PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

MATT SOLIS, CAFS

President

Rensa Filtration

DEAR NAFA MEMBERS,

I am honored to serve as your NAFA President for 2025. This is truly an exciting time for our organization, and I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the past Presidents whose dedication and leadership have placed NAFA in a strong and vibrant position.

Today, NAFA stands as a healthy and thriving organization—well-positioned to make 2025 one of our most impactful years yet, with many more to follow.

In preparation for a strong future, the Board of Directors went above and beyond this year, dedicating additional time ahead of the Technical Seminar in Phoenix to focus on long-term strategic planning. With the help of a highly recommended strategic planning professional, we conducted in-depth surveys and conversations with both the board and our broader membership. The result? A clearer vision and roadmap for the next three years—and beyond. I want to personally thank the board for coming in early and contributing their time, ideas, and commitment to shaping NAFA’s future.

Thanks to NAFA’s sound financial footing, we were also able to take another important step forward by engaging a financial planner. This partnership will help us manage and grow our reserve funds responsibly, ensuring we are good stewards of NAFA’s resources while preparing for long-term sustainability.

I’m also thrilled to announce another milestone: the launch of two new research projects, a collaborative effort between NAFA and the NAFA Foundation. It’s been several years since our last research initiative, and this renewed investment reinforces our mission to be the go-to source for air filtration expertise. We’re eager to see the results and the value they will bring to our industry.

In addition, we are in the process of updating the CAFS video materials with a modern, high-quality production. These updated resources will be an excellent tool for preparing for the CAFS certification and serve as refreshers on the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration. We aim to have this complete in time for the Annual Conference.

None of this progress would be possible without the continued support of our sponsors. Your partnership is instrumental in everything we do, and we are deeply grateful for the trust you place in NAFA.

With such momentum behind us, I’m confident that 2025 will be a year of growth, innovation, and continued leadership in air filtration.

Sincerely,

President

After a quick break, we closed the day with a powerful keynote by Dr. James B. Maas , CEO of Sleep for Success. In “Unlock Your Peak Performance: The Power of Sleep,” he offered science-backed insights into how sleep affects leadership, decision-making, and workplace performance. Dr. Maas’s engaging talk resonated deeply, leaving many attendees thinking about how rest is a strategic part of success.

The day wrapped up with the Networking Reception generously sponsored by Graphic Packaging. This event was a highlight of the Seminar, giving attendees and sponsors time to reflect on the day’s content and build stronger industry connections.

ENGAGING ON DAY TWO

Thursday morning began with Networking Breakfast and committee meetings for both the Marketing & Membership Committee and the Technical & Certification Committee —both open to guests and well attended. These meetings are a core

part of NAFA’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Following opening remarks, Dustin Poppendieck of the National Institute of Standards and Technology delivered a standout session titled “The Chemistry of Portable Air Cleaners.” He provided a research-driven look into how portable air cleaners can influence indoor air chemistry—not just particulate matter— urging filtration professionals to think more holistically about the devices they recommend.

The Seminar concluded on a high note with a keynote from Lara Jones , Founder and CEO of Be A Legend and G.R.I.T. Global ™, titled “G.R.I.T. Through It™: The Science Behind Success.”

A nine-time STEVIE ® Award winner and creator of the Global G.R.I.T. System™, Lara energized the room with strategies to build personal resilience, develop aligned teams, and lead through challenge with grit and clarity.

Innovation in Air Quality

At MANN+HUMMEL, innovation drives everything we do. With over 75 years of expertise, we lead the air filtration industry by developing solutions that exceed the highest air quality standards. Our products, made in the Americas, are engineered to meet the evolving needs of commercial, industrial, and residential applications worldwide.

Our portfolio includes advanced solutions like the Prime9 XT (MERV 9), o ering exceptional particle capture, the ProPocket Nano Ultra (MERV 16A) for demanding environments, the

Leadership in Filtration

ProPocket DC Elite for high-air flow systems, and the Thin Line Ultra Max (MERV 13) to capture fine particulates like bacteria and smoke while maintaining air flow.

We don't just filter air—we set the standard for cleaner, healthier environments with innovations focused on advanced materials, superior manufacturing, and sustainability. Stay ahead with our industry-leading solutions.

Although the filter worked as designed, the air quality in the home was still suboptimal. Why? Infiltration air—dirty, unfiltered outdoor air seeping into the home—was diluting the effectiveness of the system.

