NAFA President
In today's rapidly evolving air filtration industry, one thing remains constant: great people drive great markets. The success of our companies and the industry as a whole hinges on the development of our teams and the leadership we foster within our organizations.
Now more than ever, it’s crucial to prioritize the growth of your leaders. Invest in them, mentor them, and give them the tools to excel. Strong leadership is the foundation for long-term business success.
Equally important is training our salespeople on the value of persistence. The key to long-term customer relationships is simple: consistent follow-up. Engaging with your prospects and maintaining a meaningful connection with your customers will build trust and loyalty that lasts far beyond the initial sale.
I encourage you all to take an active role in industry associations like the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA). NAFA offers invaluable resources for developing the skills and expertise of professionals in our field. Work on getting all the certifications including the NCT and NCT II, not just the CAFS. Submit Clean Air Awards and attend conferences. By getting involved, you’re not only investing in your company’s future but also in the future of the entire industry.
Our market is driven by the talent we cultivate. Let’s invest in our people, strengthen our leadership, and continue building a future where our teams are equipped to thrive and lead the way.
Sincerely,
Patrick Rosenthal, CAFS, NCT

The NAFA 2024 Annual Convention in Maui was a resounding success. With 243 attendees, the event saw a significant increase in participation compared to the previous year, creating a vibrant atmosphere of engagement and exchange.
The convention commenced with welcoming remarks from NAFA President Patrick Rosenthal, who expressed his enthusiasm for the impressive turnout and acknowledged the valuable contributions of new members and sponsors. Alex Chausovsky, a renowned expert in economics and labor market trends, delivered the first keynote address. Chausovsky provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of the current economic climate and its potential impact on the air filtration industry, emphasizing the critical role of data-driven decisionmaking in navigating the challenges ahead.
The keynote was followed by a series of engaging roundtable discussions, where participants delved into pressing topics such as labor market dynamics, automation opportunities, industry consolidation, AI advancements, and customer relationship management. These discussions fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences among attendees.
The afternoon concluded with a golf tournament offering attendees a chance to network in a relaxed setting, and a dolphin sail for those seeking a unique Maui experience.
Day two featured another insightful presentation by Chausovsky, this time focusing on practical strategies for building a highperforming workforce. Drawing on his extensive experience in the recruiting industry, Chausovsky offered actionable advice on attracting, hiring, and retaining top talent in today's competitive landscape, empowering the audience with valuable insights.
Next, Billy Southerland, CEO of IronRoad, a professional employer organization, took the stage to discuss the advantages of outsourcing and group purchasing strategies. Southerland highlighted the benefits of partnering with PEOs, ASOs, and HROs to optimize human resource management, emphasizing the importance of focusing on core competencies and leveraging external expertise to drive business growth.
The day's final session was led by Jon Schreibfeder, president of Effective Inventory Management, Inc., who shared valuable insights on balancing inventory, customer service, and profitability. Schreibfeder stressed the significance of data analysis, inventory ranking, and a thorough understanding of carrying costs in achieving optimal inventory management.
The evening culminated in a women's networking event, which facilitated connections and support among female industry professionals. This was followed by a memorable luau on the beach, which showcased Hawaiian culture and hospitality.
Day three began with a business meeting and awards ceremony presided over by Rosenthal. He announced NAFA's robust financial standing and outlined key initiatives for the upcoming year, including a new monthly podcast, enhanced flexibility in certification proctoring, updated training videos, a streamlined
award submission platform, increased participation in industry events, and a renewed focus on strategic planning.
The convention recognized Larry Ost and Tom Riddell for their outstanding contributions to the air filtration industry with prestigious Hall of Fame awards. Ost, a pioneer in the field, was commended for his leadership, product innovation, and dedication to research, while Riddell , a founding member and past president of NAFA, was honored for his instrumental role in developing the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration.
Kevin Delahunt, chair of the NAFA Guidelines Committee, then presented a preview of his upcoming presentation at the AHR Expo on optimizing the design of HVAC filtration systems. He actively engaged the audience in a discussion to gather feedback and refine his message for the Expo.
The convention concluded with closing remarks from Randy Brannen, who underscored the importance of trust, commitment, and genuine human connection in fostering successful business relationships. He shared personal anecdotes that illustrated the power of building strong bonds with customers, colleagues, and industry partners.
Patrick Rosenthal delivered final remarks expressing gratitude to the sponsors, planning committee, and staff for their dedication in organizing a successful event. He also announced the locations for the upcoming Technical Seminar in Tempe, Arizona, and the 2025 Annual Convention in Newport, Rhode Island.

