but shortage of essential commodities continue to hit the district. Some rice-laden trucks arrived in Kiphire Friday through the efforts of district administration Kiphire. However, shortage of essential commodities, par-

ticularly rice, is still being felt due weight restrictions imposed on goods-laden trucks. According to sources, trucks were only allowed to carry nine to ten tons into Kiphire by the authorities as opposed to the 18 tons carried under normal conditions. Sources said the truckers continue to charge normal hire rate of Rs. 60,000 regardless of the quantity of goods they carry. “This has affected supply and demand because traders are unable to replenish their stocks as per the market demand,” sources said. It was learnt that district authorities were in touch with their counterparts in Kohima and Dimapur to allow Kiphire-bound trucks to carry at least 14 to 15 tons to further ease the burden on the market. The department concerned was also reportedly doing its best to restore the damaged roads at the earliest. NSDMA and the state government have initiated relief efforts to airdrop essential commodities. However, in spite of their best

efforts, it has proved insufficient. Kiphire district administration wrote to the state government to arrange more rice for Kiphire, which the government has agreed to do. The district administration has also requested the public not to panic since the authorities were making all necessary arrangements and taking measures to resolve the issue.

KASU appeals Stating that normal life was yet to be restored as the supply of food grains was not sufficient, the Kiphire Area Students’ Union (KASU) has appealed to the government and the citizens to come together and extend humanitarian aid to the public of Kiphire. In a press release, KASU president, Isaac Tsalumbi, said that on August 24 last, three truck-loads of rice reached Kiphire from Aghunato and each household was issued 10kg. It has acknowledged the PDA government and district administration of Kiphire, Meluri, Phek and Kohima for extending their cooperation and support.

Despite criticism, BJP in Nagaland will immerse Vajpayee’s ashes GUWAHATI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Turning a deaf ear to the criticism of opposition Congress, the BJP in Nagaland has decided to go ahead with the proposed immersion of the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. BJP state unit chief Temjen Imna Along Longkumer said the ashes would be immersed on Monday. “Yes, I will immerse the ashes in Doyang river on Monday,” he told TNIE. He had brought the ashes from New Delhi on Thursday and kept it at his residence in state capital Kohima. Apart from Congress, a section of BJP workers and leaders was not happy over the move to immerse the ashes through local leaders and by following “alien” rituals. These BJP leaders had earlier suggested to Longkumer not to bring the ashes and hold a prayer meeting instead, in remembrance of Vajpayee. However, he did not accept the idea, TNIE report stated. Asked about the criticism by Congress on the issue, Longkumer said: “Congress is doing its job. There is no ritual only respect to our departed leader”.

The Congress on Friday had said the immersion of Vajpayee’s ashes in some selected rivers of the country had been turned into a “political circus” by BJP and its Nagaland unit. “The activities of BJP Nagaland and particularly its state president displaying their eagerness to please their communal masters by following and observing rituals that are alien to our way of life is an insult to all rightthinking Nagas. While Nagas have been struggling for the past seven decades to protect our unique history, the allout attempt by state BJP to assimilate themselves into a new alien culture as dictated by their high command is a severe assault on the aspirations of the Nagas and their future,” the Congress had said. Meanwhile, in another Christianmajority state, Mizoram, Vajpayee’s ashes was immersed in Tlawng river. The urn, containing the ashes, was brought to Aizawl from New Delhi by state BJP chief JV Hluna. The immersion followed a funeral with full Christian religious honour at BJP’s state head office.

India ready for Ahimsa meat: Maneka Gandhi NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said meat grown in a laboratory from animal cells, or “clean meat”, may help solve the problem of lynching, assault and intimidation by cow protection groups, which is creating “a pervasive air of violence”. “It is the most important thing to create alternative sources of meat,” Gandhi said, according to The New Indian Express. “We must have clean meat...People are being lynched for taking cows for slaughter. Why this terror?” Maneka was speaking at a seminar on ‘Future of Protein Summit’ at Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad. Gandhi said a private survey found that 66% consumers are ready to accept lab-grown “ahimsa” meat taken from animal cells and that top IT giants were investing in clean meat technology, Times of India reported. She also said people should opt for lab-grown meat since methane released by animals is the biggest contributor to global warming.

