In due course of time, the NPF loyalist who remained with Dr. Shürhozelie and T.R. Zeliang reportedly held series of meetings throughout the day. It was also learnt that the legislators camped at de Oriental Grand had to call off their attempted coup and gradually dispersed by evening. Job of politicians to provide road connectivity: Governor DIMAPUR, DEC 13 (NPN): Nagaland Gover nor P.B. Achar ya on Wednesday said that road connectivity was a political job and should be done by politicians. Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of the 48th General Conference of Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK) at Zutovi village, Acharya questioned: “You have good leaders and government but where is the governance?” and pointed to the fact that every MLA was getting Rs. 2 crore annually for their constituency development. “Road connectivity is a political job, it should be done by your politicians, bureaucrats, contractors and you have to question them. Stand against corruption, it is the biggest disease. Every year, Nagaland has a budget of Rs 1500 crore, where does it go?” he added. Acharya pointed out that the Central government had made it mandatory for every MLA and MP to “adopt” a village, “But none of them have come to me saying they have adopted a village,” he added.

Acharya after unveiling the 48th SKK general conference monolith.

On the occasion, SKK had submitted a representation to the Governor, who is also the chief reactor of Nagaland University (NU), wherein they urged him to direct concerned authorities to look into the deplorable conditions of all the roads connecting Lumami, the headquarters of NU. Acknowledging the importance of the representation, Acharya compared the neighbouring Tezpur University with NU, both started at the same year, and said the former had progressed in leaps and bounds while NU was yet to see development in many

areas. He once again brought up the need for imparting skills instead of just degrees. and spoke about the diminishing work culture where nobody wanted to be a welder, electrician, plumber etc. “These are the jobs required in every industry,” he said. Acharya mentioned the case of NU Lumami students demanding that a truck be provided to them at least once in a week to go to the Assam border for purchasing vegetables and termed it a “lamenting story”. Dimapur, Dec 13 (NPN): Core Committee of the apex tribal hohos/bodies of Nagaland has asked Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang to revoke the November 24, 2016 resolution of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly pertaining to conduct of elections to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and put to rest all contentious issues until such time the Municipal Act of Nagaland was thoroughly scrutinized, acceptably amended and formalized. In a memorandum to the chief minister on behalf of Core Committee of the apex tribal hohos/ bodies of Nagaland on Wednesday, Angami Public Organisation (APO) president, Dr Vilhusa Seleyi and Chakhesang Public Organisation president, Kekhwengulo Lea urged the government to honour the wishes of people and revoke the resolution in the backdrop of the ensuing season of peace. The memorandum said a series of consultative meetings were held, the latest two being the tribal hohos meeting held on October 31, 2017 at the APO Hall, Kohima and on December 5, 2017 at Kisama, wherein the firm stance of the tribal people was continuously and consistently expressed every time. It may be recalled that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on November 24, 2016 revoked a September 22, 2012 assembly resolution and passed the Nagaland Municipal (Third Amendment) Bill, 2016.

(PCC) has threatened launch a “hunger strike” outside the state Assembly complex from December 15 if the state government failed to fulfil their core demands by December 14, when the winter session of the NLA commences. In a press note, PCC media cell reminded the government to revoke the October 26, OM that scrapped Grade III posts from the purview of NPSC, to set up Lokayukta as per the demands of ACAUT and to declare answer keys for all stages of exams conducted by NPSC. It further demanded that the state government declare the actions taken and make it known to the Naga public in the local dailies on December 15. PCC has therefore appealed to all right-thinking citizens of Nagaland to volunteer and show solidarity in this fight for equal opportunity and meritocracy; against corruption, nepotism and injustice.

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has submitted a memorandum to the chief minister demanding that the October 26, 2017 Office Memorandum (OM) be revoked. The memorandum signed by NSF president, Kesosul Christopher Ltu and general secretary, Imtiyapang Imsong called attention to the OM whereby the state government had withdrawn all class III nongazetted posts under pay band of Rs. 2800 from the purview of NPSC except for Secretarial Assistance. NSF opined that this was not justified and was against the interests and welfare of the student community and aspiring students. They also demanded that all the exam advertisements made by various departments for posts whose grade pay are Rs. 2800 and above should be kept in abeyance. NSF also said that these demands should be addressed immediately.

Climate change: Media urged to educate policy makers Correspondent

KO H I M A , D E C 1 3 (NPN): Chief Conservator of Forest and State Nodal Officer for Climate Change, Supongnukshi has urged media to educate policy makers as it had more access to information than the latter. Responding to queries on last day of the threeday media workshop on climate change here on Wednesday, Supongnukshi also encouraged media to publish success stories of local people from different places. Asserting that local people had adapted to climate change with their own methodologies and experiences, he said their success stories might be helpful for others to adopt various strategies according to the changes in the climate. On the State Action

Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) initiated by the Forest department, the Chief Conservator said data was collected from 25 departments involved in the climate change subject. He informed the participants that SAPCC incorporated data collected from national research institutions and from those already available with the department, adding that action plan was formulated based on guidelines of the National Policy on Climate Change. Stating that it depended on individual departments on how to take the action plan forward, Supongnukshi, said that an integrated approach was required to work together. He said the Forest department would set up a web portal where information will be made available and that it would be one of the most important portals

to disseminate information on climate change. One of the panellists, policy analyst, Amba Jamir, who is a member of Integrated Mountain Initiative and Executive Secretary of Sustainable Development Forum of Nagaland (SDFN), said, climate change had huge impact on mountainous regions and Nagaland, being a mountainous State, faced a grave challenge. Jamir said with 70% of Nagaland’s population already dependent on agriculture, media and policy makers need to wake up to the gravity of the situation as Nagas depend on land and natural resources for their livelihood. He added that policies adopted by village councils seemed to be more effective than the ones by the government. India Science Wire’s Managing Editor, Dinesh C. Sharma said the subject

of climate change was challenging and complex and that its impact was felt mostly by local people, who were most vulnerable. Stressing on the importance of connecting with scientists and experts, Sharma said that unless the research activities were translated into concrete action, polices alone would not help. Global Open University, Nagaland Director, Dr Imotemsu Ao also spoke on the occasion. The three-day media workshop on climate change was jointly organized by Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with State Climate Change Cell, NASTEC and Centre for Media Studies.
