Rahul’s hug still bugs Modi

SHAHJAHANPUR (UP), JUL 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took a dig at Rahul Gandhi over the “unwanted hug” he received from the Congress president in Parliament, and said the coming together of many parties against the BJP will only help the ‘lotus’ bloom. “We asked the reasons for their no confidence, but when they failed to give it they ended up giving an unwanted hug,” Modi said, referring to Gandhi’s embrace in Lok Sabha yesterday. Addressing a Kisan Kalyan Rally in Shahjahanpur, Modi said: “There is not just one ‘dal’ (political party) but dal over dal resulting in “dal-dal” (marshy land) which will only help the ‘lotus” bloom.” Lotus is the election symbol of the BJP. He said the coming together of several parties against the BJP will be an opportunity. Slamming opposition parties, he said they were running after the prime minister’s chair, ignoring the poor, youth and farmers. He used a Hindi expression that translates to more the parties, more the marshy land in which the ‘lotus’ blooms.

“If one dal (party) is added to another dal, then it becomes dal-dal (marshy land) which is favourable for ‘kamal’ to blossom. Asking the people if they were satisfied with what happened in Lok Sabha, he alleged that the opposition parties only had their eyes of the prime minister’s chair. “Are you people satisfied with what happened yesterday in Lok Sabha... Have you come to know who is at fault. They are not seeing the poor and the

country but have their eyes only on the PM’s chair,” he said. “Have I done anything wrong. I am only working for the poor and the country...fighting corruption and this is my crime,” he said. Accusing previous governments of not having the will to help farmers, Modi listed the key decisions taken by his government for welfare of farmers and criticised the parties who ruled in the past for lacking pro-farmer intentions.

Congress today claimed Rahul Gandhi’s hug has come as a big “shock” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has exposed his politics of “hatred and violence”. The opposition party questioned why Modi could not gracefully accept such a gesture from his own countryman when he could accept being embraced by Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif. The party’s reaction came after the prime minister took a dig at Rahul Gandhi for asking him to stand up for a hug after walking across to his chair in the Lok Sabha during the debate on no-confidence motion yesterday, saying the Congress President appeared to be in a hurry to occupy his seat. Hitting out at Modi, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said, “Mr Prime Minister, if you can accept hugs from (former) Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, why could you not show some grace to Rahul Gandhi against whom you hold perpetual grudges.”

Outsiders cannot determine future and fate of Nagas: Rio Staff Reporter

IMPHAL, JUL 21: Leading civil society organizations (CSOs) in Manipur Saturday objected to the purported move to extend Article 371 (A) of Indian Constitution to Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur. Three CSOs –– All Manipur United Club Organization (AMUCO), United Committee Manipur (UCM) and Committee of Civil Society Kangleipak (CCSK) demanded that Manipur Assembly pass a resolution in this regard in the ongoing session. CSOs were reacting to Interlocutor for Naga peace talks, RN Ravi, statement to the parliamentary standing committee hinting extension of Article 371A (which guarantees special constitutional status to Nagaland) to Naga-inhabited areas in neighbouring Manipur, Assam and Ar unachal Pradesh. Addressing a joint press conference, three CSOs said Ravi’s statement contradicted repeated assurances given by the Central leaders including Prime Minister.

DIMAPUR, JULY 21 (NPN): Calling upon the neighbouring states to support the Nagas and respect the rights of the Nagas so their rights would also be respected, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, on Saturday asserted that non-Nagas cannot dictate terms and determine the future and fate of the Nagas. “We want to live as good neighbours, coexist in peace to forge forward together for all round development, having harmony and brotherhood with each other in different states”, Rio said while speaking at the dedicatory programme of the Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) marketing complex at Khermahal near Tragopan Hotel here on Saturday. Reacting to the Manipur chief minister’s recent statement on Naga issue, Rio said that they could speak for themselves but they cannot speak for the Nagas. them and everybody but it will not deter us from speaking out our right or defending our right”, Rio stated. Rio felt that Tenyimias, who were spread out in Manipur and Assam, should carry the message everywhere for unity and for the integration, propagating to let other understand Naga issue. Pointing out that Naga unity was a must, the state chief minister said “when we are united, our dreams can come true and our rights can be achieved; but if we are divided, our wishes will be just a dream, our rights will be suppressed.”

