Letters From The Past

Five days before the presidential election, Governors State University invites the south suburban community to see the Chicago Tribune and Second City’s “Chicago Live!” hosted by Rick Kogan. GSU’s Center for Performing Arts is thrilled to be the first on the road venue for the new format of “Chicago Live!” “Chicago Live!” is a live stage show recorded for WGN AM. Rick Kogan will lead audiences on a unique tour of the city, engaging with local newsmakers and uncovering fascinating stories and characters. The evening will feature nationally recognized improv company Second City, one of Chicago’s most influential people Bruce Dold

MARJORIE alice DEVRIES “For Mom and Apple Pie.” That’s the common answer American soldiers gave journalists when asked why they were going to war (WWII). A few weeks ago, I helped make the crumb topping for Lansing Christian School’s apple pie fundraiser. The school made 1,000 apple pies, which just goes to show that America still loves apple pie. In this week’s letter, William Kelty (US Army, WWI) writes home and mentions what? That’s right. Apple Pie.

Seven of us paid 25 francs for a 11 pound turkey and had the cook then roast it with giblet dressings; then we had baked beans, apple pie with real cow’s milk, bread, coffee and finished with fresh grapes. Altogether it made all the seven of us could eat. It was the best meal I’ve had since our Thanksgiving dinner at Camp Mills last year. I wish I could introduce you to some of my billet companions. One we call Georgia because he comes from the wilds somewhere in that state. He talks thru his nose, breathes thru his mouth, talks a dialect half (southern) and the other half is perfectly unknown to me. He can’t see out of one eye and the other refuses to stay open. The other day on the range he was shooting all over the mountain side and once or twice he missed that. We certainly get some queer specimens. Will close now and try to write again soon. I remain as ever, Your loving son William Marjorie Alice DeVries is a freelance writer, devoted to sharing the priceless treasure of war letters, each one a unique window into a life that once was. Sassay, France Sept. 23, 1918 Dear Mother and Dad: I received so much mail last week that I hardly know where to begin in answering it. It has been very rainy and chilly here the past few days which makes our drilling somewhat disagreeable; besides I have a billet full of Italians who do not understand English very well. Consequently, I am having some time; now tell me what you would do if you had a person bearing the name of Papadantonakis, Pankowski or Sciencinski in your household and to call the roll before breakfast— well I do the same thing, never call it. I must tell you about our Sunday supper yesterday.
