Petro, diesel prices hiked
1984 Sikh riots case: Sajjan Kumar given life in jail; Kumar to move SC
NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (AGENCIES): Petrol, diesel prices rose on Monday tracking the recent fall in the value of rupee against the US dollar. While petrol became costlier by 19-20 paise per litre, diesel prices rose by 9-10 paise per litre across major cities of the country, according to data available on Indian Oil Corporation website. After Monday’s price revision, unbranded petrol, in the national capital Delhi is priced at Rs 70.53, up 19 paise compared to Sunday’s price of Rs 70.34 and diesel is retailing at Rs 64.47, 9 paise higher than Sunday’s price. Meanwhile, cost of petrol was Rs. 68.27 per litre and diesel was Rs. 62.03 in Dimapur on Monday while in the state capital Kohima a litre of petrol and diesel was Rs. 69.09 and Rs. 62.64 respectively. It may be mentioned that retail fuel prices in India depend on both international oil price and the rupee-dollar exchange rate. While Brent crude futures are hovering around $60 per barrel mark, the Indian rupee has depreciated to 72 level against the US dollar causing the recent hike in retail fuel prices.
NEW DELHI, DEC 17 (AGENCIES): Senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was on Monday convicted and sentenced to life term for “remainder of his natural life” in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Delhi High Court which said the riots were a “crime against humanity” perpetrated by those who enjoyed “political patronage”. The high court said though it was “undeniable” that it took over three decades to punish the accused in the case, it was important to assure the victims that despite the challenges faced by the court, “truth will prevail and justice will be done”. The case relates to killing of five Sikhs in Raj Nagar part-I area in Palam Colony in South West Delhi on November 1-2, 1984 and burning down of a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar part II. The high court directed the 73-year-old Kumar and other five convicts to surrender by December 31, 2018 and not to leave the city of Delhi. Six accused, including Sajjan Kumar, who was a Member of Parliament at that time, were sent for trial in 2010 and three years

DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): In a significant development, Government of India (GoI) and the NSCN (K) led by Khango Konyak Monday held an “informal meeting” at Delhi to chalk out the differences. The meeting was held following Khango-led NSCN (K)’s December 6, 2018 declaration to revoke its decision of unilaterally abrogating the ceasefire agreement with the GoI. Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) and GoI representative for Naga peace talks, R.N. Ravi and three members representing the NSCN (K) led by general secretary, Isak Sumi sat for an informal meeting at New Delhi. Sources informed that both the sides had a “good meeting” and explored the possibilities to include NSCN (K) in the ongoing peace process. Sources also disclosed that the two parties were likely to meet for
the second round of informal meeting during the first half of January 2019. It may be recalled that the undivided NSCN (K) had unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire in March 2015, leading to multiple violent incidents, including attacks on security forces. Acknowledging the efforts and appeal by NGOs and civil society organizations to restore the ceasefire agreement with Government of India (GoI), NSCN (K) led by Khango Konyak decided to revoke its decision of unilaterally abrogating the ceasefire agreement. In a joint statement, NSCN (K) chairman and president, Khango Konyak and general secretary Isak Sumi had informed that the group, after holding wide consultations with civil society groups during the past one month and keeping in view the positive response by GoI, resolved to revoke the unilateral decision of abrogating the ceasefire. It may also be mentioned that the Khango-led NSCN (K) had placed a

total electricity consumption. But while there exists a substantial energy saving potential by adopting energy efficiency (EE) technologies, reinforced by a number of financial products offered by
four-point demand to the GoI for consideration-- lift ban imposed on NSCN and removal of terrorist tag; rescind the bounties placed on NSCN leaders; repeal AFSPA/DDA on the enforced Naga areas and unconditional release of NSCN cadres arrested after the abrogation of ceasefire and undergoing trials or serving sentences in different prisons across the state/country. The Centre in response to the demand had stated that as soon as NSCN (K) comes into peace process dialogue with the Centre, ban on NSCN (K), terrorist tag and bounties on its leaders will be automatically removed/close. However, Centre said it was committed to solve the Naga issue with one comprehensive solution and therefore cannot have many agreements. Centre also categorically stated that it was not in a state to take up third party with fresh negotiation at this juncture. Further, GoI stated that there should not be any insecurity on the part of NSCN (K).