THE INFILTRATION PROBLEM

According to a 2002 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study, the average pre-1994 home experiences 1.18 natural air changes per hour (ACH nat). For a 1,500-square-foot home with a basement, that translates to roughly 295 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of unfiltered air entering the home. Even with a highperformance air filter delivering 1,200 CFM of clean air, the infiltration reduces the system’s effective air filter efficiency by 25%. A MERV 16 filter might deliver the equivalent of MERV 11 performance in such conditions, while a MERV 13 filter might only reach MERV 10.

A

GAME-CHANGING

SOLUTION: DEPRESSURIZATION DUCTS

To address this, we began incorporating a simple but effective modification: a depressurization duct. By installing a 6-inch duct with a manual adjustable damper from the outside of the home to the HVAC system’s return air plenum (upstream of the filter), we could filter incoming infiltration air. During setup, we adjusted the damper to equalize the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the home to 0 pascals, ensuring no unfiltered air was seeping in.

When we revisited the home with the boy who had respiratory issues, the improvement was dramatic. The family reported significantly better air quality, and their son’s symptoms eased noticeably. From then on, we offered depressurization ducts with every NovusAer installation, later standardizing on 8-inch ducts for even better results.

REDUCING VISIBLE DUST

Beyond health benefits, depressurization ducts help with another common complaint: visible dust. Much of the dust settling on furniture comes from unfiltered infiltration air. By filtering all incoming air, these ducts reduce the dust load dramatically. While it’s not a flawless solution, it’s one of the most effective approaches we’ve found.

REAL-WORLD RESULTS

Even in challenging environments, like my own home in Salt Lake City, depressurization ducts have proven their worth. Our high mountain valley often suffers from severe air pollution due to temperature inversions, yet my indoor air quality remains pristine. With a furnace running at just 25% continuous fan speed, my air monitors consistently read 0 PM 2.5 particles, regardless of outdoor conditions. Customers with similar setups have reported equally impressive results.

THE TAKEAWAY

Achieving clean indoor air isn’t just about choosing the best filter. It’s about addressing the broader system, including the impact of air infiltration. By combining high-efficiency filtration with a well-designed depressurization duct, homeowners can enjoy truly clean air—free from harmful particulates and visible dust—no matter the environment. If you’re serious about air quality, it’s worth investing in a comprehensive solution that tackles the problem from every angle.

BROKEN BUT UNBREAKABLE: THE REAL GRIT THAT MAKES PEOPLE RISE

Have you ever wondered why some people break through and achieve what they set out to do—while others get stuck, stall, or give up before they even begin?

What separates those who rise from those who retreat? Especially the ones who have faced real adversity—how do they still manage to keep going, building something meaningful despite the pain?

What’s different about them? And more importantly—can that be developed?

Three years ago, I didn’t think I’d make it. And I don’t mean that figuratively—I mean literally. My youngest son passed away, and I nearly flatlined myself the same night, with only 8 seconds to go. One breath away from leaving this world and joining him.

But I didn’t.

And ever since that night, I’ve asked one question: How do we keep going when life breaks us? How do we move through grief, fear, challenge, and setbacks—and still rise?

The answer is GRIT. But not the way most people talk about it. It’s not just about grinding through, pushing harder, or “getting it done.” Real GRIT is multidimensional. It’s not just about action—it’s about adaptability. Not just endurance—but perspective. Grit isn’t running from the storm. It’s standing inside it and shifting the way you see it.

That’s why I created the Global G.R.I.T. System®—because grit isn’t one thing. It’s four distinct, interdependent strengths:

• G — Get It Done: The drive to take action even when it's uncomfortable.

• R — Reframe Thinking: The ability to shift your mindset and see new possibilities, especially in moments of pain.

• I — Impact Others: Using your experiences to lead, influence, and elevate the people around you.

• T — Take Responsibility: Taking full ownership for your next step, your growth, your life.

Cont. on page 20.

Let me break it down even more.

To grow, we go through four internal stages: Comfort Fear Learning Growth.

• To get out of comfort and into motion, we activate the G—Get It Done.

• To move through fear without burning out, we lean into the R—Reframe Thinking

• To get out of the learning zone and put wisdom into motion, we lead with the I—Impact Others.

• And once we hit a new level of growth, the T—Take Responsibility— kicks in, because now that level becomes your new comfort zone.

The cycle doesn’t end—it evolves. Your new growth becomes your new baseline. Your next challenge becomes your next opportunity to choose GRIT—again and again.

And here's the most important part: It doesn’t matter which stage you’re in. What matters is that you’re aware of where you are— so you know which element of GRIT to activate. That’s how transformation happens. That’s how leaders are made. That’s how you become legendary

The main takeaway from losing my son and nearly my life is this: If you fall, you get back up. And you NEVER give up. That’s what

leaders do. They face fear, they look into the light, they never give up, and they practice their new skills from what they learned during failure. Over and over and over.