The labor market feels and looks quite different today than the frenzied beast we witnessed in 2021 and 2022. Its pace of expansion is slower and more sustainable, the imbalance between labor supply and demand has moderated significantly, and wage growth has decelerated to levels that are closer to historic norms and more manageable for firms. The latter factor, a particularly painful development that companies of all sizes struggled with during the fervor of the post-pandemic job market boom, is welcome news for NAFA members.
Today, the proverbial pendulum has swung from squarely in the candidate’s corner to a more balanced position, where neither job seekers nor employers have a disproportionate amount of power and sway. The Great Resignation is firmly in our rear-view mirror, and while layoffs are still low by historic standards, most people
today feel grateful to be gainfully employed. In other words, welcome to the new normal.
This normalization has been occurring steadily for the better part of the last two years. Compared with the average monthly gain of 399,000 seen in 2022, job growth averaged 225,000 per month in 2023. So far in 2024, the average has declined further to just over 200,000 jobs per month. As the pace of job growth decelerated, the unemployment rate gradually crept up from the 3.4% last seen in early 2023, while average annual wage growth has meaningfully moderated, alleviating cost pressures for many employers. These developments show that, while substantially slower than in the previous two years, the labor market remains healthy, at least for now.
However, the latest data also provides signs of a tangible slowdown. Although this month’s jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which showed that nonfarm employment rose by 254,000 jobs in September, surpassed expectations, it’s evident that the US economy is adding jobs at a slower pace in the last six months than it did in the previous six months. The unemployment rate stands at 4.1%, about half a percent higher than last year, while wage growth has cooled to 4.0% year-over-year for the past 12 months. This data reflects what many people have felt for quite some time, that the labor market and the overall economy may be running cooler than the headline macro numbers suggest.
To get a real sense of the labor market’s vitality today – in late 2024 – a review of some of the latest report’s details is warranted. Leisure & Hospitality (+78,000), Healthcare (+72,000), Government (+31,000), and Construction (+25,000) accounted for more than 80% of all new job gains in September. In contrast, the Manufacturing industry, which includes many NAFA member companies, lost 7,000 jobs last month.
The concentration of job gains in a few key industries is not a new development. In 2023, more than half of all new jobs created were in the healthcare, leisure & hospitality, and government sectors. A much smaller percentage of the jobs generated last year were in the manufacturing and distribution space. Today, manufacturers and distributors alike are cutting back headcount expansion plans in the face of increasing macroeconomic headwinds, while continuing to backfill key roles that become open due to attrition.
Although the unemployment rate is elevated compared to last year, it has ticked higher largely because hiring volumes aren't enough to keep up with new entrants to the labor force in recent months. The good news is that unemployment has not risen because of a sharp increase in layoffs. This dynamic partly alleviates concerns about triggering the Sahm rule, which is an economic theory that states a recession is probable if the three-month average of the unemployment rate exceeds the lowest unemployment rate over the past 12 months by 0.5 percentage points or more.
The deceleration in wage growth has been a welcome development for organizations of all sizes. According to data from ADP Research Institute, in mid-2022 job stayers were seeing changes in annual pay of nearly 8%, while those willing to change jobs were realizing compensation increases of 16%, on average. This created a dynamic where many companies had no choice but to pass on higher labor costs to their customers in the form of higher prices, contributing to the rapid rise in inflation we saw during that period.
The latest data from ADP shows that today, on average, job stayers are seeing annual pay increases of 4.7%, while job changers are still obtaining a premium at 6.6%, although that gap has closed significantly. This alleviates some of the pressure companies are feeling from rising payroll expenditures and makes it more manageable to remain profitable in the face of increasing costs in other parts of the business.
Hiring managers and recruiters report that compensation is still a challenge in the effort to hire (with many businesses still backfilling and adding new positions) and retain talent. In 2021 and 2022, the challenge was keeping up with rising pay demands during a period when many workers were quitting their jobs for higher pay elsewhere. The challenge has evolved to include compensation structures, job hierarchies, pay band creation, and compliance with pay transparency, all of which are pivotal to competitiveness given the changes in the labor market over the last few years, and the emergence of the new normal.

The National Air Filtration Association has announced its recipients of the Clean Air Awards for 2024. The Clean Air Award is presented each year to the building owners and managers who take steps to significantly improve the quality of their indoor air by increasing the level or efficiency of their HVAC air filtration system in 10 specific categories.
NAFA’s Executive Director, Emily Bardach, CAE, CNAP, congratulated the award winners by saying, "This year’s Clean Air Award submissions have been truly inspiring. As our members and their clients continue to navigate the evolving landscape of indoor air quality, the nominated facilities have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to providing healthier, cleaner environments. Their innovative approaches to filtration and system hygiene showcase the power of proactive measures in creating a more sustainable and well-being-focused built environment."
