President’s Message

The 2022 NAFA Technical Seminar wrapped in Louisville, Kentucky at the beginning of April and I am happy to report that we had a very successful conference. Many thanks to our NAFA Board and Program Committee for another successful event. True to NAFA’s mission, “To Be The Global Source for Expertise, Education & Best Practices in Air Filtration,” we increased our certifications, we learned from high quality speakers and technical content, and we gained more knowledge and insights from incredible networking opportunities.

It was great to have our first 100% in-person Technical Seminar since the beginning of the pandemic. It’s been so important to learn from technical experts, industry insiders and each other as we all navigate through these incredibly unpredictable times. As NAFA members, we play an important role in keeping people safe and productive by ensuring our customers have the right air filtration and solutions for the right applications. An important message that was consistent with a number of speakers is that while the importance of our work has been elevated due to COVID-19, our role must maintain its importance even past this pandemic. Better air filtration and indoor air quality strategies is important to reduce any type of virus spread whether it is COVID-19 or the common cold or seasonal flu. We were also reminded that better filtration paired with improved ventilation also reduces the levels of TVOCs that can have adverse effects in indoor air environments. And we know that better air filtration and IAQ can improve the level of cognitive function.

At the seminar, and on a weekly basis, we are reminded of the vulnerability of our supply chain and labor supply. Not only do we compete in our own industry for materials and people, but we

are also competing with many other industries at the same time. A good way to de-risk your vulnerability is to be well connected in the industry with NAFA members as they can help you navigate the unpredictable challenges. We also know that engaged employees are long term employees so it's important that we lean on NAFA as a resource for education and certification.

As a board, we continue to work on our strategic plan that will lay NAFA’s foundation for the next three years. NAFA needs to focus on raising its presence in our industry to ensure that we are advocating for clean air and best practices that will extend past COVID-19. The strategic plan will be complete and presented at our General Meeting at NAFA’s 2022 Annual Convention in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. We are building our plan around four themes:

(1) Increase Knowledge

(2) Engage Members

(3) Raise Awareness

(4) Streamline Operations. We look forward to sharing the completed plan and the key strategic initiatives that will help us reach our future association goals.

Our association is excited about future opportunities and we continue to look for more opportunities to engage members, enrich our knowledge and improve air filtration for our customers. ■

All my best,

Don't forget, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please drop me a line at president@nafahq.org.

Helping to Save the World from COVID-19: why an urban air pollution engineer got involved, and what she did to makes things better

Shelly Miller, PhD, Professor University of Colorado Boulder Keynote Speaker

Shelly L. Miller, Ph.D., is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and faculty in

the Environmental Engineering Program at the University of Colorado Boulder, holding an M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of California, Berkeley and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College. Dr. Miller teaches about and investigates urban air quality and works diligently to understand the impact of air pollution on public health and the environment. She is also an expert on indoor environmental quality including airborne infectious disease transmission and control and air cleaning technologies.

As the COVID-19 pandemic moves across the world, scientists work around the clock to better understand how the SARS-CoV-2 virus is transmitted, the details of the symptoms and illness, and how to stop the spread of the virus. Engineers, such as Dr. Miller, have provided crucial information to the public and leaders that transmission happens when respiratory particles released while breathing, talking, singing, coughing and sneezing are inhaled and what to do about it. Dr. Miller highlighted the steps she took to make things better, including collaborating with a group of international scientists on COVID, understanding super spreading events and the Skagit Valley Chorale outbreak, documenting how musicians and performers release aerosol and how to these reduce emissions, she also discussed the benefits of ventilation, filtration and germicidal ultraviolet light.

Upper-room, and In-duct UVGI as a Supplement to Ventilation and Filtration

Bill Palmer, CAFS, President AeroMed Technologies, LLC

Bill Palmer is president of AeroMed Technologies, LLC which installs and services air purification equipment.  His focus is on infection control engineering for health care and other facilities, where he applies air filtration to prevent the spread of airborne pathogens.  Bill is a member of ASHRAE and of NAFA, serving on its guidelines committee.  Bill has been in the air filtration industry since 1982 and was the Recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Service Award.

