Teen fires at anti-CAA protestors in Delhi 1 injured while police remained mute spectators

NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): Thousands of people and police personnel faced off against each other near the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student before walking away while waving the firearm over his head shouting “Yeh lo aazadi”. While the man was overpowered by police and arrested, the injured student Shahdab Farooq, who was seen bleeding from his left hand, was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Farooq, a mass communications student, belongs to Kashmir. The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, “Here, take this freedom.”

After the spot assessment, a brief meeting on disaster management was held in the conference hall of DC Peren. As tension spiralled in the area, Home Minister Amit Shah said on Twitter that he had spoken to the Delhi police commissioner to take strictest possible action. Shah also said the government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared. The gunman went live on Facebook, where he identifies himself as Rambhakt Gopal, before the brandishing the gun. Police said they were verifying whether it is his real name. Before the attack, the man put out messages on Facebook, referencing the Shaheen Bagh protests nearby. “Shaheen Bhag Khel Khatam (Run Shaheen,

the game is over)”, said one post. Another message stated, “Please wrap me in saffron in my last journey with slogans of Jai Shri Ram”. His Facebook profile was deleted after screenshots of his posts were circulated widely on social media platforms. His social media profile revealed links to the Bajrang Dal, a group with ties to the ruling BJP. The shooting comes just days after senior BJP leader and Union Minister Anurag Thakur was seen prompting a crowd at a Delhi election rally to chant the slogan “Goli Maaro...” (shoot the traitors) in reference to protesters against the CAA.

Police watched silently: The firing at the Jamia Millia Islamia student march to Rajghat on Thursday is the story of an assailant brandishing the firearm, opening the fire in public and the police remaining a moot spectator. When Gopal, the assailant, brandished the gun and threatened to shoot at students, barely 10 metres away was standing Jamia SHO Upendra Singh along with dozens of police personnel. But they did nothing to prevent the firing, despite the students shouting hoarse for the police help. When Gopal fired his pistol, it hit Shadab Farooq, a mass communication department student, injuring his hand. And the police got into action -- albeit in a slow motion. Only one cop moved to get his hands on the assailant. They also didn’t remove the barricade or attempted to take the injured student to hospital -- Shadab had to climb the barricade and run to seek medical attention. The firing took place when the march had just moved 60 metres, from Gate No. 7 towards the main road at the Fortis Hospital crossing.

After peace pact, 1615 NDFB cadres surrender arms, ammunition in Assam Guwahati, Jan 30 (PTI): Three days after signing a peace pact with the government, over 1,600 cadres of the Bodo militant group NDFB on Thursday surrendered their arms and ammunition before Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the National Democratic Front of Boroland’’s (NDFB) move, saying it sends a clear message that a solution to any issue is possible when the path of violence is shunned and faith in democracy and Constitution reposed. Welcoming the NDFB cadres-- 836 of the NDFBProgressive, 579 of the NDFB-Ranjan Daimary faction and 200 of the NDFB(S) led by B Saoraigwra-- into the mainstream, Sonowal said he was confident that the initiative will inspire others, who were yet to give up arms, to come together and work for the “Team Assam”. Over 4,800 weapons, including AK rifles, lightmachine guns and stenguns were laid down by the NDFB members on the occasion. The government on

Sonowal and Sarma during the surrender ceremony, Thursday.

Monday had signed an accord with the NDFB and two other outfits, providing political and economic benefits without acceding to the demand for a separate state or Union Territory, with an aim to bring permanent peace in the Bodo-dominated areas in Assam. Sonowal said a comprehensive rehabilitation policy would be formulated for providing employment opportunities to the surrendered militants so that they could make meaningful contribution to the process of nation-building. Union Home minister Shah had described the agreement as “historic” and said it would bring permanent solution to the

decades-old problems of the Bodo people. As per the accord, the BTC will be strengthened with more powers and its seats will be expanded from 40 to 60. A commission will be set up for inclusion of Bodo-dominated villages in the BTC and exclusion of those where Bodos are not in majority. This was the third Bodo accord to be signed in 27 years. As per the new accord, the name of the BTAD will be changed to Bodoland Territorial Region and it will have more executive, administrative, legislative and financial powers. The government will soon notify Bodo language as in Devanagari script as an associate official language of the state.

Two-day bank Alarm bells for Modi govt as quality of CPO files PIL seeking compensation strike from today Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 30 (NPN): In pursuant of the resolution adopted during its executive council meet held on June 29, 2019 “to pursue damage compensation for those whose properties were damaged” by M/s Maytas-Gayatti during construction of two-lane road, Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) filed a public interest litigation (PIL) at Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench on December 13, 2019 seeking justice on behalf of thousands of poor and helpless victims in Nagaland in general and Phek district in particular. This was stated by CPO Committee on 2-lane Road convener Vaprumu Demo at a press conference at Hotel Japfü here on Thursday. It was also attended by five other members of CPO Committee on 2-lane Road. The convener said the

case was filed by Angshuman Sarma on behalf of CPO and the court had instantly admitted the petition as a fit case on January 16, 2020. Thereafter, notice had been issued to all respondents returnable within six weeks and listed the matter for hearing on February 27. Sharing details, Demo said M/s Maytas-Gayatri was awarded four projects work of two-lane roads – Longleng-Changtonya road, Mon-Tamlu-Merangkong road, Phek-Ptutsero road and ZunhebotoChakhahama road – under SARDP-NE (Phase A) worth Rs 1,296 crore in 2010. He said the work started in 2011 under direct supervision of PWD (NH), Nagaland. However, he alleged that the joy of people over the two-Iane roads soon turned into a nightmare due to total disregard of contractual agreements

(on designated dumping areas) and public objection as the contractor rampantly cut earth of steep hills and pushed down all excavated soil, rocks and debits on valley side, resulting in huge damage of valued land and properties of the poor and marginalised villagers. Demo regretted that the reckless construction activities by the contractor and lack of supervision by implementing authority led to needless displacement of many human habitations and permanent destruction of massive cultivated as cultivable land became landslide zones and dumping grounds. He claimed that several thousands of families were deprived of livelihood and many migrated elsewhere, while many children gave up their studies and scores now were dependent solely on BPL rice or charity.

DIMAPUR, JAN 30 (NPN): United For um of Bank Unions (UFBU), which comprises of nine bank unions of employees and officers, has called for a two-day nationwide strike from January 31 to February 1 to protest against “unwarranted delay” in wage revision settlement for bank employees and officers due from November 2017 by Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). Besides the proposed two-day strike, UFBU has also given call for similar agitation programmes including three-day strike (March 11-13, 2020) and indefinite strike from April 1, 2020. According to PTI report, many banks, including SBI, have informed customers that operations may be impacted to some extent due to the strike. The strike would coincide with the beginning of the Budget session of parliament and presentation of (Cont’d on p-8) union Budget 2020-21.

life, inflation, income indicators worsen

NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (IANS): Just eight months into the second term, it is not good news for the Modi government on the economic and inflation front, with the IANS-CVoter Budget Tracker findings showing that people are unhappy, income are going down and household expenditure is going up. On the eve of the Economic Survey and Union Budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have much to worry about going into the flagship economic event of the year 2020. The key takeaways of IANS- CVoter Budget Tracker are that life has gotten worse over last year on all parameters and over 2015 after the Modi government took over. All the economic parameters are in bad shape and respondents to the tracker are in a de-

spondent mood. The findings come at a time when GDP is at decadal lows, investment is floundering, investigative agencies are unearthing new scams and business confidence is law which in turn is hurting consumers, households which are struggling to make ends meet. To make matters worse, the despondency in the country on economic issues is touching the rock bottom levels of 2014 when PM Modi riding on promises and high aspirations rode to power promising jobs, prosperity and growth. The poll sample size for the tracker is 4292 and the survey was conducted in third and fourth week of January 2020. High inflation coupled with concerns over the general economic slowdown as well as low job creation seems to have dented the Central government’s image as prudent economic

manager, a survey report showed.adir of economic drift and policy paralysis. Ahead of the Union Budget a new survey shows a growing unease among the general public due to rising prices of everyday use items under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Nearly three-fourths of the respondents in IANSCVOTER survey this year said that inflation has gone up and nearly 40 per cent said that high inflation has had an adverse impact on their quality of their life. The pre-budget survey comes as crude reality and a reflection of current economic indicators on the ground, as wages have stagnated while prices of essentials including food items have surged in the past few months. Not to forget, unemployment rate released last year shows that it at a 45-year high level.

