Naga solution only with participation of all: Niki Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JAN 31 (NPN): NSCN (K) leader ‘lt. gen.’ (retd) Niki Sumi on Sunday asserted that his group will take into confidence the wishes and desire of the Naga people for achieving an honorable and acceptable solution to the decades-old Naga political issue. Interacting with a group of people including some media persons on the outskirts of Dimapur, Niki further stressed that unity among the Nagas was paramount for any kind of lasting solution that would be acceptable to all. He categorically emphasised that talks should be open which should include not only the negotiating parties but representatives from every tribe to sit across the table and hammer out differences. While indicating that the NSCN (K) led by him will remain as a separate entity like that of the NSCN (I-M) and the Working Committee of the NNPGs- in the peace talks with the Govern-

ment of India, Niki said that there may be differences among various groups, but unless all three-- NSCN (I-M), WC NNPGs and NSCN (K)- sit together, there cannot be any head way. “If all the groups cannot come and sit together and the public representatives cannot bear witness, there is no point in having dialogue,” Niki asserted. When asked about the pending cases slapped against him by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Niki said that the concerned authorities were working on the issue to withdraw the cases. Niki, however, made it clear that his decision to revive the ceasefire with the
Centre, which NSCN (K) had unilaterally abrogated in 2015, was to strengthen the peace process and also in view that the desire of the Nagas for a lasting solution. He maintained that the decision to join the peace talks or to revive the ceasefire was to fulfil the wishes and aspirations of the Nagas- to give peace a chance and not with the expectation that the Government of India withdraw the cases against him. Niki said his only wish was that Nagas unite. Niki asserted that his group has been striving for years to achieve an honourable and acceptable political solution to the Naga issue and was conscious of the overwhelming sentiments among Nagas for an early solution to the protracted issue. It may mentioned that Niki Sumi was recently elected as president of the breakaway faction of the NSCN (K) after differences emerged with the leadership of the NSCN (K) group in Myanmar headed by Yung Aung.
DIMAPUR, JAN 31 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has accused Government of India of not being serious and honest with Nagas vis-à-vis the ongoing political talks. In his message on the occasion of 42nd commemoration of NSCN raising day, NSCN (I-M) chairman Q Tuccu said: “...Government of India is yet to get serious and honest with the Nagas vis-à-vis the ongoing political talk.” He said that Nagas were being taken as if they were purchasable commercial commodities, but cautioned that things could go wrong in the peace process. He said Centre was expected to honour the commitments given to the organisation by former Prime Ministers, adding reinforcing trust and confidence were the key words to “crack the nut today”. Tuccu maintained that Nagas never had nor would ever try, to or help cause disin-
tegration of India but rather, wished a prosperous and strong India. He however asserted that Nagas also have no hesitation in stating that 16 Point Agreement was never a solution to the IndoNaga problem. He recalled that the political stand of Nagas in the past vis-à-vis India was that they had “nothing to do with India”. However, today, he said since Government of India and NSCN (I-M) have signed the Framework Agreement, Nagas would abide by the principles of the agreement– “nothing above and nothing below the Framework Agreement”. Tuccu said that only the principle of Framework Agreement was the key to an honourable and acceptable solution for durable peace. Neither economic packages nor imposed political packages would bring about lasting solution, he added. (Full text on p-6)
India providing solutions to world’s problems: Modi NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cited several measures of his government to assert that they are in line with Swami Vivekananda’s vision to help the poor and said from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change, India is now providing solutions to the world’s problems. Addressing the 125th anniversary celebrations of ‘Prabuddha Bharata’, a monthly journal of the Ramakrishna Order started by Swami Vivekananda in 1896, Modi listed several schemes, including opening of bank accounts and health insurance for the poor, to assert that they were in line with Vivekananda’s vision. “Take the COVID-19 pandemic as an example. What did India do? It did not just see the problem and remain helpless, India focused on solutions. From producing PPE kits to becoming a pharmacy for the world, our country has gone from strength to strength,” Modi said. India is at the forefront of developing COVID-19 vaccines and just a few days ago the country launched the world’s largest vaccination drive, he said.
NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (AGENCIES): Emboldened by the massive support which they got from ‘panchayats’ across western Uttar Pradesh, the farmers’ unions on Sunday appeared to have hardened their stand while reiterating that they were ready for talks if the Centre offers more than what it had proposed on January 22. Insisting for seeking repeal of laws and legal guarantee to purchase at minimum support price (MSP) for all farmers, they said they have not yet received any communication from the government side for talks which can, however, happen only in a congenial atmosphere at a time when more than 100 farmers are still reported to be missing after tractor rally and police action on Republic Day. The unions’ umbrella body, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), has, meanwhile, formed a committee to look into the issue of missing persons. “It is now seeking to compile information on such missing persons following

