NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (NPN): Amidst the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) controversy, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Sunday said he would discuss the draft Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), 2016 with other political parties and civil society groups and assured that the Centre “would consider the interest of the North East people.” Singh conveyed this to a delegation of North East region political parties led by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, who called on the Home minister here on Sunday to discuss the controversial Bill and the protests that the draft law have sparked in the region. Sangma took to twitter saying: “Called on Union Home Minister to discuss Citizenship Amendment Bill. Rajnath has assured that centre would consider the interest of Northeast people.” “I think it is a very positive signal that whatever decision is made on how to move forward, will be taken only after detailed consultations with everyone,” Con-

rad Sangma added. Earlier in the day, former Assam chief minister and founder-president of the AGP Prafulla Kumar Mahanta along with other party leaders met Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan and Samajwadi Party leaders urging them to take a stand against the bill. The regional political party leaders, who are camping in Delhi, will meet representatives of all political parties. NESO advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya told PTI that they have met the leadership of the JD-U, which already declared its opposition to the Bill, and will meet leaders of the Congress, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal and some others parties in the next two days. The protests against the Bill has already reached the national capital and on January 30 over 50 protesting students from the North East were detained by Delhi police. The first meeting convened by the Home ministry proposed on February 1 in Delhi could not take place as some of the chief ministers

could not turn up. Reports from various states stated that the chief ministers were not yet able to enlist support of various stakeholders, especially NGOs and students who are protesting over the Bill. Even the February 3 meeting with Rajnath Singh, except for Conrad, no other chief ministers were present besides former Assam CM and AGP leader, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and some political party leaders from the region. Three chief ministers of the BJP in the region-- Assam’s Sarbananda Sonowal, Arunachal Pradesh’s Pema Khandu and Tripura’s Biplab Deb, have decided not to express their personal views on the contentious bill. All the NE chief ministers were expected to personally express their views on the bill. “Things are turning serious and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is himself keen to resolve the matter,” a source said. Modi had also announced that the bill is an “atonement of the wrong that was done during India’s Partition. India will safeguard all who had been victims of the Partition”.

Even though there were initially conflicting reports about some CBI officers being arrested, the city police later clarified that no CBI officer was arrested by them. An all-out war broke out between the Centre and the Mamata Banerjee government late on Sunday night, with the West Bengal chief minister beginning a sit-in protest-- “Save Democracy’-- in Kolkata. Banerjee also rushed to the residence of Kumar. “The highest levels of the BJP leadership are doing the worst kind of political vendetta. Not only are political

TMC spokesperson Derek O’ Brien tweeted, “BJP planning a constitutional coup? 40 CBI officials surround Kolkata Police Commissioner’s home. Destruction of institutions goes on unabated. KO L K ATA , F E B 3 (AGENCIES): In an unprecedented development, a number of CBI officers, who had gone to question Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar in connection with chit fund scam cases, were bundled into police jeeps, whisked to a police station and briefly detained on Sunday, officials said. NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (AGENCIES): Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the latter will be held responsible if anything happened to his health. “People will remember me as a person who tackled situations and not as somebody who added fuel to the fire. If something happened to me, people will hold the prime minister responsible,” the 81-year-old activist told news agency ANI. Hazare launched an indefinite hunger strike last week at his village Ralegan-Siddhi to protest against the Modi government’s failure to appoint a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in state. Last month, an angry Hazare had said that if Lokpal was there, scam like Rafale would not have happened. “I have plenty of papers on Rafale and I will hold a separate press conference after studying it for two days. One thing I do not understand how a company formed a month ago before the deal was made partner in it,” he was quoted as saying.

