Harmonious Living
Ilearned a new word the other day after stumbling upon a podcast a few months ago. Naturally, the algorithm kept feeding me more content from nuclear physicist Thomas Campbell, who was the guest of the show. Tom’s work focuses heavily on consciousness; not just human consciousness, but consciousness as the fundamental nature of reality itself, including the energy we’re made of and immersed in.
Anyway, the new word I learned was “entropy,” which as described by Wikipedia is “a scientific concept, most commonly associated with states of disorder, randomness or uncertainty.”
For humans, that concept translates into the balance, or lack thereof, we experience in our daily lives. High entropy shows up as reactivity, disconnection from others or ourselves, self-centeredness, poor habits, no clear direction, or a victim mindset that always blames outside forces.
Conversely, lower entropy allows us to self-correct quickly in emotional situations, take ownership of our choices, align our thoughts, feelings and actions, and feel compassion and calm even under stress.
After learning this and doing some self-reflection, I’ve started noticing how easily I can be jarred into negative, high-entropy states. The first time I really caught myself, I had to laugh out loud. Alone in my car, driving through one of the many roundabouts near my home, I was literally screaming at another driver who was completely oblivious to my angry toddler response to their cluelessness (at least based on my interpretation) of what “yield” means in a traffic circle!
Like most, I seek peace and harmony, which is why I love this edition so much. I’ve had my share of high-entropy experiences. Thankfully, I’ve got a few tools in my spiritual and emotional toolbox that help me bounce back to center in just a breath or two, when I make that conscious choice to feel differently.
One of those tools is featured in our News Briefs this month. You can get a taste of it for free from Eleanor Mann and Emma Johnston at The Reconnected with their "I AM" 5-Day Nervous System Reset.
In full disclosure, the link is an affiliate link. But I share it because it works for me, and it might help you too.
I hope this edition supports you in some way and helps you experience more peace and harmony in your life as we all bounce around with loved ones and strangers alike on this wildly diverse planet!
Peace,
with black soy ink.

Stay Strong and Injury-Free This Race Season
AsRhode Island’s race season ramps up, runners and triathletes are logging serious miles, both in training and competing, increasing the likelihood of overuse injuries. To keep these and all other athletes on the move and not sidelined this summer, Restore Physical Therapy, based in Cranston, is providing 50 percent off for their 75-minute evaluations for new patients throughout this month.
Debilitating injuries don’t appear overnight. They often start as small aches—tight hips, heel pain or knee discomfort—that can come from issues in training plans, running form or recovery routines. Ignoring these “small” signs can lead to big setbacks.
Instead of waiting until an ailment manifests itself, it’s helpful to incorporate physical therapy from the start. A proactive evaluation assesses strength, gait mechanics and recovery habits, so any issues can be addressed before they become season-ending problems.
“This is a time-sensitive offer that will make a difference in people’s lives to seek proactive care that could prevent bigger issues later on,” says Dr. Amanda Zarriello, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and owner of Restore Physical Therapy.

Herbal Pathways to Nervous System Health
Renowned
herbalist Jim McDonald will lead a special workshop—Fine Tuning the Nervous System with Nervines, Adaptogens and Tonics—from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 16 and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on August 17 at The Boston School of Herbal Studies, in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Attendees will learn about the energetic attributes of specific herbs along with behaviors that can provide support through times of stress and strain in all of their manifestations; whether it be due to acute trauma, trying to keep up with the unsustainable pace of life or feelings of overwhelm to outbursts to heartache.
Stress is one of the largest contributors to illness, depleting our bodies of the energy needed to maintain health, digest our food, fight off infection and keep us happy. Many of us may feel like we’re swimming upstream or in a constant state of “fight or flight”. Fortunately, there are many herbs that are not only known to offer a calming influence, but which can also act in a nervine tonic/tropho-restorative manner upon the nervous system. McDonald’s journey began in 1994 with a transformative sip of wild-harvested tea. His plant-centered practice blends traditional European folk medicine with 19thcentury Eclectic and Physiomedical vitalism, infused with storytelling, humor and deep reverence for the land. He is a passionate teacher, wildcrafter and medicine maker who shares his knowledge through workshops across North America.

Natural, Non-Surgical Approach to Cervical Dysplasia
Dr.Brenda Bithoney, a naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health at Anasa Personalized Medicine, in Providence, Rhode Island, is pioneering an integrative approach to cervical dysplasia with the introduction of escharotic therapy—a plant-based, non-surgical alternative to the conventional loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). She is currently the first practitioner in the state to offer this specialized treatment.
Escharotic therapy, named after the Greek word eschar—referring to the shedding of tissue—targets abnormal cervical cells often linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). The therapy involves a series of topical applications using herbal compounds, such as bloodroot, applied directly to the cervix to support the natural sloughing of unhealthy cells. Before treatment is recommended, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation, as the therapy may not be appropriate for all types or grades of dysplasia. For eligible candidates, the protocol typically includes 12 in-office sessions over a period of six to 12 weeks, along with vaginal suppositories and internal naturopathic support tailored to optimize immune and cervical health.
Evidence supporting this approach includes a 2014 case study by the National College of Natural Medicine and the Helfgott Research Institute, in Oregon. The study tracked a woman with severe cervical dysplasia that underwent 10 escharotic sessions in combination with oral supplements and vaginal therapies. Her pap smears at both sixmonth and two-year follow-ups showed no remaining signs of abnormality. This method reflects a growing demand for less invasive, holistic options in women’s health care—particularly for individuals looking to avoid surgical intervention when safely possible.

Healthy-Aging Properties of Caffeinated Coffee
In June, a large-scale study by Tufts University sought to determine the health benefits of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee with and without the addition of sugar and saturated fat. The results published in The Journal of Nutrition suggest that drinking a low-to-moderate amount of caffeinated coffee daily lowers the risk of all-cause mortality; however, the benefit drops when an overabundance of sugar and saturated fat are added.
The researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 1999 and 2018 involving more than 46,000 American adults. Individuals that consumed one to three cups every day were about 15 percent less likely to die in the next nine to 11 years compared to those that did not drink coffee at all. This benefit was negated for those that added more than half a teaspoon of sugar, one tablespoon of half-and-half, or three-and-a-half tablespoons of whole milk. Drinking decaffeinated coffee was not associated with healthy aging.
New Defense Against Superbugs
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that antimicrobialresistant infections affect more than 2.8 million Americans annually, resulting in more than 35,000 deaths. These “superbugs” have developed the ability to resist medicines used to eradicate them, including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics.
In 2019, a systematic review proposed fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) as a potential strategy for the decolonization of multidrug-resistant microorganisms (MDRO), as well as for the prevention of recurring MDRO infections. The researchers suggested that the implantation of good bacteria could restore normal gut microbiota, giving patients the ability to fight off resistant infections without need for other medical interventions.
A small, randomized trial in the United Kingdom recently tested the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of FMT delivered in capsule form. Among the subjects with invasive infections, 20 received FMT capsules, while 21 were part of the placebo group. The findings published in the July issue of the Journal of Infection indicated that encapsulated FMT was safe, welltolerated and effective in colonizing the gut with healthy bacteria and eliminating superbugs. This study establishes the groundwork for a larger-scale investigation.

