Dimapur station struggles to serve Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Though the Ministry of Railways had announced the upgradation of 11 railway stations under Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to “airport-like standards” as part of a Rs 1 lakh crore station redevelopment programme; Dimapur railway station, among the 11 and despite being the second-highest revenue generating station under NFR, still grapples with lack of sanitation and basic passenger amenities. Despite enormous potential and the fact that the increase in volume of passengers is evident each day, instead poor infrastructures and insufficient amenities translate into injustice. During the past weeks, the rush for seats witnessed thousands of travellers jostling for space due lack of seats and packing themselves into coaches like sardines. The election as well as Bihu during the past few weeks transformed Dimapur station into a sea of desperate humanity, a scene that should not have happened. In the last few days, there have been several com-

plaints from passengers in Dimapur of having to share their seats with other passengers despite possessing a valid reserved ticket. On speaking to railway officials here trains plying from Dimapur to lower Assam in the morning were packed to the brim and there were even reports of some people forced to sit in the driver’s cabin. When this Reporter checked with the ticket enquiry counter about the volume of passengers it
was learnt that the increase of passengers travelling, particularly towards Hojai and Lanka in Assam was fairly frequent. An official at Dimapur railway station informed that the volume of passengers returning to Dimapur would continue to remain “very high for the next few days”. When asked about lack of preparedness by the NFR in providing special arrangements for additional trains to accommodate excessive passen-
gers, the official said that it required authorisation from a higher level. According to Officer in-Charge of Government Railway Police Ser vice (GRPS) IL Imchen, the first point of contact in case any passengers were forced to share their reserved seat was travelling ticket examiners (TTEs). In case, the TTEs were not able to address their issue, the matter can be further brought to the attention of chief ticket inspector (CTI) and finally to GRPS. Another railway official advised passengers to dial “emergency helpline number 182” in case of any harassment or if coerced into sharing their reserved seats. In terms of passenger facilities, Dimapur railway station still lags behind even in comparison with smaller nearby railway stations which have witnessed major developments in the last few years. Dimapur has only one platform (No.1) with a canopy and those boarding or alighting at platform No.2 are subject to the ravages of rains, hot sun or chilly winter night due to absence of canopy.
IS claims responsibility for Lanka blasts
COLOMBO, APR 23 (PTI): The Islamic State Tuesday claimed responsibility for the devastating Easter blasts in Sri Lanka and identified the seven suicide bombers who were involved in the attacks that killed 321 people and wounded more than 500 others. In a statement issued through its propaganda ‘Amaq’ news agency, the ISIS said that “the executors of the attack that targeted citizens of coalition states and Christians in Sri Lanka two days ago were with the group,” according to the Site Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activities. The statement identified the attackers as Abu Ubayda, Abu al-Mukhtar, Abu Khalil, Abu Hamza, Abu al-Bara’a, Abu Muhammad and Abu Abdullah, and their respective targets. It said Abu Hamza detonated his vest in the St Anthony’s Church in Colombo, Abu Khalil blew himself up in the St Sebastian’s Church in Negombo and Abu Muhammad in the Zion Church. The rest of the (Cont’d on p-7) attackers targeted hotels.
Cong moves EC against Modi ‘road show’ Congress asks Patton to NEW DELHI, APR 23 (PTI): Congress on Tuesday moved the EC alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took out a “road show” after casting his vote as well as made political remarks in violation of the model code of conduct, and demanded that a campaign ban of 2-3 days be imposed on him for being an “uncaring offender”. The opposition party also made a representation to the Election Commission (EC) over alleged model code of conduct violation by BJP chief Amit Shah and demanded a 72-hour campaign ban on him. The Congress delegation comprising Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Jairam Ramesh and K Raju told the EC that Shah “openly raised Balakot air strikes, Pulwama attack and armed forces” while seeking votes in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. The party strongly
raised the issue of alleged violation of the model code of conduct by the Prime Minister. After casting his vote in Ahmedabad, Modi walked some distance from the polling booth and interacted briefly with mediapersons. “Prime Minister is occupying a high post. The bigger the post, the bigger the responsibility. We have told the Election Commission that instead of caring about the responsibility, the Prime Minister is repeatedly violating the model code of conduct,” Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters outside the EC. He said the Congress had written to the EC last night complaining about the “violation of the model code of conduct” by Modi after casting his vote in the past. “Our prediction came true as in today’s polling after casting his vote, the
Prime Minister took out a long road show, gave speeches and political statements soon after voting,” Singhvi said. There has never been such clear and transparent violation of the model code of conduct, Singhvi alleged. “We told the EC that he is a habitual, egregious, and completely uncaring offender. He doesn’t care for the EC,” the Congress leader said. “It is very distressing and sad. There is no point taking 5-10 days before responding. We said action should be taken against the PM within hours and a campaign ban be imposed on him for 48 or 72 hours,” he said. The Congress memorandum to the EC alleged that the Prime Minister had made detailed plans to undertake, in defiance of electoral laws, a roadshow before and after he voted.
resign for violation of MCC
DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has renewed its demand for the resignation of Y.Patton deputy chief minister for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) which it said, was vindicated by the repoll ordered by the Election Commission at Polling Station No.31 under 37 Tyui assembly constituency. NPCC’s communication department renewed its allegation that Patton had violated the MCC besides committing “criminal offence of voting multiple times in full view of came” during polling on April 11. NPCC said since the state returning officer and DC & ARO Wokha had given “clean chit to Patton wrongdoings” it had to lodge FIR with Wokha Police Station against the “misdeeds” of Patton and
the “complicity of polling officials in this entire episode.” NPCC reiterated that Patton has “no moral authority” to remain in office after having “lowered the dignity of the office he occupies and for disgracing the people of Nagaland by his shameful conduct.” The party also maintained that Patton ought to resign immediately “if he has any sense of responsibility left in him” or that chief minister Neiphiu Rio should immediately sack him. The Congress also expressed gratitude to the Election Commission while also demanding strong action against those polling officials who not only failed to uphold the law but “abetted” the deputy chief minister “in his shameful and criminal conduct.”