DIMAPUR, JAN 30 (NPN): On behalf of the general public of Yikhum, Yikhum Village Council (YVC) has strongly condemned the January 27 incident at Doyang in Wokha in which one Mhabemo Mozhui, s/o Chanbemo Mozhui of Chudi village, had allegedly attempted to murder truck driver Nyanbemo Kithan and his friend Wochothung Odyuo while unloading some goods at Doyang en route to Wokha around 9.30 p.m. Asserting that the victims were innocent and were earning their livelihood by plying as truck driver and co-driver, YVC chairman Robin Kithan, assistant head GB Mhonlumo Odyuo and secretary Chumbemo Odyuo alleged that the accused attempted to murder the victims without any provocation. They accused Mozhui of pulling out a pistol and shooting on the ground before firing at the driver. Unfortunately the bullet hit the co-driver in the mouth who lost some teeth and was now undergoing medical treatment, they added. YVC alleged that Mozhui and his friends chased the victims with the intention of killing them, though the latter managed to escape. According to the council, this was not the first instance

but one among many such acts in which the accused had manhandled and attempted on the lives of many innocent law-abiding citizens of the village without any reason. Considering the seriousness of the case, YVC in its emergency general public meeting held on January 28 resolved to file and FIR immediately with the police seeking arrest of the culprit and associates within 48 hours of lodging of the complaint. The meeting also resolved to demand that the State government should bear medical expenses of the victims, warning that in the event of failure to nab the culprit within the stipulated time, the case would be pursue by the people, for which the turns of events might not be predicted. YVC also appealed to all groups and organisations not to entertain “criminalminded” person Mozhui in their fold, cautioning that it would not co-operate with any such group or organisation in the future. In a letter to the NSCN (I-M) kilo secretary, YVC demanded immediate termination of Mhabemo from active service of the NSCN (I-M) and to award stern action. K Y M C

Coronavirus: Tripura youth dies in Malaysia Agartala/Guwahati, Jan 30 (IANS): After reports of the first death of an Indian due to coronavirus in Kerala, another death due to coronavirus infection occurred of a 22-year-old youth from Tripura who died in a Malaysian hospital after he was reportedly infected by the dreaded virus, family sources said on Thursday. H oweve r, Tr i p u r a Health and Family Welfare Director Radha Debbarma said the government has no information about the youth’s death due to coronavirus infection in Malaysia. Following advisories of the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, all state governments and Central agencies, including the Airport Authority of India (AAI), have set up special screening counters and desks. According to Sahajan Mia in Bishalgarh (under western Tripura’s Sepahijala district), his son Manir Hossain, 22, died in a Malaysian hospital after he was reportedly infected by the Novel Coronavirus. “Manir since 2018 had been working in a restaurant in Malaysia. On

Wednesday restaurant staff informed us over phone that he had died in a hospital due to coronavirus,” Mia told the media. He said with the help of the state government, the family was trying to bring the body back home. According to the family, Hossain, a cricket player, got married in 2016. As he was unable to get a job in Tripura, he went to Malaysia in 2018 and since then had been working in a restaurant there. Meanwhile, Tripura Health and Family Welfare Director Radha Debbarma told IANS on Thursday the government has set up a special screening desk and counter at the Agartala airport and in the integrated checkpost along the India-Bangladesh border at Akhaurah, near Agartala. She said a special unit has also been set up in the Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital and the microbiology unit was also alerted. In Guwahati, Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Department has issued instructions to the joint directors in all the districts to make arrangements to

screen persons for coronavirus if they have returned from China or Nepal, or have come in contact with people who have visited the countries, where the disease has infected the people. Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Department Director Rathindra Bhuyan said in Guwahati that isolated observation beds have been set up in district hospitals and medical colleges of the state to treat suspected patients in case anybody is found to be affected by coronavirus. Guwahati or any other northeastern states’s airport does not

have direct flight connectivity with any of the cities in China or Nepal. However, people from Nepal and other countries along the northeastern states occasionally come to northeast India by road. According to officials in Imphal, Shillong and Aizawl, similar screening test counters have been set up at airports and border entry points. Eight northeastern states, including Sikkim, share 5,437 km international boundaries with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.

The Assam Rifles also reminded that prevention of smuggling of narcotics has been a focus area of elected governments and it has therefore been a mandated task of the Assam Rifles. It asserted that to save Manipur youth from the menace of drugs, total dedication by Assam Rifles has led to the recovery of over Rupees 500 crores of drugs and contraband items in the year 2019 alone. The Meghalaya Assembly had on December 19, 2019 last unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union government to implement Inner Line Permit under the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873, in the state. Sangma said that he also informed the Home Minister that a delegation from Meghalaya

would like to meet him and I expressed the requirement and desire to implement Inner Line Permit. Days after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the parliament, Chief Minister Sangma had led a delegation of the ruling members of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance to Shah and demanded the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in the state. Several pressures groups, including the powerful Khasi Students’ Union have also demanded the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in the state. The Inner Line Permit regime was extended to Manipur on December 11 with President Ram Nath Kovind signing the order. Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are already under the Inner Line Permit regime for several decades. The Khasi Students’ Union, which has been demanding for the imple-

BJP wants to create ‘riot-like’ situation, alleges AAP Rahul Gandhi lashes out at PM, says NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): The AAP on Thursday smelt a BJP conspiracy behind the Jamia firing incident, saying the saffron party wants to create a “riot-like” situation in the city and get the assembly polls, scheduled for February 8, postponed as it can sense its defeat. The party also demanded the resignation of Amit Shah, terming him the “most incompetent Home Minister India has ever had”, while also slamming the police for just being a “mute spectator” to the firing incident. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Delhi’s law and order was “deteriorating”. “What is happening in Delhi? The law and order is deteriorating. Please take care of Delhi’s law and order,” Kejriwal said in reply to a tweet by Shah in which the home minister said he has directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take strict action against the culprit. On Thursday afternoon, a student from Jamia Millia Islamia was injured when a man opened fire at a group of protesters and shouted “Yeh lo

Airline took action on Kamra without consulting me: Pilot NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): The pilot-in-command of the IndiGo flight in which journalist Arnab Goswami was allegedly heckled by Kunal Kamra has told airline’’s management that he was “disheartened” to learn the carrier took action against the comedian without consulting him and solely on the basis of social media posts. “As captain of 6E5317 Mumbai-Lucknow flight on January 28, I do not find... events reportable in any way. Mr. Kamra’’s behaviour, while unsavoury, was not qualifying of a level 1 unruly passenger. Indeed, we pilots can all attest to incidents similar and/or worse in nature that were not deemed unruly,” the captain said in his email to the airline’’s management which has been accessed by PTI. When asked about the pilot-in-command’’s email, IndiGo said, “We have received the relevant statements and the internal committee has initiated the investigation regarding this incident.”

