, 149, 448, 325, 307, 427 and 153 (A) of the IPC. Dhemaji police has alerted

all police stations across Assam to trace him for interrogation. Police declared him as a wanted person and alerted the SP offices and Assam Police headquarters. Hindu Bengali leader Subudh Biswas incited violence in Silapathar by delivering provocative speech at a rally. The mob led by Biswas attacked the AASU office and damaged several vehicles. They also pelted stones at security forces and clashed with them. At least 12 persons have been arrested by Dhemaji police in this regard.

2007 Ajmer blast: Aseemanand No evidence of Saifullah links with ISIS: UP Police acquitted by NIA court, 3 convicted

NEW DELHI, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): Saifullah, the alleged terrorist with ISIS sympathies who was killed this morning in Lucknow, was likely “self-radicalised’, said a senior police official today. “We have no such evidence yet of any ISIS link,” said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary, about Saifullah who was also allegedly involved in a bomb blast on a train in Madhya Pradesh yesterday. Police earlier said that Saifullah and two others apprehended yesterday were affiliated with ISIS’s ‘Khorasan’ module. The senior policeman added that though police found plenty of ISIS literature in Urdu and in English in the house that Saifullah and two others Faizan and Imran, had been staying in for the past two months, in Haji colony on the outskirts of Lucknow. During the time that the standoff with Saifullah was underway, police managed to apprehend

File photo of Saifullah, ISIS suspected terrorist gunned down in Lucknow. Faizan and Imran. Police also found eight pistols, 650 rounds of ammunition, 50 fired rounds, explosives materials, bomb making instruments, pellets, timers, wires, 45 grams gold, some foreign currency, passports and SIM cards in the house, they said. When asked whether it appeared the alleged terrorists are novices, Chaudhary said not all of them appeared to be beginners, considering they executed a bomb blast yesterday. The “mastermind” of the train terror strike

has been identified as Atif Mujaffar alias Al-Qasim, a well-off engineering student from Aligarh and the selfproclaimed ‘emir’ (chief) of the so-called the “Khorasan module” in India. The ‘Khorasan’ module, an Islamic State offshoot based near the Afghan-Pakistan border, is expanding to new areas, recruiting fighters and widening the reach of attacks in the region. Bolstered by fighters from Pakistani and other militant groups and an active social media presence, some officials said the ‘Khorasan’ module of ISIS has become an “umbrella organization” for disparate movements. Officials said Atif had placed the timer pipe bomb on the train at Bhopal railway station injuring 10 passengers, three of them seriously, when the train was reaching Jabdi station in Shajapur district on Tuesday morning around 9.40 am. Atif was arrested along with Danish Akthar alias

Zafar of Kanpur and Sayyed Mir Hussain alias Hamza by the MP ATS at around 1.30pm from a bus near Pipariya in Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad district.

Saifullah’s father refuses to accept son’s body

Family members of the alleged ISIS terrorist killed in Lucknow yesterday refused to accept his body saying “a traitor” is no son of theirs. “One who indulges in anti-national activities can’t be my son. Look, someone who’s a traitor cannot be our son. It’s that straightforward. We will absolutely not accept a traitor’s body. He has brought infamy not only to us but to the whole nation, therefore we will not accept his body for last rites” said Sartaj, the alleged terrorist’s father, to TOI. Saifullah was killed in Lucknow this morning in an exchange of fire with the police after a 12-hour stand-off. He was suspected to be linked with the blast in the Bhopal-Ujjain train

yesterday, police said. Sartaj, who lives in Jajamau Tila in Kanpur, said he was shocked to hear about his son’s involvement in anti-national activities. Saifullah’s sister Zareen also was completely taken aback to hear the news. Both heard this morning that Saifullah was killed in an anti-terror operation, PTI said. “We are Indians, we were born here, our forefathers were born here and anyone who’s a traitor can’t be a son or any relation of ours,” Sartaj said. Sartaj said Saifullah left home about two-and-ahalf months back after he beat him up for not working. Saifullah apparently told him he wanted to work as a driver in Saudi Arabia. “On Monday, I got a call from Saifullah, who told me that he had got a visa to visit Saudi (Arabia) and he was preparing to go there. I told him go ahead,” the father said. Saifullah was a commerce graduate from Manohar Lal College in Jajmau.

Aseemanand was arrested by NIA on December 26, 2012 in connection with the Samjhauta Express blast case. NEW DELHI, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): Aseemanand and six other people accused in the 2007 Ajmer Dargah blast were acquitted, while three others were convicted, by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Jaipur today. Aseemanand - who goes by the name Swami Aseemanand - was accused of masterminding the blast. Those convicted today are Sunil Joshi (who has since

died), Devendra Gupta and Bhavesh Patel. A total of 13 people were accused in the case. Three are still on the run. On October 11, 2007, at about 6.14 pm during Roza Iftaar, a powerful bomb went off in the compound of dargah Sharif, Ajmer, which killed three persons and wounded 15. According to the chargesheet, a section of radicalised Hindus associ-

ated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh conducted the blasts at Ajmer dargah and Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad in retaliation for the 2002 attack on the Amarnath Yatra and the Raghunath temple in Jammu, allegedly by Muslim terror outfits. The blast was caused allegedly to stir communal disharmony, insult the religious feelings and incite riots during the month of Ramzan. The Rajasthan AntiTerrorist Squad (ATS) filed a chargesheet against three accused persons on October 20, 2010 before the chief judicial magistrate court in Ajmer. But, later, the NIA took over the investigation from Rajasthan ATS on April 1, 2011.