Goldfish Invaders
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is urging the public to refrain from releasing goldfish into local lakes, ponds and streams when they are no longer desired as pets, but instead seek alternative solutions such as returning them to the pet store or contacting a local aquarium or fish rescue organization for assistance.
In the wild, goldfish exhibit invasive characteristics that cause significant harm to local ecosystems. Omnivorous in nature, they thrive in diverse environmental conditions and are capable of rapid growth, exceeding four pounds in weight and a foot in length. At that size, they have no natural predators.
As bottom feeders, goldfish disrupt the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems by stirring up sediment, uprooting plants and muddying the water. Their spawning frequency, which occurs several times a season, can lead to rapid population expansion. Goldfish also harbor parasites and diseases against which native fish possess no immunity.

Waterkeeper Alliance Urges Federal Action on PFAS Contamination
Toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are newly emerging water-polluting contaminants that are invisible and odorless. Also known as “forever chemicals”, PFAS are very slow to break down in the environment. They are biopersistent, bioaccumulative and pose serious health risks. Thousands of PFAS chemicals have been formulated in the last 80 years for use in industrial and household products. Further, PFAScontaminated sludge has found its way into farming and gardening top soil.
A new report, released on June 26 by Waterkeeper Alliance, reveals that PFAS have contaminated 98 percent of tested U.S. waters, with elevated levels found at 95 percent of sampled sites downstream from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and 80 percent downstream from biosolids land application sites. Such findings should lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, regulators and lawmakers to take
urgent action to protect the health of our communities and environment without any further delay.
Kate McPherson, Narragansett Bay Riverkeeper for Save The Bay, participated in this PFAS Phase II study by collecting samples in Rhode Island, upstream and downstream of a wastewater treatment plant situated on the Pawtuxet River, in Cranston. She says, “I was interested in PFAS sampling in the Pawtuxet River because we don’t have a whole lot of publicly available surface water data on PFAS
Shutterstock.com
yet. We weren’t sure if wastewater treatment plants were going to be a big source of PFAS, and at least at the Cranston treatment plant during the month we sampled it doesn’t appear to be so, since there wasn’t a significant difference in upstream and downstream concentrations.”
The total concentration of upstream and downstream PFAS in the river was around 38 parts per trillion (ppt), whereas the RI PFAS surface water “action level” is 70 ppt. Nonetheless, people should avoid ingesting water from this river due to potential bacterial pollution.
The state legislature has passed one law banning PFAS in food packaging and consumer products and another requiring sampling of land-applied biosolids and fertilizers produced from biosolids. These are positive steps; however, such laws are difficult to enforce. More importantly, Waterkeeper Alliance advocates for responsibility at
Wacomka/
a federal level and asks all U.S. citizens to urge their congressional representatives to “Act on PFAs.”
Waterkeeper Alliance provides an actionable link at Waterkeeper.quorum. us/campaign/131950. By contacting congressional representatives, citizens can help ensure that PFAS are regulated as a class, polluters are held accountable and meaningful protections are put in place for clean water, public health and future generations. The time to act is now—before more damage is done.
For more information, visit Waterkeeper.org.
Actions The EPA Must Take to Mitigate The Risks Posed by PFAs:
• Hold industrial source polluters accountable for the PFAS contamination they send downstream
• Establish and enforce federal standards for PFAS in drinking water and surface water discharges under the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act
• Prohibit the land application of PFAS-contaminated biosolids
• Require class-based regulation of PFAS compounds to address the full chemical family, prevent harmful substitutions and streamline monitoring, treatment and enforcement efforts
• Prioritize funding for PFAS monitoring and the deployment of treatment technologies to protect all communities, especially those disproportionately impacted by “forever chemicals” and other forms of pollution.
Communities deserve protection from this growing contamination crisis, especially those already overburdened by pollution. Our water shouldn’t be a chemical dumping ground.
Mindful Workouts
Introducing Mental Wellness Modalities at the Gym
by Jordan Peschek, RN-BSN
Mental wellness is no longer considered a separate pillar of health; it is becoming deeply integrated into physical fitness routines across the country. As the discourse surrounding emotional and psychological well-being becomes more open and less stigmatized, there is a shift in how people approach exercise. Not only is fitness focused on building muscle and burning calories, but increasingly it is about fostering resilience, restoring balance and supporting the mind as well as the body.
This integration of mental wellness emphasizes practices such as breathwork, guided meditation, intentional recovery
and nervous system regulation as core components of a comprehensive fitness regimen. For health-conscious individuals seeking vitality and longevity, this is a natural evolution of holistic living.
“The physical body reflects what is mindfully and energetically present,” shares Dawn Coleman, a certified personal trainer and life transformation coach based in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. “Honoring the body’s physical wellbeing requires that we consider energetic pathways that allow the nurturing of the soul and mind, which, in turn, promotes physical fitness.”
Mind-Body Integration
Today’s approach goes beyond the endorphin rush of a workout. Wellness buffs are looking for fitness environments and tools that help calm the mind, process emotions and foster inner strength. Gyms and studios are responding by incorporating stress-relieving modalities into their offerings. It is not uncommon to find yoga classes ending with a 10-minute guided meditation or strength sessions that begin with focused breathwork. Even high-performance athletes are embracing these new tools, recognizing that mental clarity and nervous system regulation enhance both performance and recovery.
• Breathwork: According to Coleman, conscious breathing exercises help regulate the nervous system and lower cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. A 2023 meta-analysis published in the journal Nature found that breathwork may be effective for improving stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Techniques like box breathing, diaphragmatic breathing or alternate nostril breathing can be layered into warm-ups, cool-downs or standalone sessions.
• Meditation and Visualization: Whether it’s a guided meditation before sleep or a visualization practice to prepare for a race, meditation trains the brain for focus, reduces anxiety and enhances emotional resilience. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology affirms that tailored visualization improves athletic performance and establishes the mental toughness needed to achieve both longterm and short-term goals.
FatCamera from Getty Images Signature/CanvaPro
• Recovery Rituals: Recuperation is a vital part of training. Therapies involving infrared saunas, float tanks, cryotherapy and contrast baths support muscle repair while simultaneously calming the nervous system and promoting mental relaxation. A 2023 randomized crossover study of 20 basketball players, published in Biology of Sport, reported improvements in muscle recovery and reduced soreness when exercise was followed by an infrared sauna session. A peer-reviewed article in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise reported that exercisers that followed high-intensity interval training with a one-hour floatation session experienced enhanced recovery from sore muscles and improved performance readiness.
• Tai Chi and Qigong: These mindful movement disciplines emphasize intention, awareness and breath, creating space for physical vitality and mental clarity.
Reimagining the Gym
The design of fitness spaces is evolving toward environments that promote wholeness and healing. Lighting and
Yan Krukau from Pexels/CanvaPro
music are intentionally curated to create inviting atmospheres, while recovery lounges are incorporated for meditation or breathwork practices. This evolution has been particularly meaningful for women experiencing burnout, hormonal fluctuations or chronic stress.
Rather than pushing through fatigue or anxiety, individuals are adopting restorative practices that align with their physical needs. Many gyms, as well as yoga and Pilates studios, are offering supplemental therapies to support mental and physical fitness objectives. Sauna,
red light and cold plunge therapies have become more accessible than ever.
Enduring Wellness
Mental wellness integration is more than a trend; it is a redefinition of what it means to be fit, challenging the old “no pain, no gain” model and replacing it with a deeper, more sustainable approach to health. This shift is being embraced not only because it feels good in the moment, but also because it supports long-term well-being. People are learning to treat their minds with the same care and intention as their muscles. By doing so, they are redefining strength, not as something visible, but as something profoundly felt—steady breathing, calm thoughts, inner peace. In a fast-paced world that often demands more and more, mental wellness integration offers a path toward greater equilibrium, presence and joy throughout the journey.

