support violence pre-planned: SC

NEW DELHI, JUN 24 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday upheld the SIT’s clean chit to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and 63 others in the 2002 riots and said there is no “tittle of material” to support the allegation that violence after the Godhra incident was a “pre-planned event” owing to the conspiracy hatched at the highest level in the state. Bringing the curtains down on the bid to reopen the probe, the apex court said the material collected during the investigation does not “give rise to strong or grave suspicion regarding hatching of larger criminal conspiracy at the highest level” for causing mass violence against Muslims. The top court said the

proceedings in the matter have been pursued since 2006 “to keep the pot boiling, obviously, for ulterior design.” “Suffice it to observe that there is no tittle of material, much less tangible material to support the plea of the appellant that the Godhra incident unfolded on February 27, 2002, and the events which followed, were a pre-planned event owing to the criminal conspiracy hatched at the highest level in the state,” a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said in its 452-page judgement, which included annexure.

The bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and C T Ravikumar, dismissed a plea by slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri’s wife Zakia Jafri who had alleged a larger conspiracy during the 2002 violence and had challenged the Gujarat High Court’s October 5, 2017 order rejecting her petition against the SIT decision. Terming Zakia Jafri’s plea as devoid of merit, the bench said “intriguingly, the present proceedings have been pursued for last 16 years (from submission of complaint dated June 8, 2006, running into 67 pages and then by filing protest petition dated April 15, 2013, running into 514 pages) including with the audacity to question the integrity of every functionary involved in the process of exposing the devious stratagem adopted (to borrow the submission of learned counsel for the SIT), to keep the pot boiling, obviously, for ulterior design.”

Nagaland ranks 7th in country in financial literacy Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 24 (NPN): Nagaland ranks seventh among the states on financial literacy, as per 2019 national financial literacy and inclusion survey. This was stated by National Stock Exchange (NSE) Academy Ltd. chief manager, Ranganathan S during an awareness programme on financial management education for secondary students held at Greenwood School here on Friday that was jointly organised by Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) and NSE. mapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts attended the programme. Speaking on the occasion, Ranganathan said Nagaland was far ahead with bigger states and credited it to the students, for being among the top states. As financial literacy is one of

the most undermined skills that could determine the countries’ future, Ranganathan stressed that financial literacy was an important skill and students of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 should be taught this. He asserted that when a student had financial literacy, he or shew knew and

understood the importance of savings, balancing, spending and multiple doubling. He said NSE Academy was privileged to partner with NBSE since 2014. He mentioned that every year there was an increase in financial literacy of students in Nagaland, and credited NBSE for this by driving the mission. In his speech, additional commissioner of taxes CGST, Sashi Wapang shared his personal experience and remarked that putting money under the ground earlier was the safest way to save, but now there were many ways to not only save money but also let the money grow.

He said financial literacy was about the relationship between an individual and his or her money, “how to earn, save and grow”. He maintained that, as per statistics, financial literacy rate was still very poor in the country with only 27.9% Indians being financially literate, which basically meant that three-fourths of the country’s population had no idea how to look after their money. He asked the gathering to consider themselves fortunate to learn about money and hoped that they would take this as a wisdom that would help them later in life. (Cont’d on p-8)

Newer Omicron subvariants escape immunity 30 per cent jump in daily Covid cases Over 42L deaths provided by vax, previous infection: Study prevented in India due to vax: Study

NEW DELHI, JUN 24 (ANI): COVID-19 vaccination drive in India prevented over 42 lakh deaths in 2021, according to the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, which is based on findings on estimates of “excess” mortalities in the country during the pandemic. According to a new projection set to be published in the Lancet journal Friday, COVID-19 vaccination may have helped reduce number of deaths to almost a third of what they would have been around the world including by approximately 2.7 million to 5.3 million in India. JERUSALEM, JUN 24 (PTI): The newer Omicron sub variants of SARS-CoV-2 substantially escape neutralising antibodies induced by both vaccination and previous infection, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study provides the immunologic context for current surges among populations with high rates of vaccinations and previous infection, the researchers said. Since the initial highly

infectious SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant -- known as BA.1 -- of COVID-19 emerged last year, its new subvariants continue to evolve. The researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Israel evaluated antibody response to multiple SARSCoV-2 Omicron subvariants in 27 vaccinated and boosted individuals and 27 individuals who had previously contracted COVID-19. They found that the three Omicron subvariants

of the Center for Vaccine and Virology Research at BIDMC. “This has important public health implications and provides the immunologic context for current surges among populations with high rates of vaccinations and previous infection,” Barouch said. The researchers noted that new variants that emerge may be more transmissible and may more effectively bypass the immune protection from prior infection or vaccination.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 4.32 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 3.07 per cent, according to the ministry. The count of active cases has increased to 88,284, comprising 0.20 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.59 per cent, it said. An increase of 4,294 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, the data showed. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to

4,27,49,056, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.21 per cent.

Nagaland logs 1 fresh Covid case

DIMAPUR, JUN 24 (NPN): Nagaland on Friday registered one fresh Covid-19 case in Dimapur. The total Covid-19 caseload in the Sttae stood at 35505. The death toll remained unchanged at 761 (including 4 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). BA.2.12.1, BA.4, and BA.5 substantially escape neutralising antibodies induced by both vaccination and previous infection. Neutralising antibody responses to BA.4 and BA.5 were approximately 20-fold lower than to the original WA1/2020 strain and were 3-fold lower than to the Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variants. “Our findings suggest that the Omicron variants have continued to evolve,” said study senior author Dan H Barouch, director

WASHINGTON, JUN 24 (AP): The Supreme Court of the United States has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump. The ruling came more than a month after the stunning leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito

indicating the court was prepared to take this momentous step. Alito, in the final opinion issued Friday, wrote that Roe and Planned Parent-

hood v. Casey, the 1992 decision that reaffirmed the right to abortion, were wrong the day they were decided and must be overturned. “We hold that Roe and Casey

must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision,” Alito wrote. Authority to regulate abortion rests with the political branches, not the courts, Alito wrote. Joining Alito were Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. The latter three justices are Trump appointees. Thomas first voted to overrule Roe 30 years ago. Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan — the diminished liberal wing of the court — were in dissent. K Y M C