SC lens on Panama leaks investigation out whether investigations were being done properly. The Panama Papers contain an unprecedented amount of information, including more than 11 million documents covering 2,10,000 companies in 21 offshore jurisdictions. Names of around 500 Indians also featured in the leaked documents. Opposing the plea for setting up of SIT, additional solicitor general P L Narasimha told the bench that a multi-agency group, comprising officers of Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT), RBI, Enforcement Directorate and Finance Intelligence wing, was already examining the

issue and it had so far submitted six probe reports. Narasimha contended that the group had so far issued notices to 424 people out of which 103 are NonResident Indians. He urged the court not to appoint SIT and agreed to file affidavit stating the action taken so far by the government in the case. “The court should first go through the six probe reports and if the lordships feel that SIT was still needed, it can pass order for appointment of SIT,” he said and agreed to file reports in sealed envelope. The court was hearing a PIL filed by advocate M L Sharma seeking independent probe against all those

whose names were revealed in the Panama Papers. He said nearly 500 Indians, including celebrities and industrialists, had allegedly parked funds in offshore accounts and they needed to be prosecuted. He told the bench that the Centre was not inclined to proceed against them and sought court-monitored investigations against them. The court, however, said it would first examine the probe reports and then take a call on whether SIT should be set up. The bench said it would also decide whether the probe should be monitored by the court and posted the case for hearing on April 18.

Between The Lines

Vol. XXVII NO. 92 Dimapur, thursday, March 9, 2017

S

Things gone awry

ome things just don’t seem right, at least to ordinary and concerned citizens, who have been witnessing and analysing the current socio-political scenario in Nagaland in the build up to January 30,2017. When the masses protested against the government from January 31, of going back on its words not to hold election for two months, the government dug its heels, perhaps in trying to show to Naga people, who have for long taken it for granted that the government would kow tow, that it will not back down. The consequence of the government’s rigid/obstinate stand precipitated a tragedy when police fired on protestors who had attempted to break into the private residence of the then chief minister in Dimapur, in which two precious lives were lost. Further tragedy unfolded when the bodies of the two were taken to Kohima in coffins, purportedly to protest against leaders who were blamed for the tragedy. The highly charged atmosphere on the streets due to the refusal of the elected leaders who did not even want to talk of resigning to prevent further trouble was as bad as they closing ranks to send the message that “the streets cannot dictate on who should be in or out of the government.” True, streets cannot decide but often in similar situations, demands are resolved on the basis of winning over the hearts and minds through give and take. When the government rejected outright the demands, it only added fuel to the fire when some among the crowd hijacked the protests, by torching more than half a century old government buildings housing at least 24 departments on February 2. Unfortunately, for T.R.Zeliang, his refusal to step down because he had majority support, didn’t go down well with public. When he did finally resign, it was not on moral ground, but when a majority signed to urge him to step down. He finally stepped down several days but after air dashing to Delhi to consult the BJP high command. What seems strange is that the issue raised by the protesting public appears to have been resolved with the resignation of T.R.Zeliang. What doesn’t make sense is whether the entire protest was just to replace the then sitting chief minister? Now the demand is to suspend the then Police Commissioner of Dimapur and police involved in the firing incidents. Does this mean that the demand made as per the February 1, 2017 resolution is no longer valid? Also, the current incumbent Dr. Shürhozelie who replaced T.R.Zeliang, was quoted to have said that he would be around only for a few months. If this is true, then it would mean that the state will have two chief ministers within a few months. Both the government and protestors have not officially met and resolved any issue as far as the public are given to understand. This itself doesn’t seem right. It means that both sides are moving in their own direction(s) and this has the potential of causing another unwanted situation. While this problem remains, the Nagas also face the grim prospect of Article 371A being undeservingly dragged in the women reservation issue due to the case filed in the Supreme Court. All these don’t seem quite right because of something gone wrong somewhere.

DailyDevotion The Surrendered Life

I have been crucified with Christ… —Galatians 2:20 To become one with Jesus Christ, a person must be willing not only to give up sin, but also to surrender his whole way of looking at things. Being born again by the Spirit of God means that we must first be willing to let go before we can grasp something else. The first thing we must surrender is all of our pretense or deceit. What our Lord wants us to present to Him is not our goodness, honesty, or our efforts to do better, but real solid sin. Actually, that is all He can take from us. And what He gives us in exchange for our sin is real solid righteousness. But we must surrender all pretense that we are anything, and give up all our claims of even being worthy of God’s consideration. Once we have done that, the Spirit of God will show us what we need to surrender next. Along each step of this process, we will have to give up our claims to our rights to ourselves. Are we willing to surrender our grasp on all that we possess, our desires, and everything else in our lives? Are we ready to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ? We will suffer a sharp painful disillusionment before we fully surrender. When people really see themselves as the Lord sees them, it is not the terribly offensive sins of the flesh that shock them, but the awful nature of the pride of their own hearts opposing Jesus Christ. When they see themselves in the light of the Lord, the shame, horror, and desperate conviction hit home for them. If you are faced with the question of whether or not to surrender, make a determination to go on through the crisis, surrendering all that you have and all that you are to Him. And God will then equip you to do all that He requires of you.

here was politics even during the period when I was in college before partition. But it was not on communal lines as it is today. Then the enemy was the British and all were at a struggle to oust them. It was the 40s when Qaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah came to the Law College at Lahore and exhorted all of us to make a joint effort to drive out the British. Subsequently, things came to such a pass that even water was divided into Hindu pitchers and Muslim pitchers. We, the students, were not contaminated at that time. We would eat together at the same table, ordering food from the Hindu kitchen as well as from the Muslim kitchen. Today the polarization has contaminated Hindu community, dividing it into castes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not recognise this and recently talked about kabaristan and samshan bhoomi. The complaints the Muslims make is that there are fewer ATMs in their localities and they feel handicapped in withdrawing money. This may be true. But the Muslims do not point out at the real reason. They lost their importance after the creation of Pakistan which was founded on the basis of religion. Congress leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad fought a lonely battle against this thinking during the British period itself. He would say that if the Muslims felt unsafe or insecure in a large country like India, they would feel still more unsafe in a partitioned India because the Hindus would tell the Muslims to go to Pakistan after having taken their share.