Much of the focus for reducing the risk of aerosol transmission in indoor spaces has been on increased ventilation or increased air filtration. However, every building is different and often additional layers of protection are required to fit the specific needs of the building or the building occupants. Bill shared experiences from his long career as a CAFS and as a Certified Environmental Infection Control Consultant and discussed how utilizing UVGI, whether in the air handlers, in duct work or in the upper-room, may compliment ventilation and air filtration while providing an extra layer of protection.

Committee Updates

The NAFA Committees continue to work diligently to ensure NAFA grows and promotes the best interests of the air filtration industry.

Education & Training

The committee’s goal is to produce a quarterly webinar. May’s topic is Air Filtration in Travel. If you have ideas for topics, please let us know (nafa@nafahq.org). If you are interested in speaking at a future conference or webinar, visit the NAFA website and under Events complete the “Open Call for Air Filtration Education.” We would love to hear from you!

Marketing & Membership

The committee has been meeting monthly. The group continued its work in refining the Clean Air Award nomination and renewal process. Also discussed was creating some specification language to create standardization and demand for best indoor air quality practices by end users. The Committee has also recently created collateral to engage end-users around NAFA Members and volunteer engagement.

Guidelines

The committee’s goal is to release one new and one updated guideline each year. Bill Palmer is currently leading a subcommittee to review and update the guideline for Airborne Infections Containment Rooms in Health Care Facilities

Kevin Delahunt is reviewing all "in-progress" guidelines that were put on hold due to COVID-19, and he is working on position papers for airborne infectious disease in public spaces and in support of the U.S. government specification that a professional individual should change filters in ACIR situations.

Technical & Certification

The committee is reviewing the questions for the CAFS and NCT exams and putting together a plan of action for the rewrite of the Installation, Operation & Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems

SSPC 52.2 has made many updates and upgrades over the last few years in order to improve the standard. Many of those updates are meant to increase the repeatability and reproducibility of intra- and inter-lab test results. Recent upgrades include an optional method to determine filter efficiency in removing or inactivating airborne viruses and bacteria. The addition of a Particulate Matter (PM) calculated filter efficiency by using current available data points from the 52.2 test. Todd summarized in detail all the updates and upgrades and touched on what is next for 52.2.

Low-cost Indoor Air Quality Sensors

Jordan D. Clark, PhD

The Ohio State University

Dr. Jordan Clark is a building scientist and Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University.  Dr Clark’s research is concerned with reducing energy use and carbon emissions attributed to indoor environmental control.  He is a recognized leader in the area of indoor air quality sensing and data-driven control of indoor environments.

As in many engineering problems, the control of our indoor environments is rapidly moving from a prescriptive, rule-of-thumb paradigm to a fully data-

www.nafahq.org 5

driven paradigm, enabled by the internet of things. The first step in such a shift is being able to generate data reliably and cheaply with low-cost sensing. Dr. Clark looked at several studies of the performance of low-cost airborne pollutant sensors and discussed their strengths and weaknesses and domain of application.

In 2006, NAFA started the Hall of Fame to recognize outstanding individuals in the air filter industry. The NAFA Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding achievement in the air filter industry by NAFA members. These individuals will have contributed significantly to NAFA by way of their service and have a reputation in good standing among the membership.

MANN+HUMMEL Solidifies North American Presence with Full Acquisition of Pamlico Air

With the full acquisition of Pamlico Air, MANN+HUMMEL will accelerate the growth in the indoor air filtration market, one of the largest and fastest growing filtration segments. The subsidiaries Tri-Dim, Tri-Dim Hardy and now Pamlico Air combine forces to form the MANN+HUMMEL’s Air Filtration Americas group.