It is my job to protect my officers,” Banerjee told reporters in the evening. “They (the BJP) cannot fight is politically. That’s why they are resorting to all this... NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (AGENCEIS): With unrest brewing in the North Eastern states over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue, BJP chief Amit Shah on Sunday asserted that the BJP-led government was firm on getting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill cleared, saying “it is very important and necessary for the country”. He however said that the Centre will bring the legislation only if there is

a “consensus” among all parties over it, indicating that the government may not push for the Bill in the ongoing budget session of Parliament. The BJP chief, underlined his party’s commitment to the bill that seeks to grant citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, saying such large number of refugees cannot be left to their fate. “We are firm on this (CAB),” he said. “There are some issues on which there are differing opinions among different sections of people in the country. The Citizenship Bill has been taken up by BJP and the government after a lot of deliberation on it. It is very important and necessary for the country. But we are talking to all the

parties including those in the North East… Rajnath Singh has already spoken to some parties… we will go by the consensus that comes up,” Shah said. Shah was replying to a TOI question on the party and its government’s decision to bring the legislation, on a day when it has launched a month-long “democratic” exercise to collect public opinion on issues to use as inputs for BJP’s 2019 poll manifesto. Shah’s comments came amid indications from BJP leaders that the government may not push the bill for passage in the ongoing budget session after facing strong resistance from different parties, including its own allies in the North astern states. Amit Shah also said a new government will be established in 2019.

Manipur: Boycott of Hindi language, PM, HM and others Flights connecting Guwahati to Correspondent

IMPHAL, FEB 3: Intensifying its protest against the Centre’s effort to pass the contentious Bill, Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MANPAC) Sunday announced boycott of Hindi language, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home Minister Rajnath Singh and all symbols of the Indian Union with immediate effect . Announcing the intensified form of protest against the controversial bill, MANPAC alleged that the Bill tended to treat indigenous peoples as second-class citizens while openly embracing foreign immigrants. The conglomerate of 72 civil society organisations alleged that despite the unabated protest across the North East, the Centre was working to pass CAB as a supplementary Bill either on February 6 or 7.

Meanwhile, CPI national secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, Vinay Biswam alleged that the Bill was “anti-national, anti-people and unconstitutional”, saying “it should be thrown into the dustbin”. “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is anti-people and draconian in nature,” he alleged and called for throwing it into the dustbin. Asserting that CPI was well aware of the pulse of the people of Manipur and the North-eastern States, Biswam said CPI would take an active role in blocking the Bill from being passed in Rajya Sabha. The party had already started lobbying with members of other opposition parties in the Upper House to defeat the Bill, he added. On the other hand, protest against CAB continued in various parts of Manipur.

Also joining the protest, eminent Manipuri filmmaker and music composer Aribam Syam Sharma on Sunday said he would return the Padma Shri award, which Government of India had conferred on him in 2006 as recognition for his contribution in the field of cinema. Addressing a press conference at his residence in Imphal 83-year old Sharma, with international fame, expressed his strong disapproval of the Centre’s reported efforts to get the contentious Bill passed in Rajya Sabha, by not heeding to the popular demand for scraping it by the people of Manipur and other Northeastern States. “I am highly dissatisfied with the Centre unheeding to the popular demand of the indigenous people of the region for scrapping

CAB. Even though I could not take part in the protests physically, I support the people’s struggle morally. So, I have decided to return the award,” the veteran filmmaker who had directed more than 34 feature and non-feature films in Manipuri, including international award-winning films, announced. He accused the Centre of trying to pass the Bill anyhow, defying the strong protests being witnessed across the North-eastern region of the country.

G U WA H AT I , F E B 3 (PTI): Highlighting the geographical advantages of Assam in South East Asia, the state’s Act East Policy Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary Sunday said direct flights from Guwahati to Dhaka and Bangkok will begin from next month. During a panel discussion in the ongoing 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit here, Patowary said that there are several geographical and historical advantages of Assam as far as connectivity with South East Asia is concerned. “Under the UDAN scheme, flights are expected to start between Guwahati and Dhaka and Bangkok within the month of March this year. The LGBI Airport in Guwahati is being upgraded with the construction of a new terminal,” he

added. In terms of roadways, the Asian Trilateral Highway, the Dhola-Sadia Bridge and the Bogibeel Bridge will give a big fillip to the connectivity scenario of the region, the minister said. “The physical proximity of ASEAN countries to Guwahati is less than the major metropolitan cities of India. There has been historical trade and connectivity links, which got snapped after Independence. But with the Act East Policy, Assam and the North East has re-positioned itself as the centre of the ASEAN region,” he added. Underlining the initiatives of the government of Assam to bolster physical connectivity with South East Asia, Patowary also talked about the water linkage of North Eastern region with ASEAN.
