NE youth beaten up, made to lick shoes in Bengaluru BENGALURU, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): A youth from the Northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh was reportedly beaten up black and blue in Bengaluru and was made to lick the shoes of the landlord in whose house he was staying as a tenant, Asianet report stated. The youth was identified as Higio Guntey, a student of Christ University in Bengaluru. He said that the house owner verbally abused him for using extra water. Two hours later, the owner who was allegedly drunk, was said to have banged the door and started beating up Guntey for almost an hour. “After beating me black and blue, he still was not satisfied. He beat me again and forced me to put on his shoes and made me lick and kiss them. He kicked me out of the house. He even threw my trolley from the third floor. This is very humiliating,” he said. Soon after the incident, he said he left the house and went to stay with his friends at a different locality. “Three Arunachal girl students are also staying the building. I fear their safety too,” he said. Guntey later filed a complaint to seek legal action against Hemanth Kumar, the house owner.

Earlier, the ANHTU Kohima unit submitted memorandum to the district education officer. Wokha: As part of phase-II agitation, all 99

According to unit general secretary Leose Sangtam, the Hindi teachers across the state were not paid their monthly salary for more than nine months, which has led to picketing of SDEO office in the district. He further appealed to the government to take serious concern of the Hindi teachers and pay their salary
on time. Around 40 Hindi teachers participated in the picketing. No untoward incident was reported during the protest. NPCC fires salvo at CMO, NPF
Budget: Finance deptt informs
DIMAPUR, MAR 10 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Friday launched a scatching attack on Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) media cell and the NPF party spokesman for apparently blaming the media for quoting the NPF media and press bureau statement “out of context” and accusing the Congress party “of making a ‘mountain of a molehill’ on the bizarre claims of the NPF legislators.” Exposing the gaffe in carrying out the damage control exercise, NPCC said “the bizarre statement of NPF legislators at Peren was issued by their own press & media bureau and not by some press reporter/correspondent.” In this regard, NPCC reminded the CMO and NPF that “the people are not fools as they believe to be.” Continuing with its verbal barrage, NPCC said the justification made by
hindi teachers under the aegis of ANHTU Wokha unit CSS Hindi teachers (20122013 Batch) staged a peaceful protest in front of DEO and SDEO offices here from 9am to 3pm on Friday. ANHTU Wokha unit general secretary, Zuchobeni Humtsoe, and CSS Hindi teachers (2012-2013 Batch) c o nve n o r, M h o n t h u n g Lotha, said their demands included immediate release of nine months pending salary along with arrears, monthly payment of salary without any delay, and for the state government to take up their services since they had already completed 5 years in service. The Hindi teachers warned that failure on the part of the government to
NPF spokesman that the legislators’ speeches were quoted out of context since it was spoken in Nagamese, was “absurd and ridiculous.” It also expressed surprise that when chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu had officially invited both JCC and NTAC for free and frank dialogue, the NPF party spokesman on the other hand slammed the civil societies to the extent of calling them violent and uncivilized. This, NPCC said has rather exposed the fault lines within NPF and substantiates the presence of dual power centers functioning in their own way. On the question of dual CM, NPCC justified its statement saying it was the “NPF legislators who thanked Dr. Shürhozelie for magnanimously parting with most of his powers to make T.R. Zeliang as comfortable as he can be.” This implied that “Dr.
Shürhozelie as chief minister has totally abdicated his responsibility which is unbecoming for a person of his stature,” NPCC said. NPCC alleged that “for the love of power, Dr. Shürhozelie has greatly compromised the authority of the CM’s office, a fact which does not augur well for the people who were expecting more matured and astute leadership on his taking over the reins of government.” It further went on to hit out at NPF saying that the insatiable greed and ambition of the party had landed the state in a whole mess. Citing lack of funds, NPCC said government employees particularly teachers were not paid salary for months and state infrastructure particularly the road conditions resembled that of river bed. However, it said NPF had enough funds to venture beyond state borders for political expansion.

AASU stages state-wide protest against NBBUSS GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a statewide satyagraha on Friday in protest against Monday’s ransacking of its local office in Silapathar town of Dhemaji district by a mob, mostly members of Nikhil Bharat Bengali Uddastu Samannay Samiti (NBBUSS). The AASU categorically said that its protests would continue till the arrest of attack mastermind Subodh Biswas, who is the president of NBBUSS. He had allegedly incited a mob through his speech that led to the incident. “Everyone knows who he (Biswas) has links with. We demand his immediate arrest, ban on NBBUSS and action against Dhemaji district magistrate and SP. Until then, we won’t allow the government to live in peace,” warned AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Friday. The incident that day occurred during a procession which was taken out at the end of a rally. The rally was organised by NBBUSS to register protests against al-
leged harassment of Bengalis by authorities on the suspicion that they are illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The AASU, besides other protesting organisations, viewed the incident of vandalism as an attack on the Assamese by the immigrants. The police have so far arrested 30 people but five to six others, including Biswas and NBBUSS state president Sahadev Das, are still at large. The police on Thursday announced a reward of rupees one lakh for information leading to the arrest of Biswas. Lookout notices for Subodh Biswas have been circulated at all important travel points, major airports and railway stations in the country. Biswas is said to be close to the RSS. Photographs of him with some national leaders of the BJP have also been flashed on the screens of local news channels. Meanwhile, Kolkatabased NBBUSS functionary claimed on social media that Biswas was being protected by the Army. Sahay neither confirmed nor denied it.
NBBUSS changes name Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu S a m a n n ay Samiti (NBBUSS), the Nagpurbased Hindu Subodh Biswas Bengali organisation, has changed its name – at least on its Facebook page– to Bengali Samaj Sangathan Samiti. The organisation had allegedly led an attack on AASU on March 6. AASU had called for a 24-hour state-wide bandh on March 10 following the attack on its office at Silapathar in Dhemaji district. NBBUSS, claims to be “the voice of 3.5 crore Bengali Hindus” living in 18 states of the country on its Facebook page. The organisation has been spearheading a movement across the country in support of the Narendra Modi government’s attempt to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis, among others, on religious grounds.