So take action. Now. We come from a place we didn’t choose, but we can choose where we are going. No matter if you grew up rich or poor, in happy or unhappy circumstances, we do have a choice where we go from there. There is no cavalry coming to save you, you have to rely on yourself first.

Nobody is going to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself first.

We all have the capability to be who we want to be. We just need the tools to learn how to unlock it. You can learn more about how to unlock these tools in my book “Hunt or Be Hunted: How AnyoneCanDevelopGritand Lead LikeaLegend”.

To learn which ‘Grit type’ you are, take the assessment.

Text GRITTYPE to 33777 to gain access.

And always ask yourself…What are you doing today to get you to where you need to be tomorrow?

EXECUTIVE PROFILE

ULPATEK

Ferhat Gürer, Sales Manager at Ulpatek Filtre, has been with the company since 2013. He holds a degree in Mechatronics Engineering and a master's in Engineering Management. In addition to sales management, Ferhat leads marketing initiatives and business development strategies, focusing on international markets. Based in Istanbul, he enjoys traveling and exploring new cultures, having visited 56 countries so far. Ferhat is married and has two children, a daughter and a son.

COMPANY HISTORY

Ulpatek, founded in 2007 by an experienced team with deep roots in cleanroom air conditioning, has become a trusted manufacturer in air filtration, recognized globally for innovation, quality, and reliability. Specializing in Minipleat and HEPA filters, Ulpatek serves diverse markets from basic HVAC systems to advanced cleanroom environments. The company exports to over 80 countries, offering customized filtration solutions and strong private-label partnerships tailored specifically to customer needs.

How did you get your start in the filter industry?

After graduating with a degree in Mechatronics Engineering and completing several internships, I began my professional career at Ulpatek in 2013. Starting in sales during the company’s early years, I took initiative to fill gaps in marketing and business development, eventually leading these areas alongside my sales responsibilities.

How do you motivate your employees?

I motivate my team by building trust, openly sharing both technical and commercial experiences, and creating an environment where everyone's voice is heard. I encourage them by giving autonomy in their roles and providing opportunities for professional and personal growth. I always aim to provide a comfortable workspace, including flexible remote work and occasional team sessions at local cafés, which strengthens our sense of unity and commitment to common goals.

Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it?

Yes, my mentor has been our current General Manager, Ganim Dokuyucu. Since Ulpatek was my first professional experience, I learned a lot from him. Especially his customer-centric approach, relationship-building skills, and sales-closing abilities deeply inspired me. He always encouraged me to identify areas of improvement, supported my initiatives, and guided me in taking action. His openness to new ideas greatly influenced my growth and helped shape my professional mindset.

What's the best piece of advice anyone ever gave you?

The best advice I've received is to focus genuinely on the customer, not just the sale. Understanding the customer's real needs, priorities, and expectations is key. When you provide solutions rather than simply products, you build lasting trust.

That's how long-term success in business happens—by truly placing customers first and deeply understanding their world.

What is the most challenging aspect of running a filter company?

One of the biggest challenges in the filtration industry is the constant emergence of new manufacturers offering low-cost but inefficient and low-quality products. These products create confusion for customers, making it necessary for us to continuously educate them. We invest significant effort in raising awareness about filtration basics and helping customers understand the key features they should look for in a filter. Quality and efficiency are critical, and our role is to ensure customers make informed decisions rather than just focusing on price.

What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces?

One of the biggest challenges in the air filtration industry today is the increasing number of low-cost, low-quality filter manufacturers. These products create confusion in the market, as many customers focus primarily on price without fully understanding the impact of poor filtration on efficiency, energy consumption, and air quality. As a result, educating customers has become a crucial part of our role. We constantly work to raise awareness about filtration fundamentals and help customers make informed decisions based on performance and long-term benefits, rather than just cost.

Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals?

My advice to new professionals is to focus on learning, not just selling. Filtration is more than just selling products—it’s about understanding air quality, energy efficiency, and system

performance. Filtration might seem simple at first, but when you’re eager to learn and dive deeper, it’s vast enough to teach you something new every day. Know what your customers truly need, educate them, and always prioritize quality over short-term gains. The more knowledgeable and reliable you become, the more value you add to the industry.

How has your company benefitted from NAFA membership?

NAFA has always been a valuable resource that we followed from a distance. Until now, our company has built strong partnerships and a solid network in Europe. However, as we expand, we see NAFA as a key platform to share our expertise and establish new collaborations in the US. We also believe there is a lot to learn from this market, and we look forward to gaining insights through NAFA’s support.