Louisa, VA, January 28, 2022 – MANN+HUMMEL, a global filtration solutions provider, today announced the close of an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of Pamlico Air, resulting in 100 percent ownership of the company. Since March 2021, MANN+HUMMEL has been holding a majority share in Pamlico Air. Pamlico Air, a US manufacturer and provider of high-quality indoor air filtration products for mainly the retail and wholesale market, will complement the existing air filtration portfolio of MANN+HUMMEL subsidiaries Tri-Dim, Tri-Dim Hardy, which focuses primarily on the commercial and industrial air filtration aftermarket.

“With the vision to enable cleaner mobility, air, and water, MANN+HUMMEL has been actively expanding through both, acquisitions and organic growth, in the air filtration market,” said Fua Nipah, President & General Manager Life Sciences & Environment of MANN+HUMMEL. “With the acquisition of Tri-Dim in 2018, Hardy Filtration in 2019, and now with the full acquisition of Pamlico Air in 2022, we have essentially created a North American powerhouse in air filtration, covering retail, wholesale and the commercial aftermarket in the region. ■

Solidifying Partnerships - MANN+HUMMEL’s Air Filtration Americas to Move to Distributor-Based Sales Model

Louisa, 7 March 2022 – MANN+HUMMEL’s Air Filtration Americas, a leader in indoor air filtration and home of leading brands of Tri-Dim, Tri-Dim Hardy and Pamlico Air, have announced they are embracing a new business model. The company is moving from a direct sales approach to a distributor-based model for all three of their North American air filtration brands. The purpose of this move is to continue the acceleration of MANN+HUMMEL’s growth potential, as the indoor air filtration market is one of the largest and fastest growing filtration segments.

“By joining forces with select distributors, we will cultivate those strong relationships, becoming a unified team to support the dynamic growth of indoor air filtration products in North America,” said Shawn Windley, President of MANN+HUMMEL Air Filtration Americas. “Tri-Dim, Tri-Dim Hardy and Pamlico Air have all been on an aggressive growth path, which we expect to continue well into the future, especially as the demand for indoor air filtration strengthens. Our customers can rest assured that this move will not have any impact on the superior service and technical support programs that we are recognized for throughout the industry.”

The move to a distributor-based model is currently under way, with the expectation to be complete in the near future. “We are very excited about the great potential of these solid partnerships and look forward to growth and success under his new business model,” continued Windley.

Two months ago, MANN+HUMMEL announced the full acquisition of Pamlico Air, a US manufacturer and provider of highquality indoor air filtration products for mainly the retail and wholesale market, and the subsequent creation of MANN+HUMMEL Air Filtration Americas team. Since March 2021, MANN+HUMMEL had been holding a majority share in Pamlico Air. ■

Beyer Introduces Air Ventilation Legislation as Monthly Jobs Report Shows More Americans Returning To In-Person Work

Airborne Act

Joint Economic Committee

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), who chairs Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, today announced the introduction of the Airborne Act, legislation that would incentivize nonresidential building owners to conduct indoor air quality assessments (IAQ) and upgrade their ventilation and air filtration systems. The bill introduction followed a sharp uptick in workers returning to in-person work in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

2022“Improving indoor air quality reduces the risk of COVID-19 transmission, but it also can benefit employers and workers by reducing sick days, creating a cleaner and more comfortable work environment, and lessening the risk of long-term health conditions,” said Rep. Beyer. “The COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the dangers of airborne respiratory diseases and the importance of adequate indoor ventilation and indoor air quality, but the improved HVAC and air filtration systems necessary to improve air quality can be expensive to install and maintain. Our bill would use the tax code to give building owners incentives to perform IAQ inspections and upgrades, which would make our make workplaces safer from both the threat of Covid and future airborne disease outbreaks.”

ASHRAE, leading society of HVAC&R and building systems engineers, provided technical input for this legislation.

