vision statement

Myriad Botanical Gardens seeks to increase the quality of life and vibrancy of downtown Oklahoma City by sustaining a world-class public garden and community-building urban green space. The Gardens offers a diverse range of engaging horticultural, cultural and recreational programs, exhibits and events for all ages to learn, grow and thrive.

Letter from the Interim CEO, Marlo Turner, CFRE

Dear Garden Friends:

Fall often symbolizes a shift in direction, and Myriad Botanical Gardens is embracing change this season. At the end of August, Maureen Heffernan, our president and CEO, retired after thirteen years of dedicated leadership. Under Maureen’s direction, the Gardens have thrived in beauty, programming, significant capital improvements, financial stability, and increased visitor numbers.

In 2017, Maureen’s responsibilities expanded to include planning and managing the new 70-acre Scissortail Park. Since its opening in 2019, the Park has become a remarkable destination, offering stunning scenery, play areas, and signature programs initiated by Maureen, such as the Farmer’s Market, Concert Series, Night Markets, Holiday events, and public art installations.

In addition to this change, we are excited to introduce the new Friends & Family Membership, which offers more opportunities for Gardens members. Many of you are interested in supporting Myriad Botanical Gardens and Scissortail Park. With the Friends & Family membership, you can access both properties and enhanced benefits. For further details, please visit our website or contact Abby Cage, Membership Manager, at acage@myriadgardens.org or 405-445-7087.

Lastly, fall is a beautiful time to appreciate the flowers and trees highlighting their beauty against the sky. It is an ideal season to visit the Gardens for a stroll, attend a private event, enjoy a concert, or experience Pumpkinville. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Gardens soon. - Marlo

Maureen Heffernan, retiring Myriad Botanical Gardens and Scissortail Park CEO, is the recipient of the 2024 James R. Tolbert Crystal Orchid Award and will be honored on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. during the annual Orchids in October ceremony and luncheon in the Park House. Orchids in October honors those who significantly impact the beauty and vibrancy of Myriad Botanical Gardens and downtown Oklahoma City.

Under Maureen’s transformative leadership, working with the board of directors since 2011, the Gardens have flourished in beauty, programming, significant capital improvements, financial stability, and increased visitation. Most recently, a fully renovated Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory has further elevated the Gardens as a top botanical destination.

In 2017, her job expanded to help plan and operate the new 70-acre Scissortail Park. Since opening in 2019, the Park has had stunning success as a destination for all to enjoy its beauty, play elements, and signature programs Maureen initiated, including its Farmer’s Market, Concert Series, Night Markets, and Holiday events.

Imagine a trip to your favorite grocery store. Colorful produce is piled high. Sweet smells drift through the air from the bakery. Throughout the store, everywhere you look, there are fruits and spices from all over the world for you to take home and enjoy. The tropical parts of our world have given us so many delicious foods. Too bad we can’t grow them here in Oklahoma; or can we?

At the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory, we can, and do, grow many tropical fruits and spices. Some of these are familiar from the grocery aisles. Some are not. Let’s take a peek inside the Crystal Bridge and talk about a few of these delicious plants.

When we enter the Crystal Bridge one of the first things we see is our Banana Grove. We have seven varieties of banana plants, two of these are purely decorative, but the rest produce edible fruits. If you look closely, you will see banana plants in all stages of growth. Every plant starts as a shoot from a mother plant. These grow to maturity, produce flowers, and a single bunch of bananas. After that bunch of bananas is harvested, the plant is cut to the ground and the process is repeated. What do we do with the bananas we grow? They are used for classes, and a few become treats for our parrot, Muffin.

The next familiar fruit we see is the mango, Mangifera indica . A big, beautiful tree with glossy foliage, the mango produces a tasty treat. The new foliage comes out a pinkish-red color that gradually turns bright green and then darkens into a deep, thick green canopy that hides and protects the fruit as is develops. But beware! Those glossy green leaves have another way to protect the fruit. The mango tree produces the chemical urushiol in its sap, the same chemical in poison ivy that causes a rash. Tropical plants often have ways to protect their fruits from hungry animals. Sometimes it’s sharp thorns or prickly leaves. Sometimes it’s sap with unpleasant side effects.

The next fruit-producing tree is one of our favorites. Next to the mango is a pretty little tree with fine foliage and peeling bark. Coming from Brazil, the jaboticaba has an unusual habit when it comes to its flowers and fruit. The multicolored bark splits and peels because the flower buds are produced UNDER the bark! They burst through and cover the branches and trunk with fine white flowers. These blossoms are soon followed by deep purple, grape-like fruits all along the surfaces of the tree. The fruit is sweet and tart and is like a slip skin grape in texture. The jaboticaba fruit is a fragile fruit and doesn’t ship well so this one you won’t find in the produce aisle.

