Commit to plastic-free Nagaland by Dec: CM

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 5 (NPN): On the occasion of World Environment Day, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio appealed to citizens to commit to a plastic-free Nagaland by not using any item made of non-biodegradable plastic within six months. Speaking at the programme to observe World Environment Day under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” at NBCC Convention Hall here on Tuesday, Rio also urged the business community to join in the endeavour and extend their active support and cooperation. The programme was organised by Environment, Forests & Climate Change department. The chief minister promised that if Nagaland could become “plastic-free by December 1 this year”, then an action plan would be prepared to ensure availability of alternatives like jute bags, cloth bags, bamboo cutlery, etc, to ensure a clean environment. Towards this, Rio asked chief secretar y Temjen Toy to set up a taskforce to achieve the

goal so that by resolving to reduce use of plastics, every individual would be contributing to protecting the environment. Rio also informed that his government was committed to make Nagaland “open defecation free” and exuded confidence that this could be achieved by October 2 this year, a year ahead of the national target. Referring to NDPP manifesto that promised to launch a campaign for clean and green Nagaland within three months, Rio said the PDA government remained committed to planting trees for a Green

Nagaland. He said that as the nation celebrates 48 months of NDA rule in Delhi, the PDA government has resolved to plant minimum 48,000 saplings in the next one week. In this regard, he said each of the 11 districts and Noklak would be planting a minimum of 4,000 saplings to ensure that the goal of planting 48,000 saplings was achieved. Rio urged the community, youth and citizens to join in the campaign and plant more trees to turn the dream of a clean and green Nagaland into a reality. Earlier, calling for a

plastic-free environment, the chief minister said plastic pollution was one of the biggest environmental challenges that required action from every individual and behavioural change to reduce the burden of plastic pollution. Terming plastic as an environmental disaster, Rio gave a statistical figure which estimated that the world used annually up to five trillion plastic bags, mostly made of polyethylene, a low cost polymer derived from petroleum most of which was nonbiodegradable. He said that only 9% of all plastic waste was recycled and that most of the plastic bags just accumulated in landfills and polluted the environment as the synthetic plastic was non-biodegradable. Rio also pointed out that plastics have become a municipal waste nightmare, prompting local governments across the world to impose bans on use of plastic bags. He also said countries like Bangladesh, France and Rwanda had banned plastic bags, while Chile became the first South American country to ap-

prove a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags on May 30 this year. Rio also shared the information that one million plastic drinking bottles were purchased every minute and 500 billion disposable plastic bags used worldwide every year, out of which 50% are single use and discarded. He mentioned that plastic takes about 1,000 years to fully disintegrate. Asser ting that the World Environment Day provides was an opportunity to adopt lifestyle changes that could help combat plastic pollution around the world, the chief minister said one needed to act actively and participate willingly to combat the challenge and save the fragile environment. He advised the people to adopt the principle of “If You Can’t Reuse It, Refuse It” as plastic has become a menace in Nagaland too, especially in Kohima, Dimapur and other district headquarters, resulting in choking of drains and gutters, causing floods and providing a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

not be hampered: Rio

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 5 (NPN): Taking note of the decision of the NNPGs Working Committee to suspend all negotiations with the Centre following the raid carried out at the resident of NNC (parent body) general secretary and NNPGs Working Committee co-convener, V. Nagi on June 2, Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday asserted that issues like this should not hamper the negotiation process which has been going on for the past two decades. Talking to media persons on the sidelines of World Environment Day programme, Rio said people want early solution and all these issues cannot be a stumbling block to the negotiation process. Rio however exuded confidence that good sense would prevail among the negotiating parties. Rio said this issue was also discussed during the security coordination meeting held on June 4. He said Assam Rifles may have received some inputs which prompted them to conduct the raid. He however cautioned both sides that small things should not come “on the way to this big issue (negotiation)” which is going on for the last 21 years. While urging both the parties to come and talk across the table to resolve the issue, Rio reminded both the parties to be serious about finding solution.

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Representatives of twenty apex tribal bodies and GBs of Nagaland Tuesday appealed to the NNPGs Working Committee (WC) to reconsider its decision of suspending the negotiations and continue the talks with the Government of India in the larger interest of the people. The organizations conveyed this to the WC at the joint consultative meeting held on June 5 at Hotel Saramati convened by the NNPGs WC, a press note issued through the WC, NNPGs media cell stated. Working Committee convener, N Kitovi Zhimomi informed the gathering that the essence and spirit of 1951 Naga plebiscite was very much alive and visible on major issues in the present negotiations. WC also asserted that “if Naga inhabited areas cannot be integrated at this hour, honorable and acceptable political solution must be guaranteed to Nagas in Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, enabling Nagas to be

their own masters in their ancestral lands.” At the meeting, the house unanimously adopted a two-point resolution-- Extending support the existing ceasefire between GoI and NNPGs, the house opined that supporting the ongoing political negotiation was possible only under the atmosphere of peace. With the ceasefire agreement, they said it was normal and obvious that terms and conditions are laid down for the participants to uphold and act accordingly in letter and spirit. The house also expressed dismay by way in which security forces continue to antagonize prominent Naga national leaders with clandestine raids of their homes, without such raids being warranted. “Raid implies suspicious actions against someone whose action is considered to be anti-people. The ceasefire is the thesis and the raid is antithesis and therefore political negotiations and raids cannot go hand in hand,” the house said. (Cont’d on p-7)

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): Reacting to various press statements that appeared in the local media regarding Naga Hoho vis-a-vis other apex tribes of Nagaland, Naga Hoho vice president (political) Samson Remei has sought to clarify various controversies in public domain. The NH vice president (Political) reminded that the Hoho was governed by its Yezabo created to safeguard Naga brotherhood, unity and fraternity among the tribes. He therefore said it was incumbent upon the NH to clarify the issues surrounding recent controversies. First of all, Remei touched upon the series of meetings held by Naga Hoho and the controversy stoked by NH deputy speaker in summoning the federal assembly by bypassing the NH executive. The NH vice president also admitted that the Hoho had been facing obstacles from some elements both within and outside working against the legitimacy of the Naga Hoho and even to

the extent of dismantling it. He however reiterated that the NH was not the property of any particular tribe or region but for all Nagas. Further he said there was need for substantiation regarding the allegation made by the NH deputy speaker that a certain Naga national organisation had directed the units against attending the assembly which he had convened. The NH vice president also admitted that three apex tribes –Ao, Sumi and Lotha- have dissociated from Naga Hoho and directed their respective representatives to demit any position held under Naga Hoho. In this regard, the Ao Senden excommunicated its member and president of Naga Hoho for refusing to resign. However, Remei said the Ao Senden in its latest communication to Naga Hoho, on May 25,2018 informed that it has withdrawn the excommunication on P.Chuba Ozukum on November 21,2017.
