Nagas should move to the future: Jamir Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, MAR 12 (NPN): Former governor and chief minister, Dr. S.C. Jamir lamented that Nagas, including public leaders, were only obsessed with the past instead of being concerned with their future destiny. He said this while speaking at the 6th annual general session of Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) at Lotha Hoho Ki, near DC office junction, here on Tuesday. Dr. Jamir regretted that though Naga history was uniquely constructed by “our forefathers”, yet it was high time the Nagas became determined to create a new history of progress, prosperity, harmony and harmony. Referring to the CNTC gathering with representatives from Ao, Lotha and Sumi community, Dr. Jamir asked CNTC, if it regarded themselves as advanced tribes, whether the constituent tribes were in sync with changes currently sweeping the world in socio-political sphere as keeping abreast with all these lead to emergence of new scientific ideas.

Rape accused jailed for 10 years KOHIMA, MAR 12 (NPN): A local court sentenced one Bijoy Mushahari to 10 years in prison for raping a minor girl in March, 2017. Principal District and Session judge and special judge (POCSO) Kohima, after hearing the Special Public Prosecutor and the defense counsel, found Mushahari guilty and sentenced him to ten years in prison. The arrest was made following a complaint filed by Chiechama Village Youth Organization president at Kohima Women Police station, Public Prosecutor Kathu Rengma stated in a press note. The case was investigated by UBSI S. Yawao and submitted the charge sheet against the accused. During the course of investigation, ten witnesses were examined.

Dr. S.C. Jamir (NP)

He said, “We will all be judged by our ability to adapt with the changing world. We cannot remain indifferent to the changes that are taking place both in our neighbourhood and rest of the world, if we are to be considered as the most advanced tribes.” The former governor of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Odisha remarked that Nagas are at a critical juncture, not knowing which way to go. He also maintained that past education did not fit into the current advanced educational system. Dr. Jamir pointed out that Nagas in the good old days stood united, spoke in one voice and had one goal– creation of a separate homeland – under the banner of Naga

National Council (NNC) . He said the NNC followed a “democratic, peaceful and non-violence approach”. He said NNC leaders in the past listened to other people and accommodated others’ views and opinions in their political struggle. However, he observed that beginning of the downfall of the Naga political movement began with beginning of violence caused by armed conflicts between security forces and Naga armed forces. During his term as head of Congress governments, Dr. Jamir said the Nagas used to be hammered from both sides and became victims of fratricides. On factionalism within the Naga polity, he opined that the biblical term of the tower of Babel was replicated in Naga political movement and it was continuing till today. “Factionalism underground and over ground had completely undermined the goals our forefathers had set for the Naga people. They had dreamed of ‘Naga Canaan land’, but sadly it is over as the spirit of nationalism, oneness and unity had been lost due to our greediness. And here we are

today as a divided house,” he lamented. Dr. Jamir, however, saw a glimmer of hope through the efforts of all stakeholders, both over ground and underground. He said he saw emergence of a new dawn in Naga political movement with various factions engaging together and fighting for the same cause. He called for adopting a positive approach to Naga problem by appreciating difficulties of each other as this could decide “our future”. In this regard Dr. Jamir turned on the CNTC saying it was now the duty of the body and other Naga organisations to encourage all groups to work together as a team and fight for a single cause for the welfare of the Nagas. He also appealed to the CNTC not to only think about the three tribes only, but of the Nagas as a whole. Calling for a “united, progressive, prosperous, harmonious and peaceful Nagaland”, Dr. Jamir said Nagas too should have the will power to survive like the Israelis, excel in whatever they do and the will to dominate through achievements.

‘Exclusion from draft NRC not to affect voting rights’

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): The Election Commission on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that exclusion of over 40 lakh persons from Assam’s draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not affect their voting rights in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls if their names figured in the electoral rolls. Allaying the fears of those not included in the draft Assam NRC, the EC Secretary – who was summoned by the court—told a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi that exclusion from NRC will not have any bearing on their voting rights. The Bench wanted to know what action will be taken by the poll panel if a person’s name was not included in the final NRC to be published on July 31, but it was there in the electoral rolls. It asked EC to provide the data by March 28 i.e. the next date of hearing about addition and deletion of names in the revised voters’ list published in the month of January in 2017, (Cont’d on p-8) 2018 and 2019.

Our greed has given way to unsustainable living: Along Correspondent

KO H I M A , M A R 1 2 (NPN): Higher & Technical Education minister, Temjen Imna Along on Tuesday expressed regret that Nagas have randomly cut down virgin forests for vested interests, saying “we are like criminals in the line of our land use policies.” “Our greed has given way to unsustainable living,” he rued. Along made this remark during the inaugural function of the three-day international symposium on “Integrated land use management in the eastern Himalayas: Focus on Nagaland” organised by botany department of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, USA, which got underway at the college premises. Though the State had some good policy makers and eminent institutions, Along noted with regret that the “biggest problem” faced by the Nagas today was that these policies did not penetrate to the grassroots level.

Temjen Imna Along (NP)

“People have great plans and ideas, but somewhere we are not able to implement on the ground,” he lamented. Expressing concern over the imminent adverse impact of climate change, the minister said 71% of the Nagas living in rural area were still practising jhum cultivation and burning down forests. “We are at the threshold where climate change is greatly going to affect the State,” he warned. He also lamented that poor performance in agricultural and horticultural sectors by the departments concerned. He said candidly that though the departments might be showing that they were doing well,

it was altogether a different story at the ground level. Towards this end, he was of the view that if the young people did not speak up and point out what was happening, then the coming generations would suffer. “We are going to have barren land and our future generation will suffer because of what we are doing today,” he cautioned. He said none from outside the State was responsible for this, but “we ourselves” for allowing it. The minister urged young minds with education and knowledge to go the villages and campaign against the hazardous practice they were indulging in, and show them the right way. This, he said would go a long way to secure a green environment, sustainable and robust economy. Despite the best efforts from the State government, he said the biggest problem was the poor living condition of the people and absence of any sustainable plan. (Cont’d on p-8)