The Art of Enough Cultivating Harmony in the Home and Life
by Katy Annulli
In today’s world, it’s easy to believe that harmony comes from adding more—more time, more space and more things to manage the things we already have. Yet true harmony often begins with less. By appreciating and using what is already in place, and by tuning into how spaces make people feel, homes can shift from overwhelming to supportive, creating a ripple effect of calm in daily life.
When people let go of excess and focus on what truly serves them, they are able to create homes that nurture their well-being instead of draining it. Harmony isn’t about having a Pinterestperfect house. It’s about designing a space that feels aligned with the life someone wants to live.
The Weight of “Too Much”
Excess items often weigh on more than just shelves and closets— they weigh on the mind. Studies show that clutter in the home increases cortisol levels, contributing to stress and overwhelm. For many, this physical and mental clutter can make even the simplest routines feel heavy.
I worked with a family of four where toys, mail and household items seemed to multiply overnight. They weren’t lazy or disorganized people—they were overwhelmed by trying to keep up. Once we cleared unnecessary items and created simple systems, they began to breathe easier and even said their mornings felt lighter.
This sense of lightness is the first step toward harmony. It comes from redefining what is “enough” and releasing the rest.

Tuning Into the Energy of Space
Beyond the physical weight of clutter lies the emotional energy of a home. Spaces hold power to inspire calm or spark chaos, depending on how they are arranged and cared for.
Harmony grows in environments that support well-being. Open windows that invite fresh air, natural light streaming across a kitchen table and clear surfaces that are free of distraction all nurture a sense of peace. Even small changes—like moving a chair to create better flow in a room—can make a significant impact.
Think about how a favorite room feels. Chances are it’s not the most decorated space, but one where the layout and objects align with what matters most.
Simple Shifts Toward Harmony
Creating a harmonious home doesn’t require a full renovation or costly upgrades. Small, intentional steps can often make the biggest difference:
• Start with one area. Clear surfaces in a high-traffic zone, such as a kitchen counter or entryway, to establish visual calm.
• Invite nature in. Add plants, open curtains to maximize natural light or use soft textures like cotton or wool for warmth.
• Create breathing room. Allow space between furniture and clear walkways to improve flow and energy.
• Establish a quiet corner. Even in a small home, designate a spot for reflection, reading or simply pausing.
As these shifts take hold, many people notice not only their homes changing, but also their inner state.
Cultivating Harmony From Within
Harmony in the home mirrors harmony in life. When people begin to simplify their spaces and honor what is already there, they often discover that enough was within reach all along.
It’s not about striving for perfection. It’s about creating environments that support people in showing up as their best selves—spaces where they can rest, recharge and feel at peace.
Harmonious living begins one small step at a time. A cleared counter, an open
window a moment of gratitude for what is already present—all are powerful invitations for balance to take root.