Counting of votes for five states assembly polls today MPs seek more powers for N ew D elhi , M ar 1 0 (AGENCIES): Counting of votes for the high- stakes assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur will take place tomorrow morning with trends expected to be available by 11 a.m.. By 12 noon, a final picture could emerge on who would be the major players in the five states. Election Commission officials said the counting of votes commences at 8 AM and will be completed by late evening. Counting will take place at 157 centres -- Punjab (53), Goa (2), UP (75), Uttarakhand (15) and Manipur (12). According to Election Commission guidelines, halfan-hour after the postal ballots are counted, the process of counting of EVM votes begins. The ‘ballot unit’ is switched on in the presence of senior poll officials and counting agents of candidates and the result command keyed in to get the results per machine. Where a paper
trail audit or ‘voter-verified paper audit trail’ (VVPAT) has been used, the counting agent can call for a count of the paper slips in the drop box attached to the voting machine, but a final count is taken by the returning officer. Exit polls by various news channel yesterday had predicted a hung assembly in the key Hindi heartland state of Uttar Pradesh where BJP would emerge as the single largest party, winning anywhere between 164 and 210 of the 403 seats. Most polls also forecast a close fight between the Congress, which is seeking to return to power in Punjab after a hiatus of 10 years, and Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, making its debut in the assembly polls in the state. They predicted victory for BJP in Uttarakhand, but the saffron party, though likely to lead the table in Goa, was projected to fall short of a majority in the tiny coastal state. Stakes in Uttar Pradesh, politically the most significant
state in India, are high not only for the BJP but also for the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance. Congress is also eying power in Punjab and Goa and hopes to retain Uttarakhand and Manipur. The fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also hoping to form governments in Goa and Punjab -- which would mark its first electoral success outside Delhi. Any electoral success, especially in Uttar Pradesh, will boost the BJP and reaffirm Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s popularity and bold decision of spiking high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 that caused an unprecedented currency crunch in the country. In Uttarakhand, ECI has set 15 counting centres. Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who faced an all-round attack from the BJP and many of his old associates who switched to the saffron camp ahead of the polls in February, exuded confidence of winning the elections again. In Punjab, votes will be
counted at 54 centres. Exit polls by various news channels and survey agencies have indicated a rout for the Akali Dal-BJP alliance in Punjab, with most projecting single-digit seats for the ruling combine. While some surveys put the Congress and AAP in a neck-and-neck finish, one survey each gave a clear majority to the AAP and the Congress respectively. In Goa, votes will be counted at two centres in North and South Goa to declare the winners in 40 seats. A majority of exit polls projections said the ruling BJP will emerge the winner or as single-largest party in the state assembly. In Manipur, counting of votes will be held for 60 seats. In the Congress-ruled state, BJP is expected to win 25 to 35 in the 60-member house, according to some exit vote surveys. However, political pundits and exit poll survey predict a clean sweep for Congress led by O. Ibobi Singh.
district councils of tribals
NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (PTI): Cutting across party lines, Lok Sabha members today pitched for more financial and administrative powers for the autonomous district councils (ADCs) to ensure overall development of tribal regions, most of which are in the Northeast. “The Centre needs to have a relook at the functioning of the ADCs and find out whether they are meeting the aspirations of the people of tribal areas,” said Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury while participating in a discussion on a private member’s bill seeking to amend the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. Moved by Vincent H Pala (Cong), the Bill seeks to raise the number of members of ADCs from 30 to 40 and increase powers of the Councils to deal with land rights and other tribal issues. Autonomous district and regional councils were set under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Chowdhury said these district councils did not have adequate financial resources and suggested
that funds should be made available to them to undertake activities to meet the aspirations of the tribal people. Ram Prasad Sarmah (BJP) demanded that number of members in ADCs should be increased to 40 and more such councils should be set up in Darjeeling in West Bengal. Saugata Roy (TMC) said government must assure tribal people in the Northeast that their culture and identity will be protected. He said the Northeast has the potential to become the next Switzerland. Participating in debate, Congress MP, Gaurav Gogoi said there was a need for a “bridge of dialogue and communication”. He also emphasised on preserving the languages of the Northeast by archiving them. Nishikant Dubey said the district councils of the NE have become ‘elite clubs’, while Rameswar Teli (BJP) highlighted issue of under-development of NE region. K Y M C

Three-tier security for counting in Manipur
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Mar 10: Three-tier security arrangements have been put in place for the counting of votes Saturday for 60 assembly seats in Manipur. Central para-military forces have been deployed inside the counting centres, state police force in the outer circle and armed forces from other states deployed around the centres to prevent the entry of any unauthorized persons, Manipur CEO Vivek Kumar Dewangan said Friday.“Counting of votes will start at 8 in the morning. Counting of ballots will also take place simultaneously,” he said. Results of all seats are expected by evening. Elections to 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly was held at two phases amidst sporadic violence incidents at some polling
stations. After re-poll was conducted in 34 polling stations spread over eight assembly constituencies where polling was conducted in the first phase on March 10, fresh poll was held at 28 more polling stations in the constituencies that went on poll in the second phase, on March 8. Also, on Friday while re-poll was underway, firing was reported at places nearby polling stations at five places in Senapati and Ukhrul districts. However, according to CEO, the incident did not disturb the polling processes. He further added that whether re-poll will held at these polling stations will be decided only after the records of the polling process is examined. The entire poll processes were recorded using smart phones, he asserted. He said above 90% turnout
was recorded in almost all the 28 polling stations, where fresh re-poll was held. Giving some highlights of the polls, the CEO said that air ambulance was used besides airlifting of poll personnel and EVMs of 129 polling stations which include 24 polling stations in the first phase and 105 in the second phase. The expenditure in conducting the 11th Manipur Assembly elections has been estimated at Rs 40 crore, CEO added. Bodos stage hunger strike; warn of economic blockade
Mnp elections 2017: A village that voted thrice in seven days I mphal , M a r 1 0 (Agencies): Twenty eight polling stations of the second phase are going for repolling today, all in remote areas in the hills where electoral malpractices were noticed by the Election Commission (EC). Among many interesting events in the state, one polling station in the remote Saikul constituency in the newly created Kangpokpi district saw voting thrice this season, reported nelive. Saikul, 60km away from Imphal, has 11 candidates in the fray - highest for any constituency in this poll. This tribal-reserved seat is dominated by the Kuki tribe, and went to polls on March 4 in the first phase. “It is a crucial seat and we had ensured a tight security cover yet we found some malpractices and ordered a repoll,” Manipur’s Chief Electoral officer VK Dewangan told NDTV. The repolling took place yesterday, but the BJP again filed a complaint against the Congress candidate for
booth capturing and the EC after scrutiny ordered another repoll. About 1,000 voters are voting for the third time today. “People from remote areas have actively participated in the polls. The political parties are locked in a fierce battle in Saikul which has many heavyweight candidates this time,” said local journalist Kaybie Chongloi from Kangpokpi. The EC had directed that the polling was to be held in the Saikul police station and not in the polling booth that was allegedly ‘rigged’ twice. The Manipur assembly election 2017 has been unique in many ways. From peaceful polling amid a four-month long economic blockade, the BJP’s surge as a formidable opponent in this Congress stronghold to activist Irom Sharmila’s foray into politics and a high voter turnout in the two-phased polls for the 60member assembly, Manipur is experiencing an exciting moment.

BJP will form govt in Tripura in 2018: CM Sonowal Agartala, Mar 10 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, a wave of forming BJP governments started in the North East and Tripura will be a part of it in 2018. “BJP has formed governments in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. It will also form a government in Manipur after the election results are out tomorrow. “A wave of forming BJP governments has started in the North-East after Modiji became the Prime Minister. Tripura will also follow the way in the 2018 Assembly elections,” Sonowal said while addressing a public gathering here. The Tripura unit of BJP organised the gathering to press for a CBI inquiry into the murder of its leader Chanmohan Tripura allegedly by activists of the ruling CPI-M at Gandacherra in Dhalai district in December last year. Stating that Tripura Government was “corrupt and inefficient”, Sonowal said despite being a power surplus state, it could not woo investment. “They have no political will. Though very less power is generated in Assam, yet the government has recently brought investments worth Rs 10,000 crore. Despite being a resourceful state, Tripura remains backward because the Left has no will to work and deliver the good to the people,” he said.
Mandal. Angam blamed NSCN (I-M) cadres behind the arson. None of the family members were present when the incident took place at Thursday midnight. According to Angam, NSCN (I-M) threatened the villagers of Chandel Assembly constituency to cast vote in favour of an Independent candidate.

