Iran admits downing jetliner by mistake lies, and he requested “official apologies through diplomatic channels.” Iran’s acknowledgement of responsibility for the crash was likely to inflame public sentiment against authorities after Iranians had rallied around their leaders in the wake of Soleimani’s killing. The majority of the plane crash victims were Iranians or Iranian-Canadians.

Iranian officials had repeatedly ruled out a missile strike, dismissing such allegations as Western propaganda that officials said was offensive to the victims. The crash came just weeks after authorities quashed nationwide protests ignited by a hike in gasoline prices. Iran has been in the grip of a severe economic crisis since President Donald Trump withdrew the
US from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani blamed the shootdown of the plane in part on “threats and bullying” by the United States after the killing of Soleimani. He expressed condolences to families of the victims, and he called for a “full investigation” and the prosecution of those responsible.
Iran’s Guard accepts responsibility for plane shootdown
A
n Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander says his unit accepts “full responsibility” for the accidental shootdown of a Ukrainian passenger plane. In an address broadcast by state TV on Saturday, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh says that when he learned about the downing of the plane, which killed all 176 passengers on board, “I wished I were dead.” Iran’s armed forces say they mistook the passenger plane for a hostile target in the tense aftermath of Iran’s ballistic missile attack on two military bases in Iraq housing US troops. Gov cracks the whip on armed groups hampering road works DIMAPUR, JAN 11 (NPN): Taking serious note of rampant extortion by various armed factions, severely jeopardising the progress of road construction works in Nagaland, Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi has directed the DGP Nagaland and IG Assam Rifles (North) to take the most stringent actions against such elements and their patrons. During the review meeting held on Saturday at Police complex Chümoukedima along with senior officials and contractors including NHIDCL officials, Governor expressed shock that the anti-social elements had a free run hampering developmental projects. In order tackle such anti-social elements, Governor has directed DGP to set up an SIT (Special Investigation Team) for registration and focussed investigation of all cases against such elements. He also directed DGP to constitute a “Highway Construction Protection Force” to firmly deal with such elements and provide security to road construction personnel. A Raj Bhavan communiqué stated that Ravi, who

has always prioritized road sector, has been regularly monitoring the progress of Dimapur-Kohima fourlane project. Accordingly, the Governor reviewed the progress of construction of all the roads being built/upgraded under Central Government Schemes or Centrally Sponsored Schemes. Projects reviewed included 14 packages of 845.745 KMs being built by NHIDCL and 4 projects of 132.59 KMS funded by NEC being built by State Government. At the meeting, it was made known that one of the main reason for the slow progress and compromised quality was rampant extortions by anti-social elements, purportedly belonging to underground armed
organisations. It said that the contractors narrated their harrowing experiences as to how they were being threatened on a day to day basis for more and more ransom money and their officials including project managers being abducted for days together. They also disclosed how some of the engineers had to run away and never to return fearing for their safety and security. This has caused inordinate delay in completion of the projects. The Governor also decided to hold monthly review meeting to monitor progress and security of road projects. The meeting was attended by chief secretary, DGP, addl. CS, Home commissioner, commissioner & secretary Works & Housing, engineer-in-chief and chief engineer besides senior officials of NHIDCL and contractors. Ravi holds consultation with CSOs: Governor, Ravi also held a consultative meeting with the Dimapur based civil society organizations (CSOs) where various issues concerning the citizens of Dimapur were discussed. TEHRAN, JAN 11 (AP): Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Saturday acknowledged that it accidentally shot down the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed earlier this week, killing all 176 aboard, after the government had repeatedly denied Western accusations that it was responsible. The plane was shot down early Wednesday, hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on two military bases housing US troops in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen Qassem Soleimani in an American airstrike
in Baghdad. No one was wounded in the attack on the bases. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed his “deep sympathy” to the families of the victims and called on the armed forces to “pursue probable shortcomings and guilt in the painful incident.” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy issued a statement saying the crash investigation should continue and the “perpetrators” should be brought to justice. He said Iran should compensate victims’ fami-

SHILLONG, JAN 11: Reiterating that Meghalaya wants full exemption from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad K Sangma, Saturday rubbished reports that if the Inner Line Permit (ILP) was implemented in the State, the Sixth Schedule would be done away with. “That is not true at all. There was a simple observation that certain officials and certain political leaders had in Delhi saying that since we have exemption under Sixth Schedule, why would we need exemption under ILP from the CAA,” Sangma told reporters. “...There is no question of Sixth Schedule being removed as it is a protection and privilege
given to the people of the state. We are very firm as a government that there is no comprise with the Sixth Schedule,” he added. Meghalaya, which was formed as an autonomous state April 2, 1970 and as a fullfledged state Jan 21, 1972, after being carved out of Assam, is covered by Sixth Schedule provisions of the constitution. The chief minister said that the state government was very firm on implementing ILP in the State. “We want ILP to be implemented and that is the reason why we passed the resolution (in the State Assembly). Now we have to move with the government of India. There are challenges and nobody doubts that, but we will try to convince central government that this is something we required,” Sangma said.

