Naga Day observed in Kohima
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 10 (NPN): A disappointingly very low turn-out marked the observance of the first “Naga Day” celebration held at Khuochiezie (Kohima Local Ground) here on Wednesday under the aegis of Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR). The highlight of the day was the declaration by the delegates to affirm and uphold the Naga Hills Memorandum submitted to the Simon Commission on January 10, 1929 by the Naga Club on behalf of the Naga people. The event held under the theme “Nagas Without Borders” was hosted by the Angami Public Organisation (APO). More than 15 speakers delivered speeches harping on oneness and togetherness. Speaking on “Why Naga Day?”, peace activist, Niketu Iralu, said it was a day that took Nagas back to what had happened 89 years ago, to assess the distance Nagas had covered and what was achieved. He said many may not be thankful to the pioneers in 1929 who, by their declaration woke up the Nagas to go on long journey and

because of whom today, Nagas have reached thus far. Iralu said time has come to reject the errors of hate, fears and selfishness of the past and take Naga society forward. He said Nagas must appreciate and thank one another for what was achieved and also asked them to stop blaming each other for what was not achieved as the blame game only weakened unity. Niketu urged upon Naga people to lift each other up to do what was good for common goal instead of pulling down one another. “By making others great no one becomes smaller,” Iralu said. Further, Iralu said Nagas needed to reach out to one another and restore the
spirit of nationhood and people-hood. He said this was the compelling reason for Nagas to come together and celebrate Naga Day together. In his address on “Calling Home”, FNR convener, Rev. Dr. Wati Aier, said the soul of Naga history was alive and “Naga Day” was a testament that Nagas have victoriously emerged from the storms of the past as tragedies have taught Nagas to be a better and fit people. He said the day was like a great piece of art that was handed to the Nagas, a unique kaleidoscope of socio-cultural art, a collective and constructive art, created by the brushes of many painters.

Jayakumar alleged that traditionally BJP enter and make inroads into small states through backdoor by having alliance with regional parties. He illustrated this by saying that though BJP won only one seat in 2013 yet it has been manipulating NPF-led DAN coalition. He said the BJP agenda was to implement the RSS ideology of one nation, one religion and one food habit. The AICC secretary also appealed to the people of Nagaland not to get confused between the two forces in the country’s politics- the liberal secular and democratic force represented by Congress and other parties and the “communal, divisive and anti-minority” force represented by BJP and its allies. He also alleged that BJP’s real motive was to implement the agenda RSS of one nation, one religion
and one food habit. Jayakumar said Congress will not allow the BJP/ RSS agenda to be spread and fervently appealed to people of Nagaland to stop the advance of the BJP, the political wing of RSS. The AICC secretary also threw a challenge on the BJP’s regional allies in Nagaland on whether they can say they can be happy with BJP knowing that its ideology were totally in contrast with the “culture, mentality and lifestyle of the secular people of Nagaland”. He asked people of Nagaland to decide whether to let divisive forces set foot in the state. On the current economic downturn in the country, Jayakumar said India’s GDP had nose-dived from 8% in 2015-16 to 7.1% in 2016-17 and was set to further touch a low of 6.5% in 2017-18.

DIMAPUR, JAN 10 (NPN): All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary, Dr. K. Jayakumar, who is also in-charge of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, has made a clarion call to all former Congress leaders and functionaries to return back to the party fold in order to halt the advance of “divisive Hindutva forces” from making inroads in Nagaland. Addressing media per-
sons at Hotel Saramati here on Wednesday, Dr. Jayakumar said all charges against the former Congress members have been withdrawn by AICC so as to join hands and work for the party in the state and strengthen Rahul’s hand at the national level. He warned that wherever elections were held, communal forces divided people along religious lines. Jayakumar threw a challenge on Congress and potential allies to join hands to fight against such divisive forces.

Patton submitted his resignation letter to the NLA Speaker on January 10. The letter was also circulated on social media. Stating that “Naga Day” was to reaffirm the past, Rev. Aier said it was also a day to consolidates a culture of belonging and would continue to spread influences that Nagas were without borders. Dr. Aier asserted that Nagas today wanted to make a resolute shift from the myth of a timeless and unchanging past towards a right to dignity and an unsealed identity that was not at the expense of others. “Naga Day is a paradigm shift from our perpetual mindset of clinging on and looking backwards,” FNR convenor said. Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) president and NBCC general secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou
Keyho, in his address on “Celebrating Oneness”, said Nagas were a big family and the bigness transcended the demarcation of the border lines. He said over the years in Naga struggle, Nagas have however become selfish in trying to build and emerge in the smaller world, fencing oneself from common brotherhood rather than extending hands to lift up the weak and the suffering who cry for understanding and recognition. “The gathering today must kill this spirit only then true celebration will emerge in full bloom,” he said. He suggested three points needed for the celebration -- to create positive history for tomorrow by going back to the past glory of oneness and come out strong by asserting that unity was a must for true celebration of oneness to take place in one’s mind. Rev. Keyho asserted that the celebration of oneness should not become a one day celebration but must transcend the divided border lines so that Nagas can say truly in unison “We are Nagas without Borders”.
DIMAPUR, JAN 10 (NPN): Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) held a peaceful rally Wednesday, reiterating their demand for Aboi district. According to a press release by ADDC press secretary, Phongnyei Changkhu, 8345 people attended the rally. Phongnyei said that the ADDC started its quest for Aboi district in 2008, which reached a cabinet memo in the year 2011 that placed
Aboi at number one and Noklak at two according to preference. Phongnyei said while Noklak was declared a district in December 2017, “to the pleasure and satisfaction of all well wishers, including Aboi”, Aboi was overlooked. He further reminded that ADDC had also submitted a referendum to the government in 2017 along with district profile and No Objection Certificates from
Konyak union and neighbouring ENPO tribes. The rally follows an ultimatum submitted on January 2, for “immediate requisition of Aboi district prior to any other in the list, on or before January 10, 2018”. ADDC had not eliminated options to impose non-cooperation with state government, ban, strike, economic blockade or to “secede once and for all,” he added. ADDC held the view that Aboi was deserving of district status going by population, attainment of township, administrative start-ups, natural environment, government offices, security forces stationed and road connectivity. ADDC warned that they would only wait for a week or two for a positive response, failing which they will take their own course of action and the state government would be held responsible for “both past and future actions.”

