Letter from the President and CEO

Dear Garden Friends:

Walking in the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory today, I marveled at the beauty of the plants in our new Reflecting Pool.

Exquisite water lilies, as seen on our cover, were blooming near lily pads and the composition, stillness of the water and clouds reflecting on the water were just sublime.

After opening last November, the plantings in the conservatory seemed to have doubled in size or more and are thriving and growing up and out.

Vines are creeping over more surfaces and trees, especially the banana trees, and ones that frame the waterfall are noticeably larger and lusher than just a few months ago. One of my favorite conservatory plants is Calathea, it is planted at the base of the portal structure. Its elegantly shaped leaves have white markings on them that seem to have been hand painted by an expert artisan. Another is Alocasia ‘Quilted Dream’, planted behind the Banana trees near the mist stones on the west side of the path. Its foliage seems to be gently puffed with air to make the most exquisite, quilted effect. Its cool shades of dark green and aqua blues are also painterly in effect. If you take the time to really look closely, you can’t help but be enthralled by nature’s diversity and how it expresses itself with such genius panache.

If you haven’t yet visited the renovated Crystal Bridge, do make plans to do so. There is so much unfolding every day to discover.

Soon, we’ll be getting it ready for the holidays including special evening lighting for Fridays and Saturday evenings starting after Thanksgiving to just before Christmas.

But for now, pumpkins are taking center stage for our 10th annual Pumpkinville, 30,000 of them to be exact. “See the World in Pumpkins” is our theme, and you’ll enjoy playful décor that brings this theme to life. The Children’s Garden and Playground becomes a fall wonderland for all ages – many children have now grown up going to Pumpkinville every year.

Another completed renovation at the Gardens is our south plaza Visitor Lobby entrance thanks to funding from Tinker Federal Credit Union. This area now serves as a more beautifully planted and groomed area to welcome guests. White boulders for seating line the path and kids seem to love playing on them too.

Thank you for your support of the Gardens. It is sincerely appreciated and helps us keep the Gardens one of the most popular downtown destinations for all.

Happy Fall.

PS. Our annual Orchids in October is Thursday, October 19. The program to honor all of OG&E and their many contributions to the Gardens starts at 11:30am with the luncheon at 12pm. Tickets are $100 each. Visit myriadgardens.org/orchids to purchase online

Alocasia ‘Quilted Dream’ Calathea

Named 2023 Honoree

Luncheon planned for Oct. 19

OG&E is the recipient of the prestigious 2023 James R. Tolbert III Crystal Orchid Award and will be honored on Thursday, October 19 at 11:30 a.m. during the annual Orchids in October ceremony and luncheon on the Seasonal Plaza.

For years, OG&E has been an unwavering supporter of the Gardens’ holiday light displays dating back to the early years of the Gardens. In 2012, when the Gardens sought to introduce a fall family event, OG&E stepped forward and graciously funded our inaugural Pumpkinville. This event has since blossomed into our largest and most beloved gathering, where thousands of individuals and families come together to revel in the joy of autumn.

In 2014, OG&E’s generosity shone brightly once again as they made a substantial contribution towards the renovation of the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory, laying the foundation for its early design planning.

Adding to their list of accomplishments, OG&E unveiled Together Square in 2019, a downtown space open to the public. This space provided the ideal canvas for the nonprofit organization, Fields and Future, to construct a state-of-the-art basketball and futsal court, accessible to all free of charge.

Moreover, Together Square has become a haven for John Rex School, offering a green expanse just steps away from the school.

OG&E’s unwavering dedication to enhancing our community, fostering joy, and creating spaces that bring people together is truly commendable. Their invaluable contributions continue to leave an indelible mark on the heart of our city.

Individual tickets are $100 each. Corporate sponsorships are available. For more information, please email Debora Morey, dmorey@myriadgardens.org or call (405) 202-7871.

SOUTH PLAZA GETS A REFRESH

Thanks to Tinker Federal Credit Union Gift

The South Plaza entry has received improvements and is now more welcoming thanks to a generous donation from Tinker Federal Credit Union. The Tinker Federal Credit Union Plaza has been transformed to include Oklahoma proven and pollinator friendly species, a charming walking path, and comfortable boulder-shaped benches. As you approach the entrance, you’ll be greeted by six towering ‘Taylor’ Junipers on each side, providing a striking visual impact. Tropical annuals were added to seamlessly transition you from the great outdoors to the Conservatory Visitor Lobby. The plantings feature scented flowers including Viburnums, Lilac, Sumac, and Sweetspire.

It is also home to the Conservatory’s best ambassador Muffin, our much-loved parrot who has resided in the Conservatory since the mid-90s.

The Bromeliad Terrace was designed by Murase Associates and Gecko Group, the interpretation firm, who also worked on the Conservatory renovation project.

Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) Photos by Sean Ball, Creative Director

When most people think of hydrangeas, they picture the large pink and/or blue pompom-like blooms of bigleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla ). Unfortunately, that is not the toughest plant and is not worth growing in most of Oklahoma. That’s ok though, because the genus Hydrangea contains over 70 species with at least six other hydrangeas in cultivation, half of which grow quite well in our challenging climate. While it’s hard to compete with the kind of knock-out display that’s graced many a magazine cover, these three other hydrangeas have their own combination of positive attributes that make them garden staples.

At the top of the list is oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia). Even if it might not be the most ornamental of the three, it earns the top spot by being one of the toughest and most versatile of all the flowering shrubs we grow and a native of the SE United States. It can grow in dry shade to full sun, though it certainly looks a bit better with some shade, and nothing seems to faze it. It’s actually my top recommendation for dry shade gardens. The cone shaped flowers are abundant and long-lasting, fading from white to pinkish-red. Although fall color in Oklahoma is generally poor, oakleaf hydrangea’s reliable fall color really makes it stand out from the rest with its large, lobed leaves transitioning to purple, red and yellow.

Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) have possibly the most ornamental flowers of hydrangeas we can grow well. They are not quite as vigorous as oakleaf or native to North America, but still tough and easy to grow in part shade. The number of cultivars of panicle hydrangeas has grown rapidly in recent years, so there are a variety of choices in size, flower form, and color. Two great options are ‘Quick Fire’ and ‘Little Quick Fire’, earlier blooming cultivars with white flowers that transform to dark, reddish-pink through the summer. ‘Quick Fire’ grows six to eight feet with equal spread while ‘Little Quick Fire’ is three to five feet. After establishing for a year or two with regular watering, these hydrangeas can survive dry conditions, but extended drought can impact flowering.

The third hydrangea is a native of Oklahoma, smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens). Of the three it’s the most similar to the classic big leaf hydrangea look having similar leaf shape, habit, and ball-shaped or lacecap flowers instead of the conical shaped ones of the previous two. The only potential downside is the lack of color options. Smooth hydrangreas are a crisp white color, with some newer cultivars also fading to pink or pinkish red like oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas. Although native to eastern OK, it seems to be the least drought tolerant of the three on my list, but it has an elegant, formal look and is still relatively easy to grow in part shade or shade.

OKC Community Foundation Awards $15,000

Grant for Update to Sheridan Lawn

The Gardens is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a generous grant of $15,000 from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and its Parks & Public Space Initiative. This grant will have a meaningful impact on the enhancement of our lovely Sheridan Lawn, located on the north side of the Gardens in the Meinders Terrace.

The focus of this grant is to address an area of the Sheridan Lawn that is currently being shaded out by mature trees, preventing the much-needed sunlight that our Bermuda grass requires. To overcome this challenge, we will create a vibrant mixed border highlighting a diverse range of native flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials, and bulbs. This transformation will not only ensure the lawn’s resilience but also enhance its natural beauty. The result will be an even more captivating venue for a variety of events, including popup cafes, weddings, and more.

Maureen Heffernan, CEO/President of Park Management, expressed her gratitude for the grant, stating,

This project will begin this winter and will be completed by end of April 2024.

“We are grateful to OCCF for their continued funding which has made a difference in enabling us to continually improve the beauty of our gardens and grounds. They understand what a difference public green spaces make for the community and their support truly makes a difference.”

Rine Family’s Membership Inspires to Keep Them Active

Andy and his wife Stacy have been involved with the Gardens for 10 years. Together with their two children, Adam (age 9) and Alice (age 6), the Rine family are frequent enthusiasts of the Gardens. They can be seen at Pumpkinville, participating in Full Moon Bike Rides, getting a whiff of the corpse flower bloom and more. Andy has been named community board president for 2024-25. We look forward to his leadership! We got a chance to ask him a few questions about what has drawn the Rines to the Gardens.

What first attracted you to the Myriad Gardens and made you and your wife, Stacy, decide to become involved?

After the major renovations in 2011 we were drawn to the Gardens for the first time. As young professionals without kids, we loved hanging around downtown, seeing movies and concerts on the lawn and meeting our friends. Now that our family has grown, our interactions with the Gardens have changed. These days we spend a lot more time in the Children’s Garden area and dog park.

Are there any specific events or activities hosted by the gardens that you and your family particularly enjoy or look forward to?

The obvious answer for us is Pumpkinville. Every year we’re amazed at how the staff seem to grow the event and add more features. We never miss it. We also love the full moon bike rides. Our children get so excited to see the critical mass of bike riders take over the streets and ride in the dark.

How has being a member of the botanical gardens enhanced your appreciation for nature and the environment?

I think that having the Gardens as an oasis downtown is a nice reminder that you can carve out restorative, natural spaces in places you wouldn’t ever think to. The Myriad Gardens have inspired our family to garden more in our backyard and turn our own spaces into spots where we can celebrate the natural environment and enjoy time outside.

Can you share any interesting stories or experiences you’ve had while visiting the botanical gardens?

The blooming of the corpse flower was a really fun time. It was a once in a lifetime event that captivated OKC and brought all types of unlikely people together. I’ll also never forget taking my son to see his first concert, John Fulbright on the lawn. It was a magical evening.

As a member, what benefits or perks have you found most valuable or rewarding?

The perk we use most is the free carousel rides in the park. My kids love it, and it gives us an opportunity to rest while they tire themselves out.

Which area or feature of the Gardens do you find most captivating or beautiful?

I’m still in awe of the renovated Crystal Bridge Conservatory and I’m really enjoying watching the plantings grow and fill in. Every time you visit it feels different.

Making an Impact: Recent Donations Making a Difference

Myriad Botanical Gardens relies on the generosity of donors, individuals, corporations, and foundations to help maintain our beautiful gardens outside and inside of the Conservatory and produce more than 400 free or lowcost events. Here are a few highlights of recent donations that make a difference.

• Eluned and Edward Russell Charitable Foundation is helping purchase tables and chairs for visitor seating on the 2nd Floor Terrace in the amount of $9,500 and underwrite free rides on Mo’s Carousel on select days during the holidays in the amount of $6,000.

• HoganTaylor, CPAs and advisors, are providing $1,000 for free field trips to the Gardens for low-income schools or youth-serving organizations

• Oklahoma City Community Foundation through the Parks and Public Spaces Initiative/Marget Annis Boys Fund is giving $15,000 to help renovate the Sheridan Lawn to add in for flower beds.

• Several donors are helping underwrite the production of Pumpkinville. They include OG&E, Delta Dental, Devon Energy, Tinker Federal Credit Union, and Bank of Oklahoma.
