THE NAACP’S ROOTS IN HOLLYWOOD

Since 1915, when the NAACP launched a nationwide protest against D.W. Griffith’s brazenly racist film Birth of a Nation, the Association has remained vigilant in addressing issues of ra ce and re presentation in entertainment and media. Based on the novel Th e C lansman, the film g lorified the Ku Klux Klan an d portr ay ed B lacks as lacking in humanity. Civil rights stalwart W.E.B. DuBois assailed the film. “The freed man was represented either as an ignorant fool, a vicious rapist, a venal or unscrupulous politician, or a faithful idiot.” A precipitous resurgence in lynchings and deadly race riots are directly attributed to the release of the film. Protests by the NAACP led some cinemas to cancel screenings, but President Woodr ow W ilson distinguished the film by inviting it to be the first ever screened inside the White House.

While Birth of a Nation remains one of the most controversial movies ever made, t he vo ices and v isions of filmmakers like Oscar Micheaux, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Gina PrinceByth ewood, Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler, and many more continue to rise above with beautiful and varied depictions of authentic human experience.

Today’s digital distribution systems allow television/ streaming content to be deli ve red to international audiences across the globe, but earlier d ays of TV we re marked by very limited numbers of channels and programs - some of which drew great c oncern from the NA ACP ove r derogatory characterizations of African Americans.

At its annual convention in July 1951, the NAACP passed a resolution critical of the television series Amos ‘N’ Andy and other sh ow s that perpetuated negative stereotypes

ABOUT THE NAACP IMAGE AWARDS

The resolution maintained that such programs “depicted black people in a stereotypical a nd de ro ga to ry manner, and the practice of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, persons, or firms sponsoring or promoting this show, or other shows of this type are condemned.”

Issues of minority representation in the film and telev ision industries co n tinue, with the dearth of employment opportunities bein g chief, as greater inclusion behind the scenes is c ertain to ar re st th e longstanding problem. Despite the monumental events that had taken place in the movements for equal education, voting rights, women’s rights and employment, th e entertainment industry r emain s deficient in adequately reforming its business practices in ways that will lead to meaningful and progressive change.

HISTORY OF THE NAACP IMAGE AWARDS

From its inception in 1909, the NAACP has been at the fo re front of th e struggle to achieve a fair, just, and equitable society. In this tradition, the Beverly Hills/ Hollywood Branch of the NAACP was founded in 1962 and heralded as the first branch of the NAACP to specifically address racism experienced by African Americans in the entertainment industry

Almost immediately, the branch hosted a dinner in the Coconut Grove Ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel, in Los Angeles, on October 22, 1962. The evening was dedicated to honoring Sammy Davis Jr., who had loaned his Beverly Hills home to the branch , which made it possible to establish the Beverly Hills/Hollywood charter. Davis was also fete d for his tireless work to obtain fair employment for African-American ente rtainers in Hollywood, and f or h is financia l support.

Five years later, under the leadership of then-Br anch President Don Lanclos, a co mmittee of en te rtainment pr ofessional s conceptualized an awards show that would celebrate the achievements of Af r ican-American artists and professionals w ho we re lar gely ov erlooked by mainstr eam H ollywo od. Th e sh ow would a lso h onor others wor king to change Af rican-American images in Hollywood.

Toni Vaz made a motion to name the sh ow the I mage Awards. Maggie Hathaway supported the motion, and the NA ACP Image Aw ards wa s officially ratified. On February 4, 1967, 200 guests arrived at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to honor Sidney Poitier and nominees in two categoriesMotion Pictures and Television.

Now spanning 76 cate gories, th e NAAC P Image Awards celeb rate s excellence in t he arts, ac ro ss the spectrum of film, television, music, and literature. The franchise a lso honors individuals and groups who champion the causes of civil rights and social justice. Special honorees, including the Chairman’s Award, the President ’s Award, the Va nguard Award, the Jackie Robinson Sports Award and the NAACP Image Awards H all of F ame ex to l exce ptional individuals a nd organizations fo r distinguished public service.

Prior Hall of Fame inductees include groundbreaking filmmakerphotographer Gordon Parks (1984) and trailblazing talk show host, actress, and OWN network founder Oprah Winfrey (2005). Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder received the Chairman’s Aw ard in 2015 , renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg was hono re d with the Vanguard Award during the 31st ceremony in 2000, and este emed actress and activist Ke rry Wa shington wa s presented with the President’s Award during the 44th ceremony in 2013.

At the 36th NAACP Image Awards in 2005, beloved civil rights icon and former NAACP Chairman Julian Bond presented then-Senator Barack Obama with the Chairman’s Award.

Powerful media institutions distribute persuasive messaging and imagery throughout the world, influencing pe rceptions, shaping beliefs, and inducing consequential behavior Similarly, re adily a cce ssible socia l media platforms empower individuals to amplify polarizing opinions that stoke discord and division. The need has never been greater to spotlight works that foster greater collective empathy and heighten mutual interests and understanding.

