SHILLONG/AGARTALA, MAR 3: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with its partner— Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) on Saturday scripted history by winning the Tripura Assembly polls, ending 25 years of uninterrupted rule of the CPI(M)led Left Front in the state. The BJP and IPFT won 43 seats. The CPI(M) won 16 seats and the Congress none. A virtual political nonentity all these years in the tiny Left’s citadel northeastern state, where BJP had drawn a blank in terms of seats and secured only 1.5 per cent of votes in the assembly polls five years back, the saffron outfit along with tribal party ally comfortably managed a two-thirds majority. All the seven Congress MLAs who joined the BJP last year won from their respective constituencies. Polling in Charilam (Reserved-Tribal) was deferred to March 12 after CPI-M candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma died a

week before the February 18 polls. Votes for this will be counted on March 15. Tripura Pradesh BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb, who won from Banamalipur, is tipped to be the Chief Ministerial choice. Riding on Saturday’s electoral victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party President Amit Shah told BJP workers that their goal now should be to capture power in Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Odisha. In Meghalaya voters returned a hung Assembly on Saturday, with the ruling Congress emerging as the single largest party with 21 seats in the 60-member House, 10 shorts of the 31 seats needed to retain power. The National People’s Party (NPP) was at the second position with 19 seats. The BJP, which contested 47 seats, could win only two. Polling for 59 Assembly seats, out of a total of 60, was held on February 27. A Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate was killed in an IED blast, which resulted in countermanding

of the polls in one seat. The Congress had no pre-poll arrangement with any party. The BJP, which made a serious bid to dethrone the 10-year-old Mukul Sangma government, also had no seat-sharing arrangement with any party. However, the NPP is an ally of the saffron party at the Centre and in Manipur. NPP chief Conrad Sangma said, “We are hopeful that we will be able to form the government. People are fed up with the corrupt Congress government and are looking for a change.” Sources informed that NPP and BJP, with a combined tally of 21, along with smaller parties were confident to form the government in Meghalaya. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won six seats followed by the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) with four and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) with two. The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and the Nationalist Congress Party won one seat each. (More on p-4)

KOHIMA, MAR 3 (NPN): In a rare case, the result of 6- Tening Assembly Constituency (A/C) which was earlier declared as having been won by NPF candidate Namduadi Rangkau Zeliang by a margin of 32 votes was being overturned. In the result declared on March 3, N.R. Zeliang defeated his nearest rival, NDPP candidate and sitting MLA Namri Nchang. According to chief electoral officer (CEO) Nagaland, Abhijit Sinha, the Polling Officer had detected the anomaly in figures tallied but by then the result was declared in favour of N.R. Zeliang, the brother of chief minister T.R. Zeliang. Sources said the result was rectified in favour of NDPP candidate Namri Nchang. However, Sinha said the rectified result will be officially declared only after getting the nod from the ECI. The win will increase the tally of NDPP to 18 seats and also mean that the PDA alliance will now have a total of 32 members. It was also expected that two NPP legislators will also likely join the PDA.

ship led by Neiphiu Rio at hotel Saramati. The NDPP-BJP alliance along with one independent and one JD(U) MLA have decided to form a new coalition known as the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA). Talking to Nagaland Post, NDPP secretary general, Abu Metha informed that the NDPP-BJP alliance along with JD (U) and independent MLAs have fi-

nalized the coalition (PDA) and will be staking claim to form the government by Sunday. Metha said they are expecting more to join the alliance. He also thanked Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and BJP national presi-

dent, Amit Shah for having faith in his leadership. Rio further thanked minister of state for Home, Kiren Rijiju and other BJP leaders for extensively campaigning for the NDPPBJP alliance in the state. BJP to stand by its pre-poll commitment: Madhav Prominent losers of 2018 Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M ar 3 (NPN) Bharatiya Janata Party has confirmed that it will stand by the pre-poll alliance it had made with the Nationalist Democratic People’s Party (NDPP). BJP national general secretary, Ram Madhav, who air-dashed to Dimapur Saturday evening by a special chartered flight, said that since the alliance had obtained required numbers for a simple majority to form the government, the party will keep its commitments. In an interview with Nagaland Post at hotel Saramati, here on Saturday, Madhav said the alliance would be meeting the Governor soon to stake claim to form the government. Assuring of a stable government for a full term, Madhav said, “The alliance together has

30 elected representatives and with the support of the independent, JD (U) and hopefully NPP, we would ensure a stable government for five years.” To a query whether NPP had joined the alliance, Madhav said the state party leaders were in talks with NPP National leaders in Meghalaya. He said NPP is part of the BJP government in Manipur, and that the BJP was in a possibility of extending their support to the NPP in Meghalaya, he hoped that NPP would reciprocate in Nagaland as well. NDPP leader and chief ministerial candidate Neiphiu Rio who was also present at the hotel to meet Madhav, said the alliance was scheduled to meet the Governor on Sunday and apprise him of the current political situation in the state. Regarding the government formation, Rio

said that will be decided after the parliamentary board meeting of both alliance partners to choose their respective representatives in the ministry and which could be done by earlier next week. On being asked whether the Prime Minister had spoken to him after the results, Rio answered in negative. However he said BJP National President, Amit Shah, had called him up and that the two had some discussions during which the latter informed that PM Narendra Modi had also conveyed his congratulations on the alliance’s victory. He said the alliance was fully committed to fulfilling the election manifestos which the alliance had been publicising through media houses in the run-up to the elections. On whether the government would provide a

stable government unlike the last one, Rio said his relation with BJP goes a long way back and that under his leadership, there had been an alliance since 2003. Rio said he would fulfil whatever responsibility given to him by BJP to provide a stable government. BJP election committee convenor, Dr. M. Chuba Ao, echoed the words of Madhav saying the party was committed and clear on its stance in regard to the pre-poll alliance it had made with NDPP. Answering to a query on the remarks given by Minister of State, Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju ahead of the final result declaration which was circulated in print and electronic media, Dr Chuba said, that could be the former’s personal view in order to ensure that the party do not remain in the opposition.