Arvind Kejriwal (C) along with party leaders Sanjay Singh (L) and Pankaj Gupta at a press conference at the party office, in New Delhi, Thursday. (PTI) azaadi”, triggering panic in the area. The man was detained after he fired at students demonstrating against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, police said. The Aam Aadmi Party alleged the incident in Jamia area was a BJP conspiracy to spoil the atmosphere of Delhi so that the Delhi elections scheduled for February 8 could be postponed. “The BJP did such a disgusting act on the Martyrdom Day of Gandhi ji. The BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah are scared

of losing the upcoming polls and they are trying to get the polls postponed through the act,” Singh told reporters at a press conference. He further alleged that Shah has tied the hands of the Delhi police that is “why they were mute spectators to the incident” Singh said law and order in Delhi has deteriorated after Amit Shah became the home minister. “Shah is the most incompetent Home Minister India has ever had,” Singh alleged.

He also said the BJP is creating a law and order situation in Delhi and seems to be hatching a conspiracy to try and stall the upcoming election, because of the fear of defeat. “Today, we witnessed how easily a man opened fire in the presence of police, at the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University. This incident is yet another instance of the continuously deteriorating law and order situation of Delhi and a pointer to the incapability of Shah as Home Minister,” Singh said. He alleged the BJP was trying to create a “riotlike” situation in Delhi and was hatching the most “diabolical conspiracy” to destroy the peace of the city. The AAP believes that the BJP fears a defeat in this election and therefore Amit Shah and the Delhi BJP leaders resorted to delivering “inflammatory” speeches, he said. “First, senior leaders of the BJP labelled the Delhi Chief Minister a terrorist, but when they realised that none of these dirty tricks is bringing any political gains, they have

now conspired to create a riot-like situation in Delhi by unleashing violence,” he said. Senior AAP leader and national spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said the incident comes on a day when the country is observing the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi. “We witnessed an unprecedented incident in Jamia because the person, whose name is Ram, who fired at the students was doing a Facebook live at the time of the incident. It is completely unacceptable that despite such live videos the police were not prepared,” he said. It is clear that the central government and the Delhi police were protecting such people Kumar said, adding “we also remember what BJP leader and central minister Anurag Thakur told his supporters from a rally in Delhi”. “Keeping in mind the deteriorating law and order situation of Delhi we demand the immediate resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. We also demand FIR against Mr Anurag Thakur under IPC 153 and IPC 505,” said Kumar.

Nirbhaya case: Convicts move court for stay on execution SC rejects third curative plea

NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): Death-row convicts in the Nirbhaya case on Thursday took another step, which may delay their scheduled February 1 hanging, by moving a trial court with a plea to adjourn the execution “sine die” saying they are yet to avail their remaining legal remedies even as the Supreme Court dismissed the third curative petition. Of the four convicts, Mukesh Kumar Singh has exhausted all his legal remedies, including the clemency plea which was dismissed by President Ram Nath Kovind on January 17 and the appeal against the rejection was thrown out by the apex court on Wednesday. Convict Vinay Kumar Sharma had yesterday filed a mercy plea before the

President and the apex court today rejected the curative petition of Akshay Kumar Singh, who is likely to file a clemency plea soon. Pawan Gupta is yet to file a curative petition in the top court. The day witnessed fast-paced development with the counsel for Vinay, Akshay and Pawan rushing to a trial court seeking stay on their executions saying legal remedies of some of them are yet to be availed. While Special Judge A K Jain posted the matter for hearing in the post-lunch session, a five-judge bench of the apex court in the afternoon rejected the curative plea of Akshay saying “no case is made out” and also declined to stay his execution. Hours after the apex court development, the trial judge issued notice to Tihar

jail authorities seeking their response on the plea by three convicts, which the prosecution said was a “mockery of justice” and was only a “delaying tactic”. While all eyes would be in the trial court on Friday when the matter would be taken up for hearing at 10 AM, the reports have already appeared that Pawan Jallad, a hangman from Meerut Prison has reached Tihar Jail two days ahead of the scheduled execution. According to Delhi Prison Rules, none of the four convicts in the same case can be hanged before the last one has exhausted all legal options including the mercy plea. The apex court guidelines also stipulate that convicts cannot be hanged until 14 days after their mercy plea has been rejected by the President. The trial court on January 17 had issued black warrants for the second time for execution of all the four convicts -- Mukesh (32), Pawan (25), Vinay (26) and Akshay (31) -- in Tihar jail at 6 am on February 1. The court had earlier on January 7 fixed January

22 as the hanging date. The 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who came to be known as ‘Nirbhaya’, the fearless one, was gangraped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in south Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital. One of the six accused in the case, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail in 2013. A juvenile, who was among the accused, was convicted by a juvenile justice board and was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term.

Modi, Godse share same ideology

WAYANAD (KERALA), JAN 30 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the latter believed in the same ideology as Nathuram Godse. Addressing thousands of party workers after leading the “Save the Constitution” march at Kalpetta, organised to protest against the Citizenship law coinciding with the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress MP also said Modi was making Indians to prove that they are citizens of the country. Referring to Mahatma Gandhi assassin Godse, he said Modi shared the same ideology with him (Godse).

“Today, an ignorant man is trying to challenge Gandhi’s ideology. He is so full of hatred and anger that he cannot even understand what India’s strength is,” he said. “The ideology is same. Nathuram Godse and Narendra Modi, they believe in the same ideology. There is no difference except that Modi does not have the guts to say he believes in the ideology of Godse,” the Wayanad MP added. Attacking the Prime Minister on the new Citizenship law, Gandhi questioned Modi and asked who was he to ask Indians to prove that they were Indians. “Indians are being made to prove that they are Indians. Who is Nar-

endra Modi to decide if I am Indian? Who gave him the licence to decide who is Indian and who is not Indian? I know I am an Indian and I don’t have to prove it to anybody”, the former Congress president said adding the 1.3 billion Indians do not have to prove to these people that they are Indians. He said the country needs to fight the hatred that is being spread and there is need to confront the BJP peacefully. “Our duty is to fight their hatred. Our duty is to confront them (BJP) peacefully...we do not believe in violence...we believe in love and affection. We will defeat them with love and affection,” he said.

hether there is election or not, hate speeches in India have become a daily and dangerous trend that threatens the very fabric of unity, pluralism and freedom in the world’s largest democracy. In the light of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act, passed by the Parliament of India within 2 days, on December 11,2019 , a report by NDTV revealed that, since December 11, when the citizenship law was passed, there have been 25 instances of VIP hate speeches. The report said most of the hate speeches - 14 - emerged in January 2018 while December 2019 topped the incidents. In the 2019 elections, a pluralist, inclusive India is defending itself against a majoritarian hate-filled ‘New India’. As the country wades into another election campaign, there is a serious risk of losing sight of the fact that this transformation began with the Lok Sabha election campaign in 2014. With the Delhi Assembly election drawing nearer, BJP leaders from top to bottom are giving inflammatory speeches which have communal angle and are especially targeted at anti-CAA protesters. According to political observers, with the AAP projected to sweep the polls and retain power on its plank of governance, the BJP is using its chosen strategy of spewing hate speeches to polarise voters along communal lines.” The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) that comes into effect after polls are announced bars hate speeches though it has no statutory basis. The ECI itself is against making it statutory as the power would shift to the courts and the ECI would not be able take any action other than registering an FIR. In the Delhi election the ECI seems to have become toothless. Sadly, the SC has been reminding the poll panel of its powers. It is inexplicable why did the ECI has chosen to softpedal a range of violations. In April last year, the Congress filed a petition in the Supreme Court where it claimed that 40 representations on violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) were moved in the ECI so far, but no action had been coming from the poll body, which should be devoted to the concept of free and fair elections in a democracy. The petition alleged that the lack of action by the ECI against the prime minister and union home minister Amit Shah was a “tacit endorsement” of their statements and clean chit given to the individuals. Whether it is a sin of omission or commission on the part of the ECI, the consequences have been very worrisome. In the recent campaign for the Delhi assembly polls, Union minister of state for finance and BJP leader, Anurag Thakur, addressing a rally on January 27, in the runup to the Delhi assembly polls called on the crowd “to shoot the nation’s traitors”. Another BJP leader and West Delhi MP Parvesh Singh, when asked about anti-CAA protestors said “the people there would enter your homes and rape your sisters and daughters.” Instead of taking a range of actions in case of violation of the Code, including the imposition of fine, filing of FIR that leads to imprisonment, or even cancelling the polls in that constituency, the ECI has only barred the two from campaigning for three and four days respectively. The disinclination of the ECI in taking stern action against violators of MCC does not bode well for democracy.

