galand is also the gateway of Southeast Asia and with the central government’s Act East policy, a great future beckons the state. Direct connectivity with Southeast Asia will give the state a huge market for its products.” On the strength of the state in terms of scope for job creation, Rio pointed out that the strength of the State lies in its organic farm produce, rare medicinal plants and herbs, a young population fluent in English. With investment in IT connectivity, the geographical remoteness of the state

Imnatiba also proposed an extended office on a 100 acre plot of land that was available in Dimapur, adding that NTTC envisioned reaching out to more youths and acting as a bridge between the education and employment. PARIS, DEC 8 (AGENCIES): The sound of sirens, angry chants and the crack of stun grenades echoed throughout the French capital Saturday as Parisians braced themselves for what many feared would be the most violent protests in weeks of forceful anti-government demonstrations that have swept the country. Protests that began last month against planned tax hikes on gas have since morphed into a wider rebuke of Emmanuel Macron’s presidency and an expression of anger at his attempts to reform France’s long-ailing economy. Almost eight in ten people in France support the protests, according to a poll published last week. Paris’ glittering museums and galleries-- including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower-- said they would not open their doors to the usual troop of holiday season tourists. The effects of the protest were felt beyond the country’s borders as well, with protesters donning yellow jackets as a symbol of resistance in Belgium Saturday and Iraq earlier this week.
Too much hype over surgical strike: Ex-Army Gen who saw ops live NEW DELHI, DEC 8 (AGENCIES/PTI): The initial euphoria over the success of the surgical strike was natural but the constant hype around it is unwarranted, said Lt. Gen. DS Hooda (retd) who was associated with the operation across the Line of Control. “I do think there was too much hype over it. The military operation was important and we had to do it. Now how much should it have been politicised, whether it is right or wrong is something that should be asked to politicians,” said Lt. Gen. DS Hooda (retd) who was the Northern Army Commander when the operation was carried out in September 2016. The surgical strike was launched in retaliation to the Uri terror attack in which 19 Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistani terrorists. Reacting to the comments by Lt. Gen. Hooda, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat told news agency ANI: “These are individual person’s perceptions, so let’s not comment on them. He was one of the main persons involved in conduct of these operations, so I respect his

words very much.” Lt. Gen DS Hooda had approved the plans for special forces to retaliate less than two weeks after the Uri terror attack. The retired army officer made the comments in Chandigarh, where he attended the Military Literature Festival (MLF). Hooda said it was natural to have initial euphoria about the success, but the constant maintenance of hype around the military operations was unwarranted. Responding to a question from the audience, Lt. Gen Hooda said that in hindsight, it would have been better had “we done it (surgical strikes) secretly”. The aim of any such offensive had to be not only
tactical but strategic too, which substantially hampers enemy morale, he said. Citing the example of the 1981 Israeli air strikes on Iraqi nuclear sites, which had caused considerable damage, Lt. Gen. NS Brar (retd) underscored the need to ensure long-term impact on the enemy before undertaking any such operation in the future. Cautioning politicians against being adventurists, Lt. Gen. Brar asked if they would have taken responsibility had there been any causalities in the strikes. Rahul says Modi used surgical strikes for ‘political capital’: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Lt Gen (retd) D S Hooda’s remarks that it would have been better if the 2016 surgical strikes were carried out secretly, alleging that the PM used the military action for “political capital”. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said: “Spoken like a true soldier General. India is so proud of you. Mr 36 has absolutely no shame in using our military as a personal asset. (More on p-5)

On the general outlook towards employment in the state, Rio challenged the youth of the state to “become job providers instead of fighting to become servants,” adding that “people sought white collared jobs and feel it is second class to be entrepreneurs or work on their own.” Industries and Commerce adviser, Imnatiba Jamir in his welcome address highlighted that the NTTC has trained 4000 students since 2006 and boasts of a 70 percent placement percentage, earning a