IMPHAL, Mar 10: Manipur Congress Friday rejected the exit poll results of various agencies while BJP was confident of forming next government by claiming that the party will emerge out as a single largest party. President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) TN Haokip rejected rejecting exit polls results and stated that similar results also predicted in the state assembly elections in 2012. However, the prediction turned out to be totally false and Congress went on to 42 seats, where Ibobi led Congress government returned to power again for third consecutive term. “The exit poll will not be true. Congress will get majority again to form the government again,” a confident Haokip told a local news channel. He added, “We are expecting winning in around 40 seats. If not so, still we will get enough seats to form a majority government again.” He mocked the exit poll results and said “the survey was done by sitting in a hotel and contacting people over phones, not based on the ground reality.” On the other hand, Manipur BJP party claimed that it will emerge as the single largest party after the election results was out. BJP Manipur general secretary and sitting MLA Th Bishorjit said that the party is expected to win over 25 to 30 seats and the party will form government with the supports of other like-minded parties. He further said that the one who was elected as party’s legislator leader by party Central leaders will be the chief minister.

Under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, attachment orders against Mallya have been issued by ED (Enforcement Directorate). Assets worth Rs. 8,040 crore were attached,” Jaitley said. “I had also an opportunity during my recent visit to discuss the issue with concerned authorities, including my counterpart,” he said. Chinese envoy urges Indian media for ‘more balanced way’ coverage New Delhi, Mar 10 (IANS): China’s envoy to India, Luo Zhaohui, has urged the Indian media to report on India-China relations in a “more balanced way”, while also praising the media for helping foster bilateral ties. Addressing a gathering of the Indian media invited for a Holi reception at the Chinese embassy here on Thursday evening, Ambassador Luo said: “I humbly request the media here to report on China-India relations in a more balanced way.” Luo said in the six months since his posting as envoy, he has been very impressed by the “big progress of the media” in India compared to when he was in the country 28 years ago. He said the media in India has developed very fast, and the traditional media, social media and the 24-hour TV with a lot of breaking news, shows there is an “information explosion, and freedom of speech in India”. With the media
Luo Zhaohui also covering foreign affairs news shows that India is an open society, integrated deeply with the world. “Thirdly, India media pays more attention to China and China-India relations. It promotes better understanding between our two peoples, and also helps China to understand Indian perspectives. I appreciate what you have done to bridge China-India interactions and friendship. As a diplomat and reader, I read almost 10 newspapers and watch TV programmes and get a lot of valuable information every day,” the envoy said, according
to a statement from the Chinese embassy. He then requested the Indian media for a “more balanced” coverage of the bilateral ties and for more coverage on news related to China. His comments come as the Indian media has focused on Beijing repeatedly blocking the move to slap a UN ban on Jaish-eMohamed chief Masood Azhar, who India blames for the Uri and Pathankot terror attacks, and also for styming India’s bid for the Nuclear Suppliers Group membership. Speaking on his country’s progress, the envoy said: “Last year China’s economy has registered a slower but stable performance. The economic growth scored 6.7 per cent and the GDP totalled 11 trillion USD and the GDP per capita reached 8,000 USD. This year we set a target of around 6.5 per cent. India’s GDP growth last year is estimated at 7.1 per cent. China and India are the fastest growing economies.”

In September last year, Prime Minister Modi’s image was used in front page newspaper advertisements with the message “Jio is dedicated to realising our Prime Minister’s Digital India vision for 1.2 billion Indians”. After the central government announced the demonetisation decision in November last year, Paytm welcoming the move featured Modi in its advertisements.

Both incidences triggered political controversy. The Department of Consumer Affairs had sought clarification for using the photograph of the Prime Minister in their respective full page advertisements contravening the prior permission to be sought under ‘The Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950’. The law, however, only envisages a
fine of Rs 500 for the illegal use of official names or images or emblems. The Minister said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to the print medium to check the permission from the competent authority before issuing any advertisement, wherein the Emblem and the Names specified under the Act are mentioned.

New Delhi, Mar 10 (/ AGENCIES/IANS): After numerous adjournments, the Supreme Court on Thursday fast-tracked the proceedings against absconder industrialist Vijay Mallya and reserved its order on contempt proceeding against him for allegedly diverting 40 million US$ to his children’s account in foreign banks in violation of court order. A bench of Justice A K Goel and U U Lalit reserved its order on whether Mallya was guilty of contempt or not and what further action should be taken to bring back the money. The court concluded the proceeding after holding hearing for three and half hours during which Centre contended that Mallya was mocking at Indian system after managing to flee away. It said that government was holding talks with the UK authorities to deport him. It is exactly one year ago when the apex court had started proceeding against Mallya and had issued notice to him on March 8, 2016 on a plea of consortium of banks led by SBI for recovery of about Rs 9,000 crore which Mallya and his companies owed to them. He, however, managed to flee the country days before SC took up the case against him. Pleading the court to direct Mallya to bring back 40 million US$, which he received from Diageo, Attorney General told the bench that Mallya had breached SC order and his refusal to bring back the money had agreviated his breach and he should be directed to appear personally before court. “He has taken court for ride and we are taking action to bring him back. He has not made a honest disclosure regarding 40 million USD. We dont know how to get back the money but majesty of court is very important and he must abide by court’s order, “ Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said. The court, however, raised question on how its order, if it was passed against Mallya, would be executed as he was living in UK. It asked attorney general to provide modalities under which its order

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 94 Dimapur, Saturday, March 11, 2017
Tinkering with the future
S
ince nearly three decades back, there has been hue and cry over lack of employment opportunities for the ‘educated unemployed’ in Nagaland but efforts to reduce the rising number of unemployed hasn’t been successful. In other words, the efforts appear to be like trying too water the desert with a tiny drop of water. Though this illustration may seem like a gross exaggeration. The number of unemployed officially may be around fifty thousand or so but unofficially and more logically, there are around two lakh unemployed that include registered, unregistered, graduates, undergraduates and school drop outs. The issues that had been raised by the government employees and students etc bear mute testimony to the deep rooted syndrome that afflicts the issue of employment. Today, the specter of unemployment has reached a very critical stage and the longer it takes, the more would join the ranks and this could result in widespread frustration. The future of the people and the state cannot be brushed under the carpet. Those who have put in many years of study and some of who have even undergone certain specialized studies must be given an opportunity. Be that as it may, the statistics again indicate without much doubt about the level of unemployment in the state. It will not be an easy task for those engaged in conducting where even the least of differences could make or break someone’s fortune. For instance, there were serious( and very genuine) accusations that there were scores(the number is left to one’s imagination) of government servants possessing fake degrees and certificates. The probe into this humongous scam was unearthed and many identified but so far the ends of justice was yet to be met owing to political interference and pressure. There was also the serious accusation of age tampering by many serving government servants. Such allegations are serious and demand a thorough probe by a competent and independent agency so that the cheats are unmasked and thrown out of job and their places given to deserving and meritorious candidates. The other issue that has been heard quite often pertained to backdoor appointments which was raised by the NSF over a decade ago and recently echoed by ACAUT Nagaland. This issue crops up now and then and recedes to the background without evidence of the scam being tackled and those responsible being booked. In other states, if there was any issue regarding backdoor appointment, there would have been a riot throughout the state with the opposition calling for a statewide agitation and possibly, even forcing the government to force ministers in-charge to resign. It does not happen in Nagaland but that does not mean that people would continue to remain passive forever. Those organizations that have been crying hoarse over the plight of the unemployed as well as the system of selections, have not been consistently vocal about the who backdoor appointment issue. The other issue of ‘educated’ is also left to interpretation since many or most graduates are hardly even able to write a decent application. So much so that the degrees earned in whatever way, do not seem to even suggest that the holders are capable of learning. The policies- whether on employment or quality education- need a serious review if progress is to be sustained by growth.