DailyDevotion The Dilemma of Obedience Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision. —1 Samuel 3:15 God never speaks to us in dramatic ways, but in ways that are easy to misunderstand. Then we say, “I wonder if that is God’s voice?” Isaiah said that the Lord spoke to him “with a strong hand,” that is, by the pressure of his circumstances (Isaiah 8:11). Without the sovereign hand of God Himself, nothing touches our lives. Do we discern His hand at work, or do we see things as mere occurrences? Get into the habit of saying, “Speak, Lord,” and life will become a romance (1 Samuel 3:9). Every time circumstances press in on you, say, “Speak, Lord,” and make time to listen. Chastening is more than a means of discipline— it is meant to bring me to the point of saying, “Speak, Lord.” Think back to a time when God spoke to you. Do you remember what He said? Was it Luke 11:13, or was it 1 Thessalonians 5:23? As we listen, our ears become more sensitive, and like Jesus, we will hear God all the time. Should I tell my “Eli” what God has shown to me? This is where the dilemma of obedience hits us. We disobey God by becoming amateur providences and thinking, “I must shield ‘Eli,’ ” who represents the best people we know. God did not tell Samuel to tell Eli— he had to decide that for himself. God’s message to you may hurt your “Eli,” but trying to prevent suffering in another’s life will prove to be an obstruction between your soul and God. It is at your own risk that you prevent someone’s right hand being cut off or right eye being plucked out (see Matthew 5:29-30). Never ask another person’s advice about anything God makes you decide before Him. If you ask advice, you will almost always side with Satan. “…I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood…” (Galatians 1:16).

Work ethic and work culture: A Christian perspective

W

ork is by which, we find our self fulfilment and our self actualization. It is in this process that we humanize and become more humane too. Through work, human beings earn daily bread and contribute to the continual development and progress of society. In doing so they elevate the cultural and moral level of the society within which they live. By the term work we understand any activity by humans, whether manual or intellectual they engage in for their sustenance. It means any human activity that can and must be recognized as work, in the midst of all the many activities of which humans are capable of doing. The Bible gives a specific direction and clarity with regard to the involvement of work and the dignity associated with it. This article, examines the work ethic and work culture, in the backdrop of the Naga Society which boast as a Christi State. However, before reflecting further on the Naga society, the exposition of the Biblical perspective on work ethic and work culture is in order In the Bible human beings are made to be the visible universe as an image and likeness of God Himself. They are placed to subdue the earth and be the custodian of the earth (Genesis 1:27-29). God commands Adam and Eve to take care of the garden, to cultivate it for their sustenance (Genesis 2:15). From the beginning therefore, they are called to work. This work has become one of the characteristics that distinguish human beings from the rest of the creatures. We find our conviction in the very first pages of the book of Genesis the source of our inspiration that work is a fundamental dimension of human existence. From John’s gospel, we see the urgency of Jesus in his ministry. That is his heavenly Father is working so he too must be working (John 5:16). Before, he reached the public ministry; Jesus was helping his parents for the family upkeep. The Bible is silent about the early part of his life as it is not the intent of the Bible though to highlight the socio historical dimension per se, however, it highlights, in so far as the divine encountering humanity concretely. Acts 18:3 gives the profession of St Paul. Apart from his preaching work, Paul is Tent maker in order to earn his livelihood and not be a burden to others. No wonder, he speaks strongly to the Thessalonians, with regard to work. He goes on to say, one should not eat if he or she does not work. We should

he latest pandemic disease Coronavirus is making headlines all over the globe. According to CNN,“Scientists have identified two possible root causes of Coronavirus: the consumption of wildlife such as bats in Wuhan and the potential leak of the virus at a well-protected center. Both Hong Kong and China have declared a state of emergency over the Coronavirus outbreak as confirmed cases of the virus officially reached 2,800 as of Jan 27.” For the Christians, this should not come as a new thing (Jesus said, “See, I have told you ahead of time” (Matthew 24:25)). We are not to be surprised when we hear of such news. We are already forewarned in the Bible of all that is about to come on earth before the Son of God comes in his power and glory, “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences (contagion, infections) in various places,” (Luke 21:11). In fact, if we believe the Bible, the situation will get bleaker with time. The question, then, is to know what our response should be in such a situation. These are the three things Christians should do when epidemic diseases

eat only what we earn. “We never accept food from anyone without paying for it; no, we worked with unsparing energy, night and day, so as not to be a burden on any of you” (2 Thessalonians 3:7-8, 10, 12¬). Today we want payment and do minimum work at the expense of public exchequer. Broadening the certain aspects that belonged to the Old Testament, Christianity brought about a fundamental change of ideas in this field. Taking the whole content of the Gospel message as its point of departure, when Jesus became like us in all things devoted most of the years of His life on earth to manual work at the carpenter’s bench. This circumstance constitutes in itself the most eloquent “gospel of work,” showing that the basis for determining the value of human work is not primarily the kind of work being done but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person. The sources of the dignity of work are to be sought primarily in the subjective dimension and not in the objective one. This means that any type of work that accrues income for human survival is worthy of its name and calls for deeper involvement in human development which can be at the personal level and at the social level too. This is the biblical injunction to which every sensible Christian needs to take his or her responsibility seriously and act consciously for the development of human society. Any work is worthy of its name whether it is white colour job, blue colour job or any type of professional work it is worthy of its name provided. It is precisely this fundamental affirmation about work that always emerged from the wealth of Christian truth, especially from the very message of the “gospel of work.” This gives us the basis for a new way of thinking, judging, acting and relating ourselves with one another without having any snobbish attitudes or insular outlooks. Remaining within the context of biblical injunction of work, it is now appropriate to touch upon, at least in a cursory way, certain problems that more closely define work ethic and the dignity of human work. By reaffirming them we can possibly characterize more fully its specific moral value. In doing this we must always keep in mind the biblical calling to “subdue the earth,” in which it expressed the will of the Creator that work should enable man/woman to achieve its end in the visible world that is proper to him/her. God’s original intention

with regard to man/woman, whom He created in His image and His likeness, was not to withdraw from the world and live in a secluded world without much sweat but to work and from sweat they shall eat. Without this consideration it is impossible to understand the meaning of work ethic and work culture. It is also impossible without this premise, to understand why work culture should be a virtue: for virtue, as a moral habit, is something whereby man/woman becomes good as man/woman and attains his/her higher faculties. It is by activating our higher faculties we minimize our animal instincts and progressively work for the society by working for ourselves and working for livelihood. Therefore, by having a positive attitude to work we cultivate the virtue of being humane and sane. The normal tendency in all of us is to eat without work which is against the very nature of our existence in the Biblical sense though. It can be argued further that work is a fundamental dimension of man’s existence on earth. Because the whole heritage of the many sciences devoted to man: anthropology, paleontology, history, sociology, and psychology and so on; they all seem to bear witness to this fact in an irrefutable way. But the source of this conviction is from the revealed word God mentioned cited above. Therefore, what is a conviction of the intellect is also a conviction of faith and what is of conviction of faith should be expressed tangibly for the good of the society. From the point of view of the Bible; work is the foundation for human existence. And this human existence implies the holistic dimension of human being- spiritual, physical, intellectual, and emotional. It is the command and the will of God that we work and earn for the daily bread. This calls for sincere commitment to any assigned work. This is the basis of work ethic and work culture without which no society can develop. What is ironical is that a Christian state like ours has become least in progress and development but high index in corruption. If work ethic is strictly maintained to a certain degree, then we will not be facing this inversion relationship between development and corruption. One of the reasons for the European’s high degree of work ethic and work culture is the doctrine of Calvin’s Predestination. According to Max Weber it was John Calvin who introduced