IMPHAL, AUG 25: Manipur chief minister, N. Biren Singh on Saturday said there was no hurry to summon a special session of the state assembly to discuss the Framework Agreement signed between Centre and the NSCN (I-M) since the Parliament had not tabled the matter during the last monsoon session. “Nevertheless, the state government is still ready to convene the session anytime when required to take any decision to uphold people’s will/

wish,” Singh said, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of the joint Meeyamgi Numit (People’s Day) and Hill Leaders’ Day held at the CM’s secretariat durbar hall Saturday. “The Centre has not informed the state government on the issue. The Centre will take all stakeholders including the Manipur government into confidence when the time comes,” he said. Singh reiterated that the state government will always take people’s wish into account before accepting any final decision concerning the state.

Earlier, Biren Singh had said that he will be the first one to resign if Manipur’s integrity is threatened. Congress leader Gaikhangam said, “It will not create any ripples when the chief minister resigns once the framework agreement becomes a statutory body.” The chief minister also said, “The integrity and unity of the state will never be compromised.” Opposition leader and former chief minister O Ibobi said, “If the stand of the BJP-led coalition government is so, then it should publicly announce that the government would shoulder the responsibility in the event of compromising Manipur’s integrity and unity in any manner.” He said that the Cabinet had fixed the dates of the special session twice, but these were later cancelled. Opposition Congress has announced that it will urge the Governor to summon a special session of the Assembly.

NTC questions UNC,NH for warning Nagas DIMAPUR, AUG 25 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has said it was “seriously questionable” for the United Naga Council of Manipur and the Naga Hoho to issue a “severe warning to Nagas” through a joint statement which appeared in the August 24 issue of Nagaland newspapers. NTC through its media cell, cited the joint statement by which UNC and Naga Hoho “cautioned any Naga elected representative, political leader, political party, unmandated or unauthorised Naga individual or group, not to attend or participate in any assembly or meeting that would sabotage the ‘IndoNaga’ peace” and further warned that any one defying “ the Naga political principle and its position would be treated as anti-national and their entry into Naga territory would be banned.” NTC pointed out that UNC is only the exclusive um-

brella organisation of Nagas of Manipur and therefore, has no jurisdiction over Nagas living outside Manipur state. It also pointed out that while Naga Hoho, was supposed to be the “apex organisation of all Nagas, irrespective of territorial barriers”, the ENPO is outside its purview. In addition, NTC said even Central Nagaland Tribes Council(CNTC) comprising of major tribes have opted out of Naga Hoho while those that still remained appear to have distanced themselves from active participation under the “present leadership(of Naga Hoho) for reasons best known to NH. In view of the above factual positions of UNC and Naga Hoho, the NTC said that issuing “such questionable warning to Naga people in general” by-UNC- a mere unit of Naga Hoho and Naga Hoho which was under severe test itself “ presently is wrongly timed.”

NTC asked both UNC and NH as to what was the considered parameter by which an act of an individual or an organisation could amount to “sabotage to peace process?”. Again, it also wanted to know from the two as to what was meant by “un-mandated or unauthorised” in relation to pursuance of Naga political issue? It also asked UNC/ NH as to which group or individual they believed was “mandated and authorised and who is/are not?” It also asked UNC/NH to lucidly define the “Naga political principle” for the sake of clarity. NTC also asked the two as to what was parameter to deem any act as “defiance” of Naga political principle? Further it demanded to know as to what mechanism was adopted to “banish a defaulter(antinational) and then enforce banning him/her from entry into Naga territory?

NTC reminded that people of Nagaland “sufficiently faced bombardments of intimidations and threats to individuals and organisations particularly from NNPGs in the past”. It said these have made the people of Nagaland learn adequate lessons of how “self destructive were fratricidal killings and inter group confrontations”. NTC opined that if there was any necessity for Nagas to bridge or sort out anything of common interest, there were enough rooms and opportunities for such exercises. It said the present concern was to work out a mechanism by which everyone is taken on board for inclusive solution. However, NTC pointed out that the UNC/NH joint statement was found to be “more of intimidation and arrogance than of matured opinion befitting the prevailing situation adding it was unbecoming of UNC and NH to take Nagas for granted.