Unfor tunately, all these last until the polling dates. Soon after, different parties go their own way and the elected government once again turns a blind eye towards the betterment of Muslims. The wishes and aspirations spelled out in the constitution becomes only a mirage. The Muslims are pushed into the background to be brought back to the forefront before another set of elections. I witnessed a similar scenario when I left my hometown Sialkot. There was no difference during those days and we lived as citizens, not as Hindus and Muslims. I had even got the Crescent tattooed at the bidding of my Muslims friends. However, none of them agreed to my plea that one of them should have a tattoo of OM. They said that they would be beaten up at their home if they did.

We have come a long way from that time. Today, the society is so polarized that the question of tattooing other religion’s symbol does not arise. He would be a brave man who dares the community by violating its code. Muslims prefer to live in a locality where their community’s people are concentrated. They do not feel safe in a mixed or secular habitation. At the same time a Muslim does not get accommodation or think of buying a property in a decent locality. They do not even agitate for it lest they should be misunderstood. But there are instances of Muslims having bought properties in a Hindu locality after the court’s intervention. Of course, there are some misguided elements among Muslims throwing their weight about. However, despite Hindutva factor people in India are realizing that they have to live together as they have done centuries before. That is the idea of India and most people are clutching at it.

The church and its virus in Nagaland Give us a reason to elect you again

T

he arrival of Christianity brought tremendous impact in the life of the Nagas. The early missionaries toiled day and night to educate the Nagas both spiritually and educationally. What was considered uncivilized by outsiders were well polished by them. Christian values began to merge with cultural settings, making it glow even in the dark hours of life. The fruits we enjoy today is the seed of hard work sown by committed missionaries. We must be thankful and remain faithful to our Christian life. After long years of Christian life, things have changed because the term ‘Christian’ is used as an “identity” and not as “name”. Thus, many Nagas call themselves Christians not knowing what ‘Christian’ really means to them. To be a Christian has personal and community touch more than with the structural Church. ‘Christian’ (name) is far separated from the person and ‘Christianity’ (established religion) seems too foreign to us. The Christian values are not intrusion to our cultural milieu. Years back, I remember that some denominations were against the celebration of cultural festivals and tribal dances. Parents were on the lookout lest their children should join such festivities (it’s too unclean because you are a ‘Christian’). Are Christians born in heaven to dwell on earth? No, it is just the opposite. Even some good church leaders began to preach the Word of God wrongly to the congregation. They would say that wearing tribal attires, ear rings, bangles, etc. are against the Holy Bible (which Holy Bible?). The simple flock listened with full heart and lost their tribal assets. Therefore, tribal festivities began to dry up with few members singing merrily hoy, hoy in the village. Their voice resounds beyond the village gate. Men holding a cup of Zü (locally made wine) made the atmosphere even merrier. ‘Christians’ who do not join the tribal festivities began to use IMFL drinks, while others drank just a cup of Zü. That made a great difference between the two. The wall between the two was strongly built like the Great Wall of China. Shockingly, this entire scene changed when tribal dance (show) became monetary. Lots and lots of people began to take part in it. Parents began to search for the lost traditional attires with regrets and tears as they were badly and sweetly cheated in the name of God. Young boys and girls were forced to join the

festival by their grandparents. The money they earn could be used to buy milk powder and sugar for grandparents. Moreover, women folk began to commercialize every tribal shawls and mekhalas. Every new month would mean new innovation. They called it the latest shawls and mekhalas of the tribe. They are sold with exaggerated price to make it more original and valuable. Most of which are used during Christian celebrations (now you got it) than tribal festivals. I am sure Naga women can even design new India Flag because they are culturally so creative! God and Government forbid! Manipulating traditional values and cultural things in the name of conference and convention are too common for Nagas. Therefore, we have lost the taste of culture and hide inside the term ‘Christian’. This is how Christians get divided bit by bit only to be blown away by the wind. The unifying spirit of Christianity is lost in the wild woods. Any building with a Cross on top does not become a Church. Likewise, Church formed by the so called ‘Spiritual Theologians’ may not necessarily be the Church of Christ. The emergence of new churches in Nagaland seems like the rushing water of Dhansari in Dimapur where people take bath only to get dirtier. There is no wrong in forming new churches for the good of the people and as per the need of the people in big towns and cities, yet this has created abundant confusion in the mind of the people. Where does this Church come from? Who is the founder of this new church? Who funded the project? Is it inspired by God or new spirit of men and women? Is it the result of prophesies? Did God say that they must construct a Church at such and such place? The minds of the people are torn apart, and the little faith they have in God is forcibly pushed down by the new standing church. The time will come when every nook and corner of our cities will be filled with new churches. Church leaders will start campaigning to get more and more members under their fold (it has already begun). Any diverse opinion among two or three leaders will result in the birth of new churches. The attitude of ‘In my church, I should be the head, not the body or tail’ will invite further destruction and division. This is what most churches are heading for. If not taken care, Nagas will have their own self-acclaimed