Being an Example of His Message
Preach the word! —2 Timothy 4:2 We are not saved only to be instruments for God, but to be His sons and daughters. He does not turn us into spiritual agents but into spiritual messengers, and the message must be a part of us. The Son of God was His own message— “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). As His disciples, our lives must be a holy example of the reality of our message. Even the natural heart of the unsaved will serve if called upon to do so, but it takes a heart broken by conviction of sin, baptized by the Holy Spirit, and crushed into submission to God’s purpose to make a person’s life a holy example of God’s message. There is a difference between giving a testimony and preaching. A preacher is someone who has received the call of God and is determined to use all his energy to proclaim God’s truth. God takes us beyond our own aspirations and ideas for our lives, and molds and shapes us for His purpose, just as He worked in the disciples’ lives after Pentecost. The purpose of Pentecost was not to teach the disciples something, but to make them the incarnation of what they preached so that they would literally become God’s message in the flesh. “…you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). Allow God to have complete liberty in your life when you speak. Before God’s message can liberate other people, His liberation must first be real in you. Gather your material carefully, and then allow God to “set your words on fire” for His glory.

Post-mortem
Election Regale in Manipur– reflecting a societal point M any do not like the churns of elections, even those dealing the subject. It is often considered a pattern run by those who are for it and for them alone. Other professions and those disliking it tend to stay away even during voting, apparently due to election’s volatile form, however powerful it gives. Are elections really corrupt? Which type of people should take part in it? Certainly it’s not corrupt per se. It is only by people who fail in the field bears bad testimony. Politics has its spur which is inevitable; it doesn’t depart from the heaves we so want to breathe in life. It is an element to governing peoples’ life which requires serious commitment and devotion like any other profession. Election is an agent of politics trying to engage people, their interests and outlook of the world. Civilized societies had undergone similar spate of contests that our side faces now, although we are still held far behind from these societies who exercise freedom according to values and respect. “Money and force” has no scope for them to win election, because to them politics has tall claims of humanity and commitment. Our part of the world sadly
W
rolls into a disturbing mess, waxing paradoxical scenes and hatred. Politics at best is the art of the possible. It allows clear political contestations and conduct, whereby judgment is taken on ‘fairness’ and values of the people. This is the kind of model which democracy allows people to acquire their course of freedom, to think one. The atmosphere is wide loose as well as promising. Interestingly today, many in our society talk on this buzzword politics in their ‘aimed coffers’ without else know the braid of it. Money does not draw all practices no doubt. There are but those run in the lure of blind politicking and much daring to it for money. I have had the personal witness of it recently, the shameful part of this ill in our land, our own people. There are yet indeed, good motives doing their part – ‘my vote for truth’ campaign, selfless take on politics with vision, and genuine involvements around the same plank of connecting people. Many of the interview clips on the Hill candidates I listened online are echoed excellently on the recently concluded Manipur elections scheduled on March 4 and 8, 2017. Thanks to Indigenous Voice for gar-
nering such values into our society. But votes for what and for whom, has proven many times futile due to not standing by it. Politicians must reconsider their stake very seriously, let alone followers and voters. The price of damage and failure is more than anyone of us wants to pay, as put by Kofi Annan. And our scuffle today would not easily heal the scars unless taken first to cleanour house. In a significant record of democratic elections, the recent one of the United States took jibe over incorrect maneuvers in media and social circles which America does not regard in its pride of values. Interestingly, the republican won the presidential election popularly on factors over wrong projections and overrated strength by the democrats. Apart from the conservative claims of the republican policies, many Americans did not want their democratic values to be on wrong linesand monopoly. CNN commentator quotes views of voters saying the people didn’t want to be humiliated that way through regulated views, hence the citizen mindscape increased against the democrats. It went to reiterate that the force of democracy is with the ordi-
nary people, and that they would only decide their own political fate. The choice of democracy in our political spectrum misses almost all the values prevalent in the societies referred during elections. Freedom to politics, as generally followed in any democracy, has miserably seen our society in blatant negligence to public interests and demand. Democracy has for clear reasons departed from the bastion of the public. Good governance for one, should anticipate the resilience of democracy, in so far as the people would exercise freedom to restrain any force jeopardizing their rights and security. However, democracy must be invested on correct application of the values in society. It is not a necessary triumph of majoritarian politics. The ideology would commensurate with patterns and interests of the people in the long run. Although democracy is regarded to the best desired form of government in the modern society, it suffers defeat during elections onsuch assessment of the people forming the polity. Ugly part of democracy also evolves when individual liberties manifest towards individualistic interests. Considering these
to the election mode which has tremendous impact and modernity over the age. Open platform of debate now operates in large parts of India during elections, which is anticipated by all. Voters here don’t expect money from candidates but are eager to hear from candidates the issues and programme ahead. The system has been successful in conforming to values of choosing a leader on actual assessment point. On account of these understandings of democracy and politics, though limited, and which has included Naga’s situation, I reasonably see the current political formula of our actors a disdain record. With election sizzles grappling our homes in Manipur, I humbly feel concerned and thus urge our folks that anything of violence and ‘force’ is to discard; anything of peace and respect welcome. Shall we not envy our society on respectable and honorable ground? Threats and ploy in tune with ‘election regale’ only shows how much one place on the wrong lane of politics. Look to a world so wide and clear, lest we all rest with elections under India’s ‘brute state’. Roviso Marza, Political Science Researcher, University of Delhi.
You will get what you deserve NOT what you desire!
e often come across people complaining that they are not getting what they want in life. They don’t get; their dream job, desired wife, enough salary and so on. Failing to achieve or get what they want, often people complain that god is not kind hearted and is not favorable to them. But, the philosophers claim that, “One will get what one deserves but, NOT what one desires” in life. God, the creator of so many worlds - can’t he fill your little house with peace? your little pocket with enough money?; your little heart with joy?. Is it not possible for the GOD ? Or is the ‘god’ is against you..? Nay – that is not the case. After all we are all the children of the ‘god’ he has no enmity toward us. God is not angry over anyone in the world. The father in a family will give whatever his children deserve. Can a
father arrange marriage for his child of 5 years, even if the child is begging for..? Can the same father buy a small toy for his lad of 19 years..? A father will not give his little child one million dollars even if the child is asking for. i.e., the father bestows onto his children what they deserve but, not what they desire. He knows what to give onto his dear children even though they don’t ask for. If this is the situation, then how do you expect the ‘god’ the almighty to bestow onto you what you don’t deserve? God definitely gives you, just what you deserve not all you want or desire. After all we are the children of ‘god’, he knows well what to give us and what not to give us. Just by crying before the ‘God’ he can’t bestow onto you all you beg for. But, he could give you certain things if you ask the god repeatedly which he didn’t give you at the first moment. This is be-
cause, you were not matured enough at the first moment and he intentionally delayed to give you the ‘boon’ and during the delay, he might have given you the needed maturity before giving you ‘what you begged for’. But, in many cases ‘god’ might not bless you with what you ‘desire’ though you beg the god repeatedly. This is because; ‘god’ wants to teach you a lesson, keeping you in distress; in troubles; in severe pains and problems – that’s all. Perhaps, that might be the only way possible to teach you that particular lesson and there might not be other ways possible. So, the ‘god’ had chosen that particular way and kept you in the particular misery. Otherwise ‘god’ wouldn’t give you the misery you are facing. All the beings, we came to the world, only to get maturity, to enlightenment. This can’t come unless the
‘soul’ faces myriad kinds of troubles and pleasures. Just like the ‘lightening’ coming out of the dark clouds, knowing comes out of ‘miseries’ and ‘troubles’. There is no other way around. In the course of evolution, each person has gone through different paths of life and has acquired different kinds or levels of maturity. But, there are certain doors or locks unopened in each and every individual. In order to open these closed doors, ‘god’ keeps each person in a different type of problem, this is why each person has a different problem to solve in life, like the famous adage goes, ‘that that man, that that problem’. Problems are meant to make you more mature but, NOT to make you weep or cry. In solving the problems, in facing the difficulties, in suffering – the ‘soul’ gets maturity. So, ‘god’ gives each person a different kind