“As the pandemic has shown us, buildings play an important role in providing healthy environments in which to live, work and play. This includes protecting us from risk of infection from exposure to infectious aerosols like influenza and the virus that causes COVID-19,” said Jeff Littleton, Executive Vice President of ASHRAE. “ASHRAE is pleased that elected officials like Congressman Beyer are recognizing the importance of buildings to occupants’ health and wellbeing, and we appreciate that technical comments from ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force were incorporated into this legislation. We hope that this legislation will help building owners and managers make the needed evaluations and investments to upgrade building systems and their operation and maintenance to improve health outcomes, increase productivity and learning capacity.”

NAFA Air Media22

Specifically, the Airborne Act would:

• Incentivize commercial building owners to conduct IAQ assessments of their properties by providing them with a $1 per square foot tax credit, not to exceed the cost of conducting the assessment.

• ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, is the foundation to which ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force recommendations are based.

• Create a Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Agency voluntary certification program for property owners to certify that their properties are in compliance with the IAQ standards outlined above.

• Eligible recipients also include non-profits and for certain public properties, the credit is transferable to the appropriate private entity carrying out the upgrade.

NAFA Guidelines Update

The NAFA Guidelines Committee has updated the 2012 Guideline for Commercial Office Spaces. You can check out all our guidelines here: https://www.nafahq.org/nafa-best-practice-guidelines/. NAFA publishes a series of air filtration best practice guidelines based on these industry codes, but that go further to recommend and incorporate the “highest level of air filtration standards” for specific applications.

Executive Profile

Jeron Downing, CAFS

How did you get your start in the filter industry? Like many NAFA members my age, I was born into the industry. Most don’t wake up and have a eureka moment of “I want to sell air filters!”

My mom and dad founded the company and it became the go to summer job while still in school. Once out of college, I joined the sales team. I had the unfortunate timing of starting right when the financial crisis hit so it was a tough start. As hard as that was, the takeaway was you quickly realized the value of relationship selling. While there might not be as much money moving around, if you put the customer first you will always have an ally. From there, I was lucky enough to get to be part of the NAFA leadership group and move through the board all the way to the NAFA President role. Many valuable lessons were learned from long tenured business minds during that eight year period.

What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces?

The biggest challenge the air filter industry faces right now is a shortage of people to be able to consistently manufacturer product. It starts from the highest up in the supply chain all the way down to the distribution. If you can’t make enough filter media, beverage board, or glue to put it all together, nothing downstream can happen. Those that are able to navigate those problems are having the most success.

How has your company benefited from NAFA membership.

Jeron Downing is President at Dave Downing and Associates was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Global Business Management.

Jeron is married to Annie, and has two wonderful children.

Jeron has 22 years of experience in the air filter industry and is a NAFA Past President.

What is the most challenging aspect running a filter company

There are many challenges when it comes to running a filter company, or any company for that matter. Having the right people is always the hardest part. When there are labor shortages and demand for good employees, keeping the talent is on the forefront every week. Having a culture that encourages hard work, but does not do it to the point of stressing everyone out, has been a key focus.

As you grow, “taking away” duties from someone can be met with challenges, but in the long run is required to keep the growth.

Like everyone in the industry, keeping up with product as demand continues to rise has been a major challenge. Shortages for material across the country and transportation to move it are major sticking points. The need for larger, more localized suppliers is growing in support. Those that are willing to invest are taking market share from the well known incumbents.

What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you?

The best business advice I received wasn’t a single conversation, but a life long series of examples. When you have parents that are engaged, hard working, and will literally give you the shirt off their back, it sets the example of how to be a better person. That tone has carried over to business because it makes you appreciate treating everyone fairly. There are times a customer might not always be right, but being fair and equitable can diffuse a situation and have a positive outcome for everyone.

