Court formally ousts S. Korea’s president

efits of protecting the constitution that can be earned by dismissing the defendant are overwhelmingly big. Hereupon, in a unanimous decision by the court panel, we issue a verdict: We dismiss the defendant, President Park Geun-hye.” Lee accused Park of colluding with her longtime confidante and private citizen Choi Soon-sil to extort tens of millions of dollars from businesses and letting Choi meddle in state affairs and receive and look at documents with state secrets. Those are the allegations that prosecutors have already raised, but Park has refused to undergo any questioning, citing a law that gives a sitting leader immunity from prosecution. It is not clear when prosecutors will try to interview with her. Park won’t vacate the presidential Blue House today as her aides are preparing for her return to her private home in southern Seoul, according to the Blue House. Park wasn’t planning any statement today, it said. South Korea must now

hold an election within two months to choose Park’s successor. Liberal Moon Jae-in, who lost to Park in the 2012 election, currently enjoys a comfortable lead in opinion surveys.

2 dead in protests

South Korean police say a second person has died in protests against a court’s decision to remove President Park Geun-hye from office. Police had no other details about the death on Friday. Hospital official earlier said that another person, a man in his 70s, died from head wounds after falling from a police bus in front of the Constitutional Court after it ruled to oust Park. The official said the man, believed to be a Park supporter, was bleeding heavily when he arrived at the office and died at around 13:50. Thousands of Park’s supporters angrily reacted to the verdict, shouting and hitting police officers with flag poles and climbing on buses the police used to create a perimeter protecting the court.

Pak adopts Hindu marriage law

ISLAMABAD, MAR 10 (IANS): The Pakistani parliament has adopted the landmark Hindu Marriage Law to regulate the community’s marriages in the country. The Hindu Marriage Bill, unanimously passed on Thursday, will be the first personal law to regulate marriages in the Hindu community living in Pakistan, Dawn online reported. Minister for Human Rights Kamran Michael presented the bill, which was approved by the Senate in February, in the National Assembly. It now needs President Mamnoon Hussain’s signature to become a law. According to Michael, it was a constitutional obligation to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of minorities and to protect the marriage, the family, the mother and the child. “There was no law to regulate the registration of Hindu marriages and ancillary matters thereto”, he said.

M O S C OW, M A R 1 0 (IANS): Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has urged Israel to focus on modern world affairs, after the visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to an ancient legend of an Iranian forefathers attempt to eradicate the Jewish people. Putin and Netanyahu touched upon a range of issues during their meeting in Moscow on Thursday, such as the fight against terrorism, the crisis in Syria and Israel’s tough relations with Iran, RT news reported. The Russian President began by wishing Netanyahu a happy Purim, a traditional Jewish holiday that marks the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, a vizier in the ancient Persian Empire. In response, Netanyahu said Persia made “an attempt to destroy the Jewish people that did not succeed” nearly 2,500 years ago, and stressed that “today there is an attempt by Persia’s heir, Iran, to destroy the state of the Jews”. “They say this as clearly as possible and print it in black and white in their newspapers,” he said. However, this time Israel has its own territory and an army that protects its territory, Netanyahu said. Putin noted that those events had taken place “in the fifth century BC”, and added that “we now live in a different world” and suggested discussing the actual up-to-date problems in the region, according to the report.

KUALA LUMPUR, MAR 10 (AFP): Malaysia’s police chief today confirmed that the man assassinated at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport last month was Kim Jong-Nam, halfbrother of N. Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un. “We’ve now established that Kim Chol is Kim Jong-Nam,” Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar told a news conference, but he declined to give details of how the body’s identity was confirmed. “For the security of the witnesses so I’m not going to tell you how it was done,” he said. Malaysian authorities had earlier declined to officially confirm the victim’s identity or release his body. The 45-yearold was carrying a passport bearing the name of Kim Chol when he was attacked on February 13 with the lethal nerve agent VX by two women.

Le Pen could still win election: Experts

PARIS, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): Marine le Pen cannot be ruled out of the French Presidential election any longer, experts have claimed. Analysts have suggested that fresh scandals, unrest or terror threats would be necessary to push the Front National candidate to victory. Bruno Cautres, from the Cevipof think tank, told The Local: “Six months ago the possibility of her winning was zero. Now, we cannot say that.” The French presidential election is conducted in two stages. In the first round, which will take place on 23 April, several candidates will compete for a slice of the public vote. Then the two candidates with the most support go into a headto-head final vote, held two weeks later on 7 May. Polls published this week show Emmanuel Macron, the former investment banker running on a probusiness, socially liberal

TOKYO, MAR 10 (Agencies): Japan is ending its peacekeeping mission in troubled South Sudan after five years, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Friday. Abe said Japan would not renew the mission after the current rotation returns in May. The 350-person team has focused on road construction. The team, which arrived in South Sudan in November, was Japan’s first to have an expanded mandate to use force if necessary to protect civilians and U.N. staff. The Japanese military’s use of force is

ister is facing a formal embezzlement enquiry over claims he paid his wife and children €900,000 (£785,000) from the public purse in exchange for little or no work, in an affair dubbed “Penelopegate”. And this week it was further alleged he failed to declare a tax-free loan of €53,000 (£46,000) from a billionaire businessman. The latest polling figures marks a significant change from last month, when Le Pen was eight

points ahead of secondplaced Fillon and 10 ahead of Macron. Leading French politicians such as Democratic Movement president François Bayrou and former Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë have leant their weight to the Macron campaign, urging voters to get behind anyone who can defeat the far-right populist Front National. Received wisdom is that Le Pen will inevitably be defeated in the final headto-head vote, as voters of all political stripes come together to defeat the hardline anti-Islam, anti-immigration party. This happened in 2002, when Le Pen’s father Jean made it into the final run-off for the first time, only to be defeated by Jacques Chirac in a record landslide. Another polling organisation, which has Le Pen ahead by 4 points in the first round, found Fillon and Macron would both defeat her in a secondround contest.

SEOUL, MAR 10 (AP): In a historic, unanimous ruling today, South Korea’s Constitutional Court formally removed impeached President Park Geun-hye from office over a corruption scandal that has plunged the country into political turmoil and worsened an already-serious national divide. Two people later died during protests against the court’s decision, which capped a stunning fall for Park, the country’s first female leader who rode a wave of lingering conservative nostalgia for her late dictator father to victory in 2012, only to see her presidency crumble as millions of furious protesters filled the nation’s streets. The ruling by the eightmember panel opens Park up to possible criminal proceedings prosecutors have already named her a criminal suspect and makes her South Korea’s first democratically elected leader to be removed from office since democracy replaced dictatorship in the late 1980s. It also deepens South Korea’s political and security uncertainty as the country faces existential threats from perennial rival North Korea, reported economic retaliation from a China furious about Seoul’s cooperation with the US on an anti-missile system, and questions in Seoul about the new Trump administration’s commitment to the countries’ decades-long security alliance. Park’s “acts of violating the constitution and law are a betrayal of the public trust,” acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said. “The ben-