the Central government to save on electricity bills and also combat global warming, financial institutions are still largely unaware of EE initiatives by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). To address this lack of awareness, a two-day workshop for financial institutions on EE financing got underway at Hotel Lake Shilloi near City Tower here on Monday. The workshop is being jointly organised by BEE, International Finance Corporation of World Bank Group and Indian Banks’ Association, and co-funded by the European Union. Resource persons of the
two-day workshop are Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) assistant general manager (AGM) KP Phillip and Frost and Sullivan’s sustainability initiatives programme manager Chandan Roy. Pointing out the erratic and extreme weather conditions of Nagaland in the last few years, State’s chief electrical inspector Er IB Chishi, in his welcome address, warned that the “world is waging an invisible war against global warming and people have to take collective responsibility for the predicament we find ourselves (Cont’d on p-11) in.”
DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): NDPP Monday extended Christmas greetings to all. later, the lower court had convicted five of the accused but acquitted the Congress leader of all the charges. Deciding the appeals against acquittal of Sajjan Kumar, a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel convicted the Congress leader for offences of criminal conspiracy and abetment in commission of crimes of murder, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of communal harmony and defiling and destruction of a Gurdwara. The bench said the accused in the case were brought to justice “primarily on account of the courage
and perseverance of three eyewitnesses”-- Jagdish Kaur, her cousin Jagsher Singh and Nirpreet Kaur. The bench also upheld the conviction and varying sentences awarded by the trial court to former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar, retired naval officer Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former MLAs Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar. Sajjan Kumar to move SC: Sajjan Kumar intends to move an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court verdict on Monday sentencing him to spend the remainder of his life in jail in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, his lawyer said. The lawyer told PTI that since the high court verdict was over 200 pages long, time was required to apply the mind and thereafter, they will move the apex court. Advocate Anil Sharma, who represented Kumar in the high court, said the 73-year old Congress leader has been given time till December 31, 2018 to surrender and efforts would be made to challenge the conviction and the sentence before that.
Forest fire at Mount Puliebadze contained; JVC warns trekkers DIMAPUR, DEC 17 (NPN): The ravaging fire that broke out on Mount Puliebadze on Sunday allegedly due to carelessness on the part of some trekkers was finally contained on December 17 evening, Jotsoma Village Council stated in a press note. Rafale row: Privilege notices against PM, Rahul NEW DELHI, DEC 17(AGENCIES): Opposition Congress Monday gave privilege notices against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government on the Rafale aircraft deal only to be countered with a notice against Rahul Gandhi by the ruling party MPs. Congress gave notices of breach of privilege in both houses, demanding an explanation from the government on why it provided the Supreme Court “wrong” information on the Rafale deal. While Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad sent the notice to chairman of Rajya
Sabha, Congress’ leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge gave the notice in the Lower House. In Lok Sabha, Congress leader Sunil Jakhar also gave a notice, which he said was being moved against the prime minister for allegedly misleading the Supreme Court and Parliament in connection with the recent judgement on the Rafale deal. During the Zero Hour, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said she received the notice for privilege motion and the matter was under her consideration. Separately, three BJP MPs
-- Anurag Thakur, Nishikant Dubey and Sanjay Jaiswal -moved a notice of breach of privilege against Congress president, alleging he spoke “falsehood” and “misled the House” over the fighter aircraft deal in his speech during a debate in July on the no-confidence motion against Modi government. In Rajya Sabha, Azad was countered by sloganshouting from members of treasury benches, when he said he has given a notice for taking up of a discussion over the government allegedly misguiding the Supreme Court over the purchase of Rafale jets from France.