NAACP IMAGE AWARDS BROADCAST

T he NA ACP Image Aw ards wa s initially broadcast locally in Lo s Angeles on KHJ-TV (currently known as KCAL-TV).

In an effort to make all of America awa re of the diverse talents and contributions of African Americans in the entertainment industry, Willis Edwar ds, t hen-president of th e Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP, persuaded then-president of NBC, Brandon Tartikoff, to broadcast the 19th NAACP Image Awards, which was held at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on December 14, 1986. The network initially aired the show in a late-night slot, but in subsequent ye a rs, audiences enjoyed the show during primetime, on both NBC and Fox.

From 2014 – 2018, the NA AC P partnered with TV One to air the Image Awards, marking a five-year collaboration with the Black-owned cable n etwork. This m ulti-laye re d relationship helped to expand the visibility of t he NAAC P and b ring attention to its key message of promoting polititical, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens in this country.

For the fourth straight year, this 54th NAACP Image Awards will broadcast live on BET Networks and will be simulcast on CBS, on Satu rday, February 25, 2023.

THE NAACP HOLLYWOOD BUREAU

W hen the t elevision netw orks unveiled their 1999-2000 fall season lineup of 26 new shows with zero actors of color in starring or leading roles, the NAACP initiated an ongoing campaign not only to address the lack of minority representation on TV, but also the lack of employment opportunities for all people of color behind the scenes.

As a result, in 1999, the networks signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the NAACP and its Coalition partners. The purpose of the Coalition is to advance the cause of di ve rsity in the entertainment industry and create milestones by which to measure future progress in Holly wo od Additionally, this historic agreement focused on implementing initiatives ac ro ss all areas of o per a tions Members of the Coalition include the NAACP, Asian Pacific American Media C oalition, National Latino Medi a Coalition and American Indians in Film and Television.

Soon after the signing of the MOU, then-Pr e sident Mfume became convinced it was the right time to create an official NAACP Hollywood entity to better support and pursue a standing diversity initiative Thus, the NA AC P H ollywood Bu re au wa s launched.

Established in 2002, the Bureau is charged with holding the entertainment industry accountable for advancing diversity in front of and behind the lens.

The Bu re au leads the way in th e NA AC P’ s proud tr a dition of monitoring the media as a form of social advocac y. Aside fr om managing the NAACP Image Awards, the Bureau consistently meets with movie studios, networks, guilds, labor unions and others in pursuit of more diverse programming and greater employment opportunities for people of color across the entertainment industry.

And while much progress has been made, there is still much to do. NAACP Image Aw ards r ecipient Ke rr y Wa shington co mmunica te d t his sentiment beautifully as she accepted her President’s Award honor onstage at the 45th gala in 2014, “Just as we must ensure that ‘We, the people’ includes all Americans regardless of ra ce , class, gender and se x ual orientation, we must also work to ensure that the stories we tell, the movies we make, the television we produce, the theatre we stage, the novels we publish are inclusive in all those same ways.”

Considering the diverse roots of the NA AC P’ s f ounders – a grou p of White, Je w ish an d African-American men and women who were inspired to action by the 1908 race riot in President Abraham Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois — it is fitting that the NAACP Image Awards continues its work towa r ds greater inclusion fo r all members of the creativ e communities, and better quality news and entertainment programming for the audiences they serve each and every day.

A Message from

KAREN BOYKIN-TOWNS

On behalf of the NAACP Image Awards Committee, welcome to the 54th NAACP Image Awards!

Black voices continue to redefine categories from poetry to animation, telling our stories the way we want to tell them. And through the NAACP Image Awards, we celebrate those Black creatives who portray the Black experience. Black actors, writers, producers, directors, and artists get the recognition they truly deserve as they exemplify OUR stories, OUR culture, and OUR excellence.

For more than 50 years, the NAACP Image Awards has showcased artists and individuals of color who fearlessly share their talents and contributions with the world. With countless submissions, as well as three new motion picture, television, and streaming categories, we want to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our nominees who extend the limits of possibility and create art in an array of genres.

We continue to turn to art and to artists for extensive laughs, an outlet for a really good cry and to support us through our emergence from one of the most challenging times in our history. It is through art that we reinforce the philosophy that we ALL embody Black excellence.

We'd like to extend a very special thank you to our broadcast partner BET for their continued support of the Image Awards, as well as to each of our sponsors who help make this event possible

Welcome to the

The longevity of this franchise is owed to its cultural relevance and the embrace our community has maintained with the NAACP for 114 years. We appreciate your ceaseless support and gladly assume the mandate to advocate for social justice, civil rights, and equitable outcomes.

It is this notion of equity that now centers the work of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau. We are particularly interested in determining a valuation for a potentially incalculable equation. Beyond the arithmetic, we are also pursuing a methodology for apportioning the resulting sum in a way that fairly recognizes and reciprocates the extraction of cultural contributions made by Black America to the parasitic traditions of mainstream commercialization.