church without the Read Head, Jesus Christ. Many churches bring speakers from foreign lands during conference and convention for external shows (may be foreigners are more Christian than we are). The time has come whereby many Christians claim themselves to be another prophets/prophetess. They can predict the life of their neighbours except their own. Such people can hear the voice of God anytime and anywhere as though God is a piece of “EARPHONE.”They have become foolish Christians instead of fully Christians. Such people are the real virus to Christian community. With the coming of election, the new born prayer groups will emerge from nowhere in the name of God. They predict misfortunes and miseries only for financial gain (may be Heaven can be bought by money and the bank account of such groups reflect their account above). The higher the amount, the better and longer the prayers. Well, a good and delicious food should not be forgotten, because you cannot pray empty stomach (empty stomach make louder noise than your vocal prayers). Such evil practices have already delved the life of Naga Christians. All that glitters is not gold. Be on the lookout… The rush for the birth of new churches are becoming more than the labour rooms of the hospital. I fear that days will come, when Nagaland will conduct ANNUAL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION to spell and name all the churches present in Nagaland -God church, Christ church, Jesus church, Holy Spirit church, Amazing church, the true church, the only true church, the more true church, the better church, harvest church, not yet harvested church, green church, ripen church, paddy field church, jhum church, terrace church, Jerusalem church, Bethlehem church, Israel church, soul church, body church, etc…(if there are churches with such name, it is only co-incidental. Therefore, no offence against any church bearing such name) I am an ignorant Christian with little knowledge of God and neighbour, yet concern about good Christian living. I still believe that some good Church/es will bring about some anti-virus to format or heal such sicknesses in Nagaland. If not treated in time, it will be incurable. G. L. very time whenever election approached you came with colourful promises, but when you got elected you could hardly fulfill any of those heart-warming promises you made. As a matter of fact many common people who were once good and loving neighbours had to fight with one another to get you elected. We know that a good number of the votes that qualified you for the State Legislative Assembly seat were bought, but you should remember that many more than those votes for which you paid were totally clean with the expectation that you’d do at least something for the development and betterment of the society. But now, to begin with look at our roads, look at every state of affairs in our state at present, there is not even a single thing that is going well. When it comes to foreign trips whether for official purposes or personnel you were the most excited person and never made any excuse to skip and that made you to experience for yourselves how Offices in other countries or states are functioning, the numerous public facilities ranging from Sanitation facilities, public transports, Hospitals, Schools, Sports and other cultural training centers for the youth and not forgetting the roads, but coming back home much of the money that are meant/ sanctioned for similar kind of developmental works are nowhere to be found. Instead, even salary for the teachers and employees in various other sectors, Scholarship meant for the students, countless improper appointments made through unfair means depriving the best intellectuals among the equals, many faithful employees with their humble families are left starving, children’s school fees unpaid making the holy and innocent children suffer, students studying without electricity, Hospitals

with no adequate medical professionals, many talented and abled youth living in frustration due to leaders like you who are filled with corruption, nepotism, tribalism and no vision. Whether it is by yourselves or any of your personal Secretaries/ Assistants/ party workers, lots of funds that are meant for development have vanished. As a matter of fact, I doubt if many of you have even visited your constituency after getting elected where your people supported you with much hope, many of you have probably not even attended your District Planning Development Board meetings or Sub Divisional Planning Board Meetings. You have cheated us all these years, yes, we have also made a blunder in making you our representatives because all that you have been doing is kicking enough dust in winter and dirty water in summer upon the poor students and the common people with your super expensive SUVs and now hardly anything in your calculation working sensibly, rather everything have come to a standstill and our state lying in shambles. All that you have taught us is to hate and destroy each other instead of growing together. Now therefore, give us a reason why we should elect you again as our representative for another five years when the public have not gained anything through you. Therefore, we cannot afford to put another term into your hands and reckon that it is time for the youth, men and women of integrity (morally and financially) with vision and dedication to represent the people in the government as Nagaland needs to catch up with the rest of the world on all fronts. The church and search for a music director in Nagaland

Sir,

Something to ponder upon, in regard to the demand for a Music Director in Church at present. Certain requirements which are expected from a candidate are that the person has to be well educated in both Theology as well as in Music with high grades, or who holds a degree in both. In addition a music director should be either of the following: Good Pianist, Drummer, Guitarist, Conductor, etc. such expectations are unwise. The basic element for a Music Director is to be well acquainted with Staff Notation and Conducting. Expertise in other instruments should come as a secondary choice. This is a reason why some churches keep a separate pianist alongwith a Praise & Worship team besides a music director. To give momentum to the points, If we observe thoroughly there are only few Theological Colleges in Nagaland which provides facility of Basic Music. It is a fact that only few people accomplish both Theology and Music when they go for Music Studies as their profession after their Theological Studies. Apart from this the other group of students graduate either as theologians with basic knowledge in Music and vice versa. It is my urge to the church authorities that this Concept is wrong when searching for a Music Director. A person who is well equipped in Music (Music Theory and Conducting), and who is capable can also serve the Lord as Music Director and not only Theological Students. And when there is a search it is rare and difficult to get a person who is professional in both music and theology. Above all let your decisions be based on the performance and capability and willingness of a person and not just quantity education. Let’s change our percept for a better tomorrow. Minimum balance penalty to offset Jan Dhan accounts: SBI The SBI has made it mandatory for savings accounts in metropolitan areas to maintain a minimum balance of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 in urban areas, Rs 2,000 in semi-urban areas and Rs 1,000 in rural areas, from April 1. These charges will be based on the difference between the minimum balance required and the shortfall. For metropolitan areas, if the shortfall is greater than 75 per cent. the charges would be Rs 100 plus service tax. If the shortfall is between 50-75 per cent, the bank would charge Rs 75 plus service tax and for below 50 per cent shortfall, a fee of Rs 50 plus service tax would be levied, according to the SBI notification of new charges. Similarly, for rural areas, the penalty for non-maintenance of minimum balance ranges from Rs 20-50 plus service tax. A number of private sector banks already have the condition for maintenance of minimum balance. ICICI Bank savings accounts need to have a minimum balance of Rs 10,000 in urban and metropolitan areas and Rs 5,000 in semiurban areas.