Meghalaya Assembly had unanimously passed a government resolution urging the Centre to implement ILP in the state following the passage of CAA. “I have spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah. He has told me that as soon as he fixes a date, he will call me and I am hoping to hear from him very soon,” Sangma said. On the contentious CAA, the chief minister reiterated that Meghalaya wants full exemption from the Act. Conrad also informed that the existing Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016 would be implemented. Sangma said he held a meeting with DC East Khasi Hills district and political department where it was decided to speed up the implementation of the MRSSA, 2016.

NEW DELHI, JAN 11 (PTI): Army Chief Gen M M Naravane on Saturday asserted that the conduct of the 1.3 million-strong Army will be guided by its “allegiance” to the Constitution and its core values of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, comments which came in the backdrop of criticism that the military was politicised under his predecessor. Gen Naravane, addressing a press conference on the eve of the Army Day, also said that a “rebalancing” of the overall preparedness along the border with China has been initiated and a raft of measures are being taken including moving advanced weapon systems. Talking about his overall focus as chief of the Army, Gen Naravane said it will be ‘ABC’ -- “allegiance, belief and consolidation”, noting that protecting the core values of the Constitution will remain the driving

force of his personnel. “We swear allegiance to the Constitution of India. Be it officers or jawans, we have taken oath to protect the Constitution and that is what should guide us in all time and all our actions,” the Army Chief said. “What it translates into is also the core values which are enshrined in the Preamble to the Constitution which are justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. That is what we are fighting for,” he said. “We are deployed on the border safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial
integrity, it is to secure for our people these core values. And, I think, that is what we and I would like to say that we need to keep in mind,” he added. Gen Naravane took charge as Army Chief on December 31, succeeding Gen Bipin Rawat. In his three-year tenure as Army Chief, Gen Rawat faced allegations of not remaining politically neutral and allowing politicisation of the Army. Last month, he triggered a huge row after he publicly criticised people leading protests over the
new citizenship law, saying leadership is not about guiding masses to carry out arson and violence across the country. He was slammed by opposition parties as well as former military officers who stressed that the armed forces must follow the decades-old principle of serving the country and not any political force. Gen Naravane also said that his other focus areas would be ‘ITPQ’ -which he explained as Integration, Training Personnel and Quality. He said integration of purposes within the Army and with the two other forces would be a key area for him. “The formation of the Chief of Defence Staff and the creation of a department of military affairs is a very big step towards integration. We on our part will make sure that this is a success,” the Army chief said.
Drinking green tea linked to longer, healthier life: Study Mopong Hongkong range BEIJING, JAN 11 (AGENCIES): A new large-scale Chinese study has found that drinking tea at least three times a week could increase your chances of living a longer and healthier life. Carried out by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the new study looked at 100,902 Chinese adults who had no history of heart attack, stroke or cancer, and classified them into two groups based on their tea drinking habits: the habitual tea drinkers group drank tea three or more times a week; those in the never or nonhabitual tea drinkers group drank the beverage less than three times a week. The participants were then followed for around seven years. The findings, published Thursday in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, showed that those
in the habitual tea consumption group were more likely to enjoy more healthy years of life and longer life expectancy. For example, the researchers estimated that 50-year-old habitual tea drinkers would develop coronary heart disease and stroke 1.41 years later and live 1.26 years longer than those who never or seldom drank tea. Habitual tea drinkers also had a 20 percent lower risk of incident heart disease and stroke, a 22 percent lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke, and a 15 percent lower risk of all-cause death, compared with never or non-habitual tea drinkers. The team also investigated whether changing tea drinking habits could affect the risk of disease and death among a subset of 14,081 participants. After assess-
ing them at two different time points, they found that those who maintained their regular tea consumption at both surveys had a 39 percent lower risk of incident heart disease and stroke, 56 percent lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke, and 29 percent decreased risk of all-cause death, compared to consistent never or nonhabitual tea drinkers. “The
protective effects of tea were most pronounced among the consistent habitual tea drinking group,” said senior author Dr. Dongfeng Gu. “Mechanism studies have suggested that the main bioactive compounds in tea, namely polyphenols, are not stored in the body long-term. Thus, frequent tea intake over an extended period may be necessary for the cardioprotective effect.” The findings also suggest that drinking green tea was linked with around a 25 percent lower risk of incident heart disease and stroke, fatal heart disease and stroke, and all-cause death, however, no significant associations were found for black tea. Dr. Gu points out that a preference for green tea is unique to East Asia. “In our study population, 49 percent
of habitual tea drinkers consumed green tea most frequently, while only 8 percent preferred black tea. The small proportion of habitual black tea drinkers might make it more difficult to observe robust associations, but our findings hint at a differential effect between tea types.” The researchers also add that green tea is a rich source of polyphenols, which protect against cardiovascular disease and risk factors for the disease, such as high blood pressure. Black tea, on the other hand, is fully fermented. This process oxidizes the polyphenols and may cause them to lose their antioxidant effects. Black tea also tends to be served with milk, which previous research has shown may counteract the beneficial health effects of the drink.
