‘Cyber Swachhta Kendra’ launched to protect citizens

Cyber Swachhta Kendra was launched by CERT-In to prevent cyber attacks.

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS): At a time when cyber attacks are increasing, the government through its Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) on Tuesday launched “Cyber Swachhta Kendra” -- a new desktop and mobile security solution for a secure cyber space in the country. The new solution will notify, enable cleaning and secure systems of end-users to prevent further infections. “India today joined the distinguished club of countries that have malwarecleaning systems for the use of its citizens. As of now, we have 13 banks and internet service providers using this facility. With the expanding digital footprint in the country, I see a surge in start-ups in the area of cyber security by the end of the year,” said Union IT and Electronics Minister Ravi Shankar

Prasad at the event here. “This centre will work in coordination with the internet service providers (ISPs) and Industry. This Kendra will also enhance awareness among citizens regarding botnet and malware infection along with measures to be taken to secure their devices”, Prasad added. The minister also announced that the National Cyber Coordination Centre will be operational by June 2017. The government also announced it would set up CERT-Ins at the state level as well. “ T h e g o ve r n m e n t will set up 10 more STQC (Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification) testing Facilities. Testing fee for any start-up that comes up with a digital technology in the quest of cyber security will be reduced by 50 per cent. We will also empower

designated forensic labs to work as the certified authority to establish cyber crime,” Prasad noted. Part of the solution, USB Pratirodh is a desktop security solution that controls the usage of removable storage media like pen drives, external hard drives and other USB-supported mass storage devices. M-Kavach tool offers a comprehensive mobile device security solution for Android devices addressing threats related to mobile phones. AppSamvid is a desktop solution which protects systems by allowing installation of genuine applications through white listing. This helps in preventing threats from malicious applications. The move comes at a time when over 50,300 cybersecurity incidents like phishing, website intrusions and defacements, virus and denial of service attacks have been observed in the country during 2016. “As per the information reported to and tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a total number of 44,679, 49,455 and 50,362 cyber security incidents were observed during the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively,” Minister of State for Electronics and IT PP Chaudhary said in

a written reply to the Lok Sabha earlier this month. The Cyber Swachhta Kendra is part of the government of India’s Digital India initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). “With the increased penetration of ICT infrastructure in our country, the threat of cyber security has become more serious and visible. There is a need to collaborate and come forth with solutions like the Cyber Swachhta Kendra in order to ensure a safe and secure cyber world for the citizens,” said Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, MeitY. According to Saket Modi, CEO and Co-founder of Delhi-based IT risk assessment and digital security services provider Lucideus, the launch of the Botnet cleaning centre in India is a much-needed move. “The potential scale at which this centre can operate will clearly make this the largest in the world considering the size of the Indian internet ecosystem which has over half a billion people online and over 250 million smartphones and one billion mobile phones across the country,” Modi told IANS. Botnets fundamentally is a programme which is automated and runs on a computing device which can be any IoT/smart device.

CBI arrests former ED official for corruption

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS): The CBI on Tuesday arrested former Enforcement Directorate official J.P. Singh and three others accused of taking bribes while probing a hawala case and IPL betting racket in 2015-16. Besides Singh, a former Joint Director, the three arrested included Enforcement Directorate official Sanjay Kumar and two middlemen, Vimal Agarwal and Chandresh Patel. They were arrested in a corruption case probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) since September 2015. It was registered on a directive of the Finance Ministry. The CBI said Singh and other ED officials, while investigating a Surat hawala case and Indian Premier League (IPL) betting racket, allegedly took huge bribes from the accused. “A huge bribe amount was allegedly taken by these officers as quid pro quo for various acts of omission and commission,” CBI spokesperson R.K. Gaur said. He said the arrested persons were now in CBI custody in Delhi and were booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and for criminal conspiracy. The case was registered against Singh, an Indian Revenue Service officer, when he was posted in Ahmedabad as a Joint Director in the ED while

Sanjay Kumar was his subordinate then. Earlier, the CBI arrested three bookies in the case as they were allegedly working as conduits for Singh. The agency earlier produced some documents in the special court in Ahmedabad citing an Intelligence Bureau report that alleged that “Singh took money for not arresting certain accused”. Based on the IB report, the CBI named Mumbai-based bookies Vimal Agarwal and Sonu Jalan as conduits for Singh who collecting huge amounts of money from bookies and punters. CBI sources said Jalan and Agarwal visited Delhi several times in 2015 and, with the help of another bookie J.K. Arora, contacted various bookies whose names figured in the IPL betting racket. Jalan and Arora were arrested by the CBI last year but the court gave them bail when the agency failed to file a chargesheet on time.

The slogan of ‘Beti Bachao’ is simply a hollow one and BJP and RSS leaders have become exploiters of women in the country,” said Oza.

Dharamsala, Feb 21 (IANS): Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay on Tuesday said March 12 would formally be observed every year as Tibetan Women’s Day. “The observance of Tibetan Women’s Day on March 12 will reflect the collective will of the Tibetan leadership and people to accelerate the women’s empowerment policy agenda,” Sangay said here while opening a three-day firstever Tibetan women’s empowerment conference. He said Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) departments would continue to prioritise Tibetan women’s empowerment initiatives as its flagship agenda. The conference, being organised by the CTA, is seeing more than 340 participants, including Tibetan nuns. Sangay said the conference is a step in the right direction to carry forward the shared vision of His Ho-

term but women’s security situation in Gujarat has become so unfortunate that women there need to be saved from the BJP leaders themselves,” said Shobha Oza, chairperson, All India Mahila Congress. “While talking about zero tolerance, the Prime Minister has awarded a ministerial berth to a rape accused, Nihal Chand,” she said. A 24-year-old woman from Kutch had filed an FIR in Naliya town last month, alleging she

In fact, today women constitute over 20 per cent of the elected representatives in the Tibetan Parliament. Women now make up 45 per cent of the overall workforce of the CTA,” he said. Lauding women’s role in safeguarding Tibet’s rich religious and cultural tradition beginning from the nonviolent Tibetan women’s uprising against the repressive policies of the Chinese government on March 12, 1959, he said the vision of the conference is aimed beyond gender equality and on furthering women’s role in all socio-economic and political activities.

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday demanded that a sitting judge under the supervision of the High Court must investigate the Naliya gang rape case, allegedly involving BJP leaders from Kutch, and also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue. “The BJP, which came into power with the weapon of ‘Nirbhaya case’, is in the dock about the safety of women.