A Whole-Body Approach to Pelvic Wellness
Pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) has seen a surge in awareness and demand over the past few years, and Rhode Island Pelvic Wellness (RIPW), located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, is at the forefront of this important movement. While many still associate pelvic floor therapy solely with postpartum recovery, the reality is that it offers life-changing benefits for people of all ages and genders.
PFPT addresses dysfunction in the muscles at the base of the pelvis which are responsible for supporting the bladder, bowel and reproductive organs, and play key roles in posture, stability and sexual function. When these muscles are weak, tight or out of sync, dysfunction can arise.
RIPW offers specialized care for individuals experiencing issues that are often overlooked or misunderstood, including:
• Urinary dysfunction such as urgency, frequency, incontinence, hesitancy and nocturia
• Bowel symptoms like constipation, straining and incontinence
• Pelvic pain, including pressure, aching or discomfort
• Tailbone pain, often triggered by sitting, a past injury or childbirth trauma
• Sexual dysfunction, including pain with intimacy, erectile dysfunction or reduced sensation
• Pelvic organ prolapse, common during menopause or after childbirth
• Post-surgical pelvic rehabilitation, including recovery after prostate cancer treatment, a hysterectomy or other pelvic surgeries
• Chronic low back, abdominal wall or hip pain that may be linked to underlying pelvic floor issues
Care Across the Lifespan
RIPW provides expert care at every stage of life. During pregnancy, pelvic floor therapy can help maintain a pain-free, active lifestyle, reduce the risk of tearing during delivery, and lay the groundwork for easier postpartum recovery. In the postpartum phase, PFPT supports healing, restores bladder and bowel control, and helps reestablish strength.
During menopause, hormonal changes can weaken the pelvic floor and contribute to symptoms like prolapse or pain with intimacy. PFPT can help manage these changes and improve overall pelvic support and function.
PFPT is not just for women. RIPW also treats men that experience pelvic floor dysfunction, especially after prostate surgery or due to chronic pelvic pain syndromes.
A Specialized, Whole-Body Approach
RIPW, co-owned by Emily Santello and Olivia Crudele, provides personalized, one-on-one care in a supportive environment. Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual, combining manual therapy, targeted exercises, movement retraining and education to address the root cause of symptoms— not just manage them.
As public awareness grows, more individuals are seeking help for symptoms that were once dismissed as “normal” parts of aging, childbirth or recovery. Sound Therapy A Somatic Perspective
by Moira Lo Bianco
The growing recognition of sound therapy in the healing arts is a powerful testament to the evolving landscape of holistic medicine. The rising interest in the therapeutic benefits of sound, along with the revival of ancient healing practices, showcases a transformative movement that promises to enhance well-being and foster deeper connections with ourselves and the world around us.
At the same time, it’s important to approach sound therapy with mindful awareness, especially given the lack of consistent scientific and cultural context in many popular discussions. The commercialization of sound healing can sometimes blur understanding, making it essential to distinguish genuine knowledge, rooted in dedicated study and experience, from marketing hype. Simply owning a singing bowl doesn’t make one a sound “healer”, and honoring this distinction helps preserve the integrity of the practice.
While sound baths offer communal experiences of relaxation within ambient settings, somatic sound therapy takes a more individualized approach. Rooted in the Greek word soma, meaning body, somatic practices emphasize embodied awareness and the felt sense. In this context, sound is used as a neurophysiological stimulus, engaging the body’s sensory pathways to support nervous system regulation and foster healing from within.
The Somatic Foundation of Sound
The body itself acts as a natural soundboard, allowing vibrations to resonate through its water-rich tissues, bones and skin. Since
more than 60 percent of the human body is composed of water, sound waves travel deeply and widely, creating a multisensory experience that combines auditory and tactile perception. This resonance supports interoceptive awareness (the ability to sense internal bodily states) which is often diminished in those experiencing chronic stress or trauma, according to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology
Our bodies are naturally designed to receive and respond to sound. Vibrational energy moves through air, bones and water, activating both auditory and tactile pathways. The vagus nerve, linking the brainstem to key internal organs, is central to autonomic regulation. Stimulating it can increase parasympathetic activity, lift mood, reduce inflammation and support trauma recovery, according to Respiratory Physiology Practices such as humming, toning and breath-synchronized sound therapy raise vagal tone and nitric oxide release, helping the body better regulate stress responses.
Instruments like tuning forks and Himalayan singing bowls can be applied directly to the body to stimulate energetic points. Through resonance, these tools entrain subtle vibrations that deepen interoceptive awareness and calm sympathetic nervous system arousal, as reported in Southern Medical Journal.
Sound also shapes cortical activity in meaningful ways. Brainwave patterns such as delta (0.5 to 4 Hz), theta (4 to 8 Hz) and alpha (8 to 12 Hz) are associated with deep sleep, meditation and calm alertness. Acoustic stimuli, such as binaural beats (an auditory illusion created when the brain processes two slightly different tones presented separately to each ear), can synchronize these brainwave states through a process known as brainwave entrainment. Research published in Frontiers in Psychiatry suggests such techniques may reduce anxiety, enhance memory consolidation and support cognitive function.
Binaural beats can be especially effective in fostering theta and alpha brainwave states, encouraging emotional integration, sharpening attention and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
Sound and Somatic Healing
Chronic stress and trauma often become stored within the body, held in tissues, postures and subconscious patterns. Sound-based therapeutic practices offer a gentle, nonverbal pathway to access, release and help discharge this excess energy. Evidence-Based Complementary Alternative Medicine reported that even brief sound therapy sessions, such as those lasting 30 minutes, have been shown to significantly reduce self-reported feelings of tension, anxiety and pain.
When combined with breathwork and mindful body awareness, sound practices become especially powerful in activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Diaphragmatic breathing accompanied by tonal vibrations of singing bowls has been found to enhance heart rate variability, a key marker of autonomic balance, as reported in JMIR Mental Health.
Mindfulness meditation can nurture both physical and mental well-being, as well as cognitive function. By gently focusing attention on the surrounding sounds and the rhythm of one’s breath, individuals cultivate present-moment
awareness and a nonjudgmental observation. These are essential qualities of a mindfulness practice. According to an article in Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, mindfulness supports stress reduction, improves cognitive performance and fosters emotional regulation.
A Caution on Frequencies
While marketing often portrays sound therapy instruments as “magic batons”, it’s important to note that scientific research presents a more nuanced picture. Studies suggest that the resonance frequencies of our internal organs and body parts can vary depending on direction, position and individual differences, as noted in European Journal of Applied Physiology and Hearing Research.
Because consistent scientific data is still emerging, it remains difficult to definitively link specific healing properties to particular frequencies and their effects can vary greatly from person to person. Outcomes are influenced by individual needs, sensitivities and context. This highlights the value of personalized and client-centered approaches in sound therapy.
Embodying the Future of Healing with Sound
Sound therapy invites a gentle somatic pathway to heal while honoring both ancient wisdom and contemporary science. At its heart, this practice is about creating a safe and “attuned” space where vibration, sound awareness and embodied presence come together to support nervous system regulation and emotional well-being.
Rather than depending solely on practitioner-led formats like sound baths or fixed frequencies, somatic sound therapy expands the range of possibilities. It offers a personalized and tailored experience that honors each individual’s unique relationship with sound and their body. Healing arises not from the instruments themselves, but from the mindful and compassionate way sound is offered and integrated into somatic healing modalities.
In this way, sound therapy becomes a deeply personal practice that nurtures reconnection, regulation and a sense of wholeness from within.
As sound therapy keeps growing and evolving, recent studies are opening up exciting new doors. We’re learning more
about how each person’s experience with sound can support healing, and finding thoughtful ways to blend sound with other mind-body practices. With proper skills and training, sound practitioners can offer deeply informed and meaningful experiences that promote whole-person wellness and nervous system regulation, unlocking sound therapy’s full potential toward holistic healing and lasting transformation.

