DIMAPUR, JAN 6 (NPN): Taking cognizance of several government offices remaining closed and officers and staff remaining absent from work, Nagaland Lokayukta has ordered issuing of notices to all heads of offices in question, including chief secretary, and question why appropriate action should not be taken against them under Nagaland Lokayukta Act and other provisions of civil and

criminal law. Mentioning that it was evident from the photographs that the offices were not functioning despite a government order to keep them open on January 2, Nagaland Lokayukta Police Establishment Organisation Dy SP, B Phom in his report submitted to the Nagaland Lokayukta stated that even the salary of government employees could not be paid as the Treasuries and other

offices remained closed. Pointing out that deprivation of salary and legitimate dues of government employees and retaining the money without any legal sanction could result in civil and criminal liability, the DySP suggested in his report that the same could be deducted from the salary of the official responsible for delay, apart from prosecution under the criminal law. Earlier, the anti-cor-

ruption ombudsman organisation perused the report submitted by the DySP and said the matter appeared to be covered under the category of maladministration as provided in Sec. 2(1) (k) of Nagaland Lokayukta Act 2017. It directed registration of a PE for enquiry by Lokayukta Police establishment. It asked the enquiry officer to visit all such offices to find out whether the offices were open, functioning and

attended by staff. Calling for taking photographs of the offices and attach/enclose the same with his report for appropriate order, the Lokayukta further ordered the enquiry officer that he could also requisition IRBn personnel for his protection while carrying out/implementing the order. Following the January 3 order of the Lokayukta, the DySP accordingly detailed constables Vezotso Yhobu and Vemutha Thira to visit the State government offices on January 4 and 5 to find out whether they were open, functioning and attended by staff, besides instructing them to take photographs of the offices.