As we continue further into the Bridge, we come to the spice area. Our holidays just wouldn’t be the same without the flavors from these special plants. In the ground along the path is an inconspicuous plant that flavors all types of dishes from Asian cuisines to holiday treats. Ginger is a warm spice that comes from the rhizome of the culinary ginger plant, Zingiber officinale The rhizome can be peeled, chopped, candied, dried and powdered. It imparts a warm, peppery, almost fruity flavor to many dishes, from stir fries to candycovered gingerbread houses. Our food world would be terribly dull without this spice.

For our next two spices we need to look up from the ground to the trees. Allspice is a tree that originates in Central America. This spice is made from the dried berries of the Pimenta dioica tree. It gets its name from the fragrance and flavor of the ground berries that is said to be like the combined flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. A three-in-one combination much beloved in holiday baking and the jerk spice mixes. Not only are the berries used, but the foliage is used to wrap foods for cooking and the wood is used to smoke meats to impart the spicy flavor. While you may see flowers on our Allspice tree, you will never see berries. Allspice needs both male and female trees to produce fruit and we only have one in the Crystal Bridge.

Next to the Allspice is the cinnamon tree, Cinnamomon verum . Cinnamon spice is harvested from a very different part of the tree than the previous two spices. The sweet-smelling spice that gives cinnamon rolls their name and flavor is actually the dried and powdered inner bark of this tree. The spice you find in the grocery store is oftentimes the inner bark of one of four cassia tree species instead of true cinnamon.

The cassia is closely related to Cinnamomum verum with similar scent and flavor profiles, but for the Crystal Bridge we wanted true cinnamon.

These are just a few of the fruits and spices that we grow in our own little slice of the tropics. So, remember, the next time you visit the Crystal Bridge (or the grocery store) keep your eyes open for these and many more delicious tropical treats.

Visit the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory Monday-Saturday from 9am - 5pm and Sunday from 11am5pm. (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.)

Before I met Andrea, Myriad Gardens was one of the main places that I would take my Great Dane, Ramsey, just to hang out because we loved it there. This area became a centerpiece of my relationship with Andrea, as we continued this tradition of long walks with Ramsey and had two of our first dates there. We met a group of friends for the “Internet Cat Video” festival and Andrea’s brother had his wedding reception in the small area beneath the Crystal Bridge, where I first met her family. We would often come to the movies or concerts in the park, and Andrea was a big fan of doing yoga. We loved walking to Thunder games at night to see everything beautifully lit up and still. We also went to the Devon Ice Rink yearly and participated in some of the dance classes. Because of all of this, I planned my proposal there, and we have continued to involve our kids with everything Myriad Gardens has to offer.

Q: Tell us about your family! My wife Andrea and I met almost 10 years ago here in Oklahoma City while working at OU Medical Center downtown. I was born here and have lived in Oklahoma most of my life. Andrea was born in Pennsylvania but moved here when she was about 10 years old. We have two sons, Lincoln and Oliver who are 4 and 1.5 years old.

Q: How long have you been members? We’ve been members since moving back to Oklahoma from Wisconsin a couple of years ago. We have the Family Plus membership as our kids love riding the carousel as many times as they can!

Q: What made you interested in becoming a member of the Gardens? We actually became interested when we would go down to the Children’s Garden and see members got into events and could ride the carousel for free! We came to most of the events, so it made sense to become members!

for making our 2024 tulip season brighter and fuller to date with 50,000 tulip bulbs.

Q: What is your favorite event or activity hosted by the Gardens that you and your family enjoy? Now that we have kids, we love going to Pumpkinville! It’s our favorite event of the year because the weather is usually so nice and there is so much to see and do. The different themes every year are so fun and it’s amazing to see pumpkins be turned into art! We also love when the tulips bloom.

Q: What is a core memory made with your family at the Gardens? Our favorite memory at the Gardens would definitely be when I proposed. One of Andrea’s favorite parts was when after she said yes, a little family of ducks swam right by where we were standing.

Q: Where is your favorite place to visit at the Gardens? Our favorite place would be Meinder’s Garden. It’s so pretty with the plants and all the water features. It’s where we usually start our walks through the property, and we love following the different paths.

While fall is traditionally seen as harvest time and the end of the growing season, for much of ornamental horticulture it’s the best time for new beginnings. While early spring is a great time to plant, fall is even better for many things. It’s fairly well known that plants need time to establish and grow their root systems as much as possible before our hot and dry summers. While early spring is good for planting, the same reasoning makes fall a great time to plant. Roots can still grow and establish even while the rest of a plant is dormant, so you can add a couple more months of root growth by planting in late October and November in Oklahoma. That extra growth is particularly valuable in our challenging climate.

Fall planting for trees is particularly beneficial, especially for larger ball and burlap-wrapped trees that are freshly dug from tree farms in fall after they go dormant. With the kind of stress put on transplanted trees and the time and money put into planting and caring for them, you want to ensure they have the highest chance of success. That means you want to give that root system maximum time to recover and develop new roots before summer.