Where Healing Meets Movement
For those seeking a deeper connection between body, mind and spirit, TranscenDance offers a path to transformation—through movement. More than just a dance class, it is a form of conscious movement therapy that blends the mindfulness of yoga with the liberation of free-form dance. TranscenDance is designed to help participants release stress, heal from unconscious pain and reconnect with themselves in a joyful, empowering way.
“TranscenDance is an invitation to release what you’ve outgrown—and step into the freedom you deserve,” says Benjamin Blackett, a certified TranscenDance facilitator and founder of A Creative Healing Place, in West Warwick, Rhode Island. “When you dance, you dissolve old stories and make space for something new.”
Developed by Jennifer Joy Jiménez, TranscenDance draws from spiritual psychology, somatics, personal development and energy healing. A typical class begins with breathwork, stretching and guided visualization, gradually evolving into expressive, self-directed, fun, free-flowing movement set to uplifting music. Unlike traditional dance or fitness programs, TranscenDance does not require choreography or prior experience. The focus is on embodiment, presence and freedom of expression.
“Your body is a compass, guiding you toward what feels true, alive, and whole,” explains Blackett. “TranscenDance helps you listen—beyond the mind, beyond the doubt—so you can come home to yourself.”
The practice is inclusive and adaptable. All ages, fitness levels and mobility ranges are welcome, including those recovering from injuries or navigating disabilities. Whether lying in bed, using a wheelchair or dancing on both feet, participants are invited to move in whatever way feels safe and intuitive. There are no right steps, only authentic movement inspired by the music and one’s inner rhythm.
TranscenDance classes are currently offered both in-person and virtually, making the modality accessible to individuals across the globe. With its focus on emotional release, embodied self-discovery and community support, TranscenDance is resonating with a growing number of people that are looking for something beyond the studio mirror or the fitness tracker. It is also a great modality to add to any spiritual retreat.
“Let your movement be your medicine,” Blackett adds. “And let it bring you home to yourself.”

Harmony Begins on Your Plate
by Alora Frederick, RDN, LDN
In today’s fast-paced world, living in harmony with our bodies can feel elusive. We search for balance in yoga studios, meditation apps or weekend getaways—but often overlook one of the most foundational sources of harmony: the food on our plates. Nutrition is not just fuel; it is the thread that connects our physical health, mental clarity and emotional wellbeing. When we eat with awareness and care, we create more harmony and balance in day-to-day life.
In place of perfection, aim for presence and consistency. Here are a few guiding principles for finding balance. Eat whole, seasonal foods: Nature offers what we need at the
right time. Fresh fruits in summer, grounding root vegetables in winter— these rhythms support our bodies’ natural cycles. Joining a community supported agriculture program (CSA) is a great way to ensure fresh, seasonal and delicious produce. Local and seasonal produce is nutrient dense and delicious in taste. It makes getting in our veggies and greens a bit easier.
PRACTICE MINDFUL EATING: Slowing down to savor meals allows us to truly taste, digest and appreciate our food. It helps us notice when we’re full which reduces emotional or distracted eating. It’s also critical for proper digestion. Oftentimes, the main culprit for bloating is due to fast-paced eating.

PLAN AHEAD: Whether it’s spending the day at the beach, going about our regular work day or having an unstructured summer weekend, think ahead when it comes to meals and food. This greatly reduces decision fatigue and impulsive eating. Being prepared/having the awareness of the last time we ate means we are also inherently tracking blood sugar stability. Blood sugar stability—preventing blood sugar from dipping too low or spiking too high—is the secret sauce for energy stability, a stable mood and overall wellness in the body.
BALANCE THE PLATE:
A nourishing meal includes healthy fats, quality protein, fiber-rich produce and whole food starchy carbohydrates. This variety keeps our blood sugar stable and energy steady throughout the day. Typically, what most individuals are missing are sufficient protein and fiber levels at a meal. Pay attention to which aspect might be missing. Though individual needs vary, a good place to aim is for about 30 grams of protein per meal and 10 grams of fiber per meal.
LISTEN TO THE BODY:
Everybody is different. Respect hunger cues, note how different foods make us feel and choose what genuinely nourishes us—not just what’s trendy or works for someone else.
These small, intentional choices accumulate over time, supporting not just a healthier body, but a more centered and peaceful way of living. Harmonious living begins with honoring ourselves—one nourishing choice at a time. Nutrition is a daily opportunity to align our body with our intentions, and our health with our values. When we eat with care, we don’t just feed our bodies—we nurture our whole selves.

The Authentic Lifestyle
Learning To Realign With Our True Selves
by Carrie Jackson
Harmony in our daily routine provides a sustainable and fulfilling rhythm. A life in balance accommodates ambition and rest, effort and ease, honoring our individual energy and purpose. Instead of pursuing future goals and equating success with monetary gain or accomplishments, we can learn to appreciate the present moment and align our choices with personal values. By shifting from a rigid, externally oriented idea of success to a more holistic, harmoniously driven
approach, we can experience greater joy, purpose and authenticity.
Connecting to the Web of Life
In 2022, Yoli Maya Yeh, a yoga teacher, shiatsu therapist and educator whose work revolves around Indigenous preservation, healing arts and social justice, embarked on an adventure of global nomadism and worldschooling her now 13-yearold child. Their journeys have taken
them to many countries, including Morocco, Italy, Malta and Senegal. Yeh asserts that her lifestyle was not the result of a single decision but rather the culmination of focus, willpower and the strength of those that have walked before her.
“While entrepreneurship flows through my veins, without a clear vision, a sense of purpose and a deep well of confidence, I would not be able to be this assertive and daring in my approach to how I want to fulfill my dreams. I could decide to
“Harmonious living begins with aligning our work, relationships, daily activities and choices with our core values and truest desires. When life is guided by these intentions, we can reconnect with ourselves and discover what most nourishes us in body, mind and spirit. Practices such as energy healing, conscious breathing, meditation, prayer, journaling, movement and time in nature can help ground and center us, and calm the nervous system for more aligned choices. Making space for rest, joy and self-care is therefore not a luxury, but essential to our well-being and lasting happiness.”