aspects of democratic operation in society, democracy would redeem its long standing goals through agents and institutes responding sincerely to the enormous demands of the people. Leaders enjoying democratic mandate of the people must realize that the powers of democracy resonate on societal values and change, which people regularly attach in their normal ventures. Our society is no exception to the findings of democracy drawn from various societal lessons, because elections offer good avenues to reflect societal polity and values. For Nagas, when we are taken by a chunk of political movement withanguished frontiers, the lot of elections across the business has spawned an added importance to question. More importantly, the helm of power being employed by certain groups to curb free and fair poll would only defeat the organizational objectives of entering electoral politics. The larger scope behind ideal elections cannot be ruled out in our society even while there are justified election maneuvers and plans done exclusively. It is to not think pragmatic over a game of elections in our own world frame while at the same time subscribe
hat is the definition of happiness? Why do some people seem to have the secret to happiness, while others struggle to gain any satisfaction? These are some basic but effective ideas that you can use to cultivate inner happiness and build an incredible life. Simplicity The route to happiness isn’t difficult. Happiness is not dependent on amassing a certain amount of fame or wealth; happiness is not dependent on reaching a certain social pecking order. If we are always striving after something bigger and better, happiness will remain elusive. Happiness is found in the present moment, not some dreamed of golden future. We need to learn the art of being content with our current situation. Our current life may be far from perfect; but, if we can detach from negative situations and appreciate the value of simplicity happiness becomes easier to cultivate. Live in the Heart If we only live in the mind we look at every situation with our critical judgmental mind, as a consequence, we will inevitably find innumerable faults with the world and with other people. When we are constantly criticising others we can find neither peace nor happiness. However, if we live more in the heart we have a more tolerant, accepting
attitude towards others. The heart’s qualities are acceptance and oneness. Children find it is easy to see happiness in the most ordinary situation because they are more in the heart. At times we need to distance the critical mind and take a simpler, childlike view of life. C o n t r o l O ve r Yo u r Thoughts When we feel like helpless victims of our own negative thought streams — how can we hope to be happy? To cultivate happiness we need to cultivate positive thoughts. This means stopping negative thoughts and replacing them with good, inspiring thoughts. Avoiding negative thoughts requires practice. Meditation and concentration exercises can help us control our thoughts. But sometimes the best way to prevent negative thoughts is to concentrate on something positive. It’s your own thoughts that take you to heaven or hell, so be very careful with what is allowed into your mind. Gratitude If we show no appreciation for others and for life, we create a narcissistic outlook. We focus excessively on our sense of self and ego. When we offer gratitude for small things in life, it helps us feel a broader identity and awareness; our consciousness expands and we bring to the fore our own
positive qualities. Gratitude has tremendous power; if it is sincere and heartfelt it makes a big difference to our outlook on life. Gratitude helps bring to the fore a sincerely positive attitude to life. Active Happiness is easily found in usefully serving others. Activity doesn’t mean filling up our lives with as many activities as possible — this only leads to a sense of self-importance and stress as we struggle to do several things at once. But, if we are calmly active we find a sense of purpose in life; this sense of purpose and satisfaction helps cultivate an inner sense of satisfaction. Physical Exercise When you take regular physical exercise you will feel many benefits. Firstly, when we look after our body we are less prone to lethargy and illness. Through developing our fitness we gain an increased sense of self esteem; this is because we are taking active steps for our self improvement. Increasing our fitness also enables an increased sense of mental well being; exercise helps rid the mind of many useless thoughts. It is important to have the right attitude to exercise, don’t think of school P.E. lessons in the cold rain; getting fit doesn’t have to be torture — you can easily find a sport or some exercise that is enjoyable and sociable. Tejvan Pettinger
of problems or pain to make them perfect. This is why all are not having the same problem in life and pleasure too. A matured person will get some kind of problem which an immature person will not get and vice versa. This is because the second kind of problem is of no use to the ‘mature’ person and the like and the mature person might have gone through the problem long before that an immature person might be facing at present. God is not an idiot. He definitely knows what to do and what not to do! He knows; when, what, where, how and how much to give you – that is what you deserve. God will not make mistakes as he is the omniscient. God gives you what you deserve and NOT what you desire – just to make you more and more mature. God wants to take you to the
paradise. Paradise is a place of ‘matured people’. So, in order to make you mature ‘god’ gives you puzzles and problems to ‘sharpen your soul’ but, NOT to make you weep for sure. So, if you get problems in life, accept them whole heartedly knowing that it is meant only for your good. The moment you accept the problems and miseries that come to you – they will naturally subside or at least they will not pain you much. If you know how to solve a riddle then it will not puzzle you. So, if you know why ‘god’ gives you all kinds of problems – then the problems will not make you suffer and you could pass the life peacefully. Unless we face all sorts of problems we will not get the maturity. Remember that, “unless a rock is hit by the chisel, the statue is not out!” Albert