They say the definition of dark is the absence of light. Similarly, the presence of Black cultural assets largely defines mainstream commerce. Across the disciplinary spectrum of film, TV, music, literature, art, dance, fashion, cuisine, and more, we set the tone and the table. But, what stakeholder interest does the Black community have in the results of our cultural exploitation? Beyond the attention and wages paid to our most deserving nominees and their equally talented peers, how is our larger community acknowledged as the most vital source of cultural influence across the globe?

Tonight, we celebrate excellence in the arts. We’ve tabulated the opinions of a community typically overlooked in determining the standards of achievement, and you have spoken. And the Image Award goes to… is a phrase for which you are responsible and vested. The NAACP is committed to acknowledging your contribution and your equity interest in these spectacular and meaningful outcomes.

THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS A Message from

What a contradictory era we live in! People pretend the pandemic is over…but it isn't really. Black people have more political power than ever…but we are still under attack from people who try to deny our humanity and take away our human rights.

While the NAACP fights for us on the political front, those of us who work in the creative community are making our own statements. Three years of being shut in has created an explosion of content, and there are more choices of black film and television than ever before.

Despite the best e orts of political forces that try to take away our right to vote and erase our history in the classroom, we still have been winning at the ballot box, and we continue to make movies, television shows, music, books, and theatre that tell true stories that engage audiences all over the world.

This is why the Image Awards is one of the most important award shows there is: because we truly celebrate the best in entertainment. This year has a bumper crop of super talented nominees as well as special honorees from the worlds of politics, social activism, sports, and entertainment. We could not be prouder of all their achievements.

Activist of the Year

Youth Activist of the Year

DR. DERRICK LEE FOWARD BRADLEY ROSS JACKSON

Derrick Lee Foward is the President of the Dayton Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). First elected on November 12, 2006, he is currently serving in his 9th two-year term. He is also in his 7th two-year term as a Vice President of the NAACP for the State of Ohio.

Additionally, Foward serves as a member of the NAACP National Life Membership Committee and Chairman of the NAACP National Credentials Committee. On April 25, 2006, a Vision was laid upon the heart of Foward which was to “Fulfill the Dream of the Civil Rights Act of 1964” by capitalizing on the 2nd “A” of the NAACP, which stands for Advancement. As a result of his vision, the Dayton Unit NAACP adopted this as its Vision Statement. Foward provided the Dayton Unit NAACP with 3 strategic goals, Inform, Educate and Empower. He also implemented a Proactive Civil Rights Agenda through monthly Educational Community-Based Workshops and Seminars to educate Citizens on the front-end of Civil Rights issues.

Dr. Foward was in love with his late wife, Mrs. Jean A. Foward for more than 30 years. They were inseparable and their love was immeasurable. They have two sons (Troy & Donte), two daughters (Jayme & Letoia), three grandchildren (Te’Nayia, Ze’Niah & Rodriquez, Jr.) and three godchildren (Derrion McCurdy, Donovan Dumas & Taylor Dumas).

Bradley Ross Jackson was born on March 16th and often refers to his birthday as “3:16”, as in St. John 3:16. Bradley is honored that God has blessed him exponentially as a motivational speaker, scholar and servant leader for the down-trodden, ostracized and the disenfranchised. Bradley became a life member of the NAACP the day he was born, possibly being one of the youngest youth members in the history of the organization.

Bradley is honored to serve as the first President of the Bloomington-Normal NAACP’s Youth Council and he is equally humbled to have been elected, in 2022, as the youngest President of the Illinois NAACP Youth and College Division. In July of 2022, at the National Convention, Bradley received the NAACP Mr. Medgar Evers’ Award and the NAACP’s Organizer of the Year Award. Bradley has attended every National Convention since the tender age of one! Also in 2022, Bradley received local ACT-SO Gold Medals in Original Essay and Poetry Written Competitions. Bradley has devoted his entire life to advocating for racial and social justice and he uses his gift of oration to inspire, motivate and change the nation. His award is dedicated to his Uncle, Mr. Demetrius Deaun Campbell.

Bradley is a member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, where he has received first place awards for three consecutive years. He has participated in a plethora of plays and speech competitions and has won over 50 trophies and medals.

Gushers helps Black creators take center stage

We are proud to support the NAACP in celebration of Black excellence. In addition to our work with the Youth & College Division, we continue to commit to our ongoing campaign, Black Voices Create.

Our campaign gives young Black creators visibility and credit along with equitable compensation. Our goal is to elevate their voices in culture-first spaces such as fashion, music, technology and art.

GUSHERS

THEREALGUSHERS

We define our success through yours

We can only be successful if our employees, customers and the communities we serve have the opportunity to achieve their own vision of success. Bank of America is helping to build a better tomorrow by using our capital, expertise and innovation to foster a diverse workforce to address societal issues like climate change, gender equality and economic mobility. Shared success means creating responsible, sustainable growth for our company and our world.