play small and feel contracted in my body, but that was not the intuitive guidance I have come to trust,” Yeh explains. “My vision is a life where I can be in spaces of belonging, collaborating and problem solving, dreaming and world-building our collective liberated future. In the present moment, I explore my inborn gifts and hone them to be of maximum service.”
She maintains that a path of development cannot be solely cerebral, sharing, “A traveling lifestyle provides me with a high level of changefulness in which I can cultivate growth and adaptation through constant new experiences that challenge me to navigate unknowns. We must bring the transformative process into the body through active restoration tools and meaningful engagement with self.”
Harmony and resistance are felt in the body, and tapping into those signals enables us to deeply connect with our true selves. As Yeh puts it, “Perpetual analysis in the mind disconnects us from the experience of resonance, thus distancing us from actual alignment. A daily centering practice that draws on a collage of breathwork, mantra and meditative techniques allows us to hone our connection to the sensations in the body.”
As a respite from the demands of modern society, Yeh turns to yoga nidra, a yogic sleep meditation originating in South Asia, as well as other Indigenous wisdom traditions. “Living in the modern era presents us with contradictory factors,” she says. “We have more automation and digital support, while at the same time, we are cut off from our ancestral rejuvenation practices such as sacred dreaming, ritual and community celebration.”
Another valuable practice is rematriation, or “returning to the Sacred Mother”, which emphasizes
Harmony as a Healing Practice
by Dawn McLaughlin, Founder of Intuitive Hearts
In a world driven by urgency, performance and constant stimulation, harmony can feel like a distant ideal. Yet for some, it is not only attainable—it is essential. Harmony, at its core, is about living in alignment. When thoughts, emotions, energy and actions flow in the same direction, a deep sense of inner peace becomes possible. It’s not perfection, but a dynamic state of balance—a return to center again and again.
Harmony is a connection to purpose and inner truth. It’s the ability to move through life in tune with the body’s wisdom and the spirit’s subtle signals, especially amid stress or change. Daily grounding rituals, communion with nature and honoring energetic cycles can help maintain this equilibrium. Breathwork, journaling, reiki and sound therapy offer gentle, effective ways to recalibrate when the noise of life takes over. Simple practices— such as mindful breathing, walking barefoot or setting energetic boundaries—can offer immediate relief and lay the foundation for long-term change.
Families and communities can cultivate greater connection through shared rituals, open communication and intentional presence. Cultural norms that glorify hustle and disconnection can be rewritten by prioritizing rest, emotional awareness and authentic connection. True health is not simply the absence of disease; it is the presence of balance and vitality. Ultimately, harmony is not a fixed destination, but a relationship—an ongoing choice to pause, listen and realign with compassion. It is in this steady return to rhythm that real healing begins.
Listening to the Body as a Path to Wholeness
by Dee Davidson, FDN-P, Owner of Confidently Love Yourself
Harmonious
living begins with alignment—mind, body and spirit functioning as an integrated whole. It involves tuning into the body’s natural design and supporting it through intentional choices that foster balance and vitality. Daily rituals such as prayer, breathwork and nourishing meals create structure and clarity, even amid stress or change.
When life feels off center, practices like vagus nerve activation, journaling, movement and time in nature help restore equilibrium. These tools serve as a recalibration, allowing the nervous system to settle and the mind to refocus. Simple acts of grounding offer space to release tension and reconnect with purpose.
Many signs of disharmony present physically, including afternoon energy crashes, hormonal imbalances, digestive discomfort and anxiety. Emotional and spiritual indicators often include disconnection, overwhelm and a diminished sense of purpose. In these moments, consistency and simplicity are key—hydration with minerals, protein-rich meals, breathwork and clear boundaries all support daily balance.
Functional lab testing plays a central role in identifying hidden stressors such as inflammation, toxicity or hormonal disruption. Understanding these imbalances allows for targeted support that moves beyond symptom management. Focusing on circadian rhythm, menstrual cycles and body awareness also helps with reconnecting to our natural rhythms.
True healing requires attention to the mind-body connection. When the signals are met with curiosity and compassion, healing begins. Harmony is not an end point, but a relationship to be nurtured through awareness, trust and daily care.
the restoration of Indigenous knowledge and connection. “In this practice, we lay our tired bones down on the earth to rest and revive the ancestral wisdom that lives within. Like so many meditative and trance practices, one explores liminal states of consciousness where the mind expands well beyond the confines of the awake, thinking mind and amplifies creativity and a sense of freedom,” Yeh explains. “To experience fulfillment in life, we need a recipe that combines resonance of expansion and a sense of belonging. Success is the embodied expression of this connection to self and collective at the same time.”

Taking an Energy Inventory
In a world that can be overwhelmingly stimulating, taking a moment to focus on mindfulness helps us reset and refocus. “Your body is your temple, and your intuition is your oracle,” says dharma coach Sahara Rose Ketabi. She recommends meditation, intuitive journaling and embodied movement as catalysts for connecting to our inner guidance and discovering life’s purpose.
• Meditation enhances listening skills, emotional awareness and overall human well-being. Turn off all distractions and notice any thoughts that arise.
• Journaling transforms intangible thoughts into visible reflections. Take five minutes every day to jot down observations, feelings and sensations.
• Embodied movement releases trapped tension, stress and trauma within the body. Start each day with a fluid, sensual and grounding movement session to foster greater joy, creativity, bliss, pleasure and peace.
personal reflections are derived from years of self-inquiry and meditation practice, and her writing emphasizes emotional intelligence and self-awareness as keys to meaningful success.
She notes that the conventional standard of success varies depending on an individual’s upbringing, network and environment. “There are ways in which society measures and corroborates a concept of success, and many people feel beholden to this definition. But this can become more defeating than motivating, as the idea of success is often divorced from the essence of what it should actually mean,” she says. “Success is effectiveness, but the question becomes: Effectiveness at what? Fulfillment is when we’re effective at something meaningful. It’s an internal gauge, rather than an external measure. Fulfillment is when we feel deep peace and inner satisfaction, regardless of how others may perceive our endeavors or pursuits.”
Shifting the focus away from the outcome, and more on our journey, is a practice that strengthens within the interplay of momentum and inertia. Wiest states, “The more we acknowledge and feel good about the progress we’re making, the more inclined we feel to make more of it. Often, we use the inverse on ourselves: We try to focus on the ways in which we’re falling behind (or imagine that we are) so as to motivate ourselves to move forward. This usually just compounds the mindset that we are incapable, and it’s not worth the effort. The best way to become more of anything is first to find evidence of the ways in which you already are that thing.”
Wiest recommends striking a balance between ambition and rest by fine-tuning intuition and strengthening the ability to respond effectively. “There’s no right way to divide up your time, and everyone’s needs differ,” she points out. “Rather than waiting until you’re at the point of depletion to think about taking care of yourself, sit honestly with the
Restoring Balance Through the Body, the Breath and the Gut
by Jessica Liggero, HHP, FDN-P, Owner of Rebalance Your Routine
When feeling out of alignment, physical movement can be a powerful reset. Boxing, in particular, integrates breath, rhythm and coordination into a full-body experience that channels scattered or negative energy into clarity, strength and focus. The physical intensity and creative flow offer release and renewal, grounding both mind and body.
In clinical practice, gut symptoms often point to deeper imbalances across emotional and energetic systems. Clients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), for instance, frequently report bloating, constipation, food sensitivities or chronic digestive discomfort. These issues often stem not just from dysfunction in the gut, but from unresolved stress and nervous system dysregulation. While dietary changes, supplements and lifestyle modifications can help, true healing requires a more holistic rebalancing.
Functional lab testing provides a detailed map of gut health, hormone levels, nutritional deficiencies and toxic load. These insights support targeted protocols to reduce inflammation, support detoxification, and regulate nervous system function. But science alone doesn’t heal— awareness, emotional inquiry and intention are equally important. Exploring the root causes of dysfunction— such as trauma or internalized stress—often reveals the missing link in chronic conditions.
To support ongoing harmony, daily rituals are key. Movement, breathwork, time away from screens and the elimination of alcohol all play a role in restoring balance. Explore joyful hobbies, honor emotional needs and build simple rhythms around nourishment and rest. Even five mindful minutes a day can shift the nervous system toward healing.
At its core, harmony means living in alignment with the body, mind and spirit. Without acknowledging the emotional or energetic roots of dis-ease, symptoms may persist despite the best interventions. By listening inward, cultivating stillness and approaching healing with compassion, it’s possible to reclaim vitality from the inside out.
“Harmonious living, to me, is about being in alignment with our inner world and the world around us—honoring the body, mind and spirit through conscious, compassionate choices. In both my personal life and homeopathy practice, I draw on simple daily rituals, mindfulness and natural remedies to restore balance. Many clients come with physical symptoms rooted in emotional or spiritual disconnection, and true healing begins when we address the whole person. Through homeopathy, flower essences, breathwork and gentle lifestyle shifts, I help individuals reconnect with their innate healing intelligence and natural cycles. Health, ultimately, is not just the absence of illness, but also the presence of ease, clarity and wholeness, and it’s like a byproduct of that harmony of this all.”
question of where you’d like your bandwidth to expand and how your body and mind signal that it’s time to decompress. In the same way that you have to rest a muscle after exercising it for it to strengthen, repair and grow, the rest of the body works similarly. It’s part of the process, not antithetical to it.”
Reflective practices such as meditation and journaling can enable us to be more mindful and make decisions that align with our values, instead of acting impulsively. Wiest suggests looking at life from the perspective of our 90-year-old self and considering what we would have done differently. “Mindfulness is a way of both stilling the waters of the mind and calming the inner chaos, while at the same time, giving us the chance to pause between having a thought and a feeling and then immediately responding to it,” she says. “It’s that gap of time where we get to consciously decide how we will react that ultimately creates our personal freedom.”