the theological doctrines which combined with those of Martin Luther to form a significant new attitude toward work. Calvin taught that all men/women must work, even the rich, because to work was the will of God. It was the duty of men/women to serve as God’s instruments here on earth, to reshape the world in the fashion of the Kingdom of God, and to become a part of the continuing process of His creation. Men/women were not to lust for easy living without some way or rather work in the true sense of the term. Earnings were thus to be reinvested over and over again, ad infinitum. In this way the society pave the way for further development and reinventing God’s creation here on earth. What is striking in all these arguments is that work has an intrinsic value because in work we realize our finiteness, we become more humane, we continue the process of God’s creation. Progressive development is the fruit of systematic implementation of work ethic. However, this is not taking place in Nagaland. We have the best churches and perhaps even the biggest churches in the Indian subcontinent and yet the public utility buildings are in shambles which resemble our attitude and philosophy of life though. There are some people, for days together, will not go to office for work and yet it doesn’t prick their conscience that they are drawing full salary against their work. Many of the government school teachers when they are posted in rural areas or in some of the subdivisions of Kiphere, Mon, Tuensang, Phek, Peren etc they would send their substitutes and share the salary. When acute family situation demands it is understandable, however, notwithstanding their secured jobs and handsome pay, some do business to accrue more income. In some villages, the village education committee fix a rate for such kind of proxy teachers. We have become immune and silent spectators of the deprived conditions of our society. We don’t want to raise our voice against the unjust system that is prevailing. But when it comes to the core of our ego we will fight till our last breath. We all know the deplorable road conditions in our state, and yet very few bother to ask and demand for our civic right. When public facilities are half done and abandoned no one is there to raise the issue, but when the women folk demanded a representation of 33% in Urban Local Body election, there

Coronavirus: A Christian response

and terror strikes: Look forward to the coming King: Luke 21:9, Do not be frightened.. the end will not come right away. Do not worry or be frightened. Why? God is in control. He is orchestrating every detail of these occurrences under his Sovereign will and power (Read the book of Revelation). God is on his throne. He reigns and He will reign forever (Revelation 4, 5, 7, 11, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22). Remember Isaiah 45:7, “I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.” Our wellbeing and our disaster is in God’s hand. The caveat here is that we do not foolishly become irresponsible with our God-given freedom: A man reaps what he sows (Galatian 6:7). Luke 21:28; When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Is Jesus coming back for the Second time? Yes, He will. He promised He will and Christians should look forward to His coming (Rev. 22:7, 12, 20). In one sense, we are to rejoice that the Day of the Lord is at hand (“Lift up their heads” a symbol of rejoicing, Bible

Knowledge Commentary, p. 257). We are to rejoice because the redemption of our souls will bring about the total redemption of our bodies. Be alert and Pray Fervently: Matthew 24:42; “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come….So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. The act of watchfulness and readiness is paralleled with prayer. These distressing occurrences are to awaken the believers to be sober and pray more fervently. Christians are not to freak out but to be aware of the times we are living in. We are to pray for the affected patients to be healed and realize the power of God in their lives. We are also called to pray for them to call upon the name of Christ so that they may be saved (Romans 10:13). We are to pray for the doctors (to be protected) and the scientists find out the cure to the pandemic viruses. We are also to pray for the protection of believers from these dreadful diseases that has come upon the earth (Luke 21:36; Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able

to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man”). Keep the fire of prayer burning, Christians! Stay away from sin: Luke 21:34, 35;Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing (to eat, party and drink liquor excessively), drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Jesus warns the believers from activities that can weigh them down spiritually. Although the act of eating, drinking and partying is not condemned as sinful (excessively indulging in those acts are deemed sinful). Now we have to keep in mind that the message here is primarily for the believers. Believers are commanded to be careful of their hearts. In other words, Christians are not to rely on themselves to solve the issues of this life. Otherwise, the natural heart will automatically turn to natural solutions to find temporary relief like the rest of the worldly people. Once we give in to the worries, the desire for wealth and the pleasures of this world, the power

was violence on the road and our leaders have to seek shelter in military cantonment. On the issue of power sharing and governance, there is a sharp reaction against the women folk but for the drinking water in our capital and multiple taxes demanded on the people, poor infrastructure everyone is silent about them. For some people, days of absence from work is not an issue and the same people will be very much involved in Church activities and exhorting others to live according to Christian principles. In the name of the Lord’s programme, some are absent for days from work and it never occur to them that they are failing their duty. In the earthly matters, Jesus is very straight forward. “Pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar and God what belongs to God” (Mt 22:21, NJB). Here the context is tax nevertheless; we cannot deny the fact that Jesus reiterates our allegiance to our temporal authorities and duties. Faith has become a private affair, a show of one’s devotion, focussing on the celebration part, though in itself it is important and necessary to bind people together, however, faith and work have to correlate inextricably as letter to James exemplifies to this fact. “Faith without deed is useless” (James 2:21, NJB). James goes on by quoting Abraham that faith becomes complete through good deeds (James 2: 22, NJB). Here good deed is always accompanied by sound moral judgement and ethical principles that demand from every sensible human being. We have well furnished churches in our villages equipped with latest acoustics for our worship experiences but the Lord is not interested in formalism of religion without adequate justice and fairness in society. “I hate, I scorn your festivals. I take no pleasure in your solemn assemblies. When you bring me burnt offerings, your oblations, I do not accept them and I do not look at your communion sacrifices of fat cattle... let me hear none of your strumming on lyres, but let justice flow like water, and uprightness like a never failing stream” (Amos 5:21-24, NJB). Therefore, we may reiterate that, work by its very definition demands a just approach backed up by ethical values to bring true transformation to human society. It is this ideal that we strive for and in the process of that our quality of life is affected through work and in work. Thus recognizing the virtue by which we cooperate in establishing a just society. Fr Vemedo J Kezo

of darkness will blind our eyes and hearts from the dangers that awaits us (Mark 4:19). Therefore, we need to keep Jesus’ warning at bay: Be careful (Luke 21:34). Notice the phrase in verse 35, “it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth,” nobody can escape these troubled times. The time of drowsiness is coming and will come upon all Christians (as is also depicted in the Parable of the 10 Virgins, Matthew 25:5). Therefore, Christians should be prepared to face the impending slothfulness that is slowly creeping in to

our Churches. The preparation for this onslaught then, is to stand on God’s Word, ask for the Holy Spirit’s illumination and empowerment to overcome sin, the habit of our time of prayer with God and communion of saints should be constantly abided in the lives of God’s people (Hebrews 10:24, 25). Victory belongs to us in Christ Jesus! (1 Corinthians 15:57) Prayer: May God rescue and deliver us from all evil and bring us safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Vebu Khamo, Seoul Christian University

Use dipper or low beam at night

Sir,

There have been several instances when driving in the evening or night that I lost view of the road because of vehicles from the opposite direction not using dipper or low beam. It is particularly dangerous when you are driving in the main road because if you suddenly slow down the speed of the car it could lead to vehicles behind bumping into your car or even cause accidents. It is more harrowing for those with poor eyesight. It is my sincere appeal to my fellow motorists to use low beam at night for their own safety and the safety of others. Aben, ADC Court, Dimapur

Govt ready to discuss all issues: Modi Opposition talks of anti-CAA protests, ‘worsening’ economy

NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): The Opposition on Thursday raised the issue of anti-CAA protests at an all party meeting and accused the government of “arrogance” in not reaching out to protestors, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted his dispensation is open to discuss all matters in Parliament’s budget session beginning from Friday. Modi also called for a “greater focus” on economic issues in the session and how India can gain in the prevailing global situation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi told reporters after the meeting, attended by 26 parties. They raised a host of issues including the nationwide protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, “worsening” economic situation and “rising” unemployment. They also demanded the release of detained political figures in Jammu and Kashmir. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters that opposition parties sought immediate release of former state chief minister Farooq Abdullah so that he could attend the session from Friday. Anand Sharma of the Congress added that the issue of some “incendiary” statements made by BJP leaders during the Delhi poll campaign was also raised and Modi was asked to intervene in the matter. The Election Commission on Thursday barred

TMC endorses AAP in Delhi polls NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has thrown its weight behind the AAP for the Delhi polls, with its national spokesperson Derek O’ Brien on Thursday uploading a video endorsing not just Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal but all AAP candidates. Banerjee and Kejriwal have shared a cordial relationship over the years, with the Delhi CM coming out in support of his West Bengal counterpart during the general elections in 2019 and also during her face-off with the Centre over Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar. Banerjee too on her part condemned attacks on Kejriwal during the general elections and lashed out at the BJP over the issue.

Union minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Verma from campaigning for three and four days respectively for their objectionable remarks. Joshi said the prime minister told the leaders that parties should not confine themselves to mere “charcha” (debate) but should have rich and structured discussion on every issue. In his concluding remarks, Modi welcomed the suggestions of most members that the session should focus on the prevailing economic situation in the country, an official statement later said. “Most of the members have asked for discussion on the economic situation concerning the country. I welcome this and we need to discuss the economic issues as suggested by you all. We should focus on how we can turn the global scenario in favour of India,” he said. “In this budget session and in the beginning of the

new year, if we can give a proper direction to the country’s economy, it would be in the best interest of the country,” he said, according to the statement. Referring to various other issues raised by opposition parties, Modi said there should be an open discussion on all. He asked the leaders at the meeting to see to it that they contribute to increasing the productivity of the session and Parliament. “This is about the productivity of the session and the Parliament. In the last two sessions, we saw the increased productivity and the great public response in favour of it. As people’s representatives, it is our responsibility to increase the productivity of the House, while we discuss all issues with an open mind,” he said. Asked about the opposition’s charge that the government is being arrogant in not reaching out to anti-

CAA protestors, Joshi noted that the bill was passed by Parliament following a long discussion and asked rival parties to introspect their role in these protests. The BJP has accused the Congress and other opposition parties of inciting protests and violence against the law which, the ruling party has asserted, does not affect the citizenship of any Indian. In his remarks, Azad said Parliament’s sessions have been shortened gradually by the government. He said opposition parties are willing to back the government on its legislative agenda if it is in national and public interest. He then accused the government of focussing merely on the passage of its bills and spoke about the nation-wide protests against the CAA. “We brought the government’s attention to these protests. The government has displayed arrogance by not reaching out to protestors to hear their concerns... Economic condition is worsening, GDP growth is down and unemployment is at its peak,” he said. Jo s h i r e j e c t e d t h e charge that the government has been reducing the duration of sessions and noted that opposition parties have often opposed the move to extend sessions. The government’s legislation agenda for the budget session has 45 bills, including seven financial items and two ordinances, Joshi said.

NPCC: Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K Therie, has expressed shock over the sudden passing away of former Minister, Z. Obed. In a condolence message, Therie recalled that when he was still in middle school “uncle Obed’s name was well known” for his abilities in football. Later on, NPCC president said Obed rose to the highest post of Administration and was feared for his uncompromising discipline. He was trusted by all, Therie said. Also, recalling his brief association with Obed in the Council of Ministers under the leadership of Dr. SC Jamir, Therie said late Obed was a dictionary of all the events, law and rules. “Late Z. Obed was a strong and decisive man and a staunch believer of equality, socialist, secular and democratic principles,” Therie said, adding that he stood tall for what he believed in even if it meant having to withstand the tide. In the loss of Obed, NPCC president said Nagaland has lost an irreplaceable, wise leader. On behalf NPCC rank and file and his wife, Therie conveyed condolences to Mrs. Naro Obed and children and prayed that the Lord give them strength and solace to overcome the painful parting.

the most trying times. Toy said Obed served as chief secretary from 1980-1982 and then again from 19871989, adding that the people of Nagaland have lost a pioneering leader. Toy prayed that God grant comfort and solace to the bereaved family members at this time of great grief. NDPP: NDPP president Chingwang Konyak in a condolence message said he as a cabinet minister had the opportunity to have worked with Obed when the latter was the chief secretary in the later part of 1980s. Chingwang said he found Obed to be an efficient and straightforward bureaucrat with conscientious determination to serve the government and the people. Unlike many Nagas, Chingwang said tribalism was something totally absent in his psyche, and all and sundry who met him recalled this fact. In his passing away, NDPP president said Nagas have lost a gem of a leader, an individual and a personality, and the void created by his demise would be difficult to fill. NDPP president on behalf of the party rank and file and his family conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed to the Almighty to grant solace to them at this hour of grief.

NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): Private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB) on Thursday said it will withdraw a case concerning dilution of promoters’ shareholding in the bank which it had filed against the RBI in the Bombay High Court. Kotak Mahindra Bank said the RBI has given its in-principle acceptance for reducing promoters’ shareholding to 26 per cent of the paid-up voting equity share capital (PUVESC) of the bank within six months from the date of final approval of the regulator. The RBI had asked the bank to cut promoter shareholding to 20 per

voting rights to 15 per cent of the PUVESC from April 1, 2020, onwards. Thereafter, the promoters will not purchase any further paid-up voting equity shares of the bank till the percentage of promoters’ shareholding reaches 15 per cent of PUVESC or such higher percentage as may be permitted by the RBI from time to time, it added. The RBI also gave inprinciple approval that the promoters will be entitled to purchase paid-up voting equity shares up to 15 per cent of the PUVESC of the bank or such higher percentage as may be permitted in the future, and exercise voting rights on such shares, it said further. “Our board of directors has resolved to abide by the above. EU Parl clears deal; UK set to exit EU today

During the final vote on the Withdrawal Agreement of the United Kingdom, MEPs sang traditional farewell song “Auld Lang Syne”. (European Parliament)

BRUSSELS, JAN 29 (AP): Britain’s departure from the European Union was backed by European lawmakers Wednesday, after a debate that mixed warm words of love with hardheaded warnings to the country not to seek too many concessions during upcoming trade talks on a future relationship. The European Parliament overwhelmingly approved Britain’s departure terms from the EU — the final major decision in the four-year Brexit saga. The vote was 621 to 49 in favor of the Brexit deal that British Prime Minister Boris

Johnson negotiated with the other 27 EU leaders in the fall of last year. While backing Britain’s departure in the wake of the country’s vote to leave in a referendum in June 2016, EU countries are already preparing for the possibility that talks on a new trade deal with Britain could collapse by the end of the year, and no-deal contingency planning for a chaotic end to the transition period is necessary. After Britain’s departure on Friday, the U.K. will remain within the EU’s economic arrangements until the end of the year though

it won’t have a say in policy as it will not be a member of the EU anymore. “We will always love you and you will never be far,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on a day when some legislators were moved to tears. Britain is the first country to leave the EU and for many in Europe its official departure at 11 p.m. London time on Friday, Jan. 31 is a moment of enormous sadness and reduces the number in the bloc to 27. The parliament’s chief Brexit official, Guy Verhofstadt, said that “this vote is not an adieu.”