ANCSU reminds govt on detachment of teachers Trilateral highway likely to be completed by 2019 DIMAPUR, AUG 25 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has expressed displeasure with the department of School Education concerning demands to detach all the teachers attached to VVIPs, VIPs, directorate, District Education Officers (DEOs), Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs) and deputed to other missions as per the standing order. In a press release, ANCSU vice president and grievances cell chairman, Benjong Longchar, and general secretary, Vimeyiekho Vitso, said that despite several appeals, the department was yet to implement the standing order dated October 31, 2017 in full. In this regard, the union has appealed to the government and the department to take the matter seriously on the issue

affecting the career of the student community. Claiming that it has full list and reports of the attached and deputed teachers, the union said that salaries of those teachers unwilling to return to their respective institutions should be withheld and necessary action initiated. ANCSU warned that it would be compelled “to expose the names of the teachers within no time.”

Land encroachment, scholarship issue

Following the state government directive to DC Kohima to complete the survey work vis-à-vis Kohima Science College Jotsoma (KSCJ) land encroachment issue and submit report within six weeks, the ANCSU has appealed to the district administration to properly survey the land and ensure that not

even an inch of a college land was compromised. ANCSU said it would not accept any manipulation in the land survey. On the state government’s assurance to set up a separate nodal cell for implementing all kind of scholarships, the union expressed hope that the state government would strictly abide by its assurance given. All Nagaland College Students’ Union also urged the state government to take measures to disburse full amount of scholarships to the beneficiaries. It said student community would not acknowledge any kind of justifications on partial payment of scholarships. “The state government and concerned departments unable/failing to avail funds from the central government on time for payment of students’ scholarship is not justi-

fied,” ANCSU stated. Further, ANCSU reiterated its demand to the state government to take measures for payment of scholarships in full amount to the beneficiaries by making alternative arrangements. The union stated that its agitation has been kept on abeyance until the expiry of the time given by the state government for necessary actions and implementations. Meanwhile, ANCSU has appreciated the directive given by the chief minister’s office to the concerned district administrations and concerned departments to submit reports on the issues within stipulated time as directed. The union, however, asserted that the college students would not remain silent if the state government failed to address its genuine issues.

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): India has said that work has gained momentum on the Trilateral Highway Project and that it is likely to be completed by 2019. Two crucial projects connecting Northeast with the neighbouring Southeast Asia– the Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project– are high on the agenda of the ensuing BIMSTEC Summit scheduled to be held in Nepal on August 30-31, said Secretary (East) Preeti Saran. Saran admitted that the progress has been slow so far but added quickly that work on 69 bridges had gained momentum and that it should be completed by 2019. Problems like land acquisition had held up the projects, but there is rapid progress now, she added. Implemented by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the connectivity

projects – the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, extension of Trilateral Highway to Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam, and the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project – are presently at various stages of completion. Interestingly, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in its recent report, appreciated the work undertaken by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for smooth road connectivity, particularly with Myanmar, but added that much needs to be done in this direction since physical infrastructure, including road, rail and air connectivity, is a serious problem in Northeast. The Committee also recommended early completion of the projects as roads are the real facilitator to transport, connectivity and trade. The MEA told the Par-

liamentary Panel that steps are being taken to expedite the project work, which include close monitoring of work by the project management consultants, regular review through multiple monitoring mechanisms, facilitation of clearances approvals and security by Myanmar authorities and coordination for implementation by the MEA. The MEA is closely coordinating with the DoNER Ministry and concerned State governments for expeditious implementation of the projects, which involves upgradation of 69 bridges, construction of approach roads on Tamu-KyigoneKalewa section and construction of 120.7-km road on Kalewa-Yargi section of the Trilateral Highway. The work on bridges and approach and the project is scheduled to be completed in three years, the report said. K Y M C