Sir,
Sharing opinions
We all being on board of the same vehicle, sharing opinions with one another is necessary and it is what I encourage anybody to venture to do so. Expressing opinions out of tank of thought is precious whatever it may be. It may be a matter of pointing out my shortcoming or failure or it may be for my encouragement but all are for my own benefit. I have confidence on the leaders in whatever field. Several times, I outrightly declined myself to get involved in political discussion saying,” I do not know politics, don’t invite me for any political discussion, I am all for peace only.” What is honest, sincere, realistic, selfless and true love for the people; it is pure and will be according to the will of God. If the conviction is pure, there is no question to get discouraged or daunted. Anything which is against the conscience is vanity so stand for the truth and the truth only so that unnecessary creation of problems may be avoided. Make use of the opportunity God has graciously given to us to mend, to heal, to save and to console the people as the instruments of God. If you are really a channel of peace, the current problems you have been undergoing are the blessing in disguise for you. Suohie Mhasi

Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): Rajya Sabha on Friday passed a Bill to amend a 49-year-old law to guard against claims of succession or transfer of properties left by people who migrated to Pakistan and China, amid a walkout by the entire Opposition. The Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2016, which amends the Enemy Property Act, 1968, was passed by voice vote in the Rajya Sabha despite the opposition demanding deferring of the debate on the draft legislation for a threadbare deliberation next week. The m ea sure wa s passed by the Lok Sabha in March last year. After this, the Rajya Sabha had sent it to a select committee, following whose recommendations, the government had moved a number of amendments to it. After the amended bill
was passed by a voice vote by the Rajya Sabha today, it was returned to the Lok Sabha for final passage just before it was adjourned for the day. Earlier when the bill was taken up in the Upper House for consideration and passage, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said “many senior members including the Leader of Opposition are not present in the House for a variety of reasons. Therefore the bill should be taken up for discussion and passage on the next working day.” Ramesh’s views were echoed by other members including Javed Ali Khan (SP) and Sukhendu Shekhar Roy (AITC) who also sought taking up the bill for discussion next week. However, the government decided to take up the bill for discussion today itself and later got it passed by a voice vote after the
entire opposition, angered over the government’s insistence, walked out of the House. Explaining the rationale for urgency to get the bill passed, Finance Minister and Leader of the House Arun Jaitely said the ordinance effecting the amendments in the Act would lapse on March 14, 2017 and this was a security issue also. Elaborating on the measure, he said it was a principle that government should not allow commercial interests or properties of an enemy country or its citizens. Jaitley said the right of the enemy property should vest in the Government of India and not in the heirs of the citizens of the enemy countries. Despite repeated requests by opposition members, the government took up the bill, which was passed after a brief discussion in the absence of any opposition member. The government was so determined to pass the bill today that over half dozen ministers were present in the House to ensure its smooth sail. Home Minister Rajnath Singh Minister, who was supposed to reply to the debate on the bill, did not say much observing that the Leader of the House has already explained about it in detail and there was no need for his explanation.
New Delhi, Mar 10 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea for quashing a government notification to confer Padma Vibhushan (PV) in 2016 on late Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries Ltd. A bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar dismissed the plea for withdrawal of the prestigious honour to the noted industrialist. “In his time, he was known as the biggest industrialist of the country. You are not to decide on who should get the Padma Vibhushan. If they give it to you, we can’t question,” the bench observed. In May 2016, the Delhi High Court had dismissed the plea, saying “no public interest was involved” in the petition and it was filed just to “malign” a person. In the appeal against the High Court order, lawyer P.C. Srivastava had sought a direction to Kokilaben Ambani, widow of Dhirubhai, to return the “sanad” (certificate) and medallion of Padma Vibhushan which she had received on behalf of her late husband. Dhirubhai Ambani was conferred Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour, posthumously for his “exceptional and distinguished” service to trade and industry. The petitioner alleged that Dhirubhai had not “rendered any exceptional and distinguished service” for which he was given the award.
Over 100 military personnel commit suicide every year NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): The armed forces continue to lose around 100 personnel to suicides every year despite successive governments holding that several measures have been taken to reduce the stress among soldiers. As many as 125 military personnel took the extreme step to end their lives in 2016. Replying to question in Lok Sabha on Friday, minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre said 101 soldiers, 19 airmen and five sailors committed suicide last year, with another three
cases of fratricide (to kill a fellow soldier or superior) being reported from the three Services. This year, 13 Army jawans have already committed suicide, while two such cases have been reported from the IAF. Soldiers posted in farflung areas often undergo tremendous mental stress for not being able to take care of the problems being faced by their families back home, which could range from property disputes and harassment by anti-social elements to financial and marital problems, as was earlier reported by TOI.
Prolonged deployment in counter-insurgency operations in J&K and Northeast also takes a toll on the physical endurance and mental health of soldiers. All this is also compounded by poor salaries, lack of basic amenities, denial of leave and ineffectual officer leadership. Bhamre, on his part, stressed the government had taken various measures to prevent such incidents. “These include improvement in living and working conditions through provision of better infrastructure and facilities; additional
family accommodation; liberalised leave policy; establishing grievance redressal mechanism; conduct of yoga and meditation as part of the unit routine etc,” he said. “A large number of officers have been trained as counsellors to provide counselling to defence personnel and their families. Civilian psychological counsellors have also been employed to provide mental health services. Psychologists also visit units and formations from time to time to carry out counselling, individually and at times in groups,” he added.
New Delhi, Mar 10 (IANS): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said police is probing the death of Lance Naik Roy Mathew, who was found dead in an army barrack days after he featured in a sting video criticizing the ‘Sahayak’ system in the army. Responding to questions about the mysterious death of the soldier in Lok Sabha, the Defence Minister termed it an “isolated incident” and added that consultations are on over the Sahayak system. “It (Naik’s case) was an isolated incident. Police is carrying out an independent probe.” He however refused to make any further comments on the incident. “I don’t want to make any comment on it as it would be prejudicial to say anything at this stage,”

he said. Lance Naik Roy Mathew was found dead in a barrack in Maharashtra’s Devlali Cantonment on March 3. The Minister said that consultations are on over the Sahayak system, which came into focus recently after a few soldiers took to social media to air their grievances over the buddy system in the army. “We are in consultation with all concerned and an appropriate mechanism would be worked out soon,” Parrikar said.
NEW DELHI, MAR 10 (PTI): In an unprecedented order, the Supreme Court on Friday issued bailable warrants against serving Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan to ensure his presence before it on March 31 in a contempt case. Justice Karnan goes down in the Indian judicial history as the first serving High Court judge against whom an arrest warrant has been issued by the apex court in a contempt case. A seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar took strong note of Justice Karnan’s non-appearance despite being served with the contempt notice and asked the Director General of West Bengal Police to execute the warrants on the judge to ensure his presence at 10.30 AM on March 31. The court said it would “appreciate” if the bailable warrants are served on Justice Karnan by the DGP. “Notice of this petition has been duly served. Despite service, wherein the personal presence of Shri Justice C S Karnan, in this Court, was imperative, he has neither entered appearance in person, nor through counsel,” the bench, also
comprising Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur, P C Ghose and Kurian Joseph, said. “In view of the above, there is no other alternative but to seek the presence of Shri Justice C S Karnan by issuing bailable warrants. Ordered accordingly. Bailable warrants, in the sum of Rs 10,000, in the nature of a personal bond, to the satisfaction of the arresting officer, be issued, to ensure the presence of Shri Justice C S Karnan, in this Court, on March 31 at 10.30 A.M,” it said. The bench during a 15-minute-long hearing that took place in the packed CJI’s courtroom referred to Justice Karnan’s fax message sent to the apex court registry on March 8 seeking a meeting with the CJI to discuss “certain administrative issues”. It said the message “primarily seem to reflect the allegations levelled by him against certain named judges. The above fax message, dated March 8, cannot be considered as a response of Justice C S Karnan, either to the contempt petition, or to the notice served

the matter to Parliament, contending that contempt proceedings were “not sustainable”. “Before obtaining any explanation from me, I wish to state that the courts have no power to enforce punishment against a sitting judge of the High Court. The said order does not conform to logic, therefore it is not suitable for execution,” he had said in the letter. During the last hearing, senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the Registrar General of the Madras HC, had said the High Court judges needed protection from Karnan’s verbal abuse and wild charges. He had said the judge concerned had levelled malicious rape charges against a sitting Madras High Court judge. Justice Karnan was transferred from the Madras HC to the Calcutta HC for his alleged contemptuous conduct. He had on February 15, 2016 stayed his transfer order after the apex court asked the Chief Justice of Madras High Court not to assign any judicial work to him.