Delhi Police felicitates 200 women trained in self-defence

New Delhi, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): An Aadhaar card is a must for women living in Below Poverty Line (BPL) households to avail of free cooking gas (LPG) connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the government said on Wednesday. The gover nment launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana last year to provide free LPG connections to 5 crore poor women in three years. “Individual beneficiary desirous of availing the benefit under the scheme [PMUY] is hereby required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authen-

tication,” said a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The women under BPL who do not have Aadhaar number have been asked to apply for it by May 31. Once enrolled for Aadhaar, the beneficiary can apply for free LPG connection by providing the enrolment ID slip or a copy of such a request. Such application will have to be accompanied by one of the government identification documents like bank passbook with photograph, voter ID, ration card, permanent account number (PAN), driving licence, kisan photo passbook or a certificate

of identity having a photo issued by a gazetted officer on an official letterhead, the notification said. The Ministr y has asked state-owned fuel retailing firms to facilitate enrolment of beneficiaries for biometric identification number. In October last, the government made Aadhaar mandatory for availing of cooking gas (LPG) subsidy. The government now gives 12 cylinders of 14.2 kg each at subsidised rates per household in a year. The subsidy on every cylinder is transferred in advance directly into bank accounts of individuals, who then buy the cooking fuel at market rates.

New Delhi, Mar 8 (IANS): The Delhi government has allocated Rs 11,300 crore, almost a quarter of its Rs 48,000 crore Budget, to the education sector, Finance Minister Manish Sisodia said here on Wednesday. “Education is the most important segment of this government. In this Budget, we are now focusing on improving the quality of education in government schools,” Sisodia said in the Delhi assembly. “The allocation for education is Rs 11,300 crore which is 24 per cent of the total Budget.” “We were the first government to allocate maximum share to the education (sector) and this is the consecutive third year that we have been doing that,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said. The Delhi government in the last financial year allocated Rs 10,690 crore for the education sector. Sisodia said 24 new schools will start functioning this year while

construction of 10,000 new class rooms will start during the next fiscal. “Introduction of preprimary classes in 156 government schools will be started in 2017-18 with upgraded infrastructure facilities.” Out of its Rs 48,000 crore Budget for the next financial year, the Delhi government has earmarked Rs 5,736 crore for health and Rs 5,506 crore for transport. Sisodia, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, said 110 Mohalla Clinics are functional in Delhi and the number will be increased to 150 by the end of March. “The gover nment aims to set up 1,000 such clinics in the next financial year.” The number of polyclinics -- secondary healthcare centres -- will be increased from the existing 23 to 150 over the next financial year, he said. For improving the public transport system in the city, 736 more buses under cluster scheme will be added during 2017-18, the AAP leader said.

Mumbai, Mar 8 (IANS): Providing a rationale for re-introducing penalty for non-maintenance of minimum balance in its savings accounts from April 1, State Bank of India chief Arundhati Bhattacharya on Wednesday said the public sector lender needs funds to balance the oeprational costs of Jan Dhan accounts. “Now there is a burden of a lot of things. We have 11 crore financial inclusion accounts - basic savings and Jan Dhan accounts - and have to manage them as well,” Bhattacharya said on the sidelines of a women entrepreneurs’ national convention here. “SBI was the only bank that didn’t have this as we have removed it in 2012,” she said. This condition of maintaining minimum balance will not be applicable to the Jan Dhan accounts, she added. According to reports, the government has asked SBI to reconsider its decision to levy the penalty, though Bhattacharya said that the bank has not received any formal request on this. She also said that SBI’s requirement for minimum balance is lowest among all banks.

GADCHIROLI, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): It was the arrest of Hem Mishra on August 22, 2013, following a tip-off, that foiled Professor G N Saibaba’s plans. He had sent a microchip with Mishra to be handed over to dreaded naxal Narmada Akka in the dense jungles of Gadchiroli. Mishra was nabbed along with Mahesh Tirki and Pandu Narote, who were with him and were acting as mediators. The three were supposed to meet with underground naxal Ramdar. Following their interrogation, cops rounded off Prashant Rahi Deori in Gondia and Vijay Tirki, who acted as his courier, on September 2, 2013. After their interrogation, police zeroed in on Saibaba, who was acting as a Naxal thinktank. But it took them about six months as he operated using pseudo names. Only after getting

The 31 awardees who were honoured included ISRO scientists, first-ever women troupe of Kathakali dancers, India’s first female graphic novelist, survivors of acid attack and trafficking, environment and animal activists, among others.

NEW DELHI, Mar 8 (Agencies): The government and its investment promotion agency, Invest India, are in talks with close to 300 companies both Indian and foreign -to channelize investment of close to $62 billion (over Rs 4 lakh crore) into the country, which may help create over 17 lakh jobs. With proposed investment of around $32 billion by Chinese companies, nearly half the flows being pursued are from China, a move that is expected to help cut the massive flow of imports from across the border, besides creating employment in the country, sources told TOI. On top of the list is Sany, which may invest nearly $10 billion in the wind power space. The list also includes real estate and construction companies such as Dalian Wanda Group, which is in talks with the Haryana government for several realty projects with each planning to invest close to $5 billion.

NEW DELHI, Mar 8 (PTI): A weak global trend and tepid demand from local jewellers pulled gold prices down by another Rs 50 to Rs 29,500 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Wednesday. The precious metal had lost Rs 550 in the last two days. Silver also drifted lower by Rs 400 to Rs 42,100 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said that apart from a weak global trend, fall in demand from local jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market following the end of wedding season mainly kept pressure on gold prices. Globally, gold fell by 0.19 per cent to $1,213.30 an ounce and silver by 0.26 per cent to $17.43 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 50 each to Rs 29,500 and Rs 29,350 per 10 grams, respectively.