It’s not just trees that benefit from this extra time. Perennials and shrubs also transplant best in fall. If you need to move plants, late fall is the best time to do it. Perennials can also be dug up and divided in fall, so you can expand your garden even as the year is ending. Early spring works well too for dividing most perennials, but I’ve often found that by the time spring rolls around, I’ll have forgotten exactly what my mixed

beds looked like and all the things I had been hoping to do with my garden before the time finally came to make those changes. Transplanting just after things go dormant and before cutting back really helps because the structure of the perennials in the garden is still clear, unlike after the winter.

The only downside to planting in the fall is the availability of new plants. We are primed to think of spring as the time to plant and have a natural spring fever to get out and garden after a long winter, so spring and early summer are the times most plants are available to purchase. Having worked in retail years ago, I know most plants get sold while they are actively blooming. But for the experienced who know where to look and what they are looking at, there are also some great deals to be found at nurseries wishing to clear out stock. Even plants that look raggedy and tired at the end of summer in a nursery can be rejuvenated over the fall and spring months.

Many bulbs, like tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils are best planted in November and early December in our area. Hyacinths are mid-spring bloomers and intoxicatingly fragrant. There are many types of tulips and daffodils, and they bloom at different times in spring. Plant a variety that includes early, mid, and late spring bloomers to maximize the spring blooming season.

Spring Smiles Bulb Giveaway

The leaves are falling, but we’re already looking forward to Spring Smiles! Thanks to the continued generosity of Delta Dental, the education department at Myriad Gardens will be handing out our annual Spring Smiles bulb kits starting Saturday, November 9. This year’s kit features a beautiful mix known as the “Three Kings.” Tulips in yellow, red, and purple will burst forth in the spring, and at full blossom can reach up to 24 inches tall with pointed petals flaring out to resemble a royal crown. Each kit has a dozen bulbs, planting instructions, and a toothbrush and floss to keep your smiles as beautiful as the gardens. Bulb kits can be picked up beginning November 9 in the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory Visitor’s Lobby on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

“One of my favorite memories while volunteering for Myriad is working Pumpkinville. It always took me back to being a child and enjoying life as only a child can, it would bring the kid out of me at 76!” - Gwen Booker

“I volunteer at MBG because of the ambience of the Gardens, but even more important is how we are treated by the staff; they treat us with courtesy and respect which is appreciated.”

- Roger Quinn

My name is Kylie Davis, and I am the curatorial intern here at Myriad Botanical Gardens. I was hired this spring as part of a year-long internship opportunity partially funded by a grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. Created in 1970 by May Smith in honor of her late husband Stanley, the mission of this trust is to “support education and research in the art and science of ornamental horticulture.” Myriad Gardens was chosen for this grant because of its goal to connect people with plants and educate them about the wonders of the natural world. To help strengthen this goal, the grant will help ensure plants on the grounds are labeled and the plant records system we use at Myriad, IrisBG, is up to date.

The IrisBG database helps our horticulture team keep track of the many plant species they plant and care for at the Gardens and helps to produce plant labels. Guests can search our plant database through our Garden Explorer website at myriad.gardenexplorer.org Searching for any plant on our grounds by its common name or scientific name will pull up the plant’s location, full common and taxonomic name, GPS coordinates, photos, and other useful information. It can also be used to produce lists of all the plants featured in each section of the Gardens.

A big part of my job is going section-by-section to survey and update this system to help make these searches as accurate as possible for our guests. I am also tasked with ensuring the different plant species are labeled to help enrich our guests’ visits. The payoff of this work is helping to make our garden a true botanical garden. I also get the privilege of working more closely with our horticultural staff. They are the true masterminds that help keep our grounds beautiful for our community and guests, and their kindness and vast knowledge have been instrumental in helping me complete my goal.

Fowler Automotive believes that art, culture, and vibrant spaces are essential for thriving communities. To support this belief, they sponsor the Myriad in Motion program, which provides complimentary wellness sessions such as yoga, meditative sound baths, and Zumba in the Gardens.

The serene Gardens serve as a picturesque setting for each session, allowing participants to connect with nature while engaging in physical activities. This unique experience offers beauty and tranquility, helping individuals alleviate stress, calm their minds, and enhance their physical well-being. In unfavorable weather conditions, the classes are moved indoors, where participants enjoy the view of the lake.

“I grew up going to Myriad Gardens as a kid and now take my children there. The difference in Downtown today is amazing, and it’s important we continue to take care of our community cultural assets and find more ways to get the community involved and engage with them. Free fitness classes for Downtown residents and employees on the grounds are a great example of this and we are proud to support the effort.” – Jonathan Fowler President of Fowler Holding Company.

The Myriad in Motion program offers free weekly wellness sessions throughout the year for both residents and visitors of Oklahoma City. To sign up for a class, please visit myriadgardens.org/calendar.