‘Budget like never before’: Sector-wise expectations from finance minister
New Delhi, Jan 31 (Agencies): Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to present the budget on Monday, February 1, a task which will be more challenging this year amid the coronavirus pandemic which has not only impacted the Nirmala Sitharaman (PTI) Indian economy but nations “never before” this year, all across the world. As Sithara- sectors are looking up to the man promised a budget like finance minister for a boost
as they face these unprecedented times, Hindustan Times reported. “Send me your inputs so that we can see a budget which is a budget like never before, in a way. Hundred years of India wouldn’t have seen a budget being made post pandemic like this,” Sitharaman had said while addressing the CII Partnership Summit 2020.
Here’s a look what different sectors expect Household: The coronavirus pandemic has impacted households across the country the most because the nationwide lockdown hit their savings hard. Incentivising savings as well as investments are expected to be the topmost priority of the government. Real estate: Although several policy measures have been taken to boost real estate in pandemic-hit 2020, the sector expects the government to widen the scope of its affordable housing scheme and provide more tax benefits to potential homebuyers. The sector wants stimulus in the form of sops in the Union Budget 2021 to boost housing demand. The key demands
comprise tax rebate on housing, GST waiver, personal tax relief, an extension of interest subvention, easing liquidity for the sector, and infrastructure status for realty. Income tax: Salaried individuals will be looking forward to finance minister increasing the basic exemption limit from Rs. 250,000 to Rs. 500,000. This will help them in having more disposable income and therefore increase personal demand as well. Although it is highly unlikely that the government would take this step. Healthcare: The pandemic made the healthcare sector face the most difficult year and therefore it expects
the government to increase spending for both infrastructure developments as well as for vaccination. The sector is also expecting a reduction in taxes, especially on treatment. Banking sector: The banking sector expects more disinvestment, privatising public sector banks (PSBs), higher allocations, setting up of bad banks and focus on investigating financial frauds by instituting an agency for the same. Auto sector: The sector expects the government to announce measures that create more demand for automobiles in the economy as the sector is focused on sales recovery after the pandemic.

Assam Assembly elections: Cong’s internal report paints bleak picture Spl. Correspondent
GUWAHATI, JAN 31 (NPN): With less than two months remaining for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, Congress has now discovered that it is on a sticky wicket. An internal study carried out by the beleaguered opposition party has projected a bleak prospect for itself in the upcoming polls expected sometime in April this year. Congress sources said an internal survey carried out by the party in Upper Assam’s 43 seats, which will decide any party’s political fortune and most of which were considered strong bastions of the party for long, has come out with a rather disquieting fact that the party could manage to win only 19 of them.
The survey has found that even constituencies like Mariani, Nazira and Sivasagar, which were long considered strongholds of Congress, may no longer remain with the party and could slip to BJP. The study further found that Congress’ traditional support base in tea belt of Upper Assam too has been lost. In fact, out of the 43 seats, the survey predicted that only 19 were “winnable” seats, while seven were “half-probable” seats, seven “challenging but winnable” seats and the remaining 10 were “non-winnable” seats. Noting that formation of new regional parties like Assam Jatiya Parishad at the behest of the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Raijor Dal, under the aegis of farm-
ers’ body Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), has changed the political scenario in Assam, the study contended that this would impact voting pattern in Upper Assam where tea community voters remained “loyally committed to BJP”. In the past, the community formed a strong support base for Congress. The study also observed that many rebels from both Congress and BJP have joined these new regional parties recently. Hence, predicting division of votes in the “greater Assamese community” due to formation of the new regional outfits, the survey report however mentioned that BJP was likely to offset any erosion of votes due to this with its agenda of polarising Hindu votes.