KABUL, MAR 8 (AFP): Gunmen dressed as doctors stormed Afghanistan’s largest military hospital today, officials said, in a six-hour attack claimed by the Islamic State group as it makes inroads into the warbattered country. The assault on the Sardar Daud Khan hospital left at least three people dead and 66 others wounded, health officials reported, with explosions and gunfire rattling Kabul’s diplomatic district as dense clouds of smoke rose in the sky. Medical staff hunkered down in the hospital wards posted desperate messages for help on social media, with local television footage showing some of them trapped on the ledge of a top floor window. “Attackers are inside the hospital. LONDON, MAR 8 (PTI): Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a second setback over Brexit after the House of Lords voted to give parliament the right to veto the final outcome of her crucial talks on how Britain leaves the European Union. After a three-hour debate, the House of Lords voted 366 to 268 to back calls for a “meaningful vote” on the final terms of withdrawal from the 28member bloc. Peers yesterday amended the legislation that will authorise May to notify the EU of the UK’s intention to leave and pave the way for official Brexit talks to begin. It is the second defeat the Lords has inflicted on Prime Minister May over the Brexit bill, giving her the power to trigger Article 50 talks, after she and her ministers demanded it be passed by Lords unamended. The Brexit secretary David Davis said the government would try to throw out the amendment and a previous one that would guarantee the rights of EU citizens in the UK when the Brexit bill returns to the House of Commons on Monday. “It is disappointing that the House of Lords has chosen to make further changes to a bill that the Commons passed without amendment,” he said. “It has a straightforward purpose – to enact the referendum result and allow the government to get on with negotiating a new partnership with the EU. “It is clear that some in the Lords would seek to frustrate that process, and it is the government’s intention to ensure that does not happen. We will now aim to overturn these amendments in the House of Commons,” Davis said.

BEIJING, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): Dressed in vermillion coats, colorful scarves and high-heeled boots, the well-coiffed young women accompany delegates at China’s rubber stamp legislature to the Great Hall of the People then hold signs up to guide them back to their buses. In between, the women move on to the equally important tasks of taking selfies and posing for painstakingly composed group photos. TEHRAN, MAR 8 (IANS): Iran on Wednesday said the country will counter the US visa ban against Iranians. “Our earlier countermeasure against Trump’s order (to stop visa issuance for Iranians) is still in place,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Majid Takht-Ravanchi said. On January 27, Trump issued an executive order for a 90-day ban on entry visa issuance for seven Muslim-majority countries. On Monday, the White House revised earlier order and signed a new order that excludes Iraqi citizens, but keeps visa applicants from six other countries, still targeting Iranians.

impeachment, and an election to choose her successor would be held within 60 days. If it is rejected, Park, who has been holed up in the presidential palace with her power suspended, would immediately return to office and stay until the end of her term in February 2018. The 65-year-old conservative president was elected in 2012 partly thanks to the popularity of her father and late army

dictator, Park Chung-Hee. But the scandal involving her secret confidante Choi Soon-Sil has triggered a dramatic downfall of the leader who once was dubbed the “queen of elections” due to staunch support from conservative voters. Choi is accused of using her presidential ties to force local firms to “donate” nearly $70 million to non-profit foundations she then allegedly used for personal gain. She is currently on trial for abuse of power, coercion and fraud. Park is accused of colluding with Choi to extract money from the firms and letting the friend handle a wide range of state affairs, including the nomination of cabinet members. A number of former presidential aides and cabinet members have been arrested and charged with abuse of power or leaking secret state documents to Choi at Park’s order.

Video emerges of ‘son’ of assassinated Kim Jong-Nam

SEOUL, MAR 8 (AFP): A video of a man describing himself as the son of assassinated North Korean exile Kim Jong-Nam emerged today, apparently the first time a family member has spoken about the killing. The video was uploaded to the YouTube page of a previously unknown group, Cheollima Civil Defense (CCD), which claimed to have “extracted” vulnerable members of JongNam’s family with the help of the Dutch, US and South Korean authorities, and was keeping them under protection in an undisclosed location. South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed the

individual on the video is Kim Han-Sol. In the video, the man says in English: “My name is Kim Han-Sol, from North Korea, part of the Kim family. “My father has been killed a few days ago. I’m currently with my mother and my sister. We are very grateful to...” he says, before the audio cuts off and his mouth movements are blacked out. He shows his N. SEOUL, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): The political fate of South Korea’s scandal-hit President Park Geun-Hye will be decided by the country’s highest court Friday, a spokesman said, when it will rule on whether to confirm her impeachment. Park was impeached by parliament in December over a major corruption and influence-peddling scandal that rocked the nation and prompted millions to take to the street to demand her ouster. Eight judges at the Constitutional Court have been reviewing the validity of the motion. “It has been decided that the ruling on the impeachment of the president will be announced at 11am on March 10,” a court spokesman said Wednesday, adding the decision would be televised live. If her removal is upheld, Park would become the first-ever South Korean president to be sacked by

Classical dancer Arundale Zuboni awarded with ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016’ remembered by Google’s doodle

Z

uboni Humtsoe, who heads the indigenous fashion label ‘Precious Me Love’ was awarded the ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016’ for her outstanding contribution to women empowerment. The award was presented by the President of India, Panab Mukherjee on March 8 at the Rastrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2017. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh along with a certificate and was conferred to Zuboni by Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India. Recalling about her journey into coming up with Precious Me Love, Zuboni relates the following account: After graduating from Delhi University I did not want to return home to Nagaland because of the lack of opportunities. However, I had to do it when my father suffered a massive stroke and our family was going through a very hard time. Being a creative person and a dreamer I did not want a Government Desk Job but watching my ailing father suffer broke my heart and that’s when I vowed to work really hard and make my own destiny. Saving Rs.3500 from my college scholarship fund, I dismantled our beds and converted our bedroom into

a walk-in store and started ‘PreciousMeLove’ (PML) through Facebook in 2011. Since we did not have a lot of resources, we worked from the backyard of our house, bootstrapped and on a shoe-string budget, tapping our creative veins, making use of all our available resources to the hilt and using artistic photography to share our story. In the beginning, many people discouraged me saying women can’t or shouldn’t do business. Unmindful, we kept working really hard, made sacrifices, innovated, collaborated, met many wonderful people and made amazing friends. Over time we grew and became an allgirls’ team from the photographers to the seamstresses, stylists to designers, models