Pak not to evacuate its citizens from Wuhan in ‘solidarity’ with China Islamabad, Jan 30 (PTI): Pakistan government has decided not to evacuate its citizens from the coronavirus-hit Wuhan city to show “solidarity” with its all-weather ally, a senior official announced on Thursday though four Pakistani nationals have contracted the deadly disease in China. There were up to 800 Pakistanis studying in various universities in Wuhan – a city of 11 million people which has been quarantined by the Chinese authorities in an effort to stem the spread of the deadly virus that has killed 170 people and infected nearly 8,000 others. Pakistan has decided not to evacuate its nationals from China in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said. “We believe that right now, it is in the interest of our loved ones in China (to stay there). It is in the largest interest of the region, world, country that we don’t evacuate them now,” he was quoted as saying by Dawn News. “This is what the WHO is saying, this is China’s policy and this is our policy as well. We are standing with China in full solidarity,” he said. “Right now the government of China has contained

this epidemic in Wuhan city. If we act irresponsibly and start evacuating people from there, this epidemic will spread all over the world like wildfire,” Mirza said. On Wednesday, Mirza confirmed that up to four Pakistani students in China were diagnosed with the coronavirus. “That number remains at four. It has not increased,” he said on Thursday. Mirza said that the Pakistan government’s decision not to evacuate its people from Wuhan did not mean that it didn’t care about them. He said Pakistan’s embassy in China was in contact with the Pakistani citizens. He said that the government believes that China’s policies to contain the virus were adequate. “Government cares about its citizens just as much as their own families. But we don’t want to take an emotional decision and become a reason for the spread of this disease,” he said. However, some worried Pakistani students in Wuhan have complained that they are not being taken care of by the Chinese authorities and demanded immediate evacuation in a social media post earlier this week, The Nation newspaper reported.

PNB fraud case: Nirav Modi remanded until February 27 LONDON, JAN 30 (PTI): Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, fighting extradition to India on charges over the nearly USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case, was produced for a regular remand hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Thursday and further remanded in custody until February 27. The 48-year-old, who has been lodged at Wandsworth Prison in southwest London, appeared via videolink from prison before District Judge David Robinson. “I am told that your case is proceeding in accordance with the directions

BEIJING, JAN 30 (PTI): The nationwide death toll from China’s novel coronavirus epidemic has jumped to 170 with 38 more fatalities reported mainly from the worst-affected central Hubei province, the government said on Thursday, while confirming more than 1,700 new infections. The coronavirus outbreak began in Wuhan, capital of China’s Hubei province, in December and has now spread across the globe. The Chinese authorities are trying to contain the epidemic while other countries, including India, are working on plans to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan and other cities in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called the coronavirus a “demon” which should be brought under control, pledging that the government would be transparent and release information on the virus in a “timely” manner. coronavirus had been reported in 31 provinciallevel regions and in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps by the end of Wednesday. A total of 170 people have died of the disease, it said. It said in its daily report that 1,370 patients remained in critical conditions, and 12,167 people were suspected of being infected with the virus by the end of Wednesday. A total of 124 people have been discharged from hospital after recovery. A total of 1,737 new confirmed cases, including the first in Tibet, and 4,148 new suspected cases, and 38 deaths - 37 in Hubei Province and one in Sichuan Province - were reported by Wednesday. Also, 131 patients became seriously ill, and 21 people were discharged from hospital after recovery, it said. A total of 88,693 close contacts had been traced, the commission said, adding that among them, 2,364 were discharged from medical observation on Wednesday, with 81,947 others still

under medical observation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. By the end of Wednesday, 10 confirmed cases had been reported in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, seven in Macao Special Administrative Region and eight in Taiwan, the commission said. A number of global airlines, including Air India, British Airways, Lion Air and Indigo airlines on Wednesday suspended their flights to Chinese cities as Beijing struggled to contain the rapid spread of the virus. India, the US, the UK and Germany have already issued travel advisories against travelling to China. Beijing too has been asking Chinese not to travel at home and abroad in view of the virus. Air India suspended its flights on Delhi-Shanghai route from January 31 to February 14. IndiGo airlines also suspended its flights on the BengaluruHong Kong route from February 1 and on the Delhi-Chengdu route from February 1 to 20.

The father son duo were reportedly the only individuals to represent India in the record making event. Ahoto Sema, chairman of LFIS propagated that governments around the world especially in India should incorporate climate change and environment in the school curriculum. Aaron echoed the same concern by displaying a placard which read: “I, Aaron Akivito Sema, 12 years from Nagaland LFIS can stand humbly tall at this highest altitude for the cause of Climate Change, why can’t you?! Let’s be the change!”

18 super models from 10 different countries walked the ramp to create the history. The journey to Kala Patthar (above Mt Everest base camp) was started on January 17 from Lukla and all the super models trekked till Kala Patthar in nine days. The fashion show lasted for an hour in 5644 meters above sea level. The Mt. Everest Fashion Runway was organised for the climate change. IOA confident Meghalaya can host National Games 2022

Correspondent

SHILLONG, JAN 30: A co-ordination and games technical conduct committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Thursday exuded confidence that Meghalaya can host the National Games, 2022. The three-member committee committee led by chairman Raj Kumar Sacheti, visited the sites proposed for building of a stadium, games village, and other facilities at Umsawli in the outskirts of Shillong. “The initial discussion we had yesterday and we saw the sites today and after a meeting with Sports minister, we are confident that Meghalaya can host the games in October-November 2022,” Sacheti said. He said the purpose of the visit was to find the status/update on the national games which the IAO has allotted to Meghalaya to host. “In terms of sites for sports village and stadium they (Meghalaya) proposed are suitable. They have two

consultants for the venue design, and the other which is preparing the reports and other things. With these parameters, we are confident that they are fully prepared and the games can happen in October-November 2022,” he explained. Sacheti who was special adviser for the 12th South Asian Games, which Shillong co-hosted along with Guwahati in 2016, informed that the government has already handed over the green field, and lands have been handed over. However, he said the State government is now waiting from the ministry of social justice as they are preparing for the cabinet approval for the bidding documents and once the government get the approval, they will invite the tender. Asked what kind of magic can be done so that Meghalaya can complete the massive sports infrastructure within two years, Sacheti said, “... If you have the will power, if you decide to do it,

how much time will it take? We have two and half years, and with these timelines, they have prepared all the tender documents and everything. If the bidding documents are out then major construction work will start in June and yes we can achieve the target.” Sacheti also said that two and half years is a good time to construct the venue if they can start by the June timeline. Asked if it is true that the 39th national games in Meghalaya will be held in 2023, Sacheti said, “We had a discussion with the government and when the IOA had allotted the games to Meghalaya, they wanted it to be held in 2022 as it coincides with the 50th year of statehood celebration. For that reason, we have a firm decision with the government which is keen to host the games in 2022. So we will submit the report to IOA and I am 100 per cent sure we will have the slot for 2022. In due course we will submit the report.”