To press the government of India for an early Naga political solution, the Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) has decided to hold peaceful rally in all the 11 districts and two sub-divisions on December 12, 2018. In a press release, NGBF general secretary, Shikuto Zalipu, and information & publicity secretary, Khu Naga, said decision was taken at a meeting held on December 7 at Hotel Saramati, attended by all the district GB association officials and advisors. At the meeting, the members expressed concern over the “Naga peace process being prolonged and getting at the edge of present Government’s tenure.”NGBF has appealed to all GBs and Naga civil society organisations to participate in the rally to demand for early solution to the Naga issue.
Amit Shah said on Saturday that Indians have the right to the country’s resources, and it is not a ‘dharamshala’ where illegal immigrants can come to settle down. Describing illegal immigration as threat to the country, Shah said National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a way to solve the basic problems of the country and should not be connected to the BJP. “They (intruders) should be identified. Delete their names from the electoral roll. The BJP clearly believes that they should be identified and deported. Intruders also threaten the security of the country,” he said while replying to a question on NRC. “NRC should not be seen by connecting it with the BJP only. It is a way to solve the country’s basic problems. How is it possible that anyone can come and settle down here? The country cannot run like this. Those who are its citizens should stay here only and they only have the right to the resources of this country. Taking on opposition over the issue, the BJP chief alleged that the intruders have been used as a vote bank for 70 years and they are a threat to the country, whereas BJP believes in taking tough decisions which are in the interest of the country.
DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): Following the stand taken by the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum(NJCF) against conducting any examinations on Sunday, the Angami Baptist Church Council(ABCC) and also Dimapur Christian Forum(DCF) have also decided to object. In a statement ABCC executive director Rev. Dr. V. Atsi Dolie informed all that from 2019 facility under ABCC, particularly Baptist High “should not be approached” for conducting recruitment exams and the like on Sundays. ABCC said this was in compliance with the concern raised by NJCF to keep Sundays “holy, sacred and free from entertaining activities” which could be done on weekdays. It expressed concern that sanctity of Sundays was being defiled in many forms and therefore, ABCC would support any move to reclaim Sunday a “God-honouring Day”. In another statement, DCF through its chairman Rev. Moses
Murry, has appealed to all not to conduct public exams on Sundays. This appeal was made after the Social Welfare department and Taxes department notified their respective recruitment examinations on December 9, 2018 (Sunday). DCF said Sunday was a day of rest and worship and so as Nagaland was also a Christian (dominated) state, believers need to keep this precept in order to live as Christians so as to inspire others. Rev. Murry explained the significance of keeping Sunday as a day of rest and to follow the tenets of Jesus Christ. On this day, he said faithful are obliged to attend church service unless there was “a grave impediment” while pastors are responsible to offer everybody the possibility of fulfilling the precept as a need arising from the depths of Christian life. DCF therefore, requested all government departments not to hold their exams on Sundays but other weekdays.

es of tiny red woodworm (popularly called Kelou) costs Rs. 300 and Rs. 500 for nine pieces. Opining that Hornbill festival was meant for everybody and not exclusively for tourists, local visitors suggested that there should be certain regulations on controlling the high prices so every citizen, including the underprivileged, could also participate in the festival. Many guests opined that KCCI or the tourism department should intervene and regulate the uncontrolled price rise especially on food items. A domestic tourist said even if the government’s intention was to promote entrepreneurs in the state, entrepreneurs should not take advantage of it by looting people with ridiculous price rises. One of the tourists shared that though this is the main season to earn,
there should be certain limits on rates of certain items including food. Another domestic tourist grumbled about his hotel which he said was very expensive, besides taxi fares doubling by late evening. Considering the limited accommodations, most of the foreign tourists whom this correspondent interviewed had to be content with what was available despite being charged too much. Unfortunately some domestic tourists had to struggle with taxi hiring charges as some were made to pay Rs. 6000 to Rs.8000 for 6-7 hour hires (day time).
Tourism deptt, KCCI to review price rise
Taking serious note of the complaints received from visitors over the rates of food and other items at the Hornbill festival, Tourism department said it would convene a review meeting
after December 10. When contacted, HoD tourism department Akhale Khamo said the department could not strictly fix the prices of the various items including the food since each tribe has its own cuisine. She, however, said the officer in-charge had issued strict instructions to entrepreneurs before the start of the event that things should not be sold at high prices. Meanwhile, KCCI officials also admitted that in spite of certain items being seized, many entrepreneurs continued to sell their wares at high prices. They stated that KCCI had particularly asked for prices of the vendor’s items in the stall application forms. They said before selection, many stalls had to be cancelled owing to their high prices, but this problem was still continuing in spite of effort to control prices.
NEW DELHI, DEC 8 (IANS): In line with the Make in India initiative, global medical device maker Meril Life Sciences on Saturday launched its first indigenously designed and manufactured artificial aortic valve for patients who are at a high risk or unwilling to undergo open heart valve replacement surgery. The Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement (TAVR), which will be sold under the brand name “Myval”, is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor places a artificial valve into the patient’s diseased valve via a catheter inserted through the femoral artery (large artery in groin). It is an alternative way to replace diseased valves without undergoing traditional open heart procedure, which some patients may not receive well. “Meril is the first Indian company to commer-
cially make this therapy available in the country. Through the commercialisation of this technology, Meril will soon bring the next generation treatment modality to thousands of patients across the country and globally,” said Sanjeev Bhatt, VP Corporate Strategy, Meril Life Sciences. TAVR has been dominated by US-based medical devices makers Medtronics and Edwards Lifesciences. “The novel Myval technology is associated with zero new pacemaker implantation rates post pro-
cedure (which is an important benefit for the patient already treated for valve replacement). Pacemaker is an additional device that may be placed post TAVR procedure,” Bhatt told IANS. “Keeping healthcare for all in mind, the price of the technology will be well within the range,” he added. The company has also received an approval from the Indian drug regulator Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for commercialisation of TAVR. The approval is based on successful results from a clinical trial done in India, involving 14 hospitals -- Fortis and Medanta-The Medicity and Eternal Hospital, Jaipur, to name a few, Bhatt said. TAVR is increasingly becoming a preferred alternative for surgical valve replacement because it is associated with faster recovery time. K Y M C