to writers, doll-makers to managers. Living in a society that is crazy about the comforts of white collar jobs, there have been many times that we had to literally rebel against our own families. In 2015 Lothungbeni Humtsoe (PML COO) told her father that she didn’t want a Government job and left home to join PML saying, “If PML can do it, even I can do it”. Similarly, against her family’s wishes, Babita Meitei (PML head-crafts designer) continues to work and make beautiful handmade dolls. Other team members also share similar stories of how difficult it is to follow one’s own dream and convince family and relatives most of the times. Today, PML sells ev-

erything from premium Nagaland fashion designs, vintage clothing, and fashion accessories from different designers to handmade dolls of Northeast India. From a simple page in Facebook in 2011 we managed to launch our own fashion e-commerce website in 2016, becoming one of the first fashion e-commerce website from Northeast India. The website also features the PML fashion blog and stories of the beautiful handmade dolls of Northeast India. For more than 5 years now we have been delivering Preciousmelove products to almost every part of the country. From Delhi to Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Gujarat,

Hyderabad, Odisha, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland etc. We also have good clients from abroad buying and supporting us. Keeping social responsibility at the heart of our business we have been conducting and participating in entrepreneurship skill trainings and workshops to encourage more selfempowerment for the students and youths. We are also working towards an inclusive workplace to empower and employ more differently-abled and people from different strata of the society. Entrepreneurship taught us so much, it has empowered us and the best part of it is that we get to empower and better lives of even more. The love and support regardless of gender, tribe, caste, creed, religion, race has been overwhelming and inspiring. And being aware of the problems we face in our side of the country we envision to work relentlessly and create great industries that would be free of any sort of ‘ism’ and to provide a platform of opportunities, welfare and empowerment to generations. This is our dream that we will spread the love we have received through our work to even more.

ndian classical dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale was remembered in Googles doodle which was dedicated to mark the International Womens Day, celebrated on March 8. Rukmini Devi, who led the revival of Bharatnatyam, was featured along with 12 other women, who may not be a household name but made immense contribution in their respective fields. Born in 1904, Rukmini Devi realised the value of Bharatnatyam which was considered a low art in the early 1920s. Her upper caste status and strong public disapproval could not dampen her spirit for presenting the art form on stage. She was one of the artistes who worked for the reestablishment of traditional Indian arts and crafts and revived the classical dance form from its original “sadhir” style. Rukmini Devi was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1956 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1967. She served as a member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for two terms. The other 12 women who have featured in the doodle are: Ida Wells -- American journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist; Lotfia El Nadi -- Egypt’s first female pilot; Frida Kahlo -- Mexican painter and activist; Lina Bo Bardi -- Italian-born Brazilian architect; Olga

Skorokhodova -- Soviet scientist and researcher in the field of deaf and blind communication; Miriam Makeba -- South African singer and civil rights activist; Sally Ride -- American astronaut and the first American woman in space; Halet Cambel -- Turkish archaeologist and the first Muslim woman to compete in the O ly m p i c s ; A d a Lovelace -- English mathematician, wr i te r, a nd t he world’s first computer programmer; Cecilia Grierson -- Argentine physician, reformer and the first woman in Argentina to receive a medical degree; Lee Tai-young -- Korean lawyer and activist who was Korea’s first female lawyer and judge; and Suzanne Lenglen -- French tennis champion who popularised the sport. With eight slide shows, the doodle reminded of the female pioneers and their vast contributions in multiple fields -- from arts to science. Instead of bedtime lullabies and fairy-tale stories, Google this time brought a change in the art of storytelling through the doodle. The doodle began with a grandmother narrating

to her granddaughter the tales of real-life women who stood apart for their courage, made an identity in their respective fields and became inspiration for many. O n Fe b r u a r y 2 8 , 1909, the Socialist Party of America observed the earliest Women’s Day in New York. However, later on March 8, 1917, Women’s Day demonstration sparked the Russian Revolution and the day was eventually declared as national holiday in Russia in 1965. In 1977, the UN adopted March 8 as the International Women’s Day and since then it celebrates women’s rights and world peace.

I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it, it’s quite confusing. I’m always just quietly stunned. “The shot itself I was honestly slightly taken aback by, because we’d been doing so many crazy things on that shoot,” Watson continued. “But it felt incredibly artistic and I’ve been so creatively involved and engaged with [Vanity Fair photographer Tim Walker], and I’m so thrilled with how interesting and beautiful the photographs were. “It always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is of what feminism is.”

Concentrate on the Swadisthan Chakra -- around navel. Do deep breathing through right nostril for 15 times.

It helps in streamlining the digestion flow. * Drinking water from copper vessel is recommended as it helps your body maintain its temperature according to outside weather, thus, helping one to feel rejuvenated and energetic throughout the day. * One can practise this application daily after having lunch and dinner: Lie down straight on plain surface and breathe in normal breathing pattern for eight times, then turn around to right side and breathe for 16 times and then to left side and breathe for 32 times.

