NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (PTI): Tense standoff between the CBI and the Kolkata police for the second day echoed in Parliament leading to a washout of the proceedings following opposition protests. Describing as “unprecedented” the Kolkata Police action against a CBI team, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday told Parliament this would lead to anarchy and pose a threat to the federal system. He warned that the Centre has the powers to deal with the “constitutional breakdown” in West Bengal. Singh called as unfortunate the action by the Kolkata police against a team of CBI officers over the central agency’s attempt to question its chief in connection with chit fund scams. In the Lok Sabha, members of TMC were joined in their protest by those from the Congress, BJD, NCP, SP and RJD. They slammed

the Centre over the move by the CBI and its timing with many of them accusing the Modi government of misusing the central agency for political ends ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. After repeated adjournments, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day hours earlier than schedule after opposition members created a ruckus. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee Sunday began a sit-in protest in Kolkata over the CBI’s attempt to question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar. area, was denied permission, bundled into police jeeps and whisked to a police station on Sunday. Amid noisy protests by the TMC members, Singh told the Lok Sabha the police action was “unprecedented” since CBI was stopped from lawfully doing its duty when it wanted to question Kumar regarding the chit fund scams. Earlier, opposition parties in Lok Sabha attacked the government over the alleged misuse of central agencies against political rivals, saying it was against democratic norms. TMC leader Saugata Roy said there is a crisis in West Bengal and accused the Centre of “misusing” CBI to politically capture
the state. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge charged that the government was using CBI as a weapon to finish the Opposition and put in place an autocratic regime. Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were also washed out amid ruckus by TMC members over the issue of alleged misuse of the CBI by the Centre. As soon as the House assembled, slogan shouting by the TMC members resulted in adjournment of the House till 2 PM. The same situation prevailed when the House resumed in the afternoon. TMC leader Derek O’Brien had moved a notice for discussion on the issue. But he was told by Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu that he can raise this issue during Zero Hour as also during the debate on motion of thanks to the President on his address. In the meanwhile, TMC and SP members trooped into the well and started raising slogans. When TMC members did not show any signs of relenting, Naidu adjourned the House for the day.

The members also resolved to intensify the ministry of care and support for Churches and associations within NBCC in need of financial support and human resources. The house resolved to encourage the stronger and the more privileged associations and Churches to provide for, and shoulder the responsibility for those in need. Further, NBCC resolved to cooperate with the state government in all their policies for the welfare of the people. However, the council said any programs/plans implemented at the cost of compromising Christian faith and Biblical values will not be entertained. While acknowledging the importance of providing opportunities to publicize Naga culture, the NBCC said it will take responsibility to edify the members to embrace the teaching of Jesus and live
out Biblical culture. Fourthly, the members decided to continually recognize and accept the remarkable and distinctive role of women in the Church and society and give them due credit and privileges. This way it will encourage and create an opportunity for women to represent and take part in policy making -- even in the government, it added. Taking serious note of how children and youth were becoming more and more desensitized to Biblical principles and Christian living, the Churches also resolved to implement “intentional Children and Youth ministry”. “In order to lead our children towards righteous living, teaching them biblical values, purity of life and sex education should be instilled in their minds when they are still young-- (Proverbs 22:6),” NBCC stated.
NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (PTI): Leaders of several opposition parties petitioned the Election Commission on Monday and demanded that 50 per cent of EVM results should be cross-checked with voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs) before declaring final Lok Sabha election results. Leaders of 23 political parties met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, seeking redressal of the issue of alleged tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) before Lok Sabha polls. The leaders told the Election Commission the people of the country doubted the efficacy of EVMs and this issue needs to be redressed. The Election Commission said it has heard the concerns of the parties on their demands related to the counting of VVPAT slips and assured them that the

issues raised would be “deliberated and examined”. “While considering the averments made by the political parties, the Commission shall also keep in view the pronouncements made by the different courts as well as the report expected shortly from the Indian Statistical Institute on the subject, besides the overall administrative and operational feasibility on the ground, before firming up any response,” the EC said in a statement.
The opposition parties had earlier sought moving back to the ballot paper system, but after the Election Commission categorically ruled it out, they changed their strategy and are now demanding matching of results of 50 per cent EVMs with VVPATs. “In these trying and testing times, we are writing to you as members of an exalted constitutional institution, tasked with the responsibility of ensuring free and fair elections,

president K Therie, who also vehemently condemned the controversial celebration, remarked, “They shot Mahatma Gandhi not because of any crime, but because he stood for secularism, peace, and brotherhood, and as he recognised we are not different because of our religion, caste or creed.”
Therie, who accused Gandhi’s killers of trying to subvert the constitution, said, “The assassination was also to facilitate changes in the Constitution of India, to steer the nation towards the idea of Hindutva,” while also opposing the Hindutva ideology. (Cont’d on p-11)
DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): Reiterating that it stood opposed to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, NPF has condemned the NDPP-led PDA government for being indecisive and confusing the Naga people with its “fickle and inconsistent decisions every other day”. In a communiqué issued by its press bureau, the opposition party also announced that it would be party to all likeminded political parties of the Northeast who stood for the welfare and protection of indigenous people of the region, and not to the political party that was “all words and no action”. Advising NDPP to cultivate “more facta” & “less verba” and govern with responsibility by displaying the will to serve and protect the people, NPF said it would not be surprised to read about a cabinet deci-
sion not to oppose the Bill in coming days, as “cabinet decisions of this NDPP-led PDA government of late have been changing every alternate day”. Meanwhile, in what can be termed as a major fillip to the ongoing campaign against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and as a followup to the North Eastern Region’s Political Parties Convention on the Bill held at Guwahati on January 29, representatives of major political parties of the region, including NPF, met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday (February 3) and apprised him on the dissent and ongoing furore the Bill had caused in the region after it was passed in Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019. Keeping in mind the uproar among the indigenous people of the Northeast and to discuss the effect
of CAB on the region, a meeting of all regional political parties was convened at Guwahati, in which NPF was represented by its legislators and workers led by leader of NPF Legislature Party TR Zeliang. The delegation comprised leaders of regional political parties and was led by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma. NPF Manipur unit president Awangbo Newmai, who was in the delegation, was authorised to represent the parent party, the communiqué added. Other members of the delegation included Meghalaya’s deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong (NPP), AGP president Atul Bora, AGP adviser Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Keshav Mahanta, Jitendra P Baishya and P Choudhury from AGP, besides Mevar Kumar Jamatia from IPFT.
