MUMBAI, JAN 29 (PTI): Social activist Anna Hazare has announced that he would launch a hunger strike from Wednesday over the “non-fulfillment” of assurances by the Centre and the Maharashtra government on the appointment of Lokpal and passage of Lokayukta Act in the state respectively. In his letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, dated January 28, Hazare said he would launch the agitation in his village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, the Fadnavis Cabinet Tuesday decided to bring the office of Maharashtra Chief Minister under the jurisdiction of Lokayukta. Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan, who has been acting as an emissary between the government and the activist, urged Hazare to cancel the agitation, claiming that almost all the demands made by the activist have been fulfilled. Hazare, however, said he would not call off the agitation till the Lokayukta Act becomes a reality.
MIG scheme will raise living standards: NPCC DIMAPUR, JAN 29 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has welcomed the announcement of minimum income guarantee (MIG) scheme by Congress president Rahul Gandhi and asserted that that it would leave a lasting impact on crores of Indians. In a press release, NPCC president K Therie claimed that the “next generation” social policy would eliminate extreme poverty and hunger both among rural and urban dwellers as it would fill the vacuum in urban areas left by MGNREGA. Therie pointed out that unlike BJP’s “anti-people” demonetisation unleashed upon the nation where the poor were the hardest hit and which left a severe impact on their economic and financial lives, the commitment of Congress towards poverty eradication and redistribution of resources for inclusive growth had once again been proved, especially in the backdrop of MGNREGA, which had been acknowledged by the United Nations as one of the best poverty alleviation schemes globally. Therie claimed that Congress had done it in the past and, given an opportunity, would do it again.

lieve, if implemented, it will endanger the lives and identity of indigenous communities of Assam and the Northeast.” Meghalaya chief minister and NPP chief Conrad Sangma said the convention of north east regional parties decided to cohesively oppose the Bll’s passage in parliament and also unanimously decided that a delegation of all participating political parties from the Northeast along with other parties, to meet the President and the Prime Minister in the next few days and apprise them of their opposition against the bill. Though many regional parties were incensed with the manner in which the BJP rode roughshod over their
sentiments, yet most were not prepared to snap ties with the BJP and the NEDA. Asked about this, Sangma refused to comment and instead saying the parties would meet later to chalk out their course of action. Also when contacted over phone, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio who head a coalition government with the BJP , told this correspondent that there was no question of snapping ties with BJP. Rio said though his government respected the sentiments of the people of the north east and stood by them in opposing the Bill. He expressed the hope the
BJP would be sensitive and not attempt to have it passed in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in Assam severed its ties with the BJP and pulled out of the BJP-led government in the state. A p a r t f r o m N P P, NDPP, MNF, JD (U) and AGP, the other political parties which attended the convention were United Democratic Party, People’s Democratic Front, Hill State People’s Democratic Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (all Meghalaya based), NPF (Nagaland), and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura.

Late George Fernandes

Fernandes was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, which had forced him out of the public eye for several years, and had recently contracted swine flu, his long time associate, Jaya

Ironically, he became the Railways minister
in 1989 under V.P. Singh’s National Front coalition government, comprising mostly Left leaning parties. Despite being a staunch critic of the RSS, Fernandes joined the BJP-led NDA government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 and 1999, in which he was appointed the defence minister.

CNTC directs units
In the light of repeated snub by “some bureaucrats and political leaders” in not extending meeting invitations to it in the past and including the proposed consultative meeting on January 31 with various NGOs and civil society groups at Chumukedima, Central Nagaland Tribes Council(CNTC) has directed its constituent units to not attend the said meeting called by the state government. CNTC in a statement slammed the deliberate attempt of those who tried to ignore its existence by thinking they would gain some mileage out of their “ignorant and arrogant attitude” adding instead, such have
spelt only “more setbacks in any major political decisions.” On the other hand, CNTC has questioned why “some bloc” are always invited with all their constituent units on any issue, while ignoring such a platform of major tribes? Further, CNTC has demanded to know as to how and why, instead, “the almost defunct and non-existent Naga Hoho” where majority of tribes from Nagaland are no longer members, has been invited? CNTC also pointed out that the “guardians of our Naga customary law” the Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) was also not invited and said it exposed “the shallowness of the invitation”. CNTC termed “ the so-called consultative meeting “ as an “eyewash as the cabinet has already resolved to oppose it.” Therefore, when the decision was already taken what is the point of “wasting time, energy and resources” asked CNTC.
CAB issue: NPF slams PDA govt’s U-turn
DIMAPUR, JAN 29 (NPN): Opposition NPF has expressed its amusement at the “latest decision” of the PDA cabinet backtracking from its “earlier decision not to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2016.” In a press release, NPF press bureau appreciated the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government for heeding the cries of the people, but claimed that the “sudden U turn” of the PDA government “clearly indicates” that something was amiss as it was only a few days ago the PDA was “stone hard on their earlier decision made on January 5, 2019 not to oppose the Bill.” NPF said PDA government’s decision to reject the bill all of a sudden was a welcoming step. It, however, asked what prompted them to retract all its “big utterances” made in the past few days citing Article 371 A and ILP as “a blanket shield” for the entire Nagas. Further, NPF questioned whether the state government has “firmly taken the decision” to oppose the Bill or was trying “to play another musical chair to the Nagas as a temporary relief measure for the time being.” While lauding the PDA government’s decision to reject the Bill, the NPF asked whether the government would again
backstep the call of the Naga people in the near future. NPF also expressed surprise at the “wavering and indecisiveness” of PDA government, which it said had at its cabinet meeting on January 7, 2019 appealed to the Centre to review the CAB, and has again called for consultative meeting with all tribal hohos, civil societies, NGOs, political parties and all stakeholders. NPF said this only showed their “incapability to take the Naga people for healthier growth.” NPF said if PDA government cared for the posterity of the Nagas and was against CAB, what was the need for PDA government to hold a consultative when the whole Naga populace was against the enforcement of the Bill?” “Or the spin doctors of the PDA leaders have certain motive to impress the Naga people and retain their chairs,” it asked. PDA government, NPF said must realise from the outcome of the public attendance on the Republic Day, which it claimed was “a clear indication” that Naga people were totally denouncing the Bill. To top it all, the opposition party said NDPP-led PDA government, which was so vocal not to oppose the CAB, on seeing public reactions and series of agitations and opposition from all corners, decided to backtrack from their (Cont’d on p-7) original stand.