to feel like a divine dance—yes, with challenges, but also with deep meaning. It’s not about being the best at something; it’s about being you, fully and unapologetically.”
Ketabi contends that the pursuit of success alone does not yield happiness; it is happiness that brings true success. “Success isn’t just about ticking boxes or climbing ladders. It’s about alignment,” she clarifies. “We can shift this mindset by tuning into our bodies, emotions and passions, asking, ‘Does this feel expansive? Does this nourish my soul?’ When your success is in service of your dharma, it feels sustainable, fulfilling and soul-led.”
Ketabi incorporates Ayurvedic wisdom into her teachings to help people tune into their own energy. “Ayurveda is the science of life, and your dharma is the reason you’re alive. They’re inherently connected. By understanding your dosha— vata, pitta or kapha you understand your strengths, challenges and soul gifts,” she explains. “It’s not just about food or herbs; it’s about rhythm. If you’re a fiery pitta trying to force your purpose, you may burn out. A dreamy vata may need structure to bring ideas through. Ayurveda teaches you how to work with your energy, not against it, so your dharma can blossom naturally.”
Living as your most authentic self ultimately has a butterfly effect for making positive changes in the world. “When one person lives in their dharma, it shifts the field for everyone around them. It creates a ripple of remembrance,” says Ketabi. “I believe that your dharma is not just about you, but it’s about the impact you create through being you. It is not selfish to follow your joy; it’s necessary. When you do what you love, you become magnetic. You inspire others to stop settling, to heal and to rise. You become the permission slip they didn’t know they needed. Living your dharma is the highest form of spiritual activism.”

Aligning Health and Harmony in Everyday Life
by Tina Egbuiwe, FNP, Owner of Unlock Wellness Center
Harmony happens when a person’s actions, emotions and values are aligned. It means living in a way that supports both the body and mind—not just meeting outside expectations, but responding to what the body truly needs. Harmony is not something that appears on its own. It is built through small, consistent choices that support balance and well-being.
Daily routines are one of the best ways to create this balance. Morning practices like stretching, prayer, journaling or spending time outside help set a calm and focused tone for the day. When life becomes stressful, returning to the basics like eating healthy meals, moving gently and having moments of quiet can help reset the body and mind. Evenings are also important. Slowing down before bed allows time for emotional release and helps the body prepare for restful sleep.
When the body is out of balance, it often sends early warning signs. These can include tiredness that doesn’t go away, sudden weight gain, trouble sleeping or constant bloating and discomfort. Emotionally, it might show up as mood swings, frustration or feeling disconnected. Spiritually, a person might feel like they’ve lost their joy or sense of purpose. These are not random problems; they are signals the body uses to ask for help.
The good news is that small steps can make a big difference. Practices like hot-and-cool showers, deep breathing and quiet check-ins (hand to chest and repetitive, soothing words) can calm the nervous system and help the body feel more in control.
Functional medicine offers tools to understand these issues more deeply. It looks at how all body systems work together. Tests for hormones and stress, along with tracking patterns in sleep, energy and mood, can reveal the root causes of what a person is feeling. Many find that their symptoms are linked to real, manageable imbalances.
True healing happens when people stop ignoring their bodies and start listening. In a fast-paced world that rewards overworking, choosing rest, awareness and self-care is powerful. Harmony isn’t about being perfect; it’s about building a healthy, ongoing relationship with the body.

Understanding Cat Supplements
Tips for Safe and Fruitful Nutritional Support
by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN
Cats are often seen as low-maintenance companions, but they may still need supplements to support their health and well-being. The feline supplement market is one of the fastest-growing segments in pet health, with an expected annual growth rate of 8.7 percent through 2029. With so many available options, choosing the right supplements requires careful consideration.
Changing Interests of Pet Owners
Melissa Sherman, a holistic pet health coach and nutritionist, notes that the increasing interest in feline supplements stems from two primary reasons: a shift toward integrative wellness and a heightened emphasis on the unique needs of cats. “People are looking beyond conventional care and asking what more they can do to help their cats thrive, not just survive,” she explains.
A recent survey of pet parents conducted by market research publisher Packaged Facts reported that 76 percent of dog and cat
owners were interested in finding health and wellness products for their pets. Nearly half of the respondents said that they were paying closer attention to their pets’ health in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the number of U.S. households with at least one cat grew from 25 percent in 2016 to 29 percent in 2022. As more families welcome cats into
their homes, interest in long-term feline wellness continues to rise. An aging pet population and the growing availability of veterinarian-formulated supplements further contribute to this rising trend.
Foundational Supplements
To promote general feline wellness, Sherman’s top supplement recommendations fall into the following three categories:
1. Immune Support: Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, turkey tail and shiitake are rich in beta-glucans, which help modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.
2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Marinebased sources such as anchovy or krill are preferable. “Cats are obligate carnivores,” Sherman explains. “It’s essential they receive bioavailable, animal-based omega-3s rather than plant-based sources, which are harder for them to convert.” These nutrients contribute to skin health, joint function, cardiovascular well-being and cognitive performance, making them indispensable for cats of all ages.
3. Emotional Wellness Support: “Cats are deeply sensitive creatures, and their emotional state directly affects their physical health,” says Sherman. “Supplements that support the nervous system, including certain adaptogens or vibrational remedies like flower essences, can be incredibly helpful, especially for cats dealing with anxiety, transitions or trauma.”