problem. CMO added that Zeliang also informed Rajnath about the desire of the Naga people for a solution before conducting the elections as Centre was engaged in talks with different Naga political groups for an early solution. According to CMO, Rajnath Singh, after a patient hearing, reiterated that the government of India was
serious on solving the Naga political issue. CMO further stated that Zeliang submitted the resolution adopted by Nagaland Legislators Forum, parliamentarians and exparliamentarians on December 7, 2017 along with a copy of Nagaland Legislative Assembly resolution to press GoI for a solution before holding elections.
Imchen reiterates ‘solution before election’ Correspondent
Kohima, Jan 10 (NPN): Minister for health and family welfare, Imkong L. Imchen, while disagreeing with Government of India (GoI’s) Interlocutor for Naga Talks, R. N Ravi’s statement that Election Commission of India (ECI) is an independent body, said “the learned Interlocutor R.N. Ravi’s contention that it is an independent body is not a 100% correct position”. He was speaking at a press briefing at his official residence in Kohima on Wednesday. Imchen was referring to Ravi’s statement published on January 10. He added that ECI is a statutory constitutional body within the constitution of India and therefore fell within the government of India. He also called attention to the People’s Representation Act of 1951 according to which the ECI had to seek the advice of the government of India to conduct any elections if the situation was not conducive. Based on Ravi’s statement that “substantive issues have been, by and large resolved”, Imchen said “we are not setting any particular dateline to the government of India but our position was to let the Government of India (GoI), settle the Naga political issue first and then conduct elections.” According to Imchen, the demand to defer the elections was not a huge favour that the Naga people were imposing on the Government of India but was an expression of support for its efforts to solve the Naga issue. Imchen said, so far no individual or organization, political or social, had dis-
agreed with the proposal but they had all raised one voice for the sake of settlement of the Naga political issue. On Ravi’s statements that-- postponement of elections was “unlikely” unless there was “sufficient substantive change in the facts on the ground” and, “I believe an agreement resolving the Naga political issue could constitute such a change”, Imchen said that he was 100% in agreement, and the substantive change in the facts on the ground could be created by deferring the elections. On the statement of Ravi that the peace process was at an advance stage, Imchen said that an election may create a number of new, emergent issues which may result in obstruction of the peace process. He said that all Nagas had been viewing the Naga political issue with serious concern for more than 7 decades and their desire for a final solution was loud and clear. He appreciated R.N. Ravi on carrying out the difficult task, of the negotiations, thus far and added that the Naga people would remain ever grateful to him for his achievements on the issue. While recalling that he had raised the issue of the need for deferment of elections on September, 2017, he said it had nothing to do with personal political benefit. He said that he would be satisfied if the issue was settled, even if it is not perfect and with limitations, because this opportunity should not be missed. He also opined that the Naga negotiating groups should consider far sighted policies, exhibit diplomatic acumen and “give and take” for a “win-win situation” for both the parties (government of India and Nagas).
Banks warn of new mobile malware M U M B A I , J an 1 0 (Agencies): Banks are warning customers of the risk of their mobile banking credentials being stolen by malware masquerading as a Flash player sent to them through unwarranted messages or through pop-ups on websites. The warning follows an advisory by Quick Heal Security Labs that it has detected an Android Banking Trojan that targets over 232 banking apps, including those offered by Indian lenders, reported TNN. The malware is known as Android. banker.A2f8a (previously detected as Android.banker. A9480). According to Nitin Bhatnagar of SISA Information Security, the operation is similar to a phishing website. The malware works in the background and sends fake notifications, resembling those sent by banking applications. When users open these applications they are directed to fake login screens
that are then used by the attackers to steal and extract confidential data. The malware also intercepts SMSs sent by banks and is able to access one-time passwords . IDBI Bank, in a communication to its customers, has advised them to adopt best practices to continue using mobile banking in a more digitally secure manner. This includes not installing applications from untrusted sources and exercising caution while visiting unfamiliar sites for clicking links. The lender has also warned customers against using ‘jailbroken’ or ‘rooted’ mobiles for banking transactions. Jailbroken iPhones are those handsets that allow apps — not part of the official app store — to be installed on the phone. Rooting an Android device allows the user to make granular changes to the operating system, which could lead to malicious apps being installed if the user is careless.