I-League: Bagan comes from behind to draw against Mumbai

Mohun Bagan players celebrate after scoring a goal on Wednesday.

set before Balwant (89th) headed in at the back post from a delectable Sony Norde cross. The result saw Bagan, third in the standings, move to 22 points from 11 games, seven adrift of surprise leaders Aizawl FC who are 29 from 13 outings. East Bengal are second with 27 in their kitty from 13 matches. Mumbai, at the opposite end of the spectrum,

lifted themselves off the foot of the table with the stalemate, having 10 points from 13 games. It took Mohun Bagan twelve minutes to take the lead. Norde’s corner was flicked on by Yusa Katsumi to Pritam Kotal who had ghosted inside the box to volley into the roof of the net. But their joy was short lived when Mumbai scored twice in two minutes. While

the first goal came out of nowhere, the second was due to a defensive error. Pratesh Shirodkar’s attempt was tapped in by an alert Thoi with the ball ballooning over Debjit Mazumdar and nestling into the back of the net. Two minutes later, the Bagan defence was caught n a p p i n g a s Vi c t o r i n o sneaked in between Anas Edathodika and Eduardo Ferreira to turn in Clyde Fernandes’ cross. There was a surprise substitution for the away side as Clyde made way for Chinta Rao in what looked like a defensive shuffle. At the half hour mark, Mumbai could have added insult to injury had Baljit converted Shirodkar’s cross from close. Bagan’s woes were compounded when Debjit picked up a knock which was bad enough for him to not be able to continue. He was replaced by Shilton Paul after play was stopped for sometime as he was being treated on the field. There was drama after an hour of play when Kattimani illegally handled a back pass from seasoned

D u b ai , M arc h 8 (IANS): Indias Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja on Wednesday became the first pair of spinners to be jointly top-ranked in the International Cricket Council rankings for Test bowlers while a poor outing in the first two Tests against Australia have pulled India skipper Virat Kohli down a rung to third among the batsmen. Jadeja’s seven wickets in the second Test, which included a crucial 6/63 in the first innings, have helped him move up one rank to reach the top position for the first time in his career. The last time two bowlers shared the top spot was in April 2008 when Dale Steyn and Muttiah Muralitharan were at

campaigner Mehrajuddin Wadoo inside the box with the referee awarding the hosts an indirect free kick. There was no joy from it as Mumbai lived to fight another day. Bagan had a giltedged chance to level things as Balwant found the post from a lofted Anas pass. Jeje Lalpekhlua soon after had another good chance as he stayed onside but instead of pulling the trigger cushioned the ball for Balwant who could not get on the end of it. Bagan’s efforts paid off finally when Balwant nodded in Norde’s sublime cross at the far post leaving Kattimani stranded.

CL: Real fend off Napoli; Bayern humiliates Arsenal

Arturo Vidal (right) celebrates Arjen Robben’s second-half strike on another night when Bayern brushed aside Arsenal.

Naples/ LONDON, Mar 8 (IANS): Sergio Ramos led Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Napoli for a 6-2 win on aggregate in the second leg and a seventh consecutive trip to the Champions League football quarter-finals for the holders here. H av i n g a l r e a dy hoisted the trophy a record 11 times, the Blancos are trying to become the first team to win Europe’s elite club competition two years in a row, reports Efe. Thanks to their away goal in the first leg in Madrid, Napoli, though clearly the underdogs, started the match knowing they could advance with a 2-0 performance. The hosts star ted a g g r e s s i ve ly a n d t h e Blancos responded by sitting in and waiting for a chance to punish Napoli on the counterattack with the pace of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. But the Italian side’s

ambition bore fruit in the 24th minute, when Dries Mertens took a pass from Marek Hamsik and beat Blancos goalkeeper Keylor Navas with a low shot to put Napoli ahead 1-0 on Tuesday night and within one on aggregate. The goal forced Real Madrid to venture more on offense. Ronaldo hit the post in the 29th minute and Mertens did likewise nine minutes later. Real Madrid were much improved in the second half, with Ramos setting the tone. On successive Toni Kroos corners, the Blancos captain scored in the 52nd and 57th minutes -- though the second marker was later charged to Napoli’s Mertens as an own goal -- to give the visitors a commanding 5-2 lead on aggregate. Alvaro Morata added a goal in stoppage time for Real Madrid.

Arsenal crash out of Champions League with loss to Bayern

German football giants Bayer n Munich humiliated Arsenal 5-1 to complete a 10-2 triumph in their Champions League knockout stage tie at the Emirates Stadium here. While few expected the Gunners to prevail after being routed 1-5 in the first leg in Munich, the disgust of the fans at the Emirates after the final whistle on Tuesday was palpable, reports Efe. This marks the seventh consecutive year, Arsenal has been knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16. Already facing a massive challenge, Arsenal suffered a setback even before the match started, as Danny Welbeck injured himself during the warmup, forcing Arsene Wenger to go with Olivier Giroud up front.

of the match. The first quarter went on to be an eventful one for the hosts, as Gurjit Kaur successfully converted a penalty corner in the 15th minute to take her side 2-0 up against Belarus. Though the two teams showcased good defensive structure in the following two quarters, the visitors

found a break through in the 52nd minute when Yuliya Mikheichyk successfully converted a penalty corner. However, the Indian defence held strong t h e r e a f t e r, a n d e v e n converted a penalty corner through skipper Rani in the 55th minute to eventually seal the match in their favour.

The Gunners made a good start, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott providing most of the creativity on offense. Giroud and Hector Bellerin both had chances, but it was Walcott who delivered the goal in the 20th minute to give his side a glimmer of hope against a flat Bayern squad. Arsenal nearly got a second goal shortly after the restart, but Giroud’s header went over the crossbar a few minutes before the incident that turned the match on its head. Gunners captain Laurent Koscielny brought down Robert Lewandowski in the area in the 54th minute. The referee pointed to the spot and showed Koscielny a yellow card, but after consulting with the fifth official behind the goal, he swapped the yellow for red and ejected the Arsenal defender. Lewandowski converted the penalty and the floodgates opened, as the demoralised and shorthanded Arsenal squad went on to concede four more goals in the team’s worst-ever loss at the Emirates. Ar jen Robben scored in the 65th minute, capitalising on a poor clearance by Gunners goalkeeper David Ospina. Ten minutes later, a mistake by Granit Xhaka led to Douglas Costa’s goal to make it 3-1 for Bayern. Arturo Vidal tacked on two more goals, in the 82nd and 85th minutes, to push the aggregate score to 10-2.