India- NZ T20I series: India to experiment Aus Open: Djokovic beats Federer in straight sets to reach final

Wellington, Jan 30 (PTI): An unassailable lead has opened up the window for experimentation but there will be no letup in India’s intensity when they face a heartbroken New Zealand team in the fourth T2o International here on Friday. Mohammed Shami and Rohit Sharma combined to pull off a thrilling win via a Super Over in the third game for a 3-0 lead and a maiden T20I series win on New Zealand soil. There is only a short turnaround time for the last two matches, back-toback in Wellington and Mt. Maunganui on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Both teams spent Thursday travelling from Hamilton to Wellington, and with a similar tight schedule for the final game of the series as well, there seems to be little chance of nets for either match. While a five-match T20I series is a rarity, India’s early victory means both sides can contemplate various permutations in light of the T20 World Cup later in the year. From an Indian perspective, need of the hour is to find a balance between

experimentation and the winning desire. Both skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri pride themselves on a win-at-all-times mentality, and they have a rare chance to blank out a 5-0 sweep in this T20I series, thus etching out a slice of history. Kohli even mentioned the same in the post-match presentation at Seddon Park on Wednesday night. India wouldn’t need to change too much to retain a near full-strength playing eleven. There are obvious contenders for certain spots in both batting and bowling department should experimentation kick in. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are waiting for opportunities, with the former expected to get a look-in. Pant’s call-up would depend on which batsman is left out, and whether KL Rahul will continue to keep wickets. While the top trio is assured of places, Shreyas Iyer has been in superb touch and can claim to pin down a spot on his own as well. Both Manish Pandey and Shivam Dube need more game time as well. Any of the top four can be rested over

the next two games. Indeed it wouldn’t be a stretch of imagination if one of Kohli and Rohit Sharma were alternately rested in Wellington and Mt. Maunganui. Such a move would allow the youngsters to keep their spots whilst maintaining the experience in the side too. More changes are to be expected in the bowling department. Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Navdeep Saini are waiting in the wings. All three may not get a look-in immediately. Rest assured though, the team management is sure to rotate a spinner and pacer each. Sundar is part of Kohli’s new-ball strategy on the big Australian grounds, so he can expect a run-in over the next two games. Saini could replace Shardul Thakur, especially if Sundar adds his batting depth to the lower order. The final question would be over Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion. While he had an off night in Hamilton, there ought to be thoughts about his workload. He is part of both the ODI and Test squads, and is a shoe-in for the T20 World Cup later on as well.

PBL: Li, Yiu power NE Warriors to victory

HYDERABAD, JANUARY 30: A day after losing to Hyderabad Hunters, North Eastern Warriors bounced back to beat the Mumbai Rockets in the second tie of the double header at the Star Sports Premier Badminton League held at the GMC Balayogi Sats Indoor Stadium here in Hyderabad today. The Warriors were in control of the tie right from the start with Michelle Li, Lee Cheuk Yiu and the mixed doubles pair of Lee Yong Dae and Kim Ha Na each fetching a win for the team. The result meant the former runners-up Rockets are on a four-match losing streak and are yet to open their account in the fifth edition of the PBL. Michelle Li had stunned world champion PV Sindhu a day ago when the Warriors clashed with the Hyderabad Hunters. It wasn’t much different today as well as the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist staved off a challenge from rising talent Shriyanshi Pardeshi to win the Trump match,

Michelle Li has made an instant impact for North Eastern Warriors.

15-9, 15-11. 2020 Indonesia Masters semi-finalist Lee Cheuk Yiu had previously lost both his BWF meetings to 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap with their most recent match happening at the India Open last March. But this time it was a very different version of the North Eastern Warriors shuttler who was riding high on the confidence of a good start to the new season. Yiu’s aggression

and quick footwork made life difficult for the Indian who conceded the opening game 12-15. Kashyap, however, was able to remain close on Lee’s heels at 7-8 in the second game but a barrage of scorching smashes from the Warriors ace took the game away from the Mumbai shuttler. Lee’s pace and power was too much for the Indian to handle as Lee raced away to 14-7. Kashyap was able to make

a late push briefly as he took four points in a row. The Hong Kong ace made no mistake after that as he wrapped up the match 1512, 15-11 to seal the tie for North Eastern Warriors. Earlier, the legendary Lee Yong Dae and Kim Ha Na displayed some steely resolve and grit to grind out a 15-7, 5-15, 15-10 win against Mumbai’s Kim Sa Rang and Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth in the mixed doubles rubber.

ISL: Sandhu heroics help Bengaluru secure three points Bengaluru, Jan 30 (IANS): Bengaluru FC secured a narrow 1-0 win against Hyderabad to keep pace with the top spot aspirants in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Kanteerava Stadium here on Thursday. Nishu Kumar’s seventh minute strike turned out to be enough for the hosts to claim full points as Hyderabad failed to convert multiple chances including a penalty strike. The Blues are now second in the standings with 28 points from 15 games, while Hyderabad continued their woeful run and remain bottom of the table. Nishu Kumar provided Bengaluru a stunning opening goal. Dimas Delgado’s corner delivery from the right towards the edge of the box was met with a ferocious volley that sent the ball into the back of the net. Hyderabad were alert to the situation and looked to get back into the game immediately. Nikhil Poojary cut in from the right flank and with the Bengaluru defence opting not to press, the

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

winger produced a curling effort that missed the frame of the goal by inches. The visitors were allowed their major opening in the 23rd minute when Suresh Singh fouled Marcelinho inside the box. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the Blues’ hero in goal as he kept out Marko Stankovic’s penalty attempt towards the bottom left corner and then saved the rebound by Bobo. Bengaluru missed another chance to double their lead soon after the restart. With both teams looking to make inroads into their respective final third, a simple pass from Juanan was flicked into the path of Udanta by Khabra. The

Hyderabad defence failed to properly clear the ball and it fell for Brown who couldn’t get a shot away in time before Hyderabad goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani made the save. Brown had another chance to score in the 55th minute when he cut in from the left but from a one-onone scenario, Kattimani rushed off his line and made himself big to deny the striker. The Blues took control of the game in midfield and denied the visitors space to operate as the second-half wore on. New Bengaluru signing Nili Perdomo could have scored on his debut after coming on as a substitute, only to see the goalpost deny him twice in quick succession. Bengaluru were almost left to rue those misses when Hyderabad substitute Liston Colaco entered the box after a lovely one-two with Adil Khan, but his shot from point-blank range was tipped away spectacularly by Gurpreet, helping his side clinch all three points.

Kolkata , J an 3 0 (IANS): Goal-machine Bala Devi, who on Wednesday made history after being roped in by Scottish club Rangers FC, feels this exposure will further propel her to get better and she is confident of scoring a lot of goals in Scotland riding on her reservior of experience back home. Rangers FC announced the signing of Bala from Manipur Police Sports Club, subject to international clearance. The 29-year-old will join the club on an 18month deal after a successful spell on trial at Rangers in November. This will make Bala the first Indian woman to become a professional footballer anywhere in the world and she also becomes the Rangers’ first Asian international footballer. “I had confidence. For 14 years, I have represented India, 17 years I played for my state (Manipur) and I have played in Europe twice. I feel, maybe, if I give my best I can do it. I know I can score goals there too like I do here,” Bala said. Bala is the current topscorer for India with 52 goals. She also has over 100 goals in 120 games at the domestic level besides being two-time AIFF Women Player of the Year (2015, 2016). Bala has also skippered the national team

in an international career which began when she was 15 years old. “It all started when I used to play football with the boys back home,” she said. “I always beleived girls could play, when in 2005 I played for India in Korea, scored goals, I felt we can do better than them too.” Bala has already had one stint in Maldives with New Radiants Sports Club, and said at 29, the move comes at the right time in her career. “It was very different (in Maldives). 25 days to one month in Maldives I spent with New Radiant Sports Club. That was one step in the right direction. We did not know what is a league and how it is played. “I was very confident because I’ve been playing for the national team for 14 years as I said, so I felt that

I can make it if I tried my best. We played a friendly there and I scored twice, and I’m sure I will score in the league as well,” she said about her trials in Scotand. In Bala’s case, the onus was on the club to legally clear her contract as she did not automatically fit in the eligibility criteria to play in the United Kingdom. She was granted the UK work permit on a special exemption. The eligibility rules for a woman footballer to ply her trade in the UK specify that the player’s country should be ranked in the top40 of the FIFA rankings, and that the player should have played in a minimum of 75 per cent of international matches in the last two years. As per the latest rankings, the Indian women’s team is ranked 57th. Bala, thus, did not fulfill the eligibility criteria.