Targeted Support
Beyond the foundational supplements, others can be added on a case-by-case basis as specific needs arise. Sherman recommends a comprehensive assessment of the animal’s diet, lifestyle, health history and symptoms, noting, “I evaluate food quality and variety, energy levels, digestion, coat condition and behavior. If the cat thrives on a balanced, species-appropriate diet with no signs of imbalance, supplements may be needed only for foundational support like omega-3s. Life stage and unique needs are also considered. Kittens, seniors, stressed cats or those recovering from illness often benefit from targeted supplementation to optimize their health.”
In cases of chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or taurine deficiency, especially in cats fed home-cooked diets, targeted supplements may be necessary. These situations often require meticulously adjusted nutrient levels and additional support, such as glandulars (organ-based supplements) or adaptogens (stressmodulating herbs), tailored to the cat’s specific condition. In such cases, oversight by a veterinarian and/or nutritionist may be advisable.
Supremacy of a Healthy Lifestyle
Supplements are often viewed as a quick fix for health issues. Without addressing root causes such as poor nutrition or unresolved medical conditions, supplementation may lead to poor results. In some cases, they may even mask symptoms rather than support true healing. “One of the most important things to understand is that supplements can’t replace a high-quality diet or proper veterinary care. They’re powerful tools, but they work best as part of a holistic wellness plan,” says Sherman.
Dosages and Other Safety Concerns
A common misconception is that more supplements are better. Cats often thrive with less. “Over-supplementation can strain organs like the liver and kidneys and may even contribute to the very issues we’re trying to resolve,” Sherman explains. “Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s always safe or necessary. Cats are incredibly sensitive, and even beneficial ingredients can become harmful if used improperly.”
The selection of supplements should be purposeful and precise. Fat-soluble vitamins A and D can accumulate in the body over time and lead to toxicity. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, vitamin A toxicosis in cats, often caused by excess raw liver or supplement intake, can result in joint pain, lethargy, weight loss and skeletal deformities.
When selecting cat supplements, Sherman recommends looking for those made with high-quality, naturally derived ingredients and no synthetic additives or fillers. Choose species-appropriate formulations and brands that employ good manufacturing practices. Companies that share third-party testing results are best. Exercise caution with essential oils, particularly those incorporated into other supplements, as they can be harmful to cats if not used properly. It is best to work with a professional experienced in essential oil use for animals.

Listening to Kids Without Judgment
Nurturing Habits of a Harmonious Family
by Christina Connors
In an era when children are growing up in digital landscapes unfamiliar to many parents, establishing connections can feel like navigating a maze. But harmonious living is attainable through small, intentional moments that cultivate trust and emotional safety. Rather than solely emphasizing control or screen-time restrictions, deeper bonds can be created by tuning in with curiosity, presence and empathy. Here are some strategies that parents and caregivers can employ to bridge the gap and foster connection.
Validating Emotions
“For decades—perhaps centuries—children have received consistent messaging about emotions: control them, contain them and, whenever possible, conceal them. This approach wasn’t necessarily malicious; it reflected cultural values that prioritized stoicism and social harmony. The ‘good child’ was often the quiet child, the composed child, the one who didn’t ‘make a scene’,” says Lee Sowles, founder and CEO of Kind Mind, a program that teaches adults and children how to co-regulate, be kind and feel ready to learn. “When we support our kids’ emotions, we teach them that all feelings are valid—even the difficult ones—and then we can empower them with the skills they need to process emotions in healthy ways. This fosters trust, emotional resilience and a more harmonious home environment where everyone feels seen and safe, which is crucial because children thrive when they feel understood and connected.”
Remaining Calm and Present
To communicate effectively and foster positive exchanges with our children, it is critical to keep emotions in check. According to Janet Philbin, a clinical social worker, certified conscious parent and life coach, as well as the author of Show Up for Yourself: A Guide to Inner Awareness and Growth, if a child comes to us upset, crying, whining or demanding, the best response is to remain level-headed and attentive.
“Pausing and tuning in allows us to come into harmony because we are moving from a sympathetic state of fight/flight to a state of calm and presence,” she says. “We are regulated, and our child can come to us with their emotions, feeling safe. We do not react; instead, we become grounded and present, allowing us to meet our child where they are and tune in to what they need, which is underneath the behavior we’re seeing. This is how harmonious relationships are created, because we have regulated our nervous system, and our child can regulate theirs.”
Keeping a Shared Journal
An effective method to foster mutual trust and respect with a child is with a shared journal in which parents and kids are able to communicate with each other through the written word. “Using the journal creates space to respond from a place of our loving hearts without judgment and putting aside the need to fix,” explains Philbin. “Our children will feel heard and safe, ultimately creating harmony in the relationship.”
Philbin shares how her family makes use of a shared journal, noting, “Our kids write to us about what they are struggling with and leave the journal for us in a safe space. When we find
the journal, we take our time to respond to our child. In that response, we can let them know we hear them, that their feelings matter and that their struggle is real. We stay away from solving the problem, and instead just let them know that we are supporting them to work it through. Then we hand the child back the journal, and this process continues.”
Establishing Rituals for Connection
Building a robust connection with a child doesn’t require grand gestures. Instead, it is about creating consistent, small moments that build an emotional rhythm. Here are a few suggestions:
• Make it a habit to take screen-free walks after dinner.
• Regularly journal about a common prompt—such as recounting a memorable or unexpected event—and then read the journal entries out loud to each other.
• Find opportunities to share common interests and spend quality time together, perhaps by playing the child’s favorite board game or video game.
Living harmoniously, particularly in parenting, is not solely about achieving balance, but also about cultivating presence. When we approach our children with empathy, curiosity and intention, we do not merely hear them; we genuinely see them. In this act of seeing, connection begins.