upon him.” At the outset, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that Justice Karnan had defied the Supreme Court order and the apex court rules on contempt provide for issuance of bailable and non-bailable warrants against a contemnor to ensure his presence. After the alleged open contemptuous letters written by Justice Kar nan against the Madras HC Chief Justice, addressed to the CJI, Prime Minister and others, the court had initiated proceedings against him. The apex court had on February 8 asked Justice Karnan to appear in person and explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him. It had restrained him from undertaking judicial and administrative work. However, Justice Karnan did not appear before the apex court on February 13 also. On February 10, Justice Karnan had written a letter to the apex court in which he had reportedly played the Dalit card asking the Supreme Court to refer

Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre, responding to the question earlier, said there were a few incidents of complaints by jawans, but it did not reflect the collective mood of the soldiers. “There are various mechanism to address the grievances of jawans, that include regular holding of ‘Sainik Sammelan’ where the soldiers can raise their problems,” Bhamre informed the House. Earlier this week, another soldier - Sep Sindhav Jogidas Lakhubhai of the Army Medical Corps - took to social media to attack the ‘batman’ or Sahayak system in the Army. Earlier, Lance Naik Yagya Pratap had posted a video over the same issue. The Army has said both the soldiers were never assigned any Sahayak roles.

(From P-1) All Nagaland Hindi Teachers Union (ANHTU) has reiterated its appeal to the state government to fulfil its demands and also take up the matter on priority. In a joint press release, ANHTU president, Rometo Sema, and CSS convenor, Ilika K Aye, expressed dismay at the government’s “indifferent attitude” and step-motherly treatment meted out to the Hindi teachers. The signatories cautioned the state government that failure to fulfil their demands within stipulated time would compel the members to launch phase-III agitation on March 15, 2017. In this regard, the union has informed all its members to reach on March 14, saying attendance would be taken and strict disciplinary action would be taken against absentees. Meanwhile, the union has expressed gratitude to all its members, associations and individuals who extended support during the two phases of agitation. Further, members have also been informed to observe fasting on March12 from 6am to 12 noon in their respective places.

(PTI): Gold prices saw a sharp downturn Friday, plunging as much as Rs 400 to an over 2-month low of Rs 28,850 per 10 grams, hurt by a sluggish overseas trend and lower demand from jewellers. Silver also slipped below the Rs 41,000-mark by falling Rs 525 to Rs 40,975 per kg on reduced off take by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said that other than the weakness in demand, a higher probability of a rate hike by the US Federal Reserve next week and a general diminishing of appeal for precious metals as a safe haven hit gold hard. Globally, the yellow metal fell 0.4 percent to USD 1,196.24 an ounce, the lowest since January 31 in Singapore. (I) Am ready to talk settlement on fair basis,” Mallya tweeted. He said: “Wish the Supreme Court would intervene and put an end to all this by directing banks and us to negotiate and settle. Court formally ousts S. Korea’s president
FILE - In this Feb. 25, 2013 file photo, S. Korea’s new President Park Geun-hye takes an oath during her inauguration ceremony in Seoul, South Korea.
efits of protecting the constitution that can be earned by dismissing the defendant are overwhelmingly big. Hereupon, in a unanimous decision by the court panel, we issue a verdict: We dismiss the defendant, President Park Geun-hye.” Lee accused Park of colluding with her longtime confidante and private citizen Choi Soon-sil to extort tens of millions of dollars from businesses and letting Choi meddle in state affairs and receive and look at documents with state secrets. Those are the allegations that prosecutors have already raised, but Park has refused to undergo any questioning, citing a law that gives a sitting leader immunity from prosecution. It is not clear when prosecutors will try to interview with her. Park won’t vacate the presidential Blue House today as her aides are preparing for her return to her private home in southern Seoul, according to the Blue House. Park wasn’t planning any statement today, it said. South Korea must now
hold an election within two months to choose Park’s successor. Liberal Moon Jae-in, who lost to Park in the 2012 election, currently enjoys a comfortable lead in opinion surveys.
2 dead in protests
South Korean police say a second person has died in protests against a court’s decision to remove President Park Geun-hye from office. Police had no other details about the death on Friday. Hospital official earlier said that another person, a man in his 70s, died from head wounds after falling from a police bus in front of the Constitutional Court after it ruled to oust Park. The official said the man, believed to be a Park supporter, was bleeding heavily when he arrived at the office and died at around 13:50. Thousands of Park’s supporters angrily reacted to the verdict, shouting and hitting police officers with flag poles and climbing on buses the police used to create a perimeter protecting the court.
Pak adopts Hindu marriage law
ISLAMABAD, MAR 10 (IANS): The Pakistani parliament has adopted the landmark Hindu Marriage Law to regulate the community’s marriages in the country. The Hindu Marriage Bill, unanimously passed on Thursday, will be the first personal law to regulate marriages in the Hindu community living in Pakistan, Dawn online reported. Minister for Human Rights Kamran Michael presented the bill, which was approved by the Senate in February, in the National Assembly. It now needs President Mamnoon Hussain’s signature to become a law. According to Michael, it was a constitutional obligation to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of minorities and to protect the marriage, the family, the mother and the child. “There was no law to regulate the registration of Hindu marriages and ancillary matters thereto”, he said.
M O S C OW, M A R 1 0 (IANS): Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has urged Israel to focus on modern world affairs, after the visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to an ancient legend of an Iranian forefathers attempt to eradicate the Jewish people. Putin and Netanyahu touched upon a range of issues during their meeting in Moscow on Thursday, such as the fight against terrorism, the crisis in Syria and Israel’s tough relations with Iran, RT news reported. The Russian President began by wishing Netanyahu a happy Purim, a traditional Jewish holiday that marks the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, a vizier in the ancient Persian Empire. In response, Netanyahu said Persia made “an attempt to destroy the Jewish people that did not succeed” nearly 2,500 years ago, and stressed that “today there is an attempt by Persia’s heir, Iran, to destroy the state of the Jews”. “They say this as clearly as possible and print it in black and white in their newspapers,” he said. However, this time Israel has its own territory and an army that protects its territory, Netanyahu said. Putin noted that those events had taken place “in the fifth century BC”, and added that “we now live in a different world” and suggested discussing the actual up-to-date problems in the region, according to the report.
KUALA LUMPUR, MAR 10 (AFP): Malaysia’s police chief today confirmed that the man assassinated at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport last month was Kim Jong-Nam, halfbrother of N. Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un. “We’ve now established that Kim Chol is Kim Jong-Nam,” Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar told a news conference, but he declined to give details of how the body’s identity was confirmed. “For the security of the witnesses so I’m not going to tell you how it was done,” he said. Malaysian authorities had earlier declined to officially confirm the victim’s identity or release his body. The 45-yearold was carrying a passport bearing the name of Kim Chol when he was attacked on February 13 with the lethal nerve agent VX by two women.
Le Pen could still win election: Experts
PARIS, MAR 10 (AGENCIES): Marine le Pen cannot be ruled out of the French Presidential election any longer, experts have claimed. Analysts have suggested that fresh scandals, unrest or terror threats would be necessary to push the Front National candidate to victory. Bruno Cautres, from the Cevipof think tank, told The Local: “Six months ago the possibility of her winning was zero. Now, we cannot say that.” The French presidential election is conducted in two stages. In the first round, which will take place on 23 April, several candidates will compete for a slice of the public vote. Then the two candidates with the most support go into a headto-head final vote, held two weeks later on 7 May. Polls published this week show Emmanuel Macron, the former investment banker running on a probusiness, socially liberal
TOKYO, MAR 10 (Agencies): Japan is ending its peacekeeping mission in troubled South Sudan after five years, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Friday. Abe said Japan would not renew the mission after the current rotation returns in May. The 350-person team has focused on road construction. ister is facing a formal embezzlement enquiry over claims he paid his wife and children €900,000 (£785,000) from the public purse in exchange for little or no work, in an affair dubbed “Penelopegate”. And this week it was further alleged he failed to declare a tax-free loan of €53,000 (£46,000) from a billionaire businessman. The latest polling figures marks a significant change from last month, when Le Pen was eight
points ahead of secondplaced Fillon and 10 ahead of Macron. Leading French politicians such as Democratic Movement president François Bayrou and former Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë have leant their weight to the Macron campaign, urging voters to get behind anyone who can defeat the far-right populist Front National. Received wisdom is that Le Pen will inevitably be defeated in the final headto-head vote, as voters of all political stripes come together to defeat the hardline anti-Islam, anti-immigration party. This happened in 2002, when Le Pen’s father Jean made it into the final run-off for the first time, only to be defeated by Jacques Chirac in a record landslide. Another polling organisation, which has Le Pen ahead by 4 points in the first round, found Fillon and Macron would both defeat her in a secondround contest.