NAFA has been a huge help to Dave Downing and Associates. Over the last 25 years, it has been a true breeding ground for relationships in the industry. From new vendors to our RT Group, it is a hub for all things air filter related. The seminars are often packed with speakers that keep you up to date on current topics happening. When you have been in the industry for 20 years, it is easy to lose focus, but there is always a little nugget of information from every seminar that helps trigger a fresh idea to bring back to the company. Being a NAFA member brings instant credibility because it proves you are willing to learn more about the industry and focus on best practices. ■

Dave Downing and Associates (DDA) was founded in 1981 by Dave and Linda Downing. The early beginnings started with the introduction into the industry by Greg Jennings and Rick Peckham, both at the time were with Farr. The need to move to a distributorship landed the company with the Airguard product line and the start of the family business. From there, the operation grew from the kitchen table to a small leased warehouse. From a small warehouse to the first company owned warehouse. Fast forward 40 years and the company now operates out of multiple locations across the Phoenix metropolitan area.

“Being a NAFA member brings instant credibility because it proves you are willing to learn more about the industry and focus on best practices.”

INCREASING EFFICIENCY AND PREVENTING DOWNTIME FOR DATA CENTERS

BACKGROUND

Data centers operate 24/7 with zero tolerance for service interruption and depend heavily on an energy efficient cooling system to prevent servers from overheating. Keeping equipment performing smoothly, without excess power disruption, can save a data center operator millions of dollars a year. An American company specializing in building data centers and a leader in global colocation data center market share addressed their collapsing filters at one of their California locations.

CHALLENGES

The building involved in this case study uses heat exchangers that are cooled by evaporative cooling systems. Four-inch MERV 8 pleats filter the air before the air passes the humidification media. The disposable filters were getting loaded with significant amounts of large particulates, causing excessive pressure-drop, leading to the eventual filter collapse. As filter media becomes dirty and airflow is restricted, fan speed for the evaporative cooling units needs to be increased. In addition to an energy efficiency issue, the pleated filters being used were not rated to withstand the additional static pressure, which increased filter collapse risk.

As the filters collapse in one cooling unit, that unit is shut down, which causes the other units to work harder to maintain the ideal temperature needed to keep the servers cool. This is particularly concerning should the unit go down during the day while outside temperatures are running high. Service at a data center cannot be interrupted, regardless of surrounding conditions. The site engineer called in Total Filtration Services (TFS) to discuss the filter collapse issue.

be simply brushed or hosed clean, with zero downtime. Various mount options are available, including Permatron’s patented MagnaMount® earth magnets, which take minutes to install, without drilling or tools. A short trial was run on two of the evaporative cooling units to ensure they would provide the needed protection to the pleats without excessive energy consumption. The PreVent air intake filter screens successfully protected both cooling units and prevented the pleated air filters from collapsing. Upon confirming their effectiveness, the customer moved forward with purchasing enough screens to protect all 14 of the evaporative cooling units for the facility.

Since outfitting each unit with the protective prefilter screens, the site engineer for this facility has reported the following improvements:

• The cooling system is running more robust and reliable because it is operating efficiently without unscheduled disturbances.

• Increased focus on preventative maintenance as opposed to unscheduled maintenance allows labor to be used more efficiently. PreVent screens can be quicky cleaned and re-applied in half the time as compared to replacing an unscheduled collapsed filter, which requires shutting down the unit, getting the replacement filters from another building, changing them out, and discarding the collapsed filters.

• Increased energy efficiency due to the cooling system not having to work harder to account for down units. Additionally, the airflow restriction of the PreVent is negligible, which is a common concern for any customer considering equipment protection.

• Product costs have been reduced because the pleated filters are meeting their life expectancy. Replacement pleats are ordered only to maintain the quarterly change-out schedule, eliminating the need to purchase additional stock for emergencies.

RESULTS

TFS recommended mounting PreVent® air intake filter screens to the outside of the cooling units to prefilter and prevent the larger particulates from reaching the pleated filters and system coils. Custom-made in the USA by Permatron, PreVent screens are designed to fit any air intake, and can