Candidates are nominated for the award by NAFA members and must submit detailed and specific steps taken toward cleaning the indoor environment through “best air filtration practices” and system hygiene. Nominees are judged by the NAFA Clean Air Award Committee, and each recipient receives a custom-designed award, building signage and recognition for their efforts. Award-winning buildings must maintain IAQ diligence and submit inspection data each year to maintain the NAFA Clean Air Award. Learn more about the Clean Air Award Program at CleanAirAward.org

TREY FLY President JOE FLY CO
Trey Fly, President of Joe Fly Company grew up in Dallas TX. Before graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, he worked for Joe Fly Co. and the O’Conner Brothers Ranch in the summers gaining valuable experience, work ethic, and understanding of how to work with people from all walks of life. He has worked full time for Joe Fly Co. since 2004 and is currently the CEO. Trey now lives in Austin TX with his beautiful wife Alison and 10 year old son, Ford – whose real name is Joe Wayne Fly IV. When Trey is not working, he enjoys spending time with family and friends and as many outdoor activities as possible.
Joe Fly Co was started in Dallas Tx in 1967 and has been run by three generations of the Fly family. Joe Fly Sr started the company and grew it in Dallas for many years. Legend has it that he was the first one to bring synthetic filters into the Texas market. Joe Fly Jr took over in the 80s and grew it to multiple locations and added many new products. During this time, Joe Fly Co became a well-known filtration solution provider in the state of Texas. Trey Fly became President in 2014 and has continued the growth started by his father and grandfather. Joe Fly Co now has 210 employees and 16 brick and mortar locations in 5 states. Joe Fly Co continues to focus on having expertise in the filtration industry and providing cost-saving solutions for their wide variety of customers. Joe Fly Co is aligned and striving to fulfill their mission of improving life’s most basic need – clean air. Three generations of Joe Fly’s have been active members of NAFA, with Joe Fly Jr and Trey Fly serving terms as President.
How did you get your start in the filter industry?
I grew up in the industry and have worked every role since summers in High School. My first experience was working in the warehouse prepping orders and stocking. Then in College I started to do service and coil cleaning during the summers. After college, I began my career in Sales where my experience in the warehouse and doing service helped me immensely.
How do you motivate your employees?
One of our Core Values is focus on Family and building fulfilling, meaningful careers for all of our employees. I believe motivation comes from working as a team towards a common goal and always having career advancement opportunities available. By working cohesively and providing the best possible service for our customers, we create more profit which enables us to take care of our employees. I think motivation comes naturally when our employees know that their efforts can directly impact their careers and their ability to take care of their families.
Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it?
I have been a Member of Vistage of almost 10 years now and my Mentor is my Vistage Chairman, Ed Stillman. Ed was a career salesman for 3M for many years and has given me so much knowledge about running a successful business. I look up to him both in business and as a wonderful family man. He is an incredible role model and mentor that has given me so much.
What's the best piece of advice anyone ever gave you?
I would say integrity is one of the most important things to me and my employees. “Doing the right thing” is always more important than “doing things right.” In fact, I would say if you do the right thing, things will always be right!
What is the most challenging aspect of running a filter company?
For us, I would say the most difficult thing is keeping our culture and processes consistent across 16 different locations. Geography makes it difficult to keep things in check. Each of our branches operates slightly differently from one another, which can be good or bad.
What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces?
I think it is a great niche industry with almost no limit in terms of customers. Anyone with air conditioning is a potential customer, so that is basically everyone. As far as challenge, I will speak from a distributor’s perspective. The biggest challenge I see if addressing the “Amazonification” of the world with a new generation of buyer that prefers “click to order” versus our historical method of relationship based, face to face interaction.
Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals?
If you really want to master your job, get to know your customers and their equipment. I always say “face to face” is great. But “hands-on” is the best. Knowing your customers and their equipment will tell you all you need to know to achieve success.
How has your company benefitted from NAFA membership?
NAFA has been foundational for many of the leaders of Joe Fly Co. Being involved in committees, attending seminars, and being on the Board has opened so many doors and given us so many ideas throughout the years. Industry training and certifications have been incredibly important to us. There are so many benefits to NAFA, but if I had to pick one thing, I think it would be knowing the members so well and creating a lifelong network on friends in the industry all over the world. Knowledge gained from sharing ideas with other members has been invaluable.
NAFA Executive Director
As we reflect on 2024, it’s clear that this year has been a remarkable one for NAFA.