SEOUL, MAR 10 (AP): In a historic, unanimous ruling today, South Korea’s Constitutional Court formally removed impeached President Park Geun-hye from office over a corruption scandal that has plunged the country into political turmoil and worsened an already-serious national divide. Two people later died during protests against the court’s decision, which capped a stunning fall for Park, the country’s first female leader who rode a wave of lingering conservative nostalgia for her late dictator father to victory in 2012, only to see her presidency crumble as millions of furious protesters filled the nation’s streets. The ruling by the eightmember panel opens Park up to possible criminal proceedings prosecutors have already named her a criminal suspect and makes her South Korea’s first democratically elected leader to be removed from office since democracy replaced dictatorship in the late 1980s. It also deepens South Korea’s political and security uncertainty as the country faces existential threats from perennial rival North Korea, reported economic retaliation from a China furious about Seoul’s cooperation with the US on an anti-missile system, and questions in Seoul about the new Trump administration’s commitment to the countries’ decades-long security alliance. Park’s “acts of violating the constitution and law are a betrayal of the public trust,” acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said. “The ben-

AB de Villiers becomes top ranked batsman in ODIs
D ubai , M arch 1 0 (IANS): South Africas star batsman AB de Villiers on Friday regained the top spot in the ICC player rankings for One-Day International batsmen after leading the list of run-scorers in the recent series against New Zealand. De Villiers’s 262 runs in the series, including a highest of 85 in the third ODI at Wellington, have helped him overtake Australia opener David Warner at the top of the ladder, reclaiming the top spot within two months of losing it to India captain Virat Kohli, according to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) statement. The 33-year-old batsman is on 875 points, four points ahead of Warner and 23 clear of Kohli. Among other batsmen, England’s Joe Root and Alex Hales are major gainers as they have reached career-best rankings. Root has reached fourth spot after scoring 195 runs including 101 in the final match in Bridgetown against West Indies while Hales, who knocked up 110 in the same match, his fifth century in the last 20 ODIs, has gained four spots to reach 16th position. Other batsmen to make upward movement include the New Zealand pair of Martin Guptill (up two places to seventh rank) and Ross Taylor (up two places to 14th). In the bowlers rankings, South Africa’s Imran Tahir led the table while his team-mate Kagiso Rabada has broken into the top five for the first time after taking eight wickets in four matches against New Zealand.
Root, Hales guide England to clean sweep against Windies
Alex Hales after scoring his century during the 3rd ODI.
BARBADOS, MAR10 (IANS): Centuries by Alex Hales and Joe Root helped England complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the West Indies after the hosts were thrashed by 186 runs in the third and final One-day International (ODI) at the Kensington Oval here. Put in to bat, England racked up a sizeable 328, but the home team could muster only 142 in 39.2 overs in its reply on Thursday. This was the Caribbean side’s heaviest loss against England in an ODI in terms of runs, while it also marked the first occasion since 1991 that England had swept an ODI series against the West Indies 3-0. Back in the side after a two-month injury lay off, Hales fired a 107-ball 110 to virtually take the game away from the hosts with a record 192-r un second wicket stand with
Root, who followed up his match-winning 90 not out in the second game in Antigua with a 108-ball 101. West Indies needed victory to avoid a series sweep and also pick up valuable ranking points that would help the team earn automatic qualification for the ICC World Cup 2019, but the team came up short. Dropped catches hurt the Caribbean side, with Root let off twice early in his innings. Alzarri Joseph, the 20-year-old Antigua pacer looked the most threatening of the West Indies bowlers though he was on the expensive side, picking up 4/76 in 10 overs. Skipper Jason Holder, who won the toss for the third consecutive time, did well while opening the bowling to return 3/41 in 10 overs. In response, West I n d i e s we n t i n t o t h e
backfoot straightway after losing three early wickets with just 13 runs on the board inside the first four overs. They quickly slid to 45/6 by the 17th over. Jonathan Car ter top-scored with 46 in the middle-order to delay the inevitable. For the English side, Chris Woakes, who was named the man-of-theseries, and Liam Plunkett, took three wickets each. Pacer Steven Finn also played his part with two wickets while leg-spinner Adil Rashid finished off the affair with the last wicket of Devendro Bishoo. Brief Scores: England 328 (Alex Hales 110, Joe Root 101, Alzarri Joseph 4 / 7 6 , Ja s o n H o l d e r 3/41) beat West Indies 142 (Jonathan Carter 46, Alzarri Joseph 22, Chris Wo a k e s 3 / 1 6 , L i a m Plunkett 3/27) by 186 runs.
