Dimapur celebrates 70th Republic Day

NEW DELHI, JAN 26 (PTI): Welcoming the Supreme Court decision to uphold the validity of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Union minister Arun Jaitley Friday warned that defaulters cannot get away for long. “The upholding of the provisions that bar the defaulting promoters from bidding is both ethical and proper - otherwise the defaulter will continue to manage the company with only the banks taking a haircut,” he said in a tweet. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the IBC saying “the defaulters’ paradise is lost” and the economy’s rightful position has been regained. “The Supreme Court judgement upholding the validity of the IBC is a welcome decision. The Bank defaulters cannot get away for long,” he said. With regard to the controversial provision of section 29A of the IBC, which dealt with the rights of erstwhile promoters to participate in the recovery process of a corporate debtor, the court said that “a resolution applicant has no vested right for consideration or approval of its resolution plan”.

PDA decision on CAB unforgivable: NPCC DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has described the boycott of Republic Day celebrations across Nagaland as “a slap in the face” for both People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in the state and BJP government at the centre for “disregarding the voices of people” against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). NPCC through its communication department said the northeast region was in turmoil due to blatant attitude of BJP to push through CAB, which is now pending in Rajya Sabha. Congress, however, stated that the PDA government has been “caught in a self defeating situation” with its “feeble” explanation that defied the “very logic of our elected members’ ability to protect the interest of our people.” NPCC said the PDA cabinet decision on CAB was therefore “unforgivable”. It added that any sensible PDA legislator must resign in protest if they had any concern left for the people. Congress party affirmed its stand that CAB be scrapped in total since it was “highly polarising and dangerous” for small state like Nagaland where unabated influx of migrants especially in Dimapur and other foothill areas threatened the demog-

raphy of state. It mentioned that AGP in Assam has parted ways with BJP due to CAB, NPP was threatening to “kick out” BJP in Meghalaya, MNF in Mizoram was all out against CAB and the BJP government in Manipur has passed resolution urging exemption of Manipur from CAB implementation. Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, however, stated that the “knee jerk reaction” of the PDA government and the “deafening silence” of BJP and its legislators was “an added insult to the collective conscience of the people.” Alleging that PDA government has “totally lost the confidence of the people as is evident from empty grounds during Republic Day celebrations”, the Congress reiterated its stand with the people of Nagaland in “totally opposing the communal CAB”, adding that it would not allow BJP to ride roughshod over the interest of the people. Further, the state Congress extend its solidarity with the NSF and ENSF and all their federating units for being in the forefront against CAB. It also appealed to all right thinking citizens cutting across political party affiliations to voice out in total unison and prevent “this dangerous communal bill”.

Low turnout at R-Day celebrations across Nagaland Odisha CM’s sister declines Padma Shri Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 26 (NPN): School students across the state were conspicuous by their absence during the 70th Republic Day celebration in response to the boycott call by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) against passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. In most of the district, the turn-out was also very low as the gallery seats and chairs meant for the public were empty. This Republic Day celebration witnessed the lowest turnout as school students, who normally participate in the parade, drill displays etc. refrained from doing so. Talking to Nagaland Post, NSF president Kesosul Christopher Ltu and general secretary Imtiyapang Imsong expressed happiness that the boy-

cott call not only received positive response from students’ body but the public as well. Ltu said such positive response was a clear sign to show the resentment towards the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “This message has to reach the Central government to remind them that are more to come if they still consider us to be sec-

ond class citizen of India,” he added. Commenting on Governor’s R-Day speech, Ltu said the state government had on several occasion clarified on Article 371(A). However, Governor being the head of the state should not sing to the tune of politicians, but speak out his mind and truth. Imtiyapang Imsong informed that reports from

across the state confirmed that none of the schools or students’ body in Nagaland took part in the R-Day celebrations. He thanked the general public and all the students’ unions for their cooperation and further appealed all to continue to support the federation, assuring that NSF “will not stop until the demand is fulfilled.”

BHUBANESWAR/NEW DELHI, JAN 26 (PTI): Eminent writer Gita Mehta, who is Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s elder sister, on Saturday declined to accept the Padma Shri award, saying its timing could be “misconstrued” in an election year. “I am deeply honoured that the Government of India should think me worthy of a Padma Shri but with great regret I feel I must decline as there is a general election looming and the timing of the award might be misconstrued, causing embarrassment both to the Government and myself, which I would much regret,” Mehta, who is the sibling of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and daughter of former CM Biju Patnaik, said in a statement from New York. Mehta’s declining of the Padma award, however, triggered a row in the state

that the whole episode showed the close links between the ruling BJD and the BJP. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik side-stepped a question about her refusal to accept the honour but congratulated all those from Odisha who have been chosen for the award. Gita Mehta (File) “I congratulate all the with the BJP saying her ac- Odias who got the Padma tion was “not appropriate” award,” he told mediaperand the Congress claiming sons here.