Further, the chief minister said that unity was the need of the day to meet the dreams and wishes of the people, which he maintained was the birthright of Nagas for integration. Rio also congratulated the TUD for the construction of business marketing complex and opined that it would not only benefit Tenyimi people but the whole community of Dimapur. With people from other states of India and from across Nagaland living together, the chief minister said Dimapur was not only a miniature Nagaland but a miniature India. He said the most important things for Dimapur citizens would be unity, coexistence and harmony. The chief minister also urged the people to not find fault in one another but should come together and fight for their rights. On the occasion, the chief minister sought the support, cooperation and participation of every citizen to make Nagaland plastic free project by November this year. (Cont’d on p-7)

an inseparably inclusive relationship on the basis of sharing the mutually agreed sovereign powers. Within this Framework, details are being worked out.” NSCN (I-M) maintained that the recognition of Nagas’ unique history and situation and Framework Agreement in essence implied the important steps taken toward solution through mutual respect by both the entities. When the negotiating parties were fully committed to working out a solution that is acceptable to both, NSCN (I-M) said it was mandatory that the parties must exercise integrity and restrain any agencies trying to derail the political negotiation. Our position is clear to the end. We are serious, and we are careful, as we know that the righteous can do nothing if the foundation is destroyed,” it added. Meanwhile, NSCN (I-M) said that since lasting peace between India and Nagas will equally benefit all in the region, they were prepared to stand to the last.

NNPGs WC clears air on ongoing talks

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Reacting to various reports in the media, Working Committee (WC) of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) on Saturday maintained the reports have been active on the Indo-Naga political talks even touching on subjects matters that did not conform to the “Agreed Position or Preamble to Negotiations signed on November 17, 2017 in New Delhi, between the Government of India and the Working Committee”. NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): The powerful GST council Saturday cut tax rates on over 60 products including washing machines and refrigerators and simplified compliance norms for most businesses. The new tax rates will be applicable from July 27. The move is seen as part of an effort by the NDA government to counter resentment before the 2019 general elections over the way GST was hurriedly implemented last year, hitting businesses and the public. The government has been frequently criticised by the opposition for the large number of returns that businesses have to file and the long list of goods in the 28 per cent bracket that was initially meant for a handful of luxury goods to be taxed at the highest rate.

M e a n w h i l e, Fo o d Safety officials on Saturday along with Food Safety Commissioner (FSC) cum commissioner & secretary (H&FW), Himato Zhimomi; chief medical officer Dimapur, K. Vikato Kinimi, DCCI members and others inspected the kitchen of Plaza bakery and modern ice-cream factory and found that the food items were being prepared in a dirty and unhygienic condition. Zhimomi on Saturday took to twitter saying: “Disappointed to see extremely unhygienic condition of Dimapur’s top baker’s

kitchen; Plaza! No option but to order shut down for improvement!” He further said- “Today forced to shut down Modern ice-cream factory in Dimapur, becoz of unhygienic conditions. Our children need to be protected!” Talking to Nagaland Post, Himato confirmed that he had directed shutting down the kitchen of the bakery and not the shop, until major improvement was done. He said public are paying money for the products and should not be cheated by sale of unhygienic items. Himato further maintained that the inspections were being carried out to ensure public safety and safe food-handling. He also confirmed that mangoes, bananas and some other items were also found with carbide and ordered to be disposed off at the DMC dumping site.

misinterpreted views have become rampant at such junctures. WC said under its banner and with GPRN/NSCN general secretary N Kitovi Zhimomi as convener and five co-conveners, all from different political groups-Zhopra Vero (FGN), Y. Wangtin Naga (NSCN-R), Hozheto Chophy (NPGN/ NNC), Kiumukam Yimchunger (NNC/GDRN), Toshi Walling (NNC-Parent Body) accompanied by other members, they were presently engaged in negotiations with the government of India , represented by its Interlocutor R.N. Ravi who is also the interlocutor with NSCN (I-M). WC NNPGs, came into existence, leaving aside all ideological differences, at the behest of Naga tribal bodies, traditional village headmen (GBs), Naga churches and all civil societies in order to achieve

a common objective of resolving the Indo-Naga political issue through political dialogue. The WC said it held 31 rounds of talks stretching over nine months with the government of India, as two entities and have made significant progress with clear understanding of the genesis of Naga problem in recognising the historical and political perspective of a people’s struggle, while equally taking contemporary political reality into consideration. Further WC reminded that the Naga problem dated back to pre-independent India and that the conflict outlived all post-Independent successive Indian governments which failed to understand the Naga issue. “It was, and is never a conflict to resolve a social or economic problem,” it asserted.
